A tumor was found in the lungs of the patient however testing for
tumor
markers revealed a significant increase in the marker
for brain tumors. Where is the tumor really found?
Based on my research and understanding in the topic for
tumor markers detection. It has revealed that these tumor
markers tests have imperfect specificity, meaning that it has a
high possibility of rendering a false positive result. However it
does not directly mean that the test performed was truly false
positive. Another conclusion might be an occurrence of brain
metastases, but metastases involves the breaking of cancer cells
from the primary tumor and then entering the bloodstream to
travel to a new place in the body , leaving the primary place of
tumor (the brain) free from cancer cells therefore a test for brain
tumor markers would yield a low or absent result. The conclusion
would be that the tumor is truly found in the lungs, it might have
been acquired through biopsy which is a way to truly tell if the
patient has a present cancer or tumor.
