Mt. Laurel Township schools gear up for new year

To prepare for the new school year, district
has been working on curriculum,
maintenance projects, new hires and more
By ZANE CLARK
The Sun
Whether its adjustments to
curriculum, maintenance projects or new hires, the Mt. Laurel
School District has been gearing
up for when students return to
school on Sept. 7.
According to Sharon Vitella,
the districts assistant superintendent for curriculum, one area
the district has been hard at work
on this summer is revising every
area of curriculum.
Vitella said as of this September, districts across the state must
have their curriculums aligned
with the 2014 New Jersey Common Core Curriculum Content
Standards.
As such, the district has made
changes to the nine core content
areas of language arts literacy,
mathematics, science, social studies, technology, visual and performing arts and world languages, 21st century life and careers, and comprehensive health
and physical education.
According to Vitella, none of
the changes were major rewrites
of the curriculum, but rather the
addition of certain new elements.
Vitella said one such new element was the addition of pacing

guides, which teachers can use to

determine just how long he or she
should or shouldnt be spending
on a particular unit of study.
Obviously, we dont ever say,
on this day you must be here, because each teacher is dealing
with their own group of students,
but if a unit is supposed to take
five to six weeks, a teacher should
not still be on that unit three
months down the road, Vitella
said.
Vitella said another new element are benchmark assessments
that all teachers are required to
give, which teachers can then use
to help determine why one group
of students may have performed
well in a given subject area and
why another group of students
may have not.
The wonderful thing about
benchmark assessments is that if
youre all giving the same assessment, when you sit together at a
grade-level meeting, youre comparing apples to apples, Vitella
said.
According to Vitella, the district curriculum will now also
have clearer guides for how teachers in a given subject can provide
for students who fall outside of
the average, such as gifted students, students at risk of failure,

Mt. Laurel students are just a week away from the start of the 2016-2017 school year. Students across
the district will get to meet their new teachers, with Hillside Elementary students also getting a new
face with recently hired Principal Briean Madden.
special needs students or students for whom English is their
second language.
District business administrator Robert Wachter Jr. said maintenance projects have also been
progressing well over summer
break.
Wachter said the project to fix
drainage issues on the grounds of

Springville Elementary is complete, new closet doors have been

installed at Parkway Elementary
and rooms in a wing of that
school have also been repainted.
Roof work at Hartford School is
complete with solar panels being
re-installed.
Wachter also said the district
was preparing to comply with the

law signed by Gov. Christie in

July where school districts must
test their water for lead.
Although the law gives districts 365 days to test, Wachter
said the Mt. Laurel district could
be starting as soon as September.

on 2015-2016 district
accomplishments
By ZANE CLARK
The Sun
With the 2016-2017 school year
just around the corner for students across the Lenape Regional
High School District, the Board of
Education took one last moment
at its Aug. 24 meeting to reflect on
last years many achievements.
Director of programs and planning Matthew Webb said last
years 2015-2016 school year saw
students score an average of 1589
on their SAT exams. Webb said
the districts average score was
greater than the state average by
81 points and greater than the average of the United States by 99
points.
Webb said the 1589 score was

Jacqueline "Jacki" Smoyer

The Smart Move

also noteworthy as data released

by the College Board shows students who earn a score of 1550 or
more on their SAT exams have a
65 percent likelihood of getting a
B- or better GPA during their
freshman year of college, which
has high likelihood of translating
to college graduation.
Another area of note Webb
pointed out was that 85 percent of
district students who took AP
exams last school year earned
passing scores of three, four or
five.
We had more students in more
AP classes than ever, taking more
exams than ever, earning more
three-plus scores than ever beplease see BIRNBOHM, page 7

Samaritan screening Being Mortal

Samaritan Healthcare & Hospice, in collaboration with Mt.
Laurel Home for Funerals and
Aleph Home Care, is offering two
free community screenings of the
documentary Being Mortal.
After each screening, audience
members may participate in a
guided conversation on communicating wishes about end-of-life
goals and preferences with family
and health-care professionals.
The first screening is Sept. 8 at
6:30 p.m. at the Mt. Laurel Home
for Funerals, 212 Ark Road, Mt
Laurel. Those interested can
RSVP at (856) 234-6900 or mountlaurelhomeforfunerals@comcast.net. The second screening is
Sept. 22 at 7 p.m. at the Jewish
Federation of SNJ Family Activity Center, 1301 Springdale Road,

2nd Floor, Cherry Hill. Those interested can RSVP at (856) 5523258 or ccorti@SamaritanNJ.org.
Being Mortal aired nationally on PBS Frontline in February
2015 and was recently nominated
by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for this
year's Emmy Award for Outstanding Informational Programming.
The film is adapted from Boston
surgeon Dr. Atul Gawandes 2014
nationally best-selling book of
the same name. Being Mortal
follows Gawande as he explores
the relationships doctors have
with patients who are nearing the
end of life. The film investigates
the practice of caring for the
dying, and shows how doctors are
often remarkably untrained and
uncomfortable talking about

chronic illness and death with

their patients. The film also depicts the moving story of
Gawandes personal experiences
with his father who died of cancer. Being Mortal underscores
the importance of people planning ahead and talking with family members about end-of-life decisions. Seventy percent of Americans say they would prefer to die
at home, but nearly 70 percent die
in hospitals and institutions.
Ninety percent of Americans
know they should have conversations about end-of-life care, yet
only 30 percent have done so.

Throughout the year, The Sun wants to be your source for school information

now is a good time to talk
about the upcoming academic year.
In the next few weeks, well have
comprehensive back to school coverage, including a Q&A with school officials and a list of important dates to
keep you informed of all the changes
and excitement on the horizon for the
2016-2017 school year.
At The Sun, were all about community news, which, of course, includes
covering the local school districts.
Well be at as many school board meetings as possible and do our best to stay
on top of the hard news taxes,
budgets, elections and the like.
But we want to be able to bring our
readers so much more. To do that, we
need your help. When students achieve

we can share that news with the entire

Making the honor roll, winning a

Problem is, we dont always hear

Too often, the news is driven by

Too often, the good work of young people is ignored or, at the least, certainly
not celebrated the way it should be.
We want to change that. We want to

when young people go beyond the ordinary to help someone or have an outstanding accomplishment.
Call, email or write. Just let us know
whats happening in your school so we

Lenape PTO receives $1,000 Wells Fargo grant

The Lenape High School PTO was
awarded a $1,000 grant on July 27 by Wells
Fargo to support the organizations mission of Project Graduation.
Project Graduation is an event held for
seniors on the night of graduation that is
planned and organized by parent volunteers.
The event is an opportunity for students
to gather one last time to celebrate their
achievement in a safe environment while
enjoying food, music, entertainment and
door prizes.
At a time when donations from the public and private sectors are down due to the
economy, we truly appreciate the support
Wells Fargo has provided, said Linda
Schwartz, Lenape PTO president. We will
use this grant to help offset the cost of next
years event to be held on June 14.

The grant was awarded as part of Wells

Fargos Community Connections program,
which provides local branch managers the
opportunity to make a $1,000 charitable
contribution on behalf of Wells Fargo to a
nonprofit of their choice.
Wells Fargos 42 branches in the Southern New Jersey South Jersey region distributed a total of $41,000 in grants to support nonprofit groups $1,000 for a nonprofit identified by each store manager.
Our local branches see which nonprofits are out in the community making a difference every day, said James Newson,
Wells Fargos South Jersey area president.
We use this as an opportunity to celebrate
and say thank you to Lenape High PTO
for all of the value they have provided to
our community over the past year.
The Community Connections program

offers Wells Fargo store managers the opportunity to provide additional grants to
local nonprofits of their choice in New Jersey, Connecticut, Delaware, New York, and
Pennsylvania. A total of $140,000 in Community Connections grants is slated to be
distributed throughout the months of July
and August in Southern New Jersey.
Many of our Wells Fargo team members also volunteer or are impacted by [recipient] in some way, Anna Perryman,
Church Street, Mt. Laurels store manager.
Were proud to help the nonprofits who
serve our communities wherever we can.

Birnbohm discusses prep for new year

BIRNBOHM
Continued from page 3
fore, and were really proud of
that, Webb said.
Webb said 95.5 percent of students in the district graduated
last year, which was about four
points higher than Burlington
County, almost six points higher
than the state and about 13 points
higher than the national rate.
Beyond academics, Webb said
this year, Lenape District TV once
again participated in the U Got
Brains Champion Schools Competition where high schools in
the state had to develop teen driving safety programs. This past
school year was the fifth time in
the past six years the districts
Heads Up, Eyes Forward! program won a grand prize.
Webb also said last year was
another great year for the district
in terms of donations received.

When last years figure was combined with the previous eight
years, when the district began
tracking donation figures, Webb
said the district has received
more than $2.5 million.
In keeping with the theme of
community giving, Webb said last
year was the sixth year the district held a senior day of service,
with more than 1,500 seniors
doing community work at 90
sites.
Webb also said for the fourth
consecutive year, all four schools
in the district were designated as
No Place for Hate by the AntiDefamation League Program as a
result of school-wide, anti-bias
projects that were completed.

Looking ahead
In addition to reviewing the
previous school year at the meeting, Superintendent Carol Birnbohm also looked forward to how
the district has been preparing
for the new year about to start.

Birnbohm said the summer

months were not only a good time
for teachers to refresh and rejuvenate, but also a time to provide
teachers the opportunity to work
on their professional development.
Birnbohm said 32 teachers
began a studying skillful teaching graduate class, with another
20 teachers beginning graduate
work through an investigating
obstacles to instruction course.
According to Birnbohm, the
district also had 13 teachers attend advancement placement
workshops, with seven attending
Project Lead the Way certification courses. Project Lead the
Way works as a non-profit organization to help schools develop Science, Technology, Engineering
and Math curriculum.
A lot of professional development occurred over the summer,
and were excited our teachers
took that opportunity, Birnbohm
said.

as we go along with the testing,
Wachter said.
As with every summer break,
the Mt. Laurel district has also
hired numerous new staff members.
One new staff member of note
is the hiring of Briean Madden as
the new principal for Hillside Elementary School. Superintendent
George Rafferty categorized the
search for Hillsides new principal as extensive and said the
district had more than 100 applicants for the position.
The district used survey results and a committee made up of
teachers, district supervisors and
PTO members to narrow the candidates.
Rafferty said Madden has experience as an elementary school
teacher, reading specialist, school
supervisor and principal.
We want our school leaders in
Mt. Laurel to be knowledgeable
about not just good leadership,
but strong in curriculum and instruction, because our students
deserve that, our teachers deserve that, and our schools deserve that, and Dr. Briean Madden met those credentials, Rafferty said.

Laurel Police responded to the
McDonalds on Route 73 for a
