TheotakucomeYakuzaspecialisactuallyAkiba'sTrip2 in Japan, and it's the first time
theserieshasreachedWesternaudiences,whomayormaynothavebeenreadyforits
bizarremachinations.Butforthosewhowerewillingandabletotakethetrip,whatawaited
themwasastrangeandcolorfulworldfullofplentytodoanddiscover.

Akibas Trip places you deep in the heart of Akihabara, one of Japans most famous
shopping districts and nerd paradise. Our hero Nanashi is broke and jobless otaku,
following up on a strange job listing he found online that ultimately ends up with him
chainedtothetableandhavingbeenturnedintoabeingknownasaSynthister.
Synthistersfeedoffofotherslifeenergy,anditturnsouttheresahugepopulationofthem
rightthereinAkihabara.NanashiisnearlykilledoffbyresidentvillainZenyaAmou,butthe
mysterious Shizuku swoops in to save him before things get that serious. Nanashi,
Shizuku,andaragtaggroupoffreedomfightersheadouttoridAkihabaraoftheSynthister
threatonceandforall.
Ofcourse,killingofftheSynthistersisntexactlyasstraightforwardasyoudthink.Theyre
alotlikevampires,exceptinsteadofstakingthemtodeathyouhavetoriptheirclothesoff.
Theres a reason behind all this, as silly as it may be: theyre weak to sunlight and will
dissolvewithinit.Thatswhyyouneedtostripthemdownandmakethemasvulnerableas
possible.
With Nanashi targeting his enemies head, chest, and legs, you can systematically de
pants(anddeshirt,etc.)youradversariesinastrategicmanner.Acquiresfamiliarbrand
ofbrawlingispresenthere,asyouchainupattackstostrikeawayatthebaddiesoneafter
another.Youcanchoosewhereyouwanttoattack,butitdoesntexactlyopenupaworld
ofvariety.Believeitornot,smackingaroundrandompassersbyinAkihabarauntiltheyre
reducedtotheyskivviescananddoesgetoldeventually.

AsyouweardownthedurabilityofwhateverthegroupsofSynthistersarewearing,youll
come across bigger and better weapons to do this with, such as boxing gloves, swords,
laptops,andotherstrangeoptionsthatyoucertainlydontnormallyseeinthesetypesof
games think Dead Rising meets Devil May Cry. Once youve battered away at the
clothingeachSynthisteriswearing,itstimetostripthemclean.Assoonasyoudothis,
theylldisappear.Ifyoudothiswhentheresalargegroupofenemiesinvolved,youcan
chaintheseattackstogetherforaStripFinisher.
If it so happens that your enemies clothes arent flashing just yet (meaning you havent
done enough damage to undress them totally just yet) you can engage in a button
mashingQTE,duringwhichyouneedtoaimforagaugetoreachzero.Ifyoucandoitby
wailingonthefacebuttons,youlltearalltheenemiesclothesoffinquicksuccession.This
triggers a new QTE if youre successful, during which you can execute several clothing
removalstimeandtimeagainformaximumpointsandefficiency.Ifyoucangetthisdown,
youllbeburningthroughAkibasTripinnotime,butofcoursethesesametypesofbattles
completedoverandoveragaindotendtobecomeslightlyrepetitiveovertime.
ButfightingoffSynthistersisonlyasmallportionofthegameitself.Therearealsomultiple
relationshiproutestopursue,withseveralfemalecharactersyoucanaimtobecomeclose
to. This opens up the possibilities for several different endings, depending on who you
decidetospendthemosttimewith.Asidefromdotingonaspecificcharacter,youllalso
spend a lot of time using your ingame smartphone. It acts as your menu, with several
apps onboard that you use for changing equipment, tracking records, searching
glossaries for help on unfamiliar terms, and checking out email programs and parodical
socialnetworkingprograms.
Freeroaming Akihabara when youre not completing missions is intriguing as well, with
plentyofpicturestocollect,itemstopurchase,andsidequeststofinishoff.Itfeelsmuch
liketheYakuzaseriesinmanyways,withtimesensitivequeststocomplete,engagingyet
sillymissionstotackleontheside,andquirkycharacterstocatchupwith.Youvealsogot
severaldifferentlocationstoshopatgoodsareneverinshortsupply.Sowhenyoure
tired of bashing baddies heads in for a while, its still entertaining to take a quick break,
whilestillmakingprogress.

AkibasTriplooksgreataswell,thoughtherearesomemuddytexturesanddipsinframe
rate at some points, especially when there are several, several enemies onscreen at
once. Otherwise, the 3D models themselves look great on the PS3, as do the anime
inspiredcutscenesandcharacterartwork.
Thelocalizationisspoton,withsnappydialogueandevenfantasticvoiceoversthatmake
thegameentertainingevenwhenthebattlesthemselvesstarttowearonyournerveslater
oninthegame.Itsaperfectcomplementtothesoundtrack,anaddictivemixoftechno,
house,andelectronicathatgetsyoumovinginandoutofbattles.
Unfortunately,thegamecanbecompletedinonlyamatterofhours,ifyourenotlookingto
collect every possible item you can or complete the side quests available to you. Youll
want to go back and try for all the endings, but if youre one to simply beat the game
youllfindthatyoucaninthreetofivehoursifyouconcentrate.Thatmaynotbeenough
lengthforsomepeople,evenfactoringintheadditionalendings,plots,fanservice,andthe
incrediblyaccuraterenditionofAkihabara.
AkibasTrip:Undead&Undressedisaninterestingcultureshockofagoodtimeifyoucan
seepastthesilliness,especiallyifquirkyJapanesegameshappentobeyourcupoftea.
