Plugged in, not charging Windows 7 solution

I recently had the popular problem of Windows 7 battery manager malfunctioning and not charging my
battery when plugged in. The battery was fine, the power supply was fine, and the motherboard was fine (I
have enough laptops with the same specs in the Headspring office, and I was able to swap out parts to isolate
the problem).
I also searched for this problem online, and many folks are having this problem with all makes of laptop
computers. I found the steps that solved my problem here on the TechNet forums.
There are multiple solutions proposed, and here are the steps that fixed it for me:

1. Disconnect AC
2. Shutdown
3. Remove battery
4. Connect AC
5. Startup
6. Under the Batteries category, right-click all of the Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method
Battery listings, and select Uninstall (its ok if you only have 1).
7. Shutdown
8. Disconnect AC
9. Insert battery
10. Connect AC
11. Startup

Please comment if this fixes your problem so that others can solve their problem sooner. I was surprised at
how many people were having this problem with Windows 7.

Thank you! I stumbled across this when I was looking for solutions for my "plugged in, not charging" and
this was the only one that worked. I tried uninstalling the ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery but never
in that order.
I just got windows 7 on my originally vista computer and I think this problem was a side-effect.

Man! This was killing me, came home from the movies and my laptop was beeping. It's done this before...
after I unplugged and plugged it in. Well, did that again today for some christmas lights and bam! This is the

worked nicely .. thanks..
Note: step 6 needs only more explanation on how to get the Battery Category... here are the steps:
Start--> type "device" --> Device Manager --> Battery

I had a xps 17 from dell, for about 3 days when this happened to me. I removed the battery, and added again,
restarted, etc.. which did nothing. Then I restarted on battery only, and when windows was up and logged in I
plugged it in, and it started to charge again.

Yes! It worked on a Windows 7 professional upgrade installation on top of Windows Vista Home Premium.
Phew! (I had convinced my wife to let me upgrade her computer to Windows 7). HP G70 17" laptop.

I have two Samsung laptops that I purchased in March of 2010, both with Win 7. My battery indicator would
always be between 77 and 80%, and said plugged in not charging like is described above. I thought it was a
problem, and tried all the tricks that I read here and other sites. This morning I decided I would call Samsung,
so I went into Start, Programs then Samsung. The first item in the list is Battery Life Extender, so I thought
what the heck I'll check it out. Turns out that there are two modes, one that charges the battery to 100% and
another that is to extend the battery life by only charging to 80% (useful if the laptop is used mostly plugged
in like mine). It was set on the 80% setting, so I changed it to 100%, now my batter is completely full.
Problem solved, other manufacturers probably have the same thing.

This did not work for me. Dell Inspiron 1750 Windows 7. Not happy. I bought a replacement battery. I Did
not have any trouble charging the original battery until it went bad. New batt charged to 67% would not go
higher.. After unpluggin decided to let it discharge. when plugging it back in to recharge I got the message.
Plugged in Not charging.

No luck on an HP Pavilion dv9000 running 32 bit Win 7 Pro. Check Disk didn't work either. Maybe
Microsoft should patch this crap?

78-79% and stop. I changed the power settings temporarily when I had to use the laptop for extended periods
without AC power.

This solution worked on my Dell Inspiron 1501. Incidentally, after POSTing and before Windows would start
I was getting an error about the AC adapter. While trying your solution I also deleted the Microsoft AC
Adapter driver under Batteries, and both problems appear to have been solved.

Hasn't worked for me. I uninstalled the ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery then switched off, plugged
battery in then switched on, but the ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery had reappeared.

I followed the reply below from Zequez on this for a Pavilion dv7 and it worked started charging
immediately after. It doesn't hurt to try this first and if it doesn't work, try the more complicated solution.

Worked for my Dad's Compaq Presario CQ56. There is a part missing in step 6. Add "Under the batteries
category of the DEVICE MANAGER, right click..." Thank you sir, I appreciate it.

PLEASE, PLEASE clarify Step 6.

By "Battery category", you mean in the device manager. This drove me crazy guessing what you meant by it.
Also- I not notice that Windows 7 re-installed after I uninstalled it. How do I stop this crime against
humanity!?!?!?!

I had success with a shorter version of this.

I simply flipped out the battery while the power was on, waited until windows noticed the battery was gone,
then replaced it.

Plugged in, logged in (admin)
Remove the battery

Uninstall ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery (as above)

Reinstall battery

Scan for hardware changes

Works for now, but I've read this one comes back from time to time.

Thanks a lot for your suggestions.

Unfortunately my battery was at 0% so I could not follow your instructions but after reading the post post by
Zequez I removed my battery while plugged in to AC, uninstalled the drivers and it started back loading as
soon as I reconnected the battery.
We are no more used to easy solutions ...

I have a samsung and had this same problem. I did what everyone posted, but still didn't work. So, in the
search box, on my computer, I typed batterylife and it pulled up the batterylifeextender samsung program
...here you can choose from normal battery life - fully charges to 100% or extended life mode (80% charge)...
Hope this helps some of the samsung people.
