Goal(s): Students will develop an understanding of how compound words are formed.
Objective(s): TLW identify compound words and successfully combine different words to form
compound words.

Instructional Procedures
Focusing Event:
Introduce compound words by asking students to brainstorm and think about what a compound
word is. I will pose the question, Does anyone knows what a compound word is? Can anyone
give me an example of a compound word? After responses I will write on the board the answers
that I received. I will then ask what do you notice in these words? After answers I will ask
students to share other compound words that they know.
Teaching/ Learning Procedures:
The teacher will explain background knowledge of compound words by revisiting the words that
were formulated on the board. The teacher will then group students in groups of four , each
group will receive six index cards that are mixed up in a bag that make up compound
words(Sandbox, Ladybug, Snowman). Each group will work together to match each set of
words. Teacher will monitor that ELL students are participating and gaining knowledge and
concept of the lesson. Each group will be asked to stand and share their words that they have
formed.

Formative Check (ongoing or specific): Teacher will walk around the classroom
monitoring the students formation of each word in bag. The teacher will check for understanding
and ensure each student is helping. Teacher will listen in to make certain that students are using
academic vocabulary while participating in the group activity

Reteach (alternative used as needed) : If needed student will be able to play interactive
computer game on creating compound words.

Closure:
Student will be given their own compound worksheets to complete. With the whole class
students will be able to share sentences that they have created using compound words.

Assessment/Summative Evaluation:
Students are able to combine two words to form a compound word and create a sentence with
a compound word.
Beginner ELLs: Will have photos of the two words that make up the compound word as a
visual.

Modifications/Notes: ELL students with learning disabilities will be provided more examples and
will repeat instructions
