VOLTAGE DIVIDER RULE

Example.1

The above circuit consist of two resistors R1 & R2 acts as voltage divider.
The formula for voltage divider is given by
VO = VIN*R2
R1+R2
Where,
VIN Applied voltage
R1 Resistor 1
R2 Resistor 2
VO= 10*10K
10K+10K
VO= 5 Volts

Example.2

The above circuit consist of three resistors R1, R2 & R3 acts as voltage
divider.
If we want find the voltage at node. Then circuit should be reduced to
general form of circuit.
So R1, R2 are in series the effective resistance of two resistors R1, R2 is
given by the formula.
Rs=R1+R2
Rs=10k+10k
Rs=20k
Now circuit is reduced as shown in below fig.

Therefore voltage at node is

The formula for voltage divider is given by

VO = VIN*R2
R1+R2
In this circuit R1=Rs
VO = VIN*R2
Rs+R2
VO= 10*10K
20K+10K
VO= 3.3 Volts

Example.3

The above circuit consist of three resistors R1, R2 & R3 acts as voltage
divider.
If we want find the voltage at node. Then circuit should be reduced to
general form of circuit.
So R2, R3 are in series the effective resistance of two resistors R2, R3 is
given by the formula.
Rs=R2+R3
Rs=10k+10k
Rs=20k

Now circuit is reduced as shown in below fig.

Therefore voltage at

The formula for voltage divider is given by

VO = VIN*R2
R1+R2
In this circuit R2 & R3 =Rs
VO = VIN*Rs
Rs+R1
VO= 10*20K
20K+10K
VO= 6.63 Volts

Example.4

The above circuit consist of three resistors R1, R2 & R3 acts as voltage
divider.
If we want find the voltage at node. Then circuit should be reduced to
general form of circuit.
So R2, R3 are in parallel. Hence the effective resistance of two resistors R2,
R3 is given by the formula.
1
Rp

= 1___ +
R2

1__
R3

Rp = R2*R3
R2+R3
Rp = 10k*10k
10k+10k
Rp= 5k
Now circuit is reduced as shown in below fig.

Therefore voltage at
node is

The formula for voltage divider is given by

VO = VIN*R2
R1+R2
In this circuit R2 & R3 =Rp
VO = VIN*Rp
R1+Rp
VO= 10*5K
10K+5K
VO= 3.33 Volts
