CHAPTER 1:

PROJECT BACKGROUND

1.1 The Project

The project is the design of a bridge that connects the City of Marikina and Silangan, San Mateo.
The key concern of the project is to design and replace the existing bridge that can minimize fatal
accidents happened involved vehicles that run off the road.
The bridge will also be elevated than the existing depth of it to avoid flood, since its on the river
side, and the road before it has a steep slope. The designer will utilize the use of National
Structural Code of the Philippines, Volume 2 to ensure the safety of the structure.
The design of the bridge includes the consideration of multiple constraints that will provide the
objective of the project with its scope and limitations. Thus, the designer will provide trade-offs that
will determine which one will be considered and appropriate in the final design. They will also
identify and compile existing practices for assessing trade-offs among the needs of the project,
including operational efficiency, safety, access, costs, environmental impacts and community
concerns. To support these discretionary decisions, the designers need to evaluate alternatives
and weighing the important trade-offs.

1.2 Project Objectives

The design of new bridge in Silangan, San Mateo aims to achieve the
following:
General
To develop a design that will provide a safe and ease access of travelers that will
replace the existing bridge that connects the City of Marikina and Silangan, San Mateo.
Specific

To elevate the bridge to avoid vehicular accidents due to steep slope of the location.
to provide multiple constraints that will come up for possible trade-offs
to assess trade-offs that will satisfy the needs of the project
to provide a detailed design of the bridge that will govern in the trade-offs
to provide an estimated cost of the project

1.3 The Client

The Local Government Unit of Silangan, San Mateo is the client for the project. It will
categorized under city bridges, which means that the local government will be responsible for
it.
1.4 Project Scope and Limitations
The project shall focus on the following stated below:
Design of possible trade-offs for bridge
Geometric Cross Section of the bridge
Cost estimate of the Final design of bridge.
Otherwise, the following were not included in the design:
Structural Design of the Superstructure Parts.
Construction of the Bridge.
Hydraulic Analysis of the river
Detailed activities for Construction Management
