Jazz Explosion!
WORKSHOP GUIDE
In the following pages you will find printed materials to help you
prepare for the Devon Jazz Explosion workshop. These should be used
along with the audio examples, which are all downloadable from
http://www.exetermusic.talktalk.net/DYJO/DJElearningresources.html
For each instrument, there is a pair of pages: one page gives the
tune (Blues in the Closet) and chord symbols, and the other page
gives five riffs of varying degrees of difficulty. There should be
something here for anyone to learn, even if its just the simplest
riff.
Dont worry if it doesnt make complete sense at this stage it
should all come together at the workshop itself. But if you can get
reasonably comfortable with your notes and your rhythms before the
workshop, we will be able to get a flying start on the day!

PLAYERS GUIDE
There are three ways to participate in the Devon Jazz Explosion as
a musician:
1. Learn the tune. Use the recording and printed music to help
you learn this. Just learn the first twelve bars of tune if
you want. If you can learn it by heart, even better its
quite a simple tune to learn as it keeps on repeating the one
idea, with slight changes.
2. Learn one or more of the riffs. Use the recording and printed
music to help you. Pick a riff (or riffs) that you like and
you can play on your instrument. Again, learn the riff by
heart if you can, but dont worry if you need the music to
remind you.
3. Have a go at soloing over the backing track. You can either
use the blues scale (the notes are written by the SOLOS
section), or, if you know your chords, use them as well for
soloing ideas. Using the blues scale is always a good place
to start, as all the notes will sound good over all the
chords. The main thing is to have a go, and keep listening to
the backing track so that you keep in time with the beat.
