Evesham Township School District

prepares for new school year
By ZANE CLARK
The Sun
Its once again that time of
year most known for book bags,
bells and binders the back to
school season.
In less than a week, summer
vacation will end for the thousands of students in the Evesham
Township School District when
the school year starts on Tuesday,
Sept. 6.
And while students have been
doing plenty to prepare for the
new school year, so have the districts teachers and staff members.
Projects have been ongoing
since school finished in June,
Superintendent John Scavelli Jr.
said as he outlined some changes
coming to the district this year.
In regard to curriculum, Scavelli said several development projects have been taking place, including revisions to areas such as
applied design and technology,
English as a second language, library media and school counseling.
Scavelli said new units of
study and resources have also
been developed this year in areas
such as language arts, social studies, math and science.

According to Scavelli, the district's teachers have also been undergoing several professional development projects to prepare for
the new year.
Teachers worked on projects
related to curriculum, communication procedures for dealing
with families, and projects related to the districts Tier III gifted
and talented program to focus on
differentiated instruction.
Scavelli said staff members
also underwent training in areas
such as applied design and technology, teacher evaluations and
the districts responsive classroom approach the teaching
theory the district uses that focuses on social and emotional
growth, in addition to academics.
Scavelli said new staff members were also trained in areas
such as mathematics, literacy and
technology.
According to Scavelli, the districts maintenance, custodial
and technology departments have
also been busy over the summer
to get schools ready for the new
year.
On the technology side, one
major project has seen technicians focusing on the installation

With the 2016-2017 school year

just around the corner for students across the Lenape Regional
High School District, the Board of
Education took one last moment
at its Aug. 24 meeting to reflect on
last years many achievements.
Director of programs and planning Matthew Webb said last
years 2015-2016 school year saw
students score an average of 1589
on their SAT exams. Webb said
the districts average score was
greater than the state average by
81 points and greater than the average of the United States by 99
points.
Webb said the 1589 score was

also noteworthy as data released

by the College Board shows students who earn a score of 1550 or
more on their SAT exams have a
65 percent likelihood of getting a
B- or better GPA during their
freshman year of college, which
has high likelihood of translating
to college graduation.
Another area of note Webb
pointed out was that 85 percent of
district students who took AP
exams last school year earned
passing scores of three, four or
five.
We had more students in more
AP classes than ever, taking more
exams than ever, earning more
three-plus scores than ever beplease see BIRNBOHM, page 9

Clarifi opens new office at YMCA

Financial counseling nonprofit to offer residents guidance
on spending plans, improving credit, reducing debt, more
Financial counseling nonprofit
Clarifi has opened a new office at
the Burlington-Riverfront YMCA,
a branch of the YMCA of
Burlington and Camden Counties.
The office will be staffed by a
certified housing and credit counselor and can help local residents
meet their financial goals.
Services will include: developing a realistic spending plan; improving credit and reducing debt;
avoiding foreclosure; preparing
for homeownership; and reviewing bankruptcy options.
Many local residents continue
to struggle financially, making
Clarifis services especially vital.
The Garden State had the secondhighest foreclosure rate in July,
with 1 in every 608 homes in the
foreclosure process. In Burlington County, 17.8 percent of mortgages are underwater, above
the national average of 11.9 percent.
Were excited to offer a community resource where people
can receive trusted financial

guidance from a certified counselor in a judgment-free space,

Stephanie Bittner, senior New
Jersey community outreach manager for Clarifi, said Many
clients come to us with a significant problem, but we can also
help you if you just want to make
sure youre on the right track financially.
Clients will be in especially
good hands. Clarifis primary
counselor at this new location,
Elizabeth
Greenwood,
has
been with the agency for more
than 40 years.
In opening an office at the Y,
local families can maintain their
financial health in the same place
they maintain their physical
health.
At the Y, we advocate for posi-

tive change in the community by

providing access to the programs
and services people need to improve not only their minds and
bodies, but their whole selves.
This partnership with Clarifi
does just that, said Tim Kerrihard, president and CEO of the
YMCA of Burlington and Camden Counties. When individuals
and families are financially
healthy and secure, our entire
community benefits.
The YMCA of Burlington and
Camden Counties offers muchneeded services to our neighbors,
and were proud to partner with
them to help expand their community resources, Bittner said.
Appointments can be scheduled at clarifi.org or by calling

in our opinion

School bells to ring soon

Throughout the year, The Sun wants to be your source for school information
ith schools preparing to
open their doors next week,
now is a good time to talk
about the upcoming academic year.
In the next few weeks, well have
comprehensive back to school coverage, including a Q&A with school officials and a list of important dates to
keep you informed of all the changes
and excitement on the horizon for the
2016-2017 school year.
At The Sun, were all about community news, which, of course, includes
covering the local school districts.
Well be at as many school board meetings as possible and do our best to stay
on top of the hard news taxes,
budgets, elections and the like.
But we want to be able to bring our
readers so much more. To do that, we
need your help. When students achieve
in the classroom, in the arts, in sports,

School news
We invite everyone to share their news
with us. From the classroom to extra-curricular activities, let us know what is happening in your school.

etc., we want to hear about it, so that

we can share that news with the entire
community. We have an On Campus
section of our paper to do just that to
recognize the hard-working students
in a way that stands out from other sections of our paper.
Making the honor roll, winning a
spelling bee, excelling in an extra-curricular activity, its all news to us.
Problem is, we dont always hear
about these accomplishments. Thats
where you come in. If your child does
something special, shoot us an email.
Include a photo, if possible.
If youre a teacher or principal, and

you have a special event coming up or

there is other news the town should
know about, tell us about it. If possible,
well have a reporter present to cover
the event or write a story and take photos. If not, well figure out a way to get
your news into the paper, one way or
another.
Too often, the news is driven by
events that anger or sadden people.
Too often, the good work of young people is ignored or, at the least, certainly
not celebrated the way it should be.
We want to change that. We want to
let everyone in town know when
theres something positive going on,
when young people go beyond the ordinary to help someone or have an outstanding accomplishment.
Call, email or write. Just let us know
whats happening in your school so we
can share it.

Samaritan plans two screenings of Being Mortal

Samaritan Healthcare & Hospice, in collaboration with Mt. Laurel Home for Funerals and Aleph Home Care, is offering
two free community screenings of the documentary Being Mortal. After each
screening, audience members may participate in a guided conversation on communicating wishes about end-of-life goals and
preferences with family and health-care
professionals.
The first screening is Sept. 8 at 6:30 p.m.
at the Mt. Laurel Home for Funerals, 212
Ark Road, Mt Laurel. Those interested can
RSVP at (856) 234-6900 or mountlaurelhomeforfunerals@comcast.net. The second
screening is Sept. 22 at 7 p.m. at the Jewish
Federation of SNJ Family Activity Center,
1301 Springdale Road, 2nd Floor, Cherry

Hill. Those interested can RSVP at (856)

552-3258 or ccorti@SamaritanNJ.org.
Being Mortal aired nationally on PBS
Frontline in February 2015 and was recently nominated by the National Academy of
Television Arts and Sciences for this year's
Emmy Award for Outstanding Informational Programming. The film is adapted
from Boston surgeon Dr. Atul Gawandes
2014 nationally best-selling book of the
same name.
Being Mortal follows Gawande as he
explores the relationships doctors have
with patients who are nearing the end of
life. The film investigates the practice of
caring for the dying and shows how doctors
are often remarkably untrained and uncomfortable talking about chronic illness

and death with their patients. The film also

depicts the moving story of Gawandes personal experiences with his father who died
of cancer.
Being Mortal underscores the importance of people planning ahead and talking
with family members about end-of-life decisions. Seventy percent of Americans say
they would prefer to die at home, but nearly 70 percent die in hospitals and institutions. Ninety percent of Americans know
they should have conversations about endof-life care, yet only 30 percent have done
so.

State approves Evans Elementary

closure effective July 1, 2017
Evans students to take part in transition activities this year
The following information
comes from the Evesham Township School District:
On Monday, Aug. 22, the state
Department of Education, Office
of School Facilities and Finance,
issued an approval for the closure
of the Florence V. Evans Elementary School.
As per the Evesham Township
School
District
Elementary
School Consolidation Plan, initial
transitions already have begun,
but the Evans School will remain
open for grades one through five
throughout the entire 2016-2017
school year.
The closure will be effective on
July 1, 2017.
Evesham Superintendent of
Schools John Scavelli Jr. released
the following comment regarding
the closure:
In 2003, the Evesham Township School District peaked with
5,436 students attending its nine
schools. Since 2003, school district

enrollment has dropped by more

than 1,000 students. The anticipated enrollment for the 2016-2017
school year will be approximately
4,400. Beginning with the 20172018 school year, Evans School
students will attend the remaining elementary schools within
the district because there is sufficient space within those buildings to accommodate these students as well as new students
from approved housing development. The Evans School building
will remain part of the Evesham
Township School District and be
repurposed for other uses such as
a rental property.
During the upcoming school
year, students will participate in
various transition activities with
their new schools in anticipation

of the following year.

The school district expects the
consolidation will enable it to
maintain an average class size at
the elementary level of fewer
than 20 students per general education class.
The consolidation also will provide for the continuation of all educational programs and services
over the next several years.
Specific details regarding the
consolidation plan can be found
on the school district website at
www.evesham.k12.nj.us.

fore, and were really proud of
that, Webb said.
Webb said 95.5 percent of students in the district graduated
last year, which was about four
points higher than Burlington
County, almost six points higher
than the state and about 13 points
higher than the national rate.
Beyond academics, Webb said
this year, Lenape District TV once
again participated in the U Got
Brains Champion Schools Competition where high schools in
the state had to develop teen driving safety programs. This past
school year was the fifth time in
the past six years the districts
Heads Up, Eyes Forward! program won a grand prize.
Webb also said last year was
another great year for the district
in terms of donations received.

The Garden Club of Marlton

The event will be held at the

When last years figure was combined with the previous eight
years, when the district began
tracking donation figures, Webb
said the district has received
more than $2.5 million.
In keeping with the theme of
community giving, Webb said last
year was the sixth year the district held a senior day of service,
with more than 1,500 seniors
doing community work at 90
sites.
Webb also said for the fourth
consecutive year, all four schools
in the district were designated as
No Place for Hate by the AntiDefamation League Program as a
result of school-wide, anti-bias
projects that were completed.

Looking ahead
In addition to reviewing the
previous school year at the meeting, Superintendent Carol Birnbohm also looked forward to how
the district has been preparing
for the new year about to start.

Birnbohm said the summer

months were not only a good time
for teachers to refresh and rejuvenate, but also a time to provide
teachers the opportunity to work
on their professional development.
Birnbohm said 32 teachers
began a studying skillful teaching graduate class, with another
20 teachers beginning graduate
work through an investigating
obstacles to instruction course.
According to Birnbohm, the
district also had 13 teachers attend advancement placement
workshops, with seven attending
Project Lead the Way certification courses. Project Lead the
Way works as a non-profit organization to help schools develop Science, Technology, Engineering
and Math curriculum.
A lot of professional development occurred over the summer,
and were excited our teachers
took that opportunity, Birnbohm
said.

It was another year of great

rides, fun games and delicious
food during the annual St. Joan
of Arc Parish carnival from Aug.
22 through Aug. 27. The weeklong carnival entertained attendees and helped raise money for
the St. Joan of Arc School.
Clockwise from above: Carnival
goers roam the grounds. Greg
Crisman gives a big thumbs up
after winning some prizes from a
game where he had to use a mallet to flip a rubber frog onto a lily
pad. Marlton resident Julia
Yukna, 3, spends some time on
one of the carnivals many rides.
The Rustics band plays some
tunes.

District updates crisis

managements plans
DISTRICT
Continued from page 4
the start of school in September,
Scavelli said.
Scavelli said the district also
revised its manual for intervention and referral services, updated the districts school crisis management plans and updated
guidelines for the districts school
resource officers.
As was reaffirmed at the
ETSDs most recent Board of Education meeting on Aug. 18, the
district is also moving forward
with plans to remove all kindergarten classes, new students and
learning disabled programs from
Evans Elementary School this
year in preparation for the
planned closure of the school in
the 2017-2018 school year.

As of the Aug. 18 board meeting, Scavelli said the district had

a total enrollment of 4,394 students, which was a drop of 87 students from the 4,481 students on
the final day of school for the
2015-2016 school year.
Scavelli said average class size
remains fewer than 20 students at
the elementary school level and at
approximately 25 students at the
middle school level.
On Aug. 22, the state Department of Education granted approval for the district to close
Evans as planned.
