Ask students if they have heard of the word diversity. Students will raise their hands
and give their background knowledge on the definition of the word diversity.

you stood out?
Have you ever heard of the word diversity? What does that word mean to you?

Objectives
Given a read aloud and discussion on diversity, the student will be able to demonstrate
understanding of diversity by explaining how they will treat others with differences with
respect.

1. Determine the meaning of general academic and domainspecific words and
phrases in a text relevant to a grade 5 topic or subject area. (5.RI.4)
Purpose (Why Important to Students)
*Purpose for students- It is important to recognize each others differences and respect
them not only in the classroom but in the world as well. If everyone in the world was
exactly the same it would be very boring.
