Preface
The following chapters are offered in the hope that they will
help clarify future events in the mind of the reader. They are
primarily composed of statements of the prophets and passages of scripture. This work is a result of much perspiration,
prayer and timely inspiration. It came in a line upon line and
precept upon precept fashion. My hope is that the reader will
prayerfully consider what is offered and in the spirit of wisdom, act accordingly.

Chapter 1
The Chronological Nature of Prophecy
This is a subject thats near to my heart. Chronology, and prophecy. My attempts
at writing about the last days and the Second Coming have been greatly facilitated
by the realization of this fact. At first it was just noticing how things fit so nicely
together. Then one day it dawned on me that these nicely fitting pieces of prophecy were all bits and pieces of chronology, and that prophecy, by its very nature,
is chronological.
Prophecy could be thought of as a story or history of events yet to happen, and
histories are most easily understood and remembered when the events making up
that history are rolled out in the sequence in which they originally occurred. To
understand the chronology of prophesied events, we should lay aside any preconceived ideas and allow the chronology contained in the scriptures to be our
guide.
One of our greatest prophetic assets lies in Johns Book of Revelation. What could
be more chronological? We have a book with seven seals, and we know that each
seal represents a thousand years of the earths history. When we get in the seventh
seal, we have angels, trumpets, woes, etc. - all conveniently numbered for our
benefit. The Lord isnt trying to pull the wool over our eyes; hes laying it all out
for us. And yet there are those among us who speak of overlapping seals, etc.
Saying that the events in one seal overlap events in another is like saying that the
Lord doesnt know how to count. If one has to stretch and twist what the Lord has
said in order to make our interpretation fit, then we have the wrong interpretation.
Why does the Lord use labels such as first seal, second seal, etc.? Answer, to
make it simple to the understanding of all. So take the Lords word for it when he
numbers things. He is just giving you the facts.
http://www.ayearwithnorainbow.com

A Year With No Rainbow

Page 4

There is a principle involved here. It is the concept of line upon line and precept
upon precept. If the Lord has a sequence of 10 precepts to teach us and we dont
take his word for precept # 3 or doubt something he said in percept # 4, then we
have burned the bridge to precepts 5 through 10. We need to approach the Lord
with an open heart, casting all doubt aside. When the Lord says its this way,
believe him and you will be far ahead of the crowd!
How this chronology works for our edification.
Lets say that there are two passages of prophetic scripture. Passage A contains six
elements or events and passage B has seven elements or events. Now lets say that
two of these events are the same. We now have an extended chain of events containing a total of eleven events. Would this increase our understanding? Yes, it
certainly would. And by diligence and hard work, our understanding may continue
to grow until we have a panoramic view of the future. That has been my experience.
Three things to take into consideration as we look for chronology in prophecy are:
1- No one segment of chronology tends to be complete within itself. 2- Some
times a chronology has such huge gaps in it, or jumps so far ahead that we dont
recognize it as part of the same chronology. 3- Our own biases or pre-conceived
ideas can cause us to look past passages that are purely chronological.
An example of this second point can be found in the 88th section of the Doctrine
and Covenants. Take a close look at verses 94 and 95.
94 And another angel shall sound his trump, saying: That great
church, the mother of abominations, that made all nations drink of
the wine of the wrath of her fornication, that persecuteth the saints
of God, that shed their bloodshe who sitteth upon many waters,
and upon the islands of the seabehold, she is the tares of the
earth; she is bound in bundles; her bands are made strong, no man
can loose them; therefore, she is ready to be burned. And he shall
sound his trump both long and loud, and all nations shall hear it.
95 And there shall be silence in heaven for the space of half an
hour; and immediately after shall the curtain of heaven be unfolded,
as a scroll is unfolded after it is rolled up, and the face of the Lord
shall be unveiled;

Verse 94 depicts 6th seal events

The burning of That great church...who sitteth upon many waters spoken of in
verse 94 above, is a sixth seal event. It leads to the Lords appearance at AdamOndi-Ahman, which is the Lords first appearance of the millennial era. At the
opening of the Millennium, or seventh seal, a half-hour of silence in heaven commences. John says, And when he had opened the seventh seal, there was silence
in heaven about the space of half an hour. (Rev. 8:1) This silence in both D&C
88:95 and Rev. 8:1 is in heaven and therefore is according to the Lords time or
some 21 years in our time. Because the events in verse 94 are sixth seal and happen before the opening of the seventh seal, there will be a gap of at least 21 years
between the events in these two verses.
Verse 95 depicts 7th seal events
Verse 95 and those that follow are speaking of a time when the Lord will come in
his glory. The curtain of heaven...unfolded the face of the Lord shall be unveiled the saints that are upon the earth, who are alive, shall be quickened and
be caught up to meet him they who have slept in their graves shall come forth,
for their graves shall be opened; and they also shall be caught up to meet him in
the midst of the pillar of heaven, etc.
Here is an example of the third point concerning our own biases . We find just
such an example in Doctrine and Covenants section 45. In verses 41 through 47
we read:
41 And they shall behold blood, and fire, and vapors of smoke.
42 And before the day of the Lord shall come, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon be turned into blood, and the stars fall from heaven.
43 And the remnant shall be gathered unto this place;
44 And then they shall look for me, and, behold, I will come; and they
shall see me in the clouds of heaven, clothed with power and great
glory; with all the holy angels; and he that watches not for me shall be
cut off.
45 But before the arm of the Lord shall fall, an angel shall sound his
trump, and the saints that have slept shall come forth to meet me in the
cloud.
46 Wherefore, if ye have slept in peace blessed are you; for as you now
behold me and know that I am, even so shall ye come unto me and your
souls shall live, and your redemption shall be perfected; and the saints
shall come forth from the four quarters of the earth.
47 Then shall the arm of the Lord fall upon the nations.

As the Jews are gathered unto this placethey shall look for me, and, behold, I
will come; and they shall see me in the clouds of heaven, clothed with power and
great glory; with all the holy angels; and he that watches not for me shall be cut
off. But before the arm of the Lord shall fall, an angel shall sound his trump, and
the saints that have slept shall come forth to meet me in the cloud.
For many years this passage troubled me. I knew of the resurrection when the
Lord comes in his glory. The one that we referenced in D&C 88:95 above, and so
it appeared to me that this mention of resurrection was out of sequence. However,
I have come to understand that it means what it says and says what it means! Yes,
there is a resurrection when the Lord appears to the Jews and another one when he
comes in his glory. These are only two of four resurrections that take place in the
first 21 years of the Millennium.
Interestingly, this passage also illustrates point two. (Some times a chronology has
such huge gaps in it, or jumps so far forward that we dont recognize it as part of
the same chronology.)
Verses 41 & 42 speak of sixth seal events. We know that before the Lord will
come, as it states in verse 42 above, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon be
turned into blood, and the stars fall from heaven. So, for this prophecy to be
strictly true, it must occur before the Lord appears at Adam-Ondi-Ahman, which
we know will precede his appearance to the Jews. The time differential between
the first two verses and the remaining verses could be a bit over 14 years, quite a
leap in time.
In chapter 2 we will take a prophetic segment of scripture and see how the concept
of chronology applies.

Chapter 2
The Chronological Nature of Prophecy
An Example
We could give many examples of the chronology contained in prophecy. However, Nephis prophecy of the latter days and the future of America are particularly pertinent to the theme of this book. We shall start in the 13th chapter of 1st
Nephi.
A great and abominable church among the Gentiles
In this chapter, Nephi is being shown future events, they are given in the order in
which they will unfold. He sees what will happen and then an angel explains what
he just saw. I am impressed that the Lord left no wiggle room for incorrect interpretation in Nephis understanding of these events. Consider the first six verses.
1 And it came to pass that the angel spake unto me, saying: Look!
And I looked and beheld many nations and kingdoms.
2 And the angel said unto me: What beholdest thou? And I said: I behold many nations and kingdoms.
3 And he said unto me: These are the nations and kingdoms of the
Gentiles.
4 And it came to pass that I saw among the nations of the Gentiles the
formation of a great church.
5 And the angel said unto me: Behold the formation of a church
which is most abominable above all other churches, which slayeth the
saints of God, yea, and tortureth them and bindeth them down, and
yoketh them with a yoke of iron, and bringeth them down into captivity.
6 And it came to pass that I beheld this great and abominable church;
and I saw the devil that he was the founder of it.
http://www.ayearwithnorainbow.com

A Year With No Rainbow

Page 8

In these verses Nephi sees many nations and kingdoms, and the angel tells him
that, These are the nations and kingdoms of the Gentiles. Now here is a very
important point! These nations belong to a very specific group. They are not
Gentiles in the general sense of non-Christians, non-Jewish, heathen nations
or non-what have you. They are the Gentiles as defined in the Book of Mormon and they are actually the Christian nations or Ephriamites of the nations of
Europe.
This is important to understand because the formation of a great church among
these nations takes on a whole new meaning. In particular, it narrows down to a
great degree just who or what this great and abominable church can be. More
about that later Let us read on.
7 And I also saw gold, and silver, and silks, and scarlets, and finetwined linen, and all manner of precious clothing; and I saw many harlots.
8 And the angel spake unto me, saying: Behold the gold, and the silver,
and the silks, and the scarlets, and the fine-twined linen, and the precious clothing, and the harlots, are the desires of this great and abominable church.
9 And also for the praise of the world do they destroy the saints of God,
and bring them down into captivity.
Without a doubt, the great and abominable church is the same entity that John
speaks of in Rev.17:3-6. The similarities between the two passages are quite striking.
Nephi sees Christopher Columbus
Moving on to the next three verses we read:
10 And it came to pass that I looked and beheld many waters; and they
divided the Gentiles from the seed of my brethren.
11 And it came to pass that the angel said unto me: Behold the wrath of
God is upon the seed of thy brethren.
12 And I looked and beheld a man among the Gentiles, who was separated from the seed of my brethren by the many waters; and I beheld
the Spirit of God, that it came down and wrought upon the man; and he
went forth upon the many waters, even unto the seed of my brethren,
who were in the promised land.

This man among the Gentiles whom the Spirit of Godwrought upon and
who went forth upon the many waters, even unto the seed of my brethren, who
were in the promised land was none other than Christopher Columbus. Note that
he comes from among the nations of Europe - Spain to be more precise.
European Gentiles migrate to America
Again, we move on to the next three verses.
13 And it came to pass that I beheld the Spirit of God, that it wrought
upon other Gentiles; and they went forth out of captivity, upon the
many waters.
14 And it came to pass that I beheld many multitudes of the Gentiles
upon the land of promise; and I beheld the wrath of God, that it was
upon the seed of my brethren; and they were scattered before the Gentiles and were smitten.
15 And I beheld the Spirit of the Lord, that it was upon the Gentiles,
and they did prosper and obtain the land for their inheritance; and I beheld that they were white, and exceedingly fair and beautiful, like unto
my people before they were slain.
These other Gentiles are also of the nations of Europe and so the fact that they
were white is no surprise. This also supports the conclusion that these gentiles
are not of the nations of Asia, Africa etc.
On the East Coast of America they formed colonies. The colonies were roughly
divided thus: the French in the north, the Spaniards in the south and the English in
the middle. In fulfillment of Nephis prophecy, the seed of his brethrenwere
scattered before the Gentiles and were smitten. These European Gentiles...did
prosper and obtain the land for their inheritance.
We have not made much mention in recent paragraphs about the chronology of
this prophecy. It hardly needs to be mentioned because it is so obvious. However,
it is hoped that the reader will keep this concept in mind as we continue.
America wins her independence
17 And I beheld that their mother Gentiles were gathered together upon
the waters, and upon the land also, to battle against them.
18 And I beheld that the power of God was with them, and also that the
wrath of God was upon all those that were gathered together against
them to battle.

Page 10

19 And I, Nephi, beheld that the Gentiles that had gone out of captivity
were delivered by the power of God out of the hands of all other nations.
The American war for independence brought the birth of a new nation where it
needs to be in the sequence of events. As this was according to Gods plan, they
were delivered by the power of God out of the hands of all other nations. Moving forward we read:
Gentiles bring the Bible with them
20 And it came to pass that I, Nephi, beheld that they did prosper in the
land; and I beheld a book, and it was carried forth among them.
21 And the angel said unto me: Knowest thou the meaning of the book?
22 And I said unto him: I know not.
23 And he said: Behold it proceedeth out of the mouth of a Jew. And I,
Nephi, beheld it; and he said unto me: The book that thou beholdest is a
record of the Jews, which contains the covenants of the Lord, which he
hath made unto the house of Israel; and it also containeth many of the
prophecies of the holy prophets; and it is a record like unto the engravings which are upon the plates of brass, save there are not so many;
nevertheless, they contain the covenants of the Lord, which he hath
made unto the house of Israel; wherefore, they are of great worth unto
the Gentiles.
The above mentioned book is the Bible. We know the Bible did not come through
China, India, Africa or any other nation that some might consider a Gentile or
heathen nation. Next we will read about what happened to this book.
24 And the angel of the Lord said unto me: Thou hast beheld that the
book proceeded forth from the mouth of a Jew; and when it proceeded
forth from the mouth of a Jew it contained the fulness of the gospel of
the Lord, of whom the twelve apostles bear record; and they bear record
according to the truth which is in the Lamb of God.
25 Wherefore, these things go forth from the Jews in purity unto the
Gentiles, according to the truth which is in God.
26 And after they go forth by the hand of the twelve apostles of the
Lamb, from the Jews unto the Gentiles, thou seest the formation of that
great and abominable church, which is most abominable above all other
churches; for behold, they have taken away from the gospel of the
Lamb many parts which are plain and most precious; and also many
covenants of the Lord have they taken away.

Page 11

27 And all this have they done that they might pervert the right ways of
the Lord, that they might blind the eyes and harden the hearts of the
children of men.
28 Wherefore, thou seest that after the book hath gone forth through the
hands of the great and abominable church, that there are many plain and
precious things taken away from the book, which is the book of the
Lamb of God.
29 And after these plain and precious things were taken away it goeth
forth unto all the nations of the Gentiles; and after it goeth forth unto all
the nations of the Gentiles, yea, even across the many waters which
thou hast seen with the Gentiles which have gone forth out of captivity,
thou seestbecause of the many plain and precious things which have
been taken out of the book, which were plain unto the understanding of
the children of men, according to the plainness which is in the Lamb of
Godbecause of these things which are taken away out of the gospel
of the Lamb, an exceedingly great many do stumble, yea, insomuch that
Satan hath great power over them.
The formation of that great and abominable church
In these verses we learn here that after these sacred writings go forth by the
hand of the twelve apostles of the Lamb, from the Jews unto the Gentiles, thou
seest the formation of that great and abominable church. Here we have the timing surrounding the formation of that great and abominable church. We should
all understand by now that the where of its formation is among Gentile nations
or the nations of Europe. This has led some to believe that the great and abominable church was in fact the Catholic Church. I confess my belief that the Catholic
Church was closely associated with the great and abominable church and that it
was involved in the taking away from the gospel of the Lamb many parts which
are plain and most precious but I do not believe that the great and abominable
church was an actual church or religion. (More on that later.)
Please note that thus far, Nephis prophecy has maintained its chronological integrity to perfection. Hopefully, the case for chronology in prophecy has been sufficiently convincing. Continuing to hammer this point home would be redundant
and a bit obnoxious.
The whore of all the earth...sat upon many waters
Before bringing this chapter to a close, we will consider some few verses from
chapter 14. Starting with verse 11 we read:

http://www.ayearwithnorainbow.com

A Year With No Rainbow

Page 12

11 And it came to pass that I looked and beheld the whore of all the
earth, and she sat upon many waters; and she had dominion over all the
earth, among all nations, kindreds, tongues, and people.
12 And it came to pass that I beheld the church of the Lamb of God,
and its numbers were few, because of the wickedness and abominations
of the whore who sat upon many waters; nevertheless, I beheld that the
church of the Lamb, who were the saints of God, were also upon all the
face of the earth; and their dominions upon the face of the earth were
small, because of the wickedness of the great whore whom I saw.
13 And it came to pass that I beheld that the great mother of abominations did gather together multitudes upon the face of all the earth,
among all the nations of the Gentiles, to fight against the Lamb of God.
Since the beginning of chapter 13, Nehpis prophecy has been moving forward in
time. The verses above denote our present day. It is a day when the saints of God,
were also upon all the face of the earth as is the case today, and their dominions
upon the face of the earth were small, because of the wickedness of the great
whore whom I saw. Note the global nature of the whore in our day. Nephi
tells us that the whore of all the earth (great and abominable church) sat upon
many waters; and she had dominion over all the earth, among all nations, kindreds, tongues, and people.
A New World Order
Nephi also tells us that the great mother of abominations did gather together multitudesamong all the nations of the Gentiles, to fight against the Lamb of God.
Is it only coincidence that Mormon warned of an oath based society that would
exist among the latter-day gentiles and that whoso buildeth it up seeketh to overthrow the freedom of all lands, nations, and countries? (Eth. 8:25) Such is the
great and abominable church of our day. Its sinister agenda, among other things,
is to create a one world government, and it is commonly referred to as, The New
World Order.
Additionally, Mormon warned, it bringeth to pass the destruction of all people,
that is, the destruction of all nations, for when these nations fall, the millennial
kingdom of our Lord will take their place.
Moroni affirms the words of his father, saying I, Moroni, am commanded to
write these things that evil may be done away, and that the time may come that
Satan may have no power upon the hearts of the children of men, (in the millennium) but that they may be persuaded to do good continually, that they may come
unto the fountain of all righteousness and be saved. (Eth. 8:26)

Chapter 3
Signs of the times
Three Second Coming events
When we speak of the signs of the times, we are most often thinking of the signs
that lead to the Second Coming of our Lord. In this chapter we will seek to give
these events some order and sequence. We shall begin with a statement by Ezra
Taft Benson that will serve as a beginning point. He said of the Lords Second
Coming:
His first appearance will be to the righteous Saints who have gathered
to the New Jerusalem. In this place of refuge they will be safe from the
wrath of the Lord, which will be poured out without measure on all nations. . . .
The second appearance of the Lord will be to the Jews. To these beleaguered sons of Judah, surrounded by hostile Gentile armies, who again
threaten to overrun Jerusalem, the Savior-their Messiah-will appear and
set His feet on the Mount of Olives, "and it shall cleave in twain, and
the earth shall tremble, and reel to and fro, and the heavens shall also
shake. (D&C 45:48)
The Lord Himself will then rout the Gentile armies, decimating their
forces (see Ezek.38,39). Judah will be spared, no longer to be persecuted and scattered. . . .
The third appearance of Christ will be to the rest of the world. . . .
All nations will see Him "in the clouds of heaven, clothed with power
and great glory; with all the holy angels. . (Ezra Taft Benson, New Era,
Dec. 1980, pp. 49-50)
We need to understand that the Second Coming is not a singular event but rather, a
series of events or appearances. Now lets take a look at a diagram of the three
http://www.ayearwithnorainbow.com

appearances mentioned by President Benson.

Christ at Adam-Ondi-Ahman
In reality, there may be quite a few additional appearances but for our purposes we
will mention only the four main ones. The forth appearance will actually precede
those mentioned above. It is the Lords appearance to the Ancient of Days as mentioned in Daniel chapter 7. To understand more about this appearance and its significance we go to a statement by Joseph Fielding Smith. Of this momentous event
he said;
This council in the valley of Adam-ondi-Ahman is to be of the greatest
importance to this world. At that time there will be a transfer of authority from the usurper and imposter, Lucifer, to the rightful King, Jesus
Christ. Judgment will be set and all who have held keys will make their
reports and deliver their stewardships, as they shall be required. Adam
will direct this judgment, and then he will make his report, as the one
holding the keys for this earth, to his Superior Officer, Jesus Christ. Our
Lord will then assume the reigns of government; directions will be
given to the Priesthood; and He, whose right it is to rule, will be installed officially by the voice of the Priesthood there assembled. This
grand council of Priesthood will be composed, not only of those who
are faithful who now dwell on this earth, but also of the prophets and
apostles of old, who have had directing authority. Others may also be
there, but if so they will be there by appointment, for this is to be an
official council called to attend to the most momentous matters concerning the destiny of this earth.
When this gathering is held, the world will not know of it; the members
of the Church at large will not know of it, yet it shall be preparatory to
the coming in the clouds of glory of our Savior Jesus Christ as the
Prophet Joseph Smith has said. The world cannot know of it. The Saints
cannot know of it-except those who officially shall be called into this
council-for it shall precede the coming of Jesus Christ as a thief in the
night, unbeknown to all the world. (Joseph Fielding Smith, The Way to
Perfection , 1949], 291)
So now we have a fourth appearance, though sequentially it is the first of the four
as diagramed.

In his glory

There were two statements in the above quote from Joseph Fielding Smith that I
hope jumped out at you, they were:
1- Jesus Christ. Our Lord will then assume the reigns of government.
2- He, whose right it is to rule, will be installed officially by the voice of the
Priesthood there assembled.
At this time when Our Lord will assume the reigns of government, his millennial reign will begin. In other words, it is the opening of the seventh seal. The four
appearances and the events associated with them bring about an orderly transition.
All four appearances are millennial and collectively make up the dawning of the
Lords thousand-year reign.
The Lords four appearances. A timeline of the Second Coming
By understanding the sequence of these four appearances we can begin to put the
signs of the time in context. So lets quiz ourselves and see how knowing this
helps.
Question? How will we know when the Lord is about to appear to the Jews?
Answer: He will already have come to Adam-Ondi-Ahman and the New Jerusalem. Also, Gogs armies will have lain siege to Jerusalem for 3 1/2 years or 42
months.
Do you think that if you are around for this event that you will be caught by surprise when it happens? Not likely. And do not forget, the world has the old and
new testaments as well, so any good Christian, watching these events, will have a
pretty good idea of when the Lord will appear at the battle of Armageddon.
Question? How will we know when the Lord is about to appear in his glory?
Answer: He will have already appeared at Adam-Ondi-Ahman, the New Jerusalem, and to the Jews.
Question? When the Lord does appear in his glory, who will be caught off

guard or be surprised?
Answer: Probably nobody! Let me show you why I believe this.
Read in Ezekiel 38, verses 16 & 23 what happens when the Lord appears at the
battle of Armageddon.
16 And thou shalt come up against my people of Israel, as a cloud to
cover the land; it shall be in the latter days, and I will bring thee against
my land, that the heathen may know me, when I shall be sanctified in
thee, O Gog, before their eyes.
23 Thus will I magnify myself, and sanctify myself; and I will be
known in the eyes of many nations, and they shall know that I am the
LORD.
As you can see, the Lord will not wait until he comes in his glory for the world to
know his power or to be known by the peoples of the earth!
Second Coming to the world is at Old Jerusalem
Another example of this concept: In Revelation, starting with chapter 8, verse 1,
we have the opening of the seventh seal, and following that we have seven angels
sounding trumps. In chapter 9 verse 13 the sixth angel sounds his trump, but the
events covered by this sixth trump continue through chapter 11, verse 14. To find
out where this sixth angel is taking us, lets read verses 3-14 of chapter 11.
3 And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth.
4 These are the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth.
5 And if any man will hurt them, fire proceedeth out of their mouth,
and devoureth their enemies: and if any man will hurt them, he must in
this manner be killed.
6 These have power to shut heaven, that it rain not in the days of their
prophecy: and have power over waters to turn them to blood, and to
smite the earth with all plagues, as often as they will.
7 And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall
overcome them, and kill them.
8 And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which
spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified.

9 And they of the people and kindreds and tongues and nations shall see
their dead bodies three days and an half, and shall not suffer their dead
bodies to be put in graves.
10 And they that dwell upon the earth shall rejoice over them, and
make merry, and shall send gifts one to another; because these two
prophets tormented them that dwelt on the earth.
11 And after three days and an half the Spirit of life from God entered
into them, and they stood upon their feet; and great fear fell upon them
which saw them.
12 And they heard a great voice from heaven saying unto them, Come
up hither. And they ascended up to heaven in a cloud; and their enemies
beheld them.
13 And the same hour was there a great earthquake, and the tenth part
of the city fell, and in the earthquake were slain of men seven thousand:
and the remnant were affrighted, and gave glory to the God of heaven.
14 The second woe is past; and, behold, the third woe cometh quickly.
These verses set the stage for the battle of Armageddon. We know that, that is the
time when the Lord will come and save the Jews from Gogs army of 200 million,
but John does not describe the battle itself here. However, that the battle has occurred is implied by what happens just after the 7th angel sounds his trump. Reading verses 15 through 17:
15 And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in
heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and
ever.
16 And the four and twenty elders, which sat before God on their seats,
fell upon their faces, and worshipped God,
17 Saying, We give thee thanks, O Lord God Almighty, which art, and
wast, and art to come; because thou hast taken to thee thy great power,
and hast reigned.
There it is. When the armies of Gog fall at the battle of Armageddon, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he
shall reign for ever and ever.
When Christ appears to the Jews
If we want to know the details of the battle we have to go to Ezekiel and the 45th
section of the Doctrine and Covenants. We go next to section 45 where we will
learn more about the battle of Armageddon and the future of the heathen nations.

In verses 43 thorough 54 we read:

43 And the remnant shall be gathered unto this place;
48 And then shall the Lord set his foot upon this mount, and it shall
cleave in twain, and the earth shall tremble, and reel to and fro, and the
heavens also shall shake.
49 And the Lord shall utter his voice, and all the ends of the earth shall
hear it; and the nations of the earth shall mourn, and they that have
laughed shall see their folly.
50 And calamity shall cover the mocker, and the scorner shall be consumed; and they that have watched for iniquity shall be hewn down and
cast into the fire.
51 And then shall the Jews look upon me and say: What are these
wounds in thine hands and in thy feet?
52 Then shall they know that I am the Lord; for I will say unto them:
These wounds are the wounds with which I was wounded in the house
of my friends. I am he who was lifted up. I am Jesus that was crucified.
I am the Son of God.
53 And then shall they weep because of their iniquities; then shall they
lament because they persecuted their king.
54 And then shall the heathen nations be redeemed, and they that knew
no law shall have part in the first resurrection; and it shall be tolerable
for them.
In these verses we are told what will happen when the Lord appears to the Jews
and the arm of the Lord fall(s) upon the nations. They see him coming in the
heavens, Gogs army is destroyed, he sets his foot on the mount of olives, the Jews
look upon the Lord and ask, What are these wounds in thine hands and in thy
feet? And what does he tell them? These wounds are the wounds with which I
was wounded in the house of my friends. I am he who was lifted up. I am Jesus

that was crucified. I am the Son of God. The Jews weep because of their iniquities and lament because they persecuted their king.
The heathen nations redeemed
In verse 54 we get even greater insight into what the Lords intent will be towards
the heathen nations. Do you remember what he said in Ezekiel 38? that the
heathen may know me, when I shall be sanctified in thee, O Gog, before their
eyes.and I will be known in the eyes of many nations, and they shall know that I
am the LORD. This kind of knowing denotes testimony, for as it says in verse 54,
then shall the heathen nations be redeemed, and theyshall have part in the first
resurrection.
To complete our discussion on the redemption of the heathen nations we go to the
90th section of the Doctrine and Covenants. Starting with verse 9...
9 That through your administration they may receive the word, and
through their administration the word may go forth unto the ends of the
earth, unto the Gentiles first, and then, behold, and lo, they shall turn
unto the Jews.
We will get to the heathen nations in the next verse but as you can see, there is an
order to this. Gentiles first, then Jews and then the heathen nations. However,
after the day of the Gentiles, the rest of Israel will be ministered to, including the
ten tribes. Then the Lord will appear to the Jews and his ministry among the heathen nations will follow. In verse 10 we are told what will occur when the arm of
the Lord shall be revealed in power at the time when he appears to the Jews, we
read:
10 And then cometh the day when the arm of the Lord shall be revealed
in power in convincing the nations, the heathen nations, the house of
Joseph, of the gospel of their salvation.
11 For it shall come to pass in that day, that every man shall hear the
fulness of the gospel in his own tongue, and in his own language,
through those who are ordained unto this power, by the administration
of the Comforter, shed forth upon them for the revelation of Jesus
Christ.
Gospel not preached to the entire world until after Armageddon
The gospel being preached to all nations before the Lord comes applies only to his
coming in his glory. From the preceding scripture passages we can plainly see that
http://www.ayearwithnorainbow.com

A Year With No Rainbow

Page 20

the Jews and the heathen nations dont receive the gospel message until after the
battle of Armageddon. Understanding this helps us put this particular sign in its
proper context.
The scripture that we so often quote and where so many get the idea that the Second Coming cant happen until all nations have received the gospel message is
Matthew 24:14, And this gospel of the kingdom shall be perched in all the world
for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come. And when does the
end come? Answer: When Christ comes in his glory, the 4th appearance in the
diagram at the top of page 15. Joseph Smith understood this, for he said:
The last Revelation says, Ye shall not have time to have gone over
the earth, until these things come. It will come as did cholera, war,
fires, and earthquakes; one pestilence after another, etc., until the Ancient of Days come, then judgment will be given to the saints
So we shall not have time to have gone over the earth before Christ comes to
Adam-Ondi-Ahman.
A great work to be done
Can you see that there will be a great work to be preformed in the preaching of the
gospel between the time that the Lord appears to the Jews and when he comes in
his glory?
When will Christ come As a thief in the night?
Can you imagine that after the Lord appears on a world wide stage at the battle of
Armageddon, defeats Gogs army, throws down those nations that were still holding out, establishes himself as the ruler of this world and dispenses the gospel
message again to the balance of mankind, can you imagine anyone being surprised
when he comes in his glory or that it would be the time when the Lord would
come as a thief in the night?
Neither the members of the church nor any good Christian will be surprised when
the Lord appears to the Jews at the battle of Armageddon. It is too well documented in both the new and old testaments for that. After all, there will be a 42
month siege leading up to this battle. It is like a countdown to the Lords appearance. This could not be his coming as a thief in the night either.
The Lords appearance to the New Jerusalem wont be known to the world. The
members of the church will not be surprised when the Lord appears at the New

Page 21

Jerusalem. After all, they will be building the New Jerusalem in anticipation of his
appearing. So this appearance certainly could not qualify as his coming as a thief
in the night.
So what are we left with? Answer: Adam-Ondi-Ahman! We have already had one
of the Lords servants tell us this. Now, with new eyes, let us re-visit Joseph Fielding Smiths statement. Of the Lords appearance at Adam-Ondi-Ahman, he said:
When this gathering is held, the world will not know of it; the members
of the Church at large will not know of it, yet it shall be preparatory to
the coming in the clouds of glory of our Savior Jesus Christ as the
Prophet Joseph Smith has said. The world cannot know of it. The Saints
cannot know of it-except those who officially shall be called into this
council-for it shall precede the coming of Jesus Christ as a thief in the
night, unbeknown to all the world. (Joseph Fielding Smith, The Way to
Perfection , 1949], 291.)
The Lords appearance at Adam-Ondi-Ahman as a thief in the night and the
events leading up to it will not only catch the world at large by surprise. It will
also surprise members of the Lords church, those represented by the five foolish
virgins who took no oil with them.
Once it is generally known that the Master has appeared at Adam-Ondi-Ahman,
why should even an un-faithful member of the church be surprised at the Lords
other appearances? Thus, this appears to be the time when the un-faithful will suffer.

Chapter 4
Three witnesses
Now we ask the question: What other evidence do we have that the Lords appearance at Adam-Ondi-Ahman will be a surprise, as a thief in the night, a time
when the Lords appearance will find all things in commotion?
Three prophetic witnesses tell of how the abomination of desolation (destruction
of the wicked) leads to the Lords appearance at Adam-Ondi-Ahman
Witness one.
We start with the 29th section of the Doctrine and Covenants. Lets read verses 914.
9 For the hour is nigh and the day soon at hand when the earth is ripe;
and all the proud and they that do wickedly shall be as stubble; and I
will burn them up, saith the Lord of Hosts, that wickedness shall not be
upon the earth;
10 For the hour is nigh, and that which was spoken by mine apostles
must be fulfilled; for as they spoke so shall it come to pass;
11 For I will reveal myself from heaven with power and great glory,
with all the hosts thereof, and dwell in righteousness with men on earth
a thousand years, and the wicked shall not stand.
12 And again, verily, verily, I say unto you, and it hath gone forth in a
firm decree, by the will of the Father, that mine apostles, the Twelve
which were with me in my ministry at Jerusalem, shall stand at my
right hand at the day of my coming in a pillar of fire, being clothed with
robes of righteousness, with crowns upon their heads, in glory even as I
am, to judge the whole house of Israel, even as many as have loved me
and kept my commandments, and none else.

Page 23

13 For a trump shall sound both long and loud, even as upon Mount
Sinai, and all the earth shall quake, and they shall come forthyea,
even the dead which died in me, to receive a crown of righteousness,
and to be clothed upon, even as I am, to be with me, that we may be
one.
14 But, behold, I say unto you that before this great day shall come the
sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall be turned into blood, and the
stars shall fall from heaven, and there shall be greater signs in heaven
above and in the earth beneath;
We learn so many great things from this section if we just have our thinking caps
on. Please take note that in verse 13 there is mention of a resurrection. We shall
refer back to this later. In verse 11 the Lord speaks of a time when he will dwell
in righteousness with men on earth a thousand years, so we know that he is
speaking of the millennial day.
Then in verse 12 he says the Twelve which were with me in my ministry at Jerusalem, shall stand at my right hand ...to judge the whole house of Israel. This
judging of the house of Israel happens at a very specific time, it is when the Lord
comes to Adam-Ondi-Ahman. To confirm this, read what Elder Bruce R. McConkie had to say about it.
Daniel's account of the great latter-day council at Adam-ondi-Ahman
includes these words: "I beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the
Ancient of days did sit, whose garment was white as snow, and the hair
of his head like the pure wool: his throne was like the fiery flame, and
his wheels as burning fire. A fiery stream issued and came forth from
before him: thousand thousands ministered unto him, and ten thousand
times ten thousand stood before him: the judgment was set, and the
books were opened." (Dan. 7:9-10.) Thrones are cast down: the kingdoms of this world cease; it is the day when the Lord makes a full end
of all nations. He alone shall be exalted in that day. The Ancient of
Days, the oldest and most ancient of men, Adam our father, sits in judgment over the righteous of his race. Be it remembered that the Twelve
Apostles of the Lamb, who were with the Lord in his ministry in Jerusalem, shall judge the whole house of Israel, meaning that portion of
Israel who have kept the commandments, "and none else." (D&C
29:12.) There will be a great hierarchy of judges in that great day, of
whom Adam, under Christ, will be the chief of all. Those judges will
judge the righteous ones under their jurisdiction, but Christ himself, he
alone, will judge the wicked. All this we have heretofore set forth; now
we are seeing Adam sitting in his judicial capacity. And the scene is
http://www.ayearwithnorainbow.com

Page 24

glorious indeed. (Bruce R. McConkie, The Millennial Messiah, pg.

584.)
In verse 14 the Lord says, But, behold, I say unto you that before this great day
shall come, So the Lord is going to tell us about something that will happen before he comes to Adam-Ondi-Ahman or before the millennial day. He is talking
about something that happens in the Sixth seal or our day, the day of the Gentiles.
Read verses 14-21 to find out what is going to happen.
14 But, behold, I say unto you that before this great day shall come the
sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall be turned into blood, and the
stars shall fall from heaven, and there shall be greater signs in heaven
above and in the earth beneath;
15 And there shall be weeping and wailing among the hosts of men;
16 And there shall be a great hailstorm sent forth to destroy the crops of
the earth.
17 And it shall come to pass, because of the wickedness of the world,
that I will take vengeance upon the wicked, for they will not repent; for
the cup of mine indignation is full; for behold, my blood shall not
cleanse them if they hear me not.
18 Wherefore, I the Lord God will send forth flies upon the face of the
earth, which shall take hold of the inhabitants thereof, and shall eat
their flesh, and shall cause maggots to come in upon them;
19 And their tongues shall be stayed that they shall not utter against me;
and their flesh shall fall from off their bones, and their eyes from their
sockets;
20 And it shall come to pass that the beasts of the forest and the fowls
of the air shall devour them up.
21 And the great and abominable church, which is the whore of all the
earth, shall be cast down by devouring fire, according as it is spoken by
the mouth of Ezekiel the prophet, who spoke of these things, which
have not come to pass but surely must, as I live, for abominations shall
not reign.
These verses paint a partial picture of the destruction that will take place before
Christ appears at Adam-Ondi-Ahman. It is what is known as the abomination of
desolation or destruction of the wicked just before the Second Coming.
Witness two.
Now we go to Joseph Smith Matthew to find out a bit more. We read verses 3133.

A Year With No Rainbow

Page 25

31 And again, this Gospel of the Kingdom shall be preached in all the
world, for a witness unto all nations, and then shall the end come, or the
destruction of the wicked;
32 And again shall the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel
the prophet, be fulfilled.
33 And immediately after the tribulation of those days, the sun shall be
darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall
from heaven, and the powers of heaven shall be shaken.
In verse 32 we have the abomination of desolation repeating. Then in verse 33,
note what happens immediately after the tribulation of those days. The sun
shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall
from heaven.
What prophesied event is associated with the sun and moon not giving their light
and the stars falling from heaven? For the answer to this question we go to the 133
section of the Doctrine and Covenants where we can read about what will happen
when the Lord comes at Adam-Ondi-Ahman:
46 And it shall be said: Who is this that cometh down from God in
heaven with dyed garments; yea, from the regions which are not
known, clothed in his glorious apparel, traveling in the greatness of his
strength?
47 And he shall say: I am he who spake in righteousness, mighty to
save.
48 And the Lord shall be red in his apparel, and his garments like him
that treadeth in the wine-vat.
49 And so great shall be the glory of his presence that the sun shall hide
his face in shame, and the moon shall withhold its light, and the stars
shall be hurled from their places.
50 And his voice shall be heard: I have trodden the wine-press alone,
and have brought judgment upon all people; and none were with me;
51 And I have trampled them in my fury, and I did tread upon them in
mine anger, and their blood have I sprinkled upon my garments, and
stained all my raiment; for this was the day of vengeance which was in
my heart.
52 And now the year of my redeemed is come; and they shall mention
the loving kindness of their Lord, and all that he has bestowed upon
them according to his goodness, and according to his loving kindness,
forever and ever.
53 In all their afflictions he was afflicted. And the angel of his presence
http://www.ayearwithnorainbow.com

A Year With No Rainbow

Page 26

saved them; and in his love, and in his pity, he redeemed them, and
bore them, and carried them all the days of old;
54 Yea, and Enoch also, and they who were with him; the prophets who
were before him; and Noah also, and they who were before him; and
Moses also, and they who were before him;
55 And from Moses to Elijah, and from Elijah to John, who were with
Christ in his resurrection, and the holy apostles, with Abraham, Isaac,
and Jacob, shall be in the presence of the Lamb.
56 And the graves of the saints shall be opened; and they shall come
forth and stand on the right hand of the Lamb, when he shall stand upon
Mount Zion, and upon the holy city, the New Jerusalem; and they shall
sing the song of the Lamb, day and night forever and ever.
These verses describe what will happen when the Lord appears after the destruction of the wicked or abomination of desolation. It happens immediately after the
tribulation of those days as noted above. It is true that the world will not be witness to this event for, the sun shall hide his face in shame, and the moon shall
withhold its light causing the world to be in total dankness. We know that the
Lord will descend out of the heavens as prophesied but the darkness will obscure
the worlds view of this event. However, the darkness itself will be a sign to the
well informed. Though in the darkness we may be, yet his voice shall be heard: I
have trodden the wine-press alone, and have brought judgment upon all people;
and none were with me; And I have trampled them in my fury, and I did tread
upon them in mine anger, and their blood have I sprinkled upon my garments, and
stained all my raiment; for this was the day of vengeance which was in my heart.
All of this past tense language has reference to what has just occurred.
The Lords speaking to a world clothed in darkness is reminiscent of what he said
to the Nephites as they sat in darkness, destruction, and ruin, at the time of the crucifixion.
Also, please note that in verse 56 we learn that the graves of the saints shall be
opened; and they shall come forth and stand on the right hand of the Lamb, when
he shall stand upon Mount Zion here in America. This same resurrection was
mentioned by the Lord in D&C 29:13, which we read earlier.
Witness three.
Now let us view this sequence of abomination of desolation followed by the
Second Coming from one more perspective. This will be our third witness. In a
general conference talk in 1961, Elder Ezra Taft Benson stated:

2011, Frank M. Keele. All rights reserved.

A Year With No Rainbow

Page 27

Statement one.
The Lord has declared that before the second coming of Christ it will
be necessary to ". . . destroy the secret works of darkness, . . ." in order
to preserve the land of Zionthe Americas. (2 Nephi 10:11-16.) (Oct.
general conference, 1961)
Statement two.
The Lord revealed to the Prophet Nephi that he established the gentiles
on this land to be a free people forever, that if they were a righteous
nation and overcame the wickedness and secret abominations which
would arise in their midst, they would inherit the land forever. (1
Nephi 14:1-2.)
But on the other hand, if the gentiles on this land reject the word of
God and conspire to overthrow liberty and the Constitution, then their
doom is fixed, and they ". . . shall be cut off from among my people
who are of the covenant". (1 Nephi 14:6; 3 Nephi 21:11, 14, 21; D&C
84:114-115, 117)
The great destructive force which was to be turned loose on the earth
and which the prophets for centuries have been calling the
"abomination of desolation" is vividly described by those who saw it in
vision. Ours is the first generation to realize how literally these prophecies can be fulfilled now that God, through science, has unlocked the
secret to thermonuclear reaction.
In the light of these prophecies there should be no doubt in the mind of
any priesthood holder that the human family is headed for trouble.
There are rugged days ahead. It is time for every man who wishes to do
his duty to get himself preparedphysically, spiritually, and psychologicallyfor the task which may come at any time, as suddenly as the
whirlwind. (Oct. general conference, 1961)
Ezra Taft Bensons statement actually introduces us to two signs or conditions that
will help us know when the time is ripe for the abomination of desolation to occur.
They are 1- if the gentiles on this land reject the word of God, and 2- If they
conspire to overthrow liberty and the Constitution, then their doom is fixed.
The three witnesses of these prophesied events are all very consistent. The abomination of desolation leads to the Lords appearance immediately after the tribulation of those days. But how immediate is imminently? As we shall see in the
next chapter, it all occurs in a year with no rainbow.

A Year With No Rainbow

Page 28

Chapter 5
Sign of the Rainbow
Joseph Smith made a number of statements regarding the sign of the rainbow. At
first glance these statements may not appear to be especially significant to our
overall understanding of the Second Coming. However, for those willing to invest
time and effort, Joseph Smiths statements about the sign of the rainbow are quite
revealing.
It seems that the prophecy of the rainbow has escaped the limelight among the
other latter-days prophecies. Many members of the church are completely unaware of the existence of these statements. It is certainly safe to say that very little
has been written about this most interesting and revealing prophecy.
This prophecy of the rainbow was given to Joseph Smith in response to his inquiry
concerning the Lords Second Coming. Here we will examine two of these statements. He said:
Statement one:
I have asked the Lord concerning His coming, and while asking the
Lord, He said, 'In the days of Noah I set a bow in the heavens as a sign
and token, that in any year that the bow should be seen, the Lord would
not come, but there should be seed time and harvest during that year;
but whenever you see the bow withdrawn, it shall be a token that there
shall be famine, pestilence and great distress among the nations, and
that the coming of the Messiah is not far distant. (Joseph Smith, Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 340-341)
Statement two:
While inquiring of the Lord concerning the end of time, it was made
known to me by the Holy Spirit that there should be prosperity, seed
2011, Frank M. Keele. All rights reserved.

A Year With No Rainbow

Page 29

time, and harvest every year in which the rainbow was seen. For to that
was Noah referred as a surety on this subject. But in the year when the
bow was not to be seen would commence desolation, calamity, and distress among the nations, without seed time or harvest. (Kent P. Jackson,
Joseph Smith's Commentary on the Bible, p.112.)
Lord comes in a year with no rainbow
One of the most basic and rudimentary conclusions we can draw from statement
one above is that the Lord will come in a year with no rainbow, for we learn that
in any year that the bow should be seen, the Lord would not come. So conversely, in a year with no rainbow the Lord will come.
We learn from the second statement that there should be prosperity, seed time,
and harvest every year in which the rainbow was seen. This is confirmed in statement one where it says, that in any year that the bow should be seen, the Lord
would not come, but there should be seed time and harvest during that year.
These years in which the rainbow is seen, the years that we have experienced up to
this point, are considered relatively prosperous when compared to the year when
the Lord comes. Even though we live in a time of trials and tribulation, a time of
wars and rumors of wars etc., still, the world is not so turbulent that we are unable
to sew seed and reap a harvest. This however will all change once the sign and
token of the rainbow is withdrawn.
All events happen in the same year
Another conclusion that may be drawn is that these events all occur within the
same year. In statement two we learn that in the year when the bow was not to be
seen would commence desolation, calamity, and distress among the nations, without seed time or harvest, so these events commence in that year. Then in statement one we are told that whenever you see the bow withdrawn, it shall be a token that there shall be famine, pestilence and great distress among the nations, and
that the coming of the Messiah is not far distant.
In the context of prophecy in general, a statement like not far distant could mean
quite a long time. It could mean many years, but in the context of this particular
prophecy the Lords appearance must be fulfilled within that year, so not far distant cannot be very long at all.
Now lets introduce another of the prophets statements relative to this prophecy.
We will label this Statement three. From the Joseph Smiths commentary on the
http://www.ayearwithnorainbow.com

A Year With No Rainbow

Page 30

Bible we read:
Statement three:
So long as we see the bow in the cloud, seed time and harvest shall continue that year. When the bow shall cease, then shall come famine,
wars, and so forth, after which the sign of the Son of Man shall be seen
in heaven. (ibid)
So what kind of a year will this be? As mentioned above, we already live in tumultuous times, but apparently, the months leading up to the Lords appearance
will be especially trying for the inhabitants of planet earth. The conditions will be
such that planting and harvesting will not be an option. It will be a time of
famine, pestilence and great distress among the nations. (Statement one)
Desolation and calamity will be part of the mix. (Statement two) And wars,
and so forth will commence. (Statement three)
Sign of the Son of Man
In Statement number three we are told that When the bow shall cease, then shall
come famine, wars, and so forth, after which the sign of the Son of Man shall be
seen in heaven. So the sign of the Son of Man will occur in this same year and
apparently does not precede the Lords actual appearance by much.
This brings up the question as to why there needs to be a sign of the Son of Man
when the actual appearance of the Lord follows so closely on its heels. Could it be
that the world at large will not witness this particular appearance? Does there need
to be a sign given so that the world may know that a great event is about to occur?
Might this sign of the Son of Man be akin to the sign of the dove at the Saviors baptism? If this were the case then it begs the questionIs the appearance
associated with the sign of the rainbow the Lords appearance to the ancient of
days at Adom-Ondi-Ahman? I believe it is one and the same.
Another question arises based on the questions asked in the previous paragraph. If
the sign of the Son of Man appears just before the Lord appears at Adam-OndiAhman, an event that the world at large will not witness, being in total darkness.
Could it be that this sign, which appears as a light in the East could be the Lord
and the host of heaven which accompany him? Then, before he arrives, the lights
go out and the world at large is unable to confirm his arrival? If this be correct,
then Joseph Smiths statement, wherein he says, But the Son of Man will come as
the sign of the coming of the Son of Man takes on a completely different meaning.

Page 31

In another quotation, Joseph Smith made mention of a time of great tribulation

leading up this same event. He said:
When wars come, we shall have to flee to Zion. The cry is to make
haste. The last Revelation says, "Ye shall not have time to have gone
over the earth, until these things come." It will come as did the cholera,
war, fires, and earthquakes; one pestilence after another, etc., until the
Ancient of Days come, then judgment will be given to the Saints.
(1839-July-DHC 3:385-391)
Does this statement also have application to the year with no rainbow? Note that
cholera, war, fires, and earthquakes; one pestilence after another, etc. continue
until the Ancient of Days come, at which time we know that the Lord shall appear to a great host in the valley of Adam-Ondi-Ahman. Both the prophecy of the
rainbow and the above statement regarding the Ancient of Days conclude with
the Lord appearing!
The similarities between the prophecy of the rainbow and Joseph Smiths statement above are striking!
In the previous chapter we discussed the three witnesses of the abomination of
desolation. In each instance we showed the same sequence of destruction of the
wicked, followed by the Lords appearance. We learned that immediately after
the tribulation of those days the Lord would come and the prophecy on the rainbow shows us just how immediate it will actually be.
I would propose that the year would unfold something like this. In the beginning
of the year and preceding seed time there will be no rainbow, thus the sign or
token is given. This sign is confirmed in the first part of the year. Then something
happens to interfere with the normal season of planting. From the prophets statements on the rainbow above we know that we will see, famine, pestilence and
great distress among the nations, desolation, calamity, and distress among the
nations and famine, wars, and so forth.
But when will the Lord appear? Not until all of the conditions of the prophecy
have been met. So we will have no rainbow, no seed time, great destruction and no
harvest. That takes us through October, the normal month of harvest. So we can
expect the Lord to come after harvest time and before the end of the year.
There may not be any scriptural or prophetic statements to guide us further. However, should we be surprised if Christ, the Light of the World, comes into the
world just after the winter solstice as the days are getting longer and illumination

increases in the northern hemisphere? After all, do not all things testify of Christ?
One can see that the transition from our present condition to the Lords millennial
reign will be mercifully brief here in America. He will make short work of the
wicked and then move ahead with the establishment of the American Zion and the
building of the New Jerusalem, a work that will pave the way for his other two
appearances and a world completely under his control.

Chapter 6
Daniel and the Last Days
Daniels prophecies of latter-day events are amazingly comprehensive and accurate. In this chapter we will discover how some of these prophecies are being fulfilled in our day. In order to have a complete picture of how and when the millennial transition will occur, we must understand the meanings contained in two key
chapters of Daniels prophecy. We start with Daniel chapter 2 where he both reveals and interprets king Nebuchadnezzars dream in these words:
Daniel Chapter 2
28 But there is a God in heaven that revealeth secrets, and maketh
known to the king Nebuchadnezzar what shall be in the latter days. Thy
dream, and the visions of thy head upon thy bed, are these
31 Thou, O king, sawest, and behold a great image. This great image,
whose brightness was excellent, stood before thee; and the form thereof
was terrible.
32 This image's head was of fine gold, his breast and his arms of silver,
his belly and his thighs of brass,
33 His legs of iron, his feet part of iron and part of clay.
34 Thou sawest till that a stone was cut out without hands, which smote
the image upon his feet that were of iron and clay, and brake them to
pieces.
Next Daniel gives the king the interpretation of the dream. In doing so he associates each part of the image with various kingdoms, down to a time when a stone
cut out of the mountain without hands would strike the image and brake in
pieces the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold. It is especially noteworthy that in verse 34 above, Daniel says that the stone smote the image upon
http://www.ayearwithnorainbow.com

A Year With No Rainbow

Page 34

his feet that were of iron and clay, and brake them to pieces. The significance of
this will be discussed later. Now lets read verses 37-45 to get the interpretation of
the dream:
37 Thou, O king, art a king of kings: for the God of heaven hath given
thee a kingdom, power, and strength, and glory.
38 And wheresoever the children of men dwell, the beasts of the field
and the fowls of the heaven hath he given into thine hand, and hath
made thee ruler over them all. Thou art this head of gold.
39 And after thee shall arise another kingdom inferior to thee, and another third kingdom of brass, which shall bear rule over all the earth.
40 And the fourth kingdom shall be strong as iron: forasmuch as iron
breaketh in pieces and subdueth all things: and as iron that breaketh all
these, shall it break in pieces and bruise.
41 And whereas thou sawest the feet and toes, part of potters' clay, and
part of iron, the kingdom shall be divided; but there shall be in it of the
strength of the iron, forasmuch as thou sawest the iron mixed with miry
clay.
42 And as the toes of the feet were part of iron, and part of clay, so the
kingdom shall be partly strong, and partly broken.
43 And whereas thou sawest iron mixed with miry clay, they shall mingle themselves with the seed of men: but they shall not cleave one to
another, even as iron is not mixed with clay.
44 And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left
to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever.
45 Forasmuch as thou sawest that the stone was cut out of the mountain
without hands, and that it brake in pieces the iron, the brass, the clay,
the silver, and the gold; the great God hath made known to the king
what shall come to pass hereafter: and the dream is certain, and the interpretation thereof sure.
Relating to the above mentioned kingdoms and the millennial kingdom that would
replace them, Elder Orson Pratt said:
A kingdom or government should be set up on the earth that should
never be destroyed. It should not be taken from one people and given to
another, as Babylon was taken from the Babylonians and given to the
Medes and Persians; and as the Medes and Persians had their kingdom
transferred and given to the Greeks and Macedonians; and as the latter
had their kingdom transferred from them and given to the Romans; and

as the Romans, in turn, lost their universal dominion and great power,
and were broken up into little petty kingdoms, such as now exist. But
this latter kingdom was not to be thus transferred; it was to be permanent, it was to increase in greatness and strength, until it, or the little
stone which represented it, became as a great mountain, filling the
whole earth. . (Orson Pratt, Journal of Discourses, 26 vols., 18541886], 18: 338.)
Looking at these kingdoms in their historical context, we can chart the various
parts of the image as follows.

The Babylonian empire

The Mead / Persian empire
The Greek / Macedonian empire
The Roman empire
The nations of Europe

Speaking of that time when these nations of Europe would devolve from the Roman empire, Daniel said, thou sawest iron mixed with miry clay, they shall mingle themselves with the seed of men: but they shall not cleave one to another, even
as iron is not mixed with clay. And in the days of these kings shall the God of
heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall
not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever.
Was it not so? Was it not in the days of these kings of Europe that the restored
latter-day kingdom was established? We declare a resounding yes, and it was established among those Gentiles or Ephraimites who sprang from these very nations of Europe.
Daniel Chapter 7
Now we move to Daniel chapter 7 where the prophet tells of another vision. In this
vision Daniel sees four beasts. Of these beasts he says:
4 The first was like a lion, and had eagle's wings: I beheld till the wings
thereof were plucked, and it was lifted up from the earth, and made
stand upon the feet as a man, and a man's heart was given to it.
5 And behold another beast, a second, like to a bear, and it raised up
itself on one side, and it had three ribs in the mouth of it between the
teeth of it: and they said thus unto it, Arise, devour much flesh.
6 After this I beheld, and lo another, like a leopard, which had upon the

back of it four wings of a fowl; the beast had also four heads; and dominion was given to it.
7 After this I saw in the night visions, and behold a fourth beast, dreadful and terrible, and strong exceedingly; and it had great iron teeth: it
devoured and brake in pieces, and stamped the residue with the feet of
it: and it was diverse from all the beasts that were before it; and it had
ten horns.
There is a very close relationship between the image in king Nebuchadnezzars
dream and these four beasts. Of this fact, Orson Pratt tell us, The four beasts, described in the first part of the 7th chapter, are those four kingdoms represented by
the great metallic image of gold, silver, brass, etc. (ibid)
We see the relationship of these kingdoms represented in the chart below.

The nations of Europe

Note that in verse 7 above that the fourth beast (Roman Empire) had ten horns.
That is, the Roman Empire would eventually be replaced by ten lesser nations.
Daniel confirms this in these words, And the ten horns out of this kingdom are
ten kings that shall arise. Of this same fact Orson Pratt says, The Romans, in
turn, lost their universal dominion and great power, and were broken up into little
petty kingdoms, such as now exist. Joseph Fielding Smith confirms this view in
these words:
Daniel had opened to his vision the prophetic history of nations from
his time to the end of the world. He saw the ten kingdoms that should
rise out of the Roman Empire, and, later, another kingdom described as
a little horn with "eyes like the eyes of a man, and a mouth speaking
great things" in blasphemy against the Most High. (Joseph Fielding
Smith, The Progress of Man, 1964], 479.)
In the next verse Daniel tells us of a new development among these nations of
Europe, he says:
8 I considered the horns, and, behold, there came up among them another little horn, before whom there were three of the first horns
plucked up by the roots: and, behold, in this horn were eyes like the
eyes of man, and a mouth speaking great things.

Page 37

As stated before, these horns are nations and so Daniel is telling us here of a little
horn or baby nation. In other words, a new nation comes up among the established nations of Europe and what does it do? It plucked up by the roots three
of the first horns or nations. This is re-stated in verse 24 where it says, And the
ten horns out of this kingdom are ten kings that shall arise: and another shall rise
after them; and he shall be diverse from the first, and he shall subdue three kings.
So a question needs to be asked, what new nation arose from among the nations of
Europe and subdued three of the original nations of Europe? The fact is that Nephi
already gave us this history lesson. We read about it in chapter two where we
quoted Nephi saying:
17 And I beheld that their mother Gentiles were gathered together upon
the waters, and upon the land also, to battle against them.
18 And I beheld that the power of God was with them, and also that the
wrath of God was upon all those that were gathered together against
them to battle.
19 And I, Nephi, beheld that the Gentiles that had gone out of captivity
were delivered by the power of God out of the hands of all other nations. (1 Nephi 13:17-19)
In Americas colonial days there were three nations that had ambitions for the
New World. Along Americas Atlantic coast were the French in the north, the
Spanish in the South and the English in-between. All three lost their bid for control and a new nation was born. Of America or the little horn Daniel said, he
shall subdue three kings.
Events here in America
In verse 9 Daniel confirms that he is talking about events in America. He says:
9 I beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the Ancient of days did
sit, whose garment was white as snow, and the hair of his head like the
pure wool: his throne was like the fiery flame, and his wheels as burning fire.
In the above verse, Daniel says he saw a time when two events would occur. First
he tells us that thrones were cast down and next he says, the Ancient of days
did sit. Take note, this is a sequence! One that we have spoken of in an earlier
chapter. All three Witnesses spoke of the same sequence.

http://www.ayearwithnorainbow.com

A Year With No Rainbow

Page 38

We know from the statements of Joseph Smith and others that the Ancient of
days is Adam and that the location of this event is here in America, at a place
known as Adam-Ondi-Ahman, in Davis County Missouri.
Daniel also saw, in a very specific way, the events or circumstances leading up to
certain thrones that would be cast down before the Ancient of days would
sit. Earlier in this chapter we made special note of Daniels words when he said
that the stone smote the image upon his feet that were of iron and clay, and brake
them to pieces. It should be amply clear by now that he was speaking of the nations of Europe and those who emerge from them.
In an orderly transition, the Lord will throw down the nations of the earth. He begins this transition with America and then later, after the battle of Armageddon,
assumes complete control. In verses 11 & 12 Daniel says:
11 I beheld then because of the voice of the great words which the
(little) horn spake: I beheld even till the beast was slain, and his body
destroyed, and given to the burning flame.
12 As concerning the rest of the beasts, they had their dominion taken
away: yet their lives were prolonged for a season and time.
So the nations represented by the rest of the beastshad their dominion taken
away: yet their lives were prolonged for a season and time. Among these are the
heathen nations. Their time will come when the Lord appears to the Jews at the
battle of Armageddon. This was discussed in chapter 3, Signs of the Times.
Orson Pratt confirms what we have just said in these words:
We read that the four beasts, representing the powers of the earth, will
exist at the time of the coming of the Ancient of Days. And that the
fourth beast, represented by the Roman Empire and the kingdoms that
have grown out of it, will be "slain and his body destroyed and given to
the burning flame." Here then we can read the destiny of that portion of
the inhabitants of the earth constituting the fourth beast: or, in other
words, the destiny of the kingdoms of Europe, who were to arise and
grow out of that fourth power.
Not only the kingdoms and governments of Europe, and the western
portion of Asia are to be thus visited, but also those who have grown
out of these kingdoms, and that have emigrated to this western hemisphere, and elsewhere. For instance, this great republic must pass away
in the manner indicated unless the people repent. (Journal of Dis 2011, Frank M. Keele. All rights reserved.

courses, vol. 18, p. 339)

An explanatory note:
The nations of Europe, and America, which sprang from Europe, receive special
attention in many of the chapters of this book. That is because they are the Gentiles spoken of in the Book of Mormon and are of the tribe of Ephraim. Additionally, they are the nations among whom the great and abominable church is
founded. They are also among the first nations to fall, leading up to the Lords
first millennial appearance at Adam-Ondi-Ahman, being the initial point of impact
of the stone cut out of the mountain without hands. The little horn, or America
(the Gentiles) plays a pivotal roll in this story. Secret combinations, seeking to
overthrow the freedom of all lands, nations, and countries, usurp her powers as
we are told in the Book of Mormon and a cleansing must therefore precede her
millennial glory. Here in chapter 7 Daniel gives even the manner of their destruction. He tells us, I beheld even till the beast was slain, and his body destroyed,
and given to the burning flame. We will discuss this burning flame further in a
later chapter.
The little horn persecutes the saints for 42 months
We now move on to the specific details surrounding the demise of the little horn.
We might also refer to this as the cleansing of America just before the Lord appears or as Daniel said it, I beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the Ancient of days did sit.
In verses 20, 21 & 25 Daniel tells us even of that horn that had eyes, and a mouth
that spake very great thingsthe same horn made war with the saints, and prevailed against themAnd he shall speak great words against the most High, and
shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and
they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.
Daniel sees a time when the little horn or America made war with the saints, and
prevailed against them. This appears to be a war in which words play a large part.
Words of course cannot be spoken by a nation. A nation does not have eyes and a
mouth nor can it speak very great things so this would be the prerogative of
the nations leaders. Under the American constitution it is the president that
speaks for the nation.
Assuming that what we have said above is correct, we have a leader of the United
States that shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the
saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws. So we need to ask
ourselves, can we think of a leader who is known for his oratory or speaking abilhttp://www.ayearwithnorainbow.com

A Year With No Rainbow

Page 40

ity? One who is prone to speak great words against the most High or against
Christians and the Christian beliefs upon which this nation was founded? Or one
who seeks to wear out the saints, or those who believe in Christ and who thinks
to change times and laws or the constitutional principles upon which U. S. law
is founded?
If we were to recognize such a scenario, how long would it be from the commencement of this persecution until the beast (little horn and nations of Europe)
was slain, and his body destroyed, and given to the burning flame? The answer to
this question is given in verse 25. And they shall be given into his hand until a
time and times and the dividing of time. This can be interpreted thusly, a time
= 1 year, times = 2 years and the dividing of time = of a year. So 1+2+1/2 =
3 years or 42 months.
A second witness of these events
Although Daniel sets the stage and gives us a great amount of detail about circumstances, location and timing, he is not the only prophetic witness of these events.
John the revelator also gives us a corroborating account of a beast speaking great
things, making war with the saints to overcome them, who opened his
mouth in blasphemy against God and was allowed to continue forty and two
months. In the 13th chapter of Rev. we read Johns words:
5 And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and
blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two
months.
6 And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme
his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven.
7 And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues,
and nations.
8 And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are
not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of
the world.
9 If any man have an ear, let him hear.
10 He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity: he that killeth
with the sword must be killed with the sword. Here is the patience and
the faith of the saints.
From Johns account we are given one additional identifying aspect of this persecution that is not mentioned by Daniel. In verse six we learn that this beast will
open his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his taber 2011, Frank M. Keele. All rights reserved.

A Year With No Rainbow

Page 41

nacle or temple. And so in addition to all of the other elements of this persecution
we need to look for the blaspheme of a temple, here in America.
Putting it all together
In order to recognize the fulfillment of this prophecy, for what should we be looking? The answer is two fold. 1- An American leader who meets the conditions of
Daniels prophecy discussed above, and. 2- The blaspheming of Godand his
tabernacle or temple, here in America.
The election of such a leader along with the blasphemy of a temple would signal
that this 42-month period had commenced. The 42 months essentially acts as a
countdown to the time when the beast is slain, and his body destroyed and
given to the burning flame. When that happens, the cleansing process has commenced. Have these two conditions been met?
A proposed fulfillment of these events
In the fall of 2008 we all witnessed some very drastic political and economic
changes associated with the election of a new administration. The reverberations
flowing from these events are still very much with us. Global economic slowdown, socialization of banking, auto making and more recently, health care. Mammoth legislative changes implemented without our representatives even reading
the bills. Our elected leaders behaving like dictators and trampling the constitution
under their feet. The list could go on and on. Would it not seem that the people
behind this reckless course think to change times and laws?
But that is only part of the prophecy. There is still the other part in which the beast
will blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle or temple.
Did you notice? Within two days of the time that our present change oriented administration was elected, there was something going on that concluded with the
blasphemy of a temple? (a little thing called Prop 8?) Did you know that the Los
Angeles temple was shut down while protesters marched and shouted? Some carried banners with hateful and degrading language. This was all very well documented in the news and YouTube.
So from the perspective of the author, the signs have been given and a 42 month
countdown has commenced. You can decide for yourself, and should you agree,
you could do the calculations for yourself, as well.

Before closing
Before closing this chapter, let me share one last thought. Quite often when I have
shared these views with my fellow Latter-Day Saints, I find that some are reluctant to accept the idea that we are in the 42 months because of a passage in the
112th section of the Doctrine and Covenants. It reads as follows:
24 Behold, vengeance cometh speedily upon the inhabitants of the
earth, a day of wrath, a day of burning, a day of desolation, of weeping,
of mourning, and of lamentation; and as a whirlwind it shall come upon
all the face of the earth, saith the Lord.
25 And upon my house shall it begin, and from my house shall it go
forth, saith the Lord;
26 First among those among you, saith the Lord, who have professed to
know my name and have not known me, and have blasphemed against
me in the midst of my house, saith the Lord.
Some do not feel the events that have taken place since the fall of 2008 fulfill
these prophetic words because not all of the deeds and acts of the little horn
have been targeted specifically and exclusively upon the church as the above revelation implies. If you are in this camp, let me share a quote from Joseph Fielding
Smith that gives his views about this passage. He said:
In this spirit have the prophets of old spoken of these the last days and
throughout the revelations to the Church through the Prophet Joseph
Smith, similar warnings and information are given. The Lord in this
revelation ("D&C Sec. 112.) declares that "upon my house shall it begin, and from my house shall it go forth, saith the Lord; First among
those among you, saith the Lord, who have professed to know my name
and have not known me, and have blasphemed against me in the midst
of my house, saith the Lord." The Latter-day Saints were called on to
suffer in the early days of the Church and they were punished for their
transgressions. Those who turned away in the spirit of bitterness and
became enemies of the Church did not prosper and the judgments of the
Lord were upon them in fulfillment of this promise. (Joseph Fielding
Smith, Church History and Modern Revelation, 1946-1949, 3:104)
Joseph Fielding Smith understood the significance of Daniels prophecy about the
actions of the little horn, however, he apparently felt that this passage had its
fulfillment at an earlier time in church history.

Even though we have some past general authorities who have applied D&C 112:
25-26 to the future, I find myself in complete agreement with Joseph Fielding
Smith. If he was correct, there is no scriptural or prophetic justification for concluding that we need to have another period of persecution (exclusively upon the
saints) before the Lord comes. This is not to say that we wont see more persecution, we will.
History verifies the Lords words
Consider this. The Lord declared in 1837 And upon my house shall it begin, and
from my house shall it go forth. Since that time, the Lord has poured out all kinds
of judgments upon the earth, we have seen their escalation in recent years. If the
Lord had not allowed judgments to come upon the saints first, and history proves
that it did, his word would have proven to be void. The idea that this persecution
has to happen to the saints again before the final judgments upon the world is not
scriptural so far a I am aware. It is a complete contradiction of what the scripture
says.
I have to say that Joseph Fielding Smiths interpretation is the only one that I find
to be in complete harmony with what the Lord actually said. Its simple, the Lord
said how it would be and history shows that it happened just the way he said it
would.
A scourge and judgment to be poured out upon the children of Zion
Even so, the members of the church in our day are not off the hook as far as calamity and disasters are concerned. I believe that the parable of the ten virgins will
see its fulfillment in large part when these great calamites sweep the earth, culminating in the Lords appearance at Adam-Ondi-Ahman. If we are not faithful, we
shall not stand. As the Lord said in D&C 97:21-26:
21 Therefore, verily, thus saith the Lord, let Zion rejoice, for this is
ZionTHE PURE IN HEART; therefore, let Zion rejoice, while all the
wicked shall mourn.
22 For behold, and lo, vengeance cometh speedily upon the ungodly as
the whirlwind; and who shall escape it?
23 The Lord's scourge shall pass over by night and by day, and the report thereof shall vex all people; yea, it shall not be stayed until the
Lord come;
24 For the indignation of the Lord is kindled against their abominations
and all their wicked works.
25 Nevertheless, Zion shall escape if she observe to do all things whathttp://www.ayearwithnorainbow.com

A Year With No Rainbow

Page 44

soever I have commanded her.

26 But if she observe not to do whatsoever I have commanded her, I
will visit her according to all her works, with sore affliction, with pestilence, with plague, with sword, with vengeance, with devouring fire.
Note in verse 23; the Lords scourge shall not be stayed until the Lord come,
so this event precedes the Lords coming and is part of the trials leading to that
day. In D&C 84:58-59 the Lord says that the members of the church should
bring forth fruit meet for their Father's kingdom; otherwise there remaineth a
scourge and judgment to be poured out upon the children of Zion. For shall the
children of the kingdom pollute my holy land? Verily, I say unto you, Nay.
If we want to rejoice while the wicked shall mourn we must actively seek
to keep his commandments and have his spirit to be with us.
In conclusion, let me say that one thing is for sure, the prophecies of Daniel and
John were inspired declarations and thus will surely come to pass. If you do not
believe that the events of November 2008 rise to that level, then you will have to
continue to look for some other set of circumstances that does.
It is hoped that this chapter has been a helpful addition to your understanding of
these two important chapters of Daniels book. Whatever you choose to believe,
be assured that all that the Lord has spoken about the future or caused to be spoken by his prophets, will surely come to pass. If we are alive and on the earth at
the time of their fulfillment, we will experience these events. There will be no way
around them. If we approach the Lord with humility and contrition of soul he will
surely take us by the hand and guide us through.

Chapter 7
Given to The Burning Flame
Lorenzo Snow once overheard the Prophet Joseph respond to the question. Who
are you? with the reply, Noah came before the flood, I have come before the
fire. (Diary of Abraham H. Cannon, 16:30)
Interesting, isnt it, how Joseph Smith ties Noahs flood in with latter day calamities, characterized by fire? The Lord, having promised Noah that he would never
destroy mankind again by flood, has prepared a different means of destruction for
the wicked in our day. Noting how catastrophic the flood was, and that it is used
as a comparison to our day of burning, should give us pause.
As mentioned in the previous chapter, the nations of Europe and certain other nations, including this nation, will be given to the burning flame according to
Daniels prophecy. Let us read again what Orson Pratt said about this:
We read that the four beasts, representing the powers of the earth, will
exist at the time of the coming of the Ancient of Days. And that the
fourth beast, represented by the Roman Empire and the kingdoms that
have grown out of it, will be "slain and his body destroyed and given to
the burning flame." Here then we can read the destiny of that portion of
the inhabitants of the earth constituting the fourth beast: or, in other
words, the destiny of the kingdoms of Europe who were to arise and
grow out of that fourth power.
(Journal of Dishttp://www.ayearwithnorainbow.com

Secret combinations to be cut off
As the great and abominable church or this great secret combination which
Nephi, Mormon, and Moroni saw among the nations of the Gentiles, conspire to
overthrow liberty and the Constitution as Ezra Taft Benson said, then their
doom is fixed, and they ". . . shall be cut off from among my people who are of the
covenant".
This being cut off from among my people who are of the covenant" has fiery
overtones to it. As quoted in the previous chapter Ezra Taft Benson said:
The great destructive force which was to be turned loose on the earth
and which the prophets for centuries have been calling the
"abomination of desolation" is vividly described by those who saw it in
vision. Ours is the first generation to realize how literally these prophecies can be fulfilled now that God, through science, has unlocked the
secret to thermonuclear reaction. (October general conference, 1961)
No kings in America
Just when this satanic, secret combination, thinks it is about to achieve its goal of
complete dominance and control over America and the world, something happens.
The Lord will not allow those who seek to overthrow America to succeed, for he
has said:
11 And this land shall be a land of liberty unto the Gentiles, and there
shall be no kings upon the land, who shall raise up unto the Gentiles.
12 And I will fortify this land against all other nations.
13 And he that fighteth against Zion shall perish, saith God.
14 For he that raiseth up a king against me shall perish, for I, the Lord,
the king of heaven, will be their king, and I will be a light unto them
forever, that hear my words.
15 Wherefore, for this cause, that my covenants may be fulfilled which
I have made unto the children of men, that I will do unto them while
they are in the flesh, I must needs destroy the secret works of darkness,
and of murders, and of abominations.
16 Wherefore, he that fighteth against Zion, both Jew and Gentile, both
bond and free, both male and female, shall perish; for they are they who
are the whore of all the earth; for they who are not for me are against
me, saith our God. (2 Nephi 10:11-16)

Page 47

Though this great secret combination shall attempt to raise up unto the Gentiles,
the Lords words above show us that he has anticipated this and decreed that there
shall be no kings upon the land.
Nephi gives us even more details about how this great whore, who hath perverted
the right ways of the Lord, yea, that great and abominable church, shall tumble to
the dust. In 1st Nephi, chapter 22, he says:
14 And every nation which shall war against thee, O house of Israel,
shall be turned one against another, and they shall fall into the pit which
they digged to ensnare the people of the Lord. And all that fight against
Zion shall be destroyed, and that great whore, who hath perverted the
right ways of the Lord, yea, that great and abominable church, shall
tumble to the dust and great shall be the fall of it.
15 For behold, saith the prophet, the time cometh speedily that Satan
shall have no more power over the hearts of the children of men; for the
day soon cometh that all the proud and they who do wickedly shall be
as stubble; and the day cometh that they must be burned.
16 For the time soon cometh that the fulness of the wrath of God shall
be poured out upon all the children of men; for he will not suffer that
the wicked shall destroy the righteous.
17 Wherefore, he will preserve the righteous by his power, even if it so
be that the fulness of his wrath must come, and the righteous be preserved, even unto the destruction of their enemies by fire. Wherefore,
the righteous need not fear; for thus saith the prophet, they shall be
saved, even if it so be as by fire.
18 Behold, my brethren, I say unto you, that these things must shortly
come; yea, even blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke must come; and it
must needs be upon the face of this earth; and it cometh unto men according to the flesh if it so be that they will harden their hearts against
the Holy One of Israel.
19 For behold, the righteous shall not perish; for the time surely must
come that all they who fight against Zion shall be cut off.
Pillars and Vapors
Nephis language here is intriguing. He says, that these things must shortly come;
yea, even blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke must come. In the New Testament,
the Doctrine and Covenants and here in the Book of Mormon we read about
vapor of smoke. However, when we read about this same event in Joel chapter
2, he says, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke. Yet, the New Testament quotahttp://www.ayearwithnorainbow.com

tion of Joels words in Acts 2:19, uses the word vapor. I believe that pillars is
what Joel saw and pillars is what we will have when the great and abominable
church is burned. Thus, Vapors and pillars are the same thing. The fire that
burns the great and abominable church of our day will result from
thermonuclear reaction as Ezra Taft Benson said, and will produce the pillars
that Joel saw.
The righteous delivered
Although Joels description of this event is graphic and frightening, note that he,
like Nephi, confirms that the Lord will deliver his people:
30 And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and
fire, and pillars of smoke.
31 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the LORD come.
32 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of
the LORD shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall
be deliverance, as the LORD hath said, and in the remnant whom the
LORD shall call.
Note also that Joel says that The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon
into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the LORD come. These are the
same conditions that were described in chapter four, Three Witnesses. In that
chapter we quoted from Doctrine and Covenants 29 and Elder Bruce R. McConkie
to show that these events occur before the Lord appears at Adam-Ondi-Ahman
and are therefore pre-millennial or sixth seal events. The burning we have been
discussing is not a result of the Lords appearing, for if it were, it would needs be
millennial. That burning, when he appears, will not happen until some time in the
seventh seal. In the next chapter we will look at how the theme of burning is repeated.

Chapter 8

Three Burnings
Yes, Noah came before the flood and Joseph Smith has come before the fire.
As the Lord says in Doctrine and Covenants 112:
24 Behold, vengeance cometh speedily upon the inhabitants of the
earth, a day of wrath, a day of burning, a day of desolation, of weeping,
of mourning, and of lamentation; and as a whirlwind it shall come upon
all the face of the earth, saith the Lord.
The first burning
This day of burning commences in the sixth seal with the burning of the great
and abominable church. We read about it in Doctrine and Covenants 29:21, And
the great and abominable church, which is the whore of all the earth, shall be cast
down by devouring fire. However, the Lord also tells us in this same verse that it
shall be according as it is spoken by the mouth of Ezekiel the prophet, who spoke
of these things, which have not come to pass but surely must.
The second burning
When we go to the words of Ezekiel, we find no reference to the burning of the
great and abominable church of the present day. The only mention of burning we
have from Ezekiel, is of the burning of Gog, at the time of the battle of Armageddon. In Ezekiel 38:18 & 22 we read:
18 And it shall come to pass at the same time when Gog shall come
against the land of Israel, saith the Lord GOD, that my fury shall come
up in my face.
22 And I will plead against him with pestilence and with blood; and I
http://www.ayearwithnorainbow.com

A Year With No Rainbow

will rain upon him, and upon his bands, and upon the many people that
are with him, an overflowing rain, and great hailstones, fire, and brimstone.
So there is apparently two times when the great and abominable church is
burned. The first is in our day, the sixth seal, it is devouring fire and it is a result
of thermonuclear reaction. The second burning is that of Gog at the battle of Armageddon and it is the result of an overflowing rain, and great hailstones, fire,
and brimstone.
The third burning
The third burning will be when the Lord comes in his glory, all that cannot abide a
terrestrial glory shall be consumed. In Doctrine and Covenants 101:23-25 we read:
23 And prepare for the revelation which is to come, when the veil of the
covering of my temple, in my tabernacle, which hideth the earth, shall
be taken off, and all flesh shall see me together.
24 And every corruptible thing, both of man, or of the beasts of the
field, or of the fowls of the heavens, or of the fish of the sea, that dwells
upon all the face of the earth, shall be consumed;
25 And also that of element shall melt with fervent heat; and all things
shall become new, that my knowledge and glory may dwell upon all the
earth.

Chapter 9
The Two Beasts of Revelation 13
The first Beast
John speaks of these two variations of the great and abominable church in the
13th chapter of Revelation, though he refers to them as beasts. In the first ten
verses we read about a beast that has a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months. As
mentioned in the previous chapter, this beast is the same entity that Daniel says
made war with the saints, and prevailed against themAndshall speak great
words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and
think to change times and laws. We read:
1 And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of
the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten
crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy.
2 And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were
as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the
dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority.
3 And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his
deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast.
4 And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast:
and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who is like unto the beast? who
is able to make war with him?
5 And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and
blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two
months.
6 And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme
his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven.
7 And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overhttp://www.ayearwithnorainbow.com

come them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues,
and nations.
This first beast comes up out of the sea, it is the great and abominable church
of the present day. It sits upon many waters and its influence reaches across the
oceans of the earth to all lands.
The second beast
John, speaking of the first beast, tells us in verse three that one of his heads was
wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered
after the beast. This particular nation, represented here as one of the heads of the
beast, will survive this first burning and go on to gather the nations of the Old
World to the battle of Armageddon. It apparently will retain its ability to produce
nuclear weapons, for it has the ability to make fire come down from heaven on
the earth in the sight of men. His ability to do so may be used as a means of coercion and intimidation as he gathers his army of 200 million. This is another manifestation of a day of burning mentioned earlier. In verses 11-13 of Rev. 13 we
read:
11 And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had
two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon.
12 And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and
causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first
beast, whose deadly wound was healed.
13 And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from
heaven on the earth in the sight of men.
This second beast came up out of the earth. Unlike the first beast, it is land
locked. The nations that will make up Gogs armies will be exclusively from the
Old World. While this beast has the same agenda as the first beast and exerciseth
all the power of the first beast before him, the area of the earth where it is dominant does not include the American Zion, which serves as a gathering place and a
refuge for the righteous. While Gogs powers build in the Old World, Israel, along
with the ten tribes, will be gathered to the New World and the American Zion.

A Year With No Rainbow

Page 53

Over a period of a few years, this second beast, or Gog, will solidify its hold on
the Old World and gather an army of 200 million against Jerusalem. Over this
same period of time, in the newly cleansed America, the New Jerusalem will be
built, Zion will put on her beauty in the New World and gathered Israel will
inherit the Gentiles and make the desolate cities to be inhabited here in America.
The brutality of the second beast
The first beast, the great and abominable church of the present day, has gradually gained power over several generations. This is one of the reasons that it has
gone unrecognized by so many in our day. However, this will not be the case with
the second beast. Its time will be very short when compared to the first beast.
Through ruthless and brutal means, it will impose its will on the inhabitants of the
Old World. In verses 13 through 18 we read about its tactics.
13 And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from
heaven on the earth in the sight of men.
14 And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those
miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to
them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the
beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live.
15 And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the
image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would
not worship the image of the beast should be killed.
16 And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and
bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:
17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the
name of the beast, or the number of his name.
18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number
of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.
When this brutal second beast comes to power and demands that all should
worship the image of the beast or be killed, what will the followers of Christ
and other good people in that part of the world do? How shall they survive?
Where will they go? For the answers to these perplexing questions, we go to Doctrine and Covenants section 45 where we will see that the Lord has made provision:
66 And it shall be called the New Jerusalem, a land of peace, a city of
refuge, a place of safety for the saints of the Most High God;
67 And the glory of the Lord shall be there, and the terror of the Lord
http://www.ayearwithnorainbow.com

A Year With No Rainbow

Page 54

also shall be there, insomuch that the wicked will not come unto it, and
it shall be called Zion.
68 And it shall come to pass among the wicked, that every man that
will not take his sword against his neighbor must needs flee unto Zion
for safety.
69 And there shall be gathered unto it out of every nation under heaven;
and it shall be the only people that shall not be at war one with another.
70 And it shall be said among the wicked: Let us not go up to battle
against Zion, for the inhabitants of Zion are terrible; wherefore we cannot stand.
71 And it shall come to pass that the righteous shall be gathered out
from among all nations, and shall come to Zion, singing with songs of
everlasting joy.
Lets plot this out in a graphic form that will help clarify the timeline in the mind
of the reader. To do this we will once again use the illustration we used in chapter
three to show the four appearances of the Second Coming but with some added
explanation.

Chapter 10

The One Thousand Two Hundred and Sixty Days

In chapter six we discussed the significance and timing of the 42 months. If the
events of November, 2008 did in fact fulfill the prophecies of Daniel and John,
then we are presently in what amounts to a 42 month countdown to the time when
the nations of Europe and America will be given to the burning flame.
A simplistic counting of the months, starting with November of 2008, would lead
us to conclude that the actual burning will take place some time in May of 2012.
That is good to know because knowledge is power, but it may be possible to be
even more precise than that.
Forty-two months, multiplied by 30, equals 1260 days. We see this 1260 days represented several places in scripture. For example, in Revelation chapter 12, speaking of a time when the church would be taken from the earth, John, in verse 6
says:
And the woman (church) fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days.
The days here, no doubt, are actually representative of years. Counting backwards
form the restoration of the church in 1830, would set the date that the
woman (church) fled into the wilderness at 570 AD. So apparently, there must
have been priesthood authority somewhere among scattered Israel up to that time.
John repeats this same declaration in verse 14, but this time he uses terms that are
reminiscent of Daniels description of the 42 months. He says And to the woman
were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into
her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the
http://www.ayearwithnorainbow.com

A Year With No Rainbow

Page 56

face of the serpent.

In giving us two descriptions of the same event, John also gives us a key to interpreting the meaning of Daniels words about the little horns persecution of the
saints, and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time. Daniel 7:25.
So we could express it this way. a thousand two hundred and threescore days =
a time, and times, and half a time = a time and times and the dividing of time,
although it may actually represent either days or years.
John applies this same timing to the events leading up to the Lords appearance at
the battle of Armageddon. In Rev. 11:2-3 we read:
2 But the court which is without the temple leave out, and measure it
not; for it is given unto the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they tread
under foot forty and two months.
3 And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth.
This 42 months, 3 years, or 1260 days seems to be a time when the Lord allows
Satan and the forces of evil to have their way, but when the clock runs out, the tables are turned, and righteousness prevails. At that time, as with the restoration of
the gospel, the forces of truth and light will have their day. Allowing evil to prevail for a time sharpens the contrast as satanic forces are overthrown and the light
of the world, even Jesus Christ, steps into plain view of the peoples of the earth.
It is worth noting that 3 years is half of seven. Seven being representative of
perfection, completeness and wholeness. In the Lords scheme of things we have
the seven days of creation, the seven thousand years of the earth temporal existence, seven days of the week, etc. And nowhere in scripture is the number seven
used more redundantly than in the Lords prophecy of the days surrounding his
Second Coming, contained in Johns book of Revelation.
On the other hand, Satans time is constrained to only half of seven. His schemes
are imperfect, incomplete, half-baked and doomed to failure!
I feel impressed to bear my testimony, not only of the omnipotence, perfection and
glory of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the blessing of the atonement, but of the perfection contained in holy writ, as pertaining to prophecy surrounding his Second
Coming. I testify that in the scriptures and statements of modern day prophets, we
have a record that is quite complete. We can and should know what to expect.

Drawing this short chapter to a close, please allow me to suggest that using 1260
days, rather than the 42 months that we discussed in chapter 6 will get us much
closer to the actual day of burning, since our present calendar is not made up of
twelve, 30 day months. Using this 1260 day formula and counting forward from
November 7, 2008, we arrive at April rather than May, with the day being the 21st.
This according to the calculations of your humble servant.

Chapter 11

A Proposed Sequence of Events in

The Year With No Rainbow
The proposed sequences of events below are intended as a general guide. They
were arrived at through long hours of study, pondering and picking up on clues
contained in scriptural passages and statements of the prophets. There is no doubt
that some of the events will over lap or occur at the same time as others.
42 months persecution of the saints
Actually, by the time the Year With No Rainbow opens, this 42 month countdown will have less than four months to go but it still qualifies as a significant
event in that year.
Missionaries called home
There is no reason to assume that this particular event has to commence in the
Year With No Rainbow, it could begin at anytime prior to the great calamities
of that year.
Commencing with the earliest days of the restoration, heavenly messengers were
sent to warn the people, through Gods prophets, of the coming and nearness of the
great day of the Lord. Of Moronis very first visit, the prophet Joseph Smith said:
he informed me of great judgments which were coming upon the
earth, with great desolations by famine, sword, and pestilence; and that
these grievous judgments would come on the earth in this generation.
(Joseph Smith History, verse 45.)
In the 88th section of the Doctrine and Covenants, the Lord instructs us concerning

Page 59

our responsibility of warning our neighbor, he said:

81 Behold, I sent you out to testify and warn the people, and it becometh every man who hath been warned to warn his neighbor.
82 Therefore, they are left without excuse, and their sins are upon their
own heads.
83 He that seeketh me early shall find me, and shall not be forsaken.
84 Therefore, tarry ye, and labor diligently, that you may be perfected
in your ministry to go forth among the Gentiles for the last time, as
many as the mouth of the Lord shall name, to bind up the law and seal
up the testimony, and to prepare the saints for the hour of judgment
which is to come;
85 That their souls may escape the wrath of God, the desolation of
abomination which awaits the wicked, both in this world and in the
world to come. Verily, I say unto you, let those who are not the first
elders continue in the vineyard until the mouth of the Lord shall call
them, for their time is not yet come; their garments are not clean from
the blood of this generation.
A part of what our missionaries accomplish in their labors is to bind up the law
and seal up the testimony that the inhabitants of the earth may be left without
excuse, and their sins may be upon their own heads. All of this preaching is to
precede the desolation of abomination which awaits the wicked. The Lord further explains:
87 For not many days hence and the earth shall tremble and reel to and
fro as a drunken man; and the sun shall hide his face, and shall refuse to
give light; and the moon shall be bathed in blood; and the stars shall
become exceedingly angry, and shall cast themselves down as a fig that
falleth from off a fig-tree.
The sequence mentioned in verse 87 above is pre-millennial and so it occurs before the Lord appears at Adam-Ondi-Ahman. We can confirm this by reading
Johns words in Rev. 6:12-13 which says:
And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a
great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the
moon became as blood;
And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her
untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind.
Relating to what the Lord said in verse 84 above about bind(ing) up the law and
http://www.ayearwithnorainbow.com

A Year With No Rainbow

Page 60

seal(ing) up the testimony, he next says:

88 And after your testimony cometh wrath and indignation upon the
people.
89 For after your testimony cometh the testimony of earthquakes, that
shall cause groanings in the midst of her, and men shall fall upon the
ground and shall not be able to stand.
90 And also cometh the testimony of the voice of thunderings, and the
voice of lightnings, and the voice of tempests, and the voice of the
waves of the sea heaving themselves beyond their bounds.
91 And all things shall be in commotion; and surely, men's hearts shall
fail them; for fear shall come upon all people.
After the Lord is satisfied that the peoples of the earth and the Gentiles in particular have been sufficiently warned and that the church as a whole is clean from the
blood of this generation, He will begin to preach his own sermons. Before this
happens however, He will call the missionaries home. On this subject President
Brigham Young said:
Do you think there is calamity abroad now among the people? Not
much. All we have yet heard and all we have experienced is scarcely a
preface to the sermon that is going to be preached. When the testimony
of the Elders ceases to be given, and the Lord says to them, "Come
home; I will now preach my own sermons to the nations of the earth,"
all you now know can scarcely be called a preface to the sermon that
will be preached with fire and sword, tempests, earthquakes, hail, rain,
thunders and lightnings, and fearful destruction. What matters the destruction of a few railway cars? You will hear of magnificent cities,
now idolized by the people, sinking in the earth, entombing the inhabitants. The sea will heave itself beyond its bounds, engulfing mighty cities. Famine will spread over the nations, and nation will rise up against
nation, kingdom against kingdom, and states against states, in our own
country and in foreign lands; and they will destroy each another, caring
not for the blood and lives of their neighbors, of their families, or for
their own lives. (In Bowery, July 15, 1860, JD8:123) TLDP:344-45
No rainbow
Since chapter five covered this sign quite extensively, to elaborate further would
be unnecessarily redundant. It is sufficient it to say that since there will be no rainbow in that year, this token should be noticeable before the burning commences.

Great and Abominable Church burned

This particular burning of the great and abominable church, as has been mentioned before is pre-millennial and is therefore a sixth seal event. It is the burning
of the forth beast as mentioned in our commentary in chapter six, where those nations who descended from the Roman Empire are given to the burning flame as
mentioned by Daniel and confirmed by Orson Pratt. It comes at the end of the day
of the Gentiles, has fiery overtones, and contributes to cleansing America of the
secret combinations as witnessed to by Ezra Taft Benson in chapter four, witness
three.
In the 29th section of the Doctrine and Covenants the Lord gives us a somewhat
gruesome account of the desolation associated with the burning of the Great and
Abominable Church. Starting with verse 14 we read:
14 But, behold, I say unto you that before this great day shall come the
sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall be turned into blood, and the
stars shall fall from heaven, and there shall be greater signs in heaven
above and in the earth beneath;
15 And there shall be weeping and wailing among the hosts of men;
16 And there shall be a great hailstorm sent forth to destroy the crops of
the earth.
17 And it shall come to pass, because of the wickedness of the world,
that I will take vengeance upon the wicked, for they will not repent; for
the cup of mine indignation is full; for behold, my blood shall not
cleanse them if they hear me not.
18 Wherefore, I the Lord God will send forth flies upon the face of the
earth, which shall take hold of the inhabitants thereof, and shall eat
their flesh, and shall cause maggots to come in upon them;
19 And their tongues shall be stayed that they shall not utter against me;
and their flesh shall fall from off their bones, and their eyes from their
sockets;
20 And it shall come to pass that the beasts of the forest and the fowls
of the air shall devour them up.
21 And the great and abominable church, which is the whore of all the
earth, shall be cast down by devouring fire, according as it is spoken by
the mouth of Ezekiel the prophet, who spoke of these things, which
have not come to pass but surely must, as I live, for abominations shall
not reign.
Note that in verse 16 we have a great hailstorm sent forth to destroy the crops of
the earth. This will be real hail, as in frozen balls ice, and is not to be associated

with a great hail out of heaven, every stone about the weight of a talent as mentioned by John, since the two events are in entirely different seals. The great hail
John tells us about occurs at the time to the battle of Armageddon and is therefore
much more likely to be the great hailstones, (of) fire, and brimstone as prophesied by Ezekiel.
In the aftermath of such a nuclear holocaust the earth will be encircled with radioactive fallout and survivors will not have the option of immediately burying the
dead. Under these circumstances Lord tells us:
I the Lord God will send forth flies upon the face of the earth, which
shall take hold of the inhabitants thereof, and shall eat their flesh, and
shall cause maggots to come in upon them; And their tongues shall be
stayed that they shall not utter against me; and their flesh shall fall from
off their bones, and their eyes from their sockets; And it shall come to
pass that the beasts of the forest and the fowls of the air shall devour
them up.
All of this at the time when, the great and abominable church, which is the whore
of all the earth, shall be cast down by devouring fire.
Sun darkened, moon turned to blood, stars fall from heaven
As mentioned above, this sign is closely associated with the burning of the great
and abominable church and may well be a result of that burning. It is a sign that
when noted in scripture is accompanied with a notation such as, before that great
day shall come or before the great and the terrible day of the LORD come etc.
This sign is described in Rev. 6:12, in these words, And I beheld when he had
opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became
black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood. Commenting on this
verse, Elder Bruce R. McConkie has said:
As a prelude to our Lord's glorious return, such transcendent events
shall occur, both in heaven and on earth, that there is no language
known to mortals, nor any imagery or illustration, which can convey to
them the wonders of that dreadful day.
"The earth shall reel to and fro like a drunkard" (Isa. 24:20), causing
such an earthquake as has never before been known (Rev. 16:17-21),
and it shall appear to man on earth as though the stars in the sidereal
heavens are falling. And in addition, as here recorded, some heavenly
meteors or other objects, appearing as stars, will fall "unto the earth."

Page 63

Indeed, the events of that day shall be so unprecedented and so beyond

human experience, that the prophets are and have been at an almost total loss for words to describe those realities pressed in upon them by the
spirit of revelation. And we can envision only in small measure the
great events which they saw and understood by the power of the Spirit;
that is, we are so limited unless and until we enjoy the same Spirit and
see the same things which that God who is no respecter of persons revealed to them.
This much, however, we do know: Toward the end of the sixth seal the
everlasting gospel has been restored, and it is now being preached to
the nations of the earth. Soon that universal war and desolation destined
to usher in and accompany the Second Coming itself shall commence.
"And immediately after the tribulation of those days, the sun shall be
darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall
from heaven, and the powers of heaven shall be shaken.... Then shall
appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven, and then shall all the
tribes of the earth mourn; and they shall see the Son of Man coming in
the clouds of heaven, with power and great glory." (Jos. Smith 1:33-36;
Matt. 24:29.)
In the midst of a recitation of the woes that shall befall the world,
Isaiah inserts a similar assertion: "For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light; the sun shall be darkened in
his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine." (Isa.
13:10; 24:23.) And speaking of the events to precede his coming, and
of the glorious resurrection which shall attend it, the Lord by latter-day
revelation gives us this confirmation of the same events: "Before this
great day shall come the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall be
turned into blood, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and there shall
be greater signs in heaven above and in the earth beneath." (D. & C.
29:14; 133:49.) (Bruce R. McConkie, Doctrinal New Testament Commentary, 3 vols. 3: 488.)
A great hailstorm sent forth to destroy the crops of the earth
In the 29th section of the Doctrine and Covenants the Lord speaks of a great hail
storm. We read:
14 But, behold, I say unto you that before this great day shall come the
sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall be turned into blood, and the
stars shall fall from heaven, and there shall be greater signs in heaven
http://www.ayearwithnorainbow.com

Page 64

above and in the earth beneath;

15 And there shall be weeping and wailing among the hosts of men;
16 And there shall be a great hailstorm sent forth to destroy the crops of
the earth.
Note that this event is associated with the sun being darkened, the moon being
turned to blood and the stars falling from heaven. This is obviously a sixth seal
even. The Lord introduces the events in verses 14 through 21 as before this great
day or the millennial day, which he speaks of in the verses just preceding verse
14. See also Rev. 6:12-13.
An overflowing scourge, for a desolating sickness
In Doctrine and Covenants section 45 we read:
28 And when the times of the Gentiles is come in, a light shall break forth among
them that sit in darkness, and it shall be the fulness of my gospel;
29 But they receive it not; for they perceive not the light, and they turn their hearts
from me because of the precepts of men.
30 And in that generation shall the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled.
31 And there shall be men standing in that generation, that shall not pass until they
shall see an overflowing scourge; for a desolating sickness shall cover the land.
32 But my disciples shall stand in holy places, and shall not be moved; but among
the wicked, men shall lift up their voices and curse God and die.
Notice how this scourge and desolating sickness are like atomic weapons and radioactive fallout. This scourge has a byproduct, a desolating sickness. So if
the scourge is atomic weapons, the radioactive fallout which it produces could be
the cause of the desolating sickness (radiation sickness). Like the burning of
the great and abominable church, it happens when the times of the Gentiles be
fulfilled and so is part of the cleansing process. It precedes the Lords appearing at
Adam-Ondi-Ahman because as we are told in D&C 97:23, The Lord's scourge
shall pass over by night and by day, and the report thereof shall vex all people;
yea, it shall not be stayed until the Lord come. Like radioactive fallout, this,
desolating sickness will cover the land.
Until the indignation be overpast
In the case of a world wide nuclear holocaust, those are to survive the burning
must remain indoors, in order to avoid the affects of nuclear fallout. Perhaps this is
what the Lord had in mind when he gave us, through his prophet Isaiah, these
words:

Page 65

Come, my people, enter thou into thy chambers, and shut thy doors
about thee: hide thyself as it were for a little moment, until the indignation be overpast.
For, behold, the LORD cometh out of his place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity: the earth also shall disclose her
blood, and shall no more cover her slain. (Isaiah 26:20-21.)
Note that when the LORD cometh out of his place to punish the inhabitants of
the earth for their iniquity that the earth also shall disclose her blood, and shall
no more cover her slain. How similar is this passage to what the Lord said in
Doctrine and Covenants 29:18-20, where he describes what will happen when the
great and abominable church is burned with devouring fire:
18 Wherefore, I the Lord God will send forth flies upon the face of the
earth, which shall take hold of the inhabitants thereof, and shall eat
their flesh, and shall cause maggots to come in upon them;
19 And their tongues shall be stayed that they shall not utter against me;
and their flesh shall fall from off their bones, and their eyes from their
sockets;
20 And it shall come to pass that the beasts of the forest and the fowls
of the air shall devour them up.
Isaiahs words above have the feel of, and are reminiscing of the first pass over
that the Israelites observed while residing in Egypt. The scourge mentioned above
also has this same tone and feel, where it says, The Lord's scourge shall pass over
by night and by day. It may indeed be wise to include provisions for such an
eventuality as we prepare for the difficult days ahead.
Anarchy , civil war, pestilence
If a hurricane such as Katrina can throw a portion of the nation into total chaos,
what will the aftermath of an all out nuclear war produce? Perhaps these words of
the Prophet Joseph Smith provide the answer to our question:
"And now I am prepared to say by the authority of Jesus Christ, that not
many years shall pass away before the United States shall present such
a scene of bloodshed as has not a parallel in the history of our nation;
pestilence, hail, famine, and earthquake will sweep the wicked of this
generation from off the face of the land, to open and prepare the way
for the return of the lost tribes of Israel from the north country." Joseph
Smith Jr. (Ibid., 1:315-16.) (History of the Church of Jesus Christ of

Latter-day Saints, 2nd ed. rev., edited by B. H. Roberts, 7 vols. 193251], 6:58.)
Speaking of the Civil War, and of a future war and its affects upon the United
States, John Taylor stated:
"Were we surprised when the last terrible war took place here in the
United States?
No; good Latter-day Saints were not, for they had been told about it.
Joseph Smith had told them where it would start, that it should be a terrible time of bloodshed and that it should start in South Carolina. But I
tell you today the end is not yet. You will see worse things than that, for
God will lay his hand upon this nation, and they will feel it more terribly than ever they have done before; there will be more bloodshed,
more ruin, more devastation than never they have seen before. Write it
down! You will see it come to pass; it is only just starting in. And
would you feel to rejoice? No; I would feel sorry. I knew very well myself when this last war was commencing, and could have wept and did
weep, over this nation; but there is yet to come a sound of war, trouble
and distress, in which brother will be arrayed against brother, father
against son, son against father, a scene of desolation and destruction
that will permeate our land until it will be a vexation to hear the report
thereof. (Journal of Discourses, 26 vols. [London: Latter-day Saints'
Book Depot, 1854-1886], 20: 319.)
A group of saints return to Jackson County
The burning of the great and abominable church and the fall of this great Gentile
nation will clear the way for the saints to return to Jackson County in preparation
for the meeting at Adam-Ondi-Ahman and the building of the New Jerusalem. As
to the timing of their return, Orson Pratt tells us:
Well then, to return to the prophesying, when the time shall come that
the Lord shall waste away this nation, he will give commandment to
this people to return and possess their own inheritance which they purchased some forty-four years ago in the state of Missouri. (Gerald N.
Lund, The Coming of the Lord ,110.)
Apparently, the saints will return to Jackson County at a time of great turmoil.
One would suppose that they will encounter some difficulty under such circumstances, however, according to the prophetic word, they will journey under the
watch care of heaven. Of this event, Orson Pratt stated:

A Year With No Rainbow

Page 67

We shall go back to Jackson County. Not that all this people will leave
these mountains, or all be gathered together in a camp, but when we go
back there will be a very large organization consisting of thousands,
and tens of thousands, and they will march forward, the glory of God
overshadowing their camp by day in the form of a cloud, and a pillar of
flaming fire by night, the Lord's voice being uttered forth before his
army ....
Will not this produce terror upon all the nations of the earth? Will not
armies of this description, though they may not be as numerous as the
armies of the world, cause a terror to fall upon the nations? The Lord
says the banners of Zion shall be terrible. If only one or two millions of
this people were to go down and build the waste places of Zion, would
it strike the people of Asia and Europe with terror? Not particularly,
unless there was some supernatural power made manifest. But when the
Lord's presence is there, when his voice is heard, and his angels go before the camp, it will be telegraphed to the uttermost parts of the earth
and fear will seize upon all people, especially the wicked, and the knees
of the ungodly will tremble in that day, and the high ones that are on
high, and the great men of the earth. (Gerald N. Lund, The Coming of
the Lord, 109.)
A remnant of Jacob to tread down the Gentiles
The fall of this great Gentile nation apparently has multiple causes, in addition to
the burning, civil war and natural disasters, the Lord has said:
And my people who are a remnant of Jacob shall be among the Gentiles, yea, in the midst of them as a lion among the beasts of the forest,
as a young lion among the flocks of sheep, who, if he go through both
treadeth down and teareth in pieces, and none can deliver. 3 Nephi
21:12
The Lord has repeated this prophecy multiple times and so we can be very certain
of its fulfillment. Likewise, all the Lords words concerning the demise of the
Gentiles will surly come to pass, every jot and tittle. Daniel H. Wells who served
in the First Presidency with Brigham Young, places the fulfillment of this prophecy just after their revolutionary battles or civil wars, he said:
To add to the sufferings and great calamities of the American nation,
they will be greatly distressed by the aborigines, who will "marshall

themselves, and become exceeding angry and shall vex them with a
sore vexation." This event, we believe, may not take place in its fulness
until the nation has been greatly weakened by the death of millions in
their own revolutionary battles. To what extent the Indians will have
power over the nation, is not stated in this revelation; but from what
Jesus informed their forefathers at the time of his personal ministry
among them, as recorded in the Book of Mormon, they will have power
in a great measure over the whole nation. In speaking upon this subject,
Jesus prophesied as follows:
"Therefore, it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not believe in my
words, who am Jesus Christ, which the Father shall cause him" (Joseph
Smith) "to bring forth unto the Gentiles, and shall give unto him power
that he shall bring them forth unto the Gentiles, (it shall be done even as
Moses said) they shall be cut off from among any of my people who are
of the covenant; and my people, who are a remnant of Jacob shall be
among the Gentiles, yea, in the midst of them, as a lion among the
beasts of the forest, as a young lion among the flocks of sheep, who if
he go through, both treadeth down and teareth in pieces, and none can
deliver." (3 Nephi 21:11-12)
(Daniel H. Wells, Millennial Star, March 25, 1865, 27:186-87.)
Sign of the Son of Man is seen in the heavens
In one of Joseph Smiths statements regarding the year with no rainbow he said:
When the bow shall cease, then shall come famine, wars, and so forth,
after which the sign of the Son of Man shall be seen in heaven. So this
sign follows famine, wars and so forth.
In chapter 5 we asked this question:
If the sign of the Son of Man appears just before the Lord appears at AdamOndi-Ahman, an event that the world at large will not witness, being in total darkness. Could it be that this sign, which appears as a light in the East could be the
Lord and the host of heaven which accompany him? Then, before he arrives, the
lights go out and the world at large is unable to confirm his arrival? If this be correct, then Joseph Smiths statement, wherein he says, But the Son of Man will
come as the sign of the coming of the Son of Man takes on a completely different
meaning.
As further evidence of the possibility of this interpretation being correct, let us
examine two very similar statements on the subject by Joseph Smith. First we

read:
then will appear one grand sign of the Son of Man in heaven. But what
will the world do? They will say it is a planet, a comet, etc. But the Son
of Man will come as the sign of the coming of the Son of Man, which
will be as the light of the morning cometh out of the east. (In General
conference, convened on the floor of the Nauvoo Temple, April 6,
1843) HC5:337; TPJS:286-87
In the second statement the Prophet starts out by speaking of the Sign of the coming of the Son of Man as spoken of by or Lord in Matthew 24, says the Prophet:
He says then shall they see the Sign of the comeing of the Son of Man
in the clouds of Heaven. How are we to see it Ans. As the lighting up of
the morning or the dawning of the morning cometh from the east and
shineth unto the westSo also is the comeing of the Son of Man. The
dawning of the morning makes its appearance in the east and moves
along gradualy so also will the comeing of the Son of Man be. it will be
small at its first appearance and gradually becomes larger untill every
eye shall see it. Shall the Saints understand it Oh yes. Paul says so.
Shall the wicked understand Oh no they attribute it to a natural cause.
They will probably suppose it is two great comets comeing in contact
with each other. (Joseph Smith, The Words of Joseph Smith: The Contemporary Accounts of the Nauvoo Discourses of the Prophet Joseph,
Andrew F. Ehat and Lyndon W. Cook, 180 - 181.)
Note that from the point where Joseph Smith says, So also is the coming of the
Son of Man, he is speaking of the actual coming of the Son of Man rather than
the Sign of the Son of Man. Yet, he speaks in very similar language in both
cases.
When he speaks of the sign of the Son of Man he says: But what will the
world do? They will say it is a planet, a comet, etc. When he speaks of the actual
coming of the Son of Man he says: They will probably suppose it is two great
comets comeing in contact with each other. It appears that in the mind of the
prophet there was no difference between the Sign of the Son of Man and the actual coming of the Son of Man.
Earthquake, tsunami, all manner of natural disasters
Having given the peoples of the earth a sign, the Sign of the Son of Man we
next have an event that will be reminiscent of the Lords appearance to the

Nephites, here upon the American continent. These events left the inhabitants of
America in total darkness. We read the account from 3 Nephi 8:5-20:
5 And it came to pass in the thirty and fourth year, in the first month, on
the fourth day of the month, there arose a great storm, such an one as
never had been known in all the land.
6 And there was also a great and terrible tempest; and there was terrible
thunder, insomuch that it did shake the whole earth as if it was about to
divide asunder.
7 And there were exceedingly sharp lightnings, such as never had been
known in all the land.
8 And the city of Zarahemla did take fire.
9 And the city of Moroni did sink into the depths of the sea, and the
inhabitants thereof were drowned.
10 And the earth was carried up upon the city of Moronihah, that in the
place of the city there became a great mountain.
11 And there was a great and terrible destruction in the land southward.
12 But behold, there was a more great and terrible destruction in the
land northward; for behold, the whole face of the land was changed,
because of the tempest and the whirlwinds, and the thunderings and the
lightnings, and the exceedingly great quaking of the whole earth;
13 And the highways were broken up, and the level roads were spoiled,
and many smooth places became rough.
14 And many great and notable cities were sunk, and many were
burned, and many were shaken till the buildings thereof had fallen to
the earth, and the inhabitants thereof were slain, and the places were
left desolate.
15 And there were some cities which remained; but the damage thereof
was exceedingly great, and there were many in them who were slain.
16 And there were some who were carried away in the whirlwind; and
whither they went no man knoweth, save they know that they were carried away.
17 And thus the face of the whole earth became deformed, because of
the tempests, and the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the quaking
of the earth.
18 And behold, the rocks were rent in twain; they were broken up upon
the face of the whole earth, insomuch that they were found in broken
fragments, and in seams and in cracks, upon all the face of the land.
19 And it came to pass that when the thunderings, and the lightnings,
and the storm, and the tempest, and the quakings of the earth did
ceasefor behold, they did last for about the space of three hours; and
it was said by some that the time was greater; nevertheless, all these

great and terrible things were done in about the space of three hours
and then behold, there was darkness upon the face of the land.
20 And it came to pass that there was thick darkness upon all the face
of the land, insomuch that the inhabitants thereof who had not fallen
could feel the vapor of darkness
In chapter four, witness two, we learned that when the Lord comes to AdamOndi-Ahman, the sun shall hide his face in shame, and the moon shall withhold
its light, and the stars shall be hurled from their places, leaving the world in darkness. The above passage of scripture gives us an explanation of the events leading
to a thick darkness upon all the face of the land before he appeared to the
Nephites.
It seems reasonable that when this sign of darkness is repeated in the near future,
that the cause may also be the same. Speaking of the sermon that is going to be
preached before the Lord appears, President Brigham Young stated:
When the testimony of the Elders ceases to be given, and the Lord
says to them, "Come home; I will now preach my own sermons to the
nations of the earth," all you now know can scarcely be called a preface
to the sermon that will be preached withtempests, earthquakes, hail,
rain, thunders and lightnings, and fearful destruction...You will hear of
magnificent cities, now idolized by the people, sinking in the earth, entombing the inhabitants. The sea will heave itself beyond its bounds,
engulfing mighty cities (In Bowery, July 15, 1860, JD8:123)
TLDP:344-45
In attempting to show a relationship between natural disasters and the condition of
darkness that will prevail, it should be understood that there is no evidence that
natural disasters are confined to just this time alone.
Sun darkened, moon gives no light, stars fall from heaven
There are two scriptural declarations relating to the Second Coming that are very
similar. Because of their similarities, it is easy to assume that the statements are
interchangeable. We will here attempt to show how different and specific these
two statements are. The first statement speaks of the moon being red or as
blood. Our first example comes from Revelation 6, we read:
12 And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a
great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the
moon became as blood;
http://www.ayearwithnorainbow.com

A Year With No Rainbow

Page 72

13 And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth
her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind.
John tells us that this events occurred when he had opened the sixth seal, so we
have no doubt as to when this happens. The scriptures repeatedly tell us that this
event would happen before the Second Coming. For example in Doctrine and
Covenants 29:14 we read:
But, behold, I say unto you that before this great day shall come the
sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall be turned into blood, and the
stars shall fall from heaven.
We read another example from Joel 2:31:
The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before
the great and the terrible day of the LORD come.
Now we look at statements where the moon, rather than being red, gives no light.
From Joseph Smith-Matthew we read:
33 And immediately after the tribulation of those days, the sun shall be
darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall
from heaven, and the powers of heaven shall be shaken
Similarly, in Isaiah 13:9-10 we read:
9 Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, cruel both with wrath and
fierce anger, to lay the land desolate: and he shall destroy the sinners
thereof out of it.
10 For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give
their light: the sun shall be darkened in his going forth, and the moon
shall not cause her light to shine.
The scriptures frequently specify that the moon is to be red or as blood before the
Lord comes, but this is never mentioned when speaking of the moon not giving its
light. Why is that? Answer, because they are not speaking of the same event.
The moon appearing as blood occurs before the Lord comes, while the moon not
giving its light occurs when or just barely before the Lord comes.
We are able to confirm this by reading what the Lord tells us about his Second
Coming in Doctrine and Covenants 133, we read:
2011, Frank M. Keele. All rights reserved.

Page 73

46 And it shall be said: Who is this that cometh down from God in
heaven with dyed garments; yea, from the regions which are not
known, clothed in his glorious apparel, traveling in the greatness of his
strength?
47 And he shall say: I am he who spake in righteousness, mighty to
save.
48 And the Lord shall be red in his apparel, and his garments like him
that treadeth in the wine-vat.
49 And so great shall be the glory of his presence that the sun shall hide
his face in shame, and the moon shall withhold its light, and the stars
shall be hurled from their places.
The moon being turned to blood occurs first in the sequence. It appears to be
related to the burning of the great and abominable church, as we read earlier.
Please read from Doctrine and Covenants 29:14-21 for the details.
Christ speaks to the nations
When the Lord comes as a thief in the night the world will be in darkness. Like
the Nephites, modern man will experience this phenomenon first hand.
In section 133 of the Doctrine and Covenants we learn that a time will come when
the Lord shall utter his voice out of Zion, and he shall speak from Jerusalem, and
his voice shall be heard among all people. (D&C 133:21.)
Not only does this section tell us where the Lord will be when he speaks to the
nations, but it also gives us a sequence. His first appearance will be in Zion, at
Adam-Ondi-Ahman, it is from this location that the peoples of the earth, who will
quite literally be in darkness, the sun, moon and stars having withheld their light,
will hear his voice. For his voice shall be heard: I have trodden the wine-press
alone, and have brought judgment upon all people; and none were with me; And I
have trampled them in my fury, and I did tread upon them in mine anger, and their
blood have I sprinkled upon my garments, and stained all my raiment; for this was
the day of vengeance which was in my heart. (D&C 133:50-51.)
Similarly, we read from the 43rd section of the Doctrine and Covenants, Behold,
the day has come, when the cup of the wrath of mine indignation is full:
23 And again, the Lord shall utter his voice out of heaven, saying:
Hearken, O ye nations of the earth, and hear the words of that God who
made you.

Page 74

24 O, ye nations of the earth, how often would I have gathered you together as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, but ye would
not!
25 How oft have I called upon you by the mouth of my servants, and by
the ministering of angels, and by mine own voice, and by the voice of
thunderings, and by the voice of lightnings, and by the voice of tempests, and by the voice of earthquakes, and great hailstorms, and by the
voice of famines and pestilences of every kind, and by the great sound
of a trump, and by the voice of judgment, and by the voice of mercy all
the day long, and by the voice of glory and honor and the riches of eternal life, and would have saved you with an everlasting salvation, but ye
would not! (D&C 43:23-25.)
Of the Lords word contained in section 43, verses 17-23, Orson Pratt said:
Here we perceive how long the Lord will bear with the peopleall the
day long, stretching forth his hand, pleading with them by the voice of
lightnings, thunders, earthquakes, great hailstorms, famines, pestilences
of every kind, and by the voice of mercy and judgment, yet they will
not repent, but will harden their hearts when all these things go forth
among them, from nation to nation, people to people, and from kingdom to kingdom, and they will refuse the message of salvation. It is
true that the Lord has not yet spoken by the voice of thunders, calling
upon the people from the ends of the earth, saying, "Repent and prepare
for the great day of the Lord," but such an event will come; and when it
does come it will not be a mere ordinary, common thunderstorm, such
as we experience occasionally, extending only over a small extent of
country, but the Lord will cause the thunders to utter their voices from
the ends of the earth until they sound in the ears of all that live, and
these thunders shall use the very words here predicted"Repent, O ye
inhabitants of the earth, and prepare the way of the Lord, prepare yourselves for the great day of the Lord." These words will be distinctly
heard by every soul that lives, whether in America, Asia, Africa,
Europe, or upon the islands of the sea. And not only the thunders, but
the lightnings will utter forth their voices in the ears of all that live, saying, "Repent, for the great day of the Lord is come." Besides the voices
of thunder and lightning, the Lord himself, before he comes in his

live commanding them to repent and to prepare for his coming. (JD,

We have already spoken much about this event so we will content ourselves here
with a summation as given by Joseph Fielding Smith. Most noteworthy are some
key phrases such as, At that time there will be a transfer of authority from the
usurper and imposter, Lucifer, to the rightful King, Jesus Christ, Jesus Christ.
Our Lord will then assume the reigns of government and He, whose right it is to
rule, will be installed officially by the voice of the Priesthood there assembled:
Not many years hence there shall be another gathering of high priests
and righteous souls in this same valley of Adam-ondi-Ahman. At this
gathering Adam, the Ancient of Days, will again be present. At this
time the vision which Daniel saw will be enacted. The Ancient of Days
will sit. There will stand before him those who have held the keys of all
dispensations, who shall render up their stewardships to the first Patriarch of the race, who holds the keys of salvation. This shall be a day of
judgment and preparation
It was in the night vision that all this was shown to Daniel, and he saw
the Son of Man come to the grand council, as he did to the first grand
council in the valley of Adam-ondi-Ahman, and there he received the
keys from Adam
When this gathering is held, the world will not know of it; the members of the Church at large will not know of it, yet it shall be preparatory to the coming in the clouds of glory of our Savior Jesus Christ as

the Prophet Joseph Smith has said. The world cannot know of it. The
Saints cannot know of it-except those who officially shall be called into
this council-for it shall precede the coming of Jesus Christ as a thief in
the night, unbeknown to all the world. (Joseph Fielding Smith, The
Way to Perfection, 291.)
The Seventh Seal opens, Christs Millennial rein begins
Speaking of the events just mentioned, the Lord says in Doctrine and Covenants
29:
9 For the hour is nigh and the day soon at hand when the earth is ripe;
and all the proud and they that do wickedly shall be as stubble; and I
will burn them up, saith the Lord of Hosts, that wickedness shall not be
upon the earth;
10 For the hour is nigh, and that which was spoken by mine apostles
must be fulfilled; for as they spoke so shall it come to pass;
Is the Lords appearance at Adam-Ondi-Ahman millennial? Does it open the seventh seal? In the above verses the Lord himself defines it for us. After declaring in
verse 11, I will reveal myself from heaven with power and great glory, with all
the hosts thereof, and dwell in righteousness with men on earth a thousand years.
He tells us in verse 12 that the Twelve which were with me in my ministry at Jerusalem, shall stand at my right hand at the day of my coming in a pillar of fire
to judge the whole house of Israel.
This judgment will take place at Adam-Ondi-Ahman, and yes, it is millennial we
have the Lords word on it.

Chapter 12
An Unprecedented Gathering of Israel
The primary purpose of this book is to warn, and inform of events just ahead.
However, in this chapter we will consider the aftermath or what follows the year
with no rainbow, which culminates with the meeting at Adam-Ondi-Ahman. We
should be looking forward to this time with faith, hope and an enlightened anticipation.
In previous chapters we have spoken of the distraction of the wicked or abomination of desolation that occurs in this year with no rainbow. We have documented
that when Christ does come, the world will be in darkness. Now we read of this
event again. In Moses chapter 7 we are told that the day shall come that the earth
shall rest, but before that day the heavens shall be darkened, and a veil of darkness
shall cover the earth. In verses 60-62 we read:
60 And the Lord said unto Enoch: As I live, even so will I come in the
last days, in the days of wickedness and vengeance, to fulfil the oath
which I have made unto you concerning the children of Noah;
61 And the day shall come that the earth shall rest, but before that day
the heavens shall be darkened, and a veil of darkness shall cover the
earth; and the heavens shall shake, and also the earth; and great tribulations shall be among the children of men, but my people will I preserve;
62 And righteousness will I send down out of heaven; and truth will I
send forth out of the earth, to bear testimony of mine Only Begotten;
his resurrection from the dead; yea, and also the resurrection of all men;
and righteousness and truth will I cause to sweep the earth as with a
flood, to gather out mine elect from the four quarters of the earth, unto
a place which I shall prepare, an Holy City, that my people may gird up
their loins, and be looking forth for the time of my coming; for there
shall be my tabernacle, and it shall be called Zion, a New Jerusalem.

Moses 7:60-62
In verse 61, the Lords speaks of this time when the heavens shall be darkened,
and a veil of darkness shall cover the earth. This gives us a reference point, one
that we should be familiar with by now. Verse 62 gives us insight into what will
happen following these events. This righteousness and truth that the Lord says
He will...cause to sweep the earth as with a flood will take the gathering of Israel to a new level. At this time the Lord says that he will gather out mine elect
from the four quarters of the earth and he will gather them unto a place which I
shall prepare, an Holy City. His purpose, he states is that my people may gird up
their loins, and be looking forth for the time of my coming. He also states for
there shall be my tabernacle, and it shall be called Zion, a New Jerusalem.
What a blessing will be manifest in the lives of those saints and others that see this
great day come. What a blessing it is to live in this great land where we may be
privileged to be among the first to benefit from the Lords millennial rule. Here in
America, while the rest of the world is in turmoil, we shall be protected as the
Lord says, in a place which I shall preparethat my people may gird up their
loins, and be looking forth for the time of my coming.
Joseph Smiths commentary on Moses 7:60-62
Now I understand by this quotation, that God clearly manifested to
Enoch the redemption which he prepared, by offering the Messiah as a
Lamb slain from before the foundation of the world; and by virtue of
the same, the glorious resurrection of the Savior, and the resurrection of
all the human family, even a resurrection of their corporeal bodies, is
brought to pass; and also righteousness and truth are to sweep the earth
as with a flood. And now, I ask, how righteousness and truth are going
to sweep the earth as with a flood? I will answer. Men and angels are to
be co-workers in bringing to pass this great work, and Zion is to be prepared, even a new Jerusalem, for the elect that are to be gathered from
the four quarters of the earth, and to be established an holy city, for the
tabernacle of the Lord shall be with them. (Joseph Smith, Discourses of
the Prophet Joseph Smith, 191.)
Apparently angels will be involved in gathering scattered Israel to the New Jerusalem, for the Prophet says above Men and angels are to be co-workers in bringing
to pass this great work. Who are these angels likely to be?
In section 77 of the Doctrine and Covenants, verse 11, the question is asked.
What are we to understand by sealing the one hundred and forty-four thousand,

Page 79

out of all the tribes of Israeltwelve thousand out of every tribe? The answer
given is. We are to understand that those who are sealed are high priests, ordained unto the holy order of God, to administer the everlasting gospel; for they
are they who are ordained out of every nation, kindred, tongue, and people, by the
angels to whom is given power over the nations of the earth, to bring as many as
will come to the church of the Firstborn.
When the Lord shall stand upon Mount Zion He will have with him a hundred
and forty-four thousand, having his Father's name written on their foreheads (D&C 133:18). These high priests are to administer the everlasting gospelto bring as many as will come to the church of the Firstborn. Such a missionary force, made up of angels will be able to go unhindered among the tumult and anarchy that will exist outside of the protection of Zion.
How is Christs millennial kingdom to be established in America?
The little stone that Daniel spoke of that was cut out of the mountain without
hands, was the restored church (kingdom) of god, established in 1830. It was to
come forth as Daniel said, in the days of these kings (kings of Europe).
Though the church itself is not the political kingdom of God, it does act as the instrument that brings the kingdom of God into existence. In the 12th chapter of
Revelation (JST) John uses the woman, child relationship to explain how and
when the kingdom of God is to come forth, he says:
1 And there appeared a great sign in heaven, in the likeness of things on
the earth; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet,
and upon her head a crown of twelve stars.
2 And the woman being with child, cried, travailing in birth, and pained
to be delivered.
3 And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a
rod of iron; and her child was caught up unto God and his throne.
4 And there appeared another sign in heaven; and behold, a great red
dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his
heads. And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did
cast them to the earth. And the dragon stood before the woman which
was delivered, ready to devour her child after it was born.
5 And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she had a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred
and threescore years.
6 And there was war in heaven; Michael and his angels fought against
the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought against Michael;
http://www.ayearwithnorainbow.com

Page 80

7 And the dragon prevailed not against Michael, neither the child, nor
the woman which was the church of God, who had been delivered of
her pains, and brought forth the kingdom of our God and his Christ.
In verse 7 we learn that the womanwas the church of God and in verse 3 we
learn that the man childwas to rule all nations with a rod of iron. So, as John
says in verse 7 the woman which was the church of God, who had been delivered
of her painsbrought forth the kingdom of our God and his Christ. Thus, the
woman is the church and the man-child is the kingdom of God, which grows out
of the church.
No man will have any peace but in Zion and her stakes
How does the transition from our present power structure to the kingdom of God
take place? It is quite simple actually, when our present government fails, the only
resemblance of order that will exist will be with the Church and priesthood of
God. Joseph Smith described it in these words:
The time is soon coming when no man will have any peace but in Zion
and her stakes.
I saw men hunting the lives of their own sons, and brother murdering
brother, women killing their own daughters, and daughters seeking the
lives of their mothers. I saw armies arrayed against armies. I saw blood,
desolation, fires. The Son of Man has said that the mother shall be a
against the daughter, and the daughter a against the mother These
things are at our doors. They will follow the Saints of God from city to
city. Satan will rage, and the spirit of the devil is now enraged. I know
not how soon these things will take place; but with a view of them,
shall I cry peace? No! I will lift up my voice and testify of them.
-Joseph Smith, Jr., Documentary History of the Church 3:391, July 2,
1839
Not only will those seeking refuge find it, but this will also be the time and circumstances under which the Elders of Israel will preserve and hold up the constitution to the rest of America and the world. Of these two elements, John Taylor
said:
We have got to establish a government upon the principle of righteousness, justice, truth and equality and not according to the many false notions that exist among men. And then the day is not far distant when
this nation will be shaken from centre to circumference. And now, you
may write it down, any of you, and I will prophesy it in the name of

God. And then will be fulfilled that prediction to be found in one of the
revelations given through the Prophet Joseph Smith. Those who will
not take up their sword to fight against their neighbor must needs flee to
Zion for safety. And they will come, saying, we do not know anything
of the principles of your religion, but we perceive that you are an honest community; you administer justice and righteousness, and we want
to live with you and receive the protection of your laws, but as for your
religion we will talk about that some other time. Will we protect such
people? Yes, all honorable men. When the people shall have torn to
shreds the Constitution of the United States the Elders of Israel will be
found holding it up to the nations of the earth and proclaiming liberty
and equal rights to all men, and extending the hand of fellowship to the
oppressed of all nations. This is part of the programme, and as long as
we do what is right and fear God, he will help us and stand by us under
all circumstances. (Journal of Discourses, 21: 8.)
Brigham Young confirms this view, he said:
When the day comes in which the Kingdom of God will bear rule, the
flag of the United States will proudly flutter unsullied on the flag staff
of liberty and equal rights, without a spot to sully its fair surface; the
glorious flag our fathers have bequeathed to us will then be unfurled to
the breeze by those who have power to hoist it aloft and defend its
sanctity.
How long will it be before the words of the prophet Joseph will be fulfilled? He said if the Constitution of the United States were saved at all
it must be done by this people. It will not be many years before these
words come to pass. (Discourses of Brigham Young, p. 360.)
What happens at this same time in the Old World?
The abomination of desolation or cleansing spoken of in earlier chapters will have
devastating consequences worldwide. However, while this revolutionary transformation is taking place in America, the rest of the world will be quite a different
picture. Returning to Daniel 7 we read:
9 I beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the Ancient of days did
sit, whose garment was white as snow, and the hair of his head like the
pure wool: his throne was like the fiery flame, and his wheels as burning fire.
10 A fiery stream issued and came forth from before him: thousand
thousands ministered unto him, and ten thousand times ten thousand

stood before him: the judgment was set, and the books were opened.
11 I beheld then because of the voice of the great words which the horn
spake: I beheld even till the beast was slain, and his body destroyed,
and given to the burning flame.
12 As concerning the rest of the beasts, they had their dominion taken
away: yet their lives were prolonged for a season and time.
We read here that certain thrones were cast down and then the Ancient of days
did sit but not all kingdoms are to be cast down at this time. As Daniel tells us
in verse 12, As concerning the rest of the beasts, they had their dominion taken
away: yet their lives were prolonged for a season and time.
These other kingdoms, designated, as the rest of the beasts by Daniel will not be
completely cast down until our Lord defeats the armies of Gog at the battle of Armageddon. At that time, as it says in Rev. 11:15 The kingdoms of this world are
become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever
and ever.
In the mean time the unstable conditions experienced in the rest of the world will
serve as a force that will contribute greatly to the gathering of Israel here in America.
Come out of her, my peoplethat ye receive not of her plagues
John also saw the burning or judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many
waters (See Rev. 17:1). This burning, which we have spoken of repeatedly, will
decimate the world and create conditions that will motivate scattered Israel to
Come out of her. In Revelations chapter 17 we read once again of the fiery demise of this great whore of our day:
15 And he saith unto me, The waters which thou sawest, where the
whore sitteth, are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues.
16 And the ten horns which thou sawest upon the beast, these shall hate
the whore, and shall make her desolate and naked, and shall eat her
flesh, and burn her with fire.
17 For God hath put in their hearts to fulfil his will, and to agree, and
give their kingdom unto the beast, until the words of God shall be fulfilled.
18 And the woman which thou sawest is that great city, which reigneth
over the kings of the earth.

lon both spiritually and temporally. This is accomplished in part by responding to

the call to gather to the American Zion. We read in Rev. chapter 18:
1 And after these things I saw another angel come down from heaven,
having great power; and the earth was lightened with his glory.
2 And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great
is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold
of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird.
3 For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication,
and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the
merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her
delicacies.
4 And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my
people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of
her plagues.
In verse 4 the Lord invites as it says my people or scattered Israel to come out of
fallen Babylon that ye receive not of her plagues. Those who respond to the call
to physically gather to America, place themselves beyond the reach the Old World
plagues of the seven angels which had the seven trumpets prepared...to sound as
enumerated in Revelation chapters 8 through 11 and elsewhere.
Not only will the cleansing of America precede this gathering of Israel to her
shores but it will also precede the return of the ten tribes. We quote Joseph Smith:
"And now I am prepared to say by the authority of Jesus Christ, that not
many years shall pass away before the United States shall present such
a scene of bloodshed as has not a parallel in the history of our nation;
pestilence, hail, famine, and earthquake will sweep the wicked of this
generation from off the face of the land, to open and prepare the way
for the return of the lost tribes of Israel from the north country." (Joseph
Smith, HC 1:315.)
This unprecedented gathering is accomplished following the burning of the great
and abominable church or cleansing of America as we have seen. In addition to
being a time of gathering, it is a preparatory time for Israel, that my people may
gird up their loins, and be looking forth for the time of my coming (Moses 7:22).
This is also the time when, as the risen Lord declared of Israel thy seed shall inherit the Gentiles and make the desolate cities to be inhabited (3 Nephi 22:3).

Page 84

Chapter 13
And the first shall be last
In the previous chapter we looked at the tremendous gathering of Israel that will
follow the demise of the great and abominable church. In this chapter we will
discuss the order or sequence of our Lords ministering. We start by reading a passage from 1 Nephi chapter 13:
42 And the time cometh that he shall manifest himself unto all nations,
both unto the Jews and also unto the Gentiles; and after he has manifested himself unto the Jews and also unto the Gentiles, then he shall
manifest himself unto the Gentiles and also unto the Jews, and the last
shall be first, and the first shall be last.
Here we have the order of the Lords ministering broken into two rounds. In the
first round He ministers to the Jews and then to the Gentiles. In the second round
He ministers to the Gentiles first and lastly to the Jews. That appears simple
enough on the surface, however there is a bit more to it.
The first round of ministering among the Jews was the Lords earthly ministry in
the meridian of time. This ministry ended shortly after the crucifixion. Interestingly, this same event, the crucifixion, marks the beginning of another ministry
among the inhabitants of the Americas. Even while these American Israelites sat
in darkness, incident to the events of the crucifixion, the Lords voice came unto
them saying:
4 O ye people of these great cities which have fallen, who are descendants of Jacob, yea, who are of the house of Israel, how oft have I gathered you as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and have
nourished you.
5 And again, how oft would I have gathered you as a hen gathereth her
chickens under her wings, yea, O ye people of the house of Israel, who

have fallen; yea, O ye people of the house of Israel, ye that dwell at Jerusalem, as ye that have fallen; yea, how oft would I have gathered you
as a hen gathereth her chickens, and ye would not.
6 O ye house of Israel whom I have spared, how oft will I gather you as
a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, if ye will repent and return unto me with full purpose of heart.
7 But if not, O house of Israel, the places of your dwellings shall become desolate until the time of the fulfilling of the covenant to your
fathers. (3 Nephi 10:4-7)
The broader scope of the Lords ministering
This event was followed with days of ministering by the risen Lord, among the
more righteous of the Nephites. It was during this time of ministering that the
Nephites were informed of the broader scope of the Lords ministry among the
house of Israel. In 3 Nephi 16:1-3 we read:
1 And verily, verily, I say unto you that I have other sheep, which are
not of this land, neither of the land of Jerusalem, neither in any parts of
that land round about whither I have been to minister.
2 For they of whom I speak are they who have not as yet heard my
voice; neither have I at any time manifested myself unto them.
3 But I have received a commandment of the Father that I shall go unto
them, and that they shall hear my voice, and shall be numbered among
my sheep, that there may be one fold and one shepherd; therefore I go
to show myself unto them.
Not only did the Lord inform the Nephites of his ministry among these other
sheep but he also made separate and specific mention of another group, even the
lost tribes of Israel. He said:
But now I go unto the Father, and also to show myself unto the lost
tribes of Israel, for they are not lost unto the Father, for he knoweth
whither he hath taken them. (3 Nephi 17:4.)
Gentiles are last in this first round of ministering
From these passages we can see how immediate the Lords post mortal ministry
was among scattered Israel. This takes us most of the way through this first round
of ministering. There is but one group left to consider, the Gentiles. However, the
Gentiles were not to receive the gospel from the Lord personally. Speaking to the
Nephites of a misunderstanding had among those at Jerusalem he said:
http://www.ayearwithnorainbow.com

A Year With No Rainbow

Page 86

22 And they understood me not, for they supposed it had been the Gentiles; for they understood not that the Gentiles should be converted
through their preaching.
23 And they understood me not that I said they shall hear my voice; and
they understood me not that the Gentiles should not at any time hear my
voicethat I should not manifest myself unto them save it were by the
Holy Ghost. (3 Nephi 15:22-23.)
The ministry among the Gentiles was of course to follow that of Israel. In the tenth
chapter of Acts, after seeing a vision, Peter comes to declare but God hath
shewed me that I should not call any man common or unclean. This is where Peter learns that the gospel is to go forth among the Gentiles. From that point on the
Gentiles were also gathered in the gospel net.
Coming to have a more comprehensive understanding of this first round of ministering is illuminating. It helps us to better anticipate what will happen when the
process is reversed.
The second round of ministering
We live in the days of the Gentiles. The second round of ministering has commenced and we sit upon a precipice. When the great and abominable church is
burned and America is cleansed, the way will have been prepared. Then we will
see an unprecedented gathering of Israel to the American Zion as explained in the
previous chapter.
This gathering was, as the Lord said to gather out mine elect from the four quarters of the earth, unto a place which I shall prepare, an Holy City, that my people
may gird up their loins, and be looking forth for the time of my coming. It is at
this time of His coming, that the Lord will appear to the Jews at the battle of
Armageddon.

Page 87

51 And then shall the Jews look upon me and say: What are these
wounds in thine hands and in thy feet?
52 Then shall they know that I am the Lord; for I will say unto them:
These wounds are the wounds with which I was wounded in the house
of my friends. I am he who was lifted up. I am Jesus that was crucified.
I am the Son of God.
53 And then shall they weep because of their iniquities; then shall they
lament because they persecuted their king. (D&C 45:48-53.)
At this time the Jews will finally accept Christ as their long awaited Messiah. The
Lord will then minister to them who shall be last and this second round of ministering will be complete.

Addendum
This book, A Year With No Rainbow, was originally published in July on 2011
with thirteen chapters. Since that time the author has discovered additional material that adds significant support to some of the original chapters. This addendum
includes the following three chapters.
Chapter 14, Orson Pratts explanation of Isaiah 18
Material is presented that supports the 42 month prophecy presented in chapters
six and ten as well as the prophecy on the rainbow presented in chapter five. All
three of these chapters (6, 10, 14) support the idea that a great calamity will befall
America and the world in the spring of the year.
Chapter 15, Orson Pratts commentary on Isaiah 18 compared to JS Matthew
This comparison between Isaiah 18 and JS Matthew show how the destruction of
the land shadowing with wings or America is a parallel prophecy to JS Matthew. Both prophecies conclude with the destruction of the gentiles and the
Lords first millennial appearance.
Chapter 16, The half hour of silence
The starting time, ending time and length of the half hour of silence are discussed.
A division of the half hour of silence is proposed and a timeline is presented.

Chapter 14
Orson Pratts Explanation of Isaiah 18
In this chapter we will compare Daniel and Johns forty two month prophecy , the
prophecy on the rainbow and Orson Pratts interpretation of Isaiah chapter 18. We
will commence with Orson Pratts statement. Here he explains what will occur in
the last days when the church is established in mountains. He says:
Any other prophecies about their going to the mountains? Yes. Read
the 18th chapter of Isaiah. Isaiah, when standing in Palestine delivering
his prophecy, looked off to the south-west and saw the rivers of Ethiopia, or Africa; and after having seen these rivers in vision he also sees a
land shadowing with wings away beyond the rivers of Ethiopia. What
kind of a land was that, away beyond the rivers of Ethiopia, from where
Isaiah stood in Palestine? Why it is a land that had the appearance of
wings. You have been struck doubtless, with the great resemblance that
North and South America have to the two great wings of a bird. While
Isaiah was thus gazing upon a land away beyond the rivers of Ethiopia,
it looked so much like the wings of a bird that he saysA land shadowing with wings, away, beyond the rivers of Ethiopia." Well, Isaiah,
what have you to say about that land? Why, says he, there is a proclamation to be had there. How extensive, Isaiah? To all people. Hear the
words of Isaiah. Says he "All ye inhabitants of the world and dwellers
on the earth, see ye when he lifts up an ensign on the mountains." Not
on the low places of that land shadowing with wings, next to the seashore, but in the mountains. What is the nature of this ensign? It is characteristic of a standard, often spoken of by the Prophets, and called by
the name of standard. Isaiah speaks of it as an ensign in a number of
places. What would naturally be a standard? The kingdom of God is a
standard to which the people rally and gather together. Does it affect all
people, Isaiah? Yes. "All ye inhabitants of the world." What could be

more extensive than that? "And dwellers on the earth, see ye when he
lifts up an ensign on the mountains, and when he bloweth a trumpet
hear ye." What else is to take place, Isaiah? He says that a severe judgment is to take place on that land shadowing with wings. What kind of
a judgment, one that is to be very severe, Isaiah? Yes, for he says
"Afore the harvest, when the bud is perfect, and the sour grape is ripening in the flower, he shall both cut off the sprigs with pruning hooks,
and take away and cut own the branches. They shall be left together
unto the fowls of the mountains and to the beasts of the earth; and the
fowls shall summer upon them, and all the beasts of the earth shall winter upon them." When will this be, Isaiah? After this proclamation, after
all the nations of the world have heard it, after the people have heard
the sound of the warning message; then the first among all the nations
where the extremities of the image have sent forth one of its governments, there will be the commencement of a most terrible judgment, so
much so that the people on that land will not have time to bury their
dead, and the fowls shall summer upon them. Why is all this? Because
they will not hearken when that sound goes to all people; they will not
repent of their sins; they will not receive the message that God has sent
by his angel, he therefore visits them first, because they are the first to
hear those glad tidings. No wonder, then, that Zion, that brings good
tidings, was commanded by the ancient Prophet to get up into the high
mountain.
Let us go a little further, and see what immediately follows this. Isaiah
says"For behold the Lord God shall come with a strong hand." What!
The coming of the Lord going to take place after Zion has gone up into
the mountains? Yes, that is one of the great events that will transpire,
when the people of the nations are careless and indifferent, when they
are eating and drinking, buying and selling, and their minds wholly
swallowed up with the various occupations of life. "Behold, the Lord
comes with a strong hand, his arm will rule for him and he will reward
his people; then the glory of the Lord will be revealed and all flesh will
see it together." (Journal of Discourses, 26 vols. [London: Latter-day
Saints' Book Depot, 1854-1886], 18: 183.)
Above we have the words of Orson Pratt describing and interpreting Isaiahs vision, in which he saw the demise of America. An event that has consequences for
all the world. Elder Pratt writes Does it affect all people, Isaiah? Yes. "All ye inhabitants of the world." This is a sweeping view of events that will soon transpire,
interpreted by a modern day prophet.

Elder Pratt explains that the gospel message is to go forth to all the world from
America, he says:
there is a proclamation to be had there. How extensive, Isaiah? To all
people. Hear the words of Isaiah. Says he "All ye inhabitants of the
world and dwellers on the earth, see ye when he lifts up an ensign on
the mountains."
As Orson Pratt explains, when this proclamation (the gospel) is rejected by the
peoples of the nations a severe judgment is to take place on that land shadowing
with wings. What do we learn from Elder Pratts interpretation of Isaiah 18 ?
What parallels can be drawn?
1- This great destruction of America commences in the spring of the year for
Isaiah says Afore the harvest, when the bud is perfect, and the sour grape is ripening in the flower, he shall both cut off the sprigs with pruning hooks, and take
away and cut own the branches. So sudden and so swift shall the events be that
They shall be left together unto the fowls of the mountains and to the beasts of
the earth; and the fowls shall summer upon them.
2- This prophecy is a parallel to the prophecy of Daniel and Johns prophecy
where America is given to the burning flame. After all, how many times can
America be destroyed? The destructive events of this prophecy commence in the
spring. This is consistent with the 42 month count down which also concludes in
the spring.
3- This prophecy is consistent with and somewhat reminiscent of the prophecy on
the rainbow. In the prophecy on the rainbow we have:
But in the year when the bow was not to be seen would commence
desolation, calamity, and distress among the nations, without seed time
or harvest. (Kent P. Jackson, Joseph Smith's Commentary on the Bible,
p.112.)
In Isaiahs prophecy we read:
"Afore the harvest, when the bud is perfect, and the sour grape is ripening in the flower, he shall both cut off the sprigs with pruning hooks,
and take away and cut own the branches.
Both prophecies make reference to spring time or seed time and the harvest.
Also, both prophecies point to spring time for the commencement of these events.

Page 91

4- Orson Pratt also gives us the setting for these events. He characterizes it as a
time when the people of the nations are careless and indifferent, when they are
eating and drinking, buying and selling, and their minds wholly swallowed up
with the various occupations of life.
This sounds very much like JS Matthew, doesnt it? We read:
41 But as it was in the days of Noah, so it shall be also at the coming of
the Son of Man;
42 For it shall be with them, as it was in the days which were before the
flood; for until the day that Noah entered into the ark they were eating
and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage; (JS Matthew)
5- America is the first nation to fall to the Lords millennial kingdom. Elder Pratt
explains: Because they will not hearken when that sound goes to all people; they
will not repent of their sins; they will not receive the message that God has sent by
his angel, he therefore visits them first, because they are the first to hear those glad
tidings.
This leads us to the final point.
6- Both the prophecy on the rainbow and Daniel and Johns prophecy of the 42
months lead up to the Lords appearance. What does Orson Pratt say about the
Lords coming as described by Isaiah? He says:
Let us go a little further, and see what immediately follows this. Isaiah
says"For behold the Lord God shall come with a strong hand." What!
The coming of the Lord going to take place after Zion has gone up into
the mountains? Yes, that is one of the great events that will transpire"Behold, the Lord comes with a strong hand, his arm will rule
for him and he will reward his people; then the glory of the Lord will be
revealed and all flesh will see it together."
Conclusion: It is striking how seamlessly these three prophecies fit together. They
give us a very comprehensive picture of the order and timing of these events and
what the conditions will be like when these prophecies come to pass.

Chapter 15
Orson Pratts Commentary on Isaiah 18 Compared to JS Matthew
In the previous chapter we compared Daniel and Johns forty two month prophecy , the prophecy on the rainbow and Orson Pratts interpretation of Isaiah chapter 18. In this chapter we will take a much closer look at how Orson Pratts comments on Isaiah 18 compare to JS Matthew. Isaiah 18 and JS Matthew are parallel
prophecies. It is hoped that the reader will come to understand JS Matthew from a
completely different perspective.
Destruction followed by the Lords appearance
The first parallel we will consider relates to the sequence of destruction, followed
by the Lords appearance. In Orson Pratts commentary he points out that a severe judgment is to take place on that land shadowing with wings. In the next
paragraph Elder Pratt says Let us go a little further, and see what immediately
follows this. Isaiah says"For behold the Lord God shall come with a strong
hand." What! The coming of the Lord going to take place after Zion has gone up
into the mountains? Yes, that is one of the great events that will transpire.
This same sequence is give in JS Matthew. Regarding the abomination of desolation the Lord says:
32 And again shall the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel
the prophet, be fulfilled.
33 And immediately after the tribulation of those days, the sun shall be
darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall
from heaven, and the powers of heaven shall be shaken
36 And, as I said before, after the tribulation of those days, and the
powers of the heavens shall be shaken, then shall appear the sign of the
Son of Man in heaven, and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn;

and they shall see the Son of Man coming in the clouds of heaven, with
power and great glory;
Eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage
The second parallel we consider has to do with the conditions that will exist at the
time of this great destruction. In Orson Pratts comments he says Yes, that is one
of the great events that will transpire, when the people of the nations are careless
and indifferent, when they are eating and drinking, buying and selling, and their
minds wholly swallowed up with the various occupations of life. This same set of
circumstances is described by the Lord in JS Matthew in these words:
41 But as it was in the days of Noah, so it shall be also at the coming of
the Son of Man;
42 For it shall be with them, as it was in the days which were before the
flood; for until the day that Noah entered into the ark they were eating
and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage;
43 And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall
also the coming of the Son of Man be
The Lord appears immediately after the destruction
In our third parallel we find that in both instances the Lords appearance occurs
immediately after the destruction. Orson Pratt says Let us go a little further,
and see what immediately follows this. Isaiah says"For behold the Lord God
shall come with a strong hand." What! The coming of the Lord going to take place
after Zion has gone up into the mountains? Yes, that is one of the great events that
will transpire. In JS Matthew we read:
32 And again shall the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel
the prophet, be fulfilled.
33 And immediately after the tribulation of those days, the sun shall be
darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall
from heaven, and the powers of heaven shall be shaken
36 And, as I said before, after the tribulation of those days, and the
powers of the heavens shall be shaken, then shall appear the sign of the
Son of Man in heaven, and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn;
and they shall see the Son of Man coming in the clouds of heaven, with
power and great glory;
They shall be cut off from among the people

Page 94

Our forth parallel. Speaking of a land shadowing with wings (America) and its
people, Isaiah says that they shall be cut off.
We find the same action being applied to the Gentiles in JS Matthew and 3
Nephi 21. From JS Matthew we read:
55 And thus cometh the end of the wicked, according to the prophecy
of Moses, saying: They shall be cut off from among the people;
This verse was appended to the end of the chapter by Joseph Smith, he is simply
applying what the Book of Mormon tells us about the Gentiles to the 24th chapter
of Matthew. He uses this Book of Mormon doctrine and language to summarize
the entire chapter. And thus cometh the end of the wicked, according to the
prophecy of Moses, saying: They shall be cut off from among the people
In 3 Nephi 21 we see the parallel again, we read:
11 Therefore it shall come to pass that whosoever will not believe in
my words, who am Jesus Christ, which the Father shall cause him to
bring forth unto the Gentiles, and shall give unto him power that he
shall bring them forth unto the Gentiles, (it shall be done even as Moses
said) they shall be cut off from among my people who are of the covenant.
Orson Pratt confirms the prophecy that America would be cut off according to
the words of Moses. He said:
Let me here prophesy on the strength of the revelations that were
given through the Prophet Joseph, and through all the ancient Prophets,
that the time will come when the Lord our God will so manifest His
power that every soul upon the face of this great Western Continent that
will not believe the Book of Mormon, that will not repent of his sins,
that will not turn away from his iniquities, and that will not hearken to
the voice of His Son, that it will be with such a one as Moses said, he
shall be cut off from among the people. Do you believe it? It will be the
case. (Journal of Discourses, Volume 22, Oct. 10, 1880)
But the end of the earth is not yet, but by and by
Interestingly, in JS Matthew 55 we are also told but the end of the earth is not
yet, but by and by. Why is this so? It is simply because of the timing of the
events spoken of. Because these events in JS Matthew speak of the abomination

Page 95

of desolation upon the Gentiles and lead up to the Lords appearance at AdamOndi-Ahman, they happen rather early on in the sequence of appearances that constitute the Second Coming. The sequence being, Adam-Ondi-Ahman, New Jerusalem, Old Jerusalem and the Lords coming in his glory. Thus, the end of the earth
is not yet, but by and by.
The abomination of desolation of JS Matthew applies to the Gentiles
Ezra Taft Benson was exactly right when he said:
(Oct. general conference, 1961)
Americas role in establishing our Lords millennial kingdom
This destruction upon the land shadowing with wings (America) followed by
the Lords first millennial appearance at Adam-Ondi-Ahman is in accord with a
divine plan. Orson Pratt gives us one reason as to why America will be the first to
be visited with destruction. He says:
Because they will not hearken when that sound goes to all people; they
will not repent of their sins; they will not receive the message that God
has sent by his angel, he therefore visits them first, because they are the
first to hear those glad tidings.
Additionally, America plays a most important part in the establishment of the

Lords millennial kingdom. It is in America that the Lord will first appear. It is in
America that the New Jerusalem shall be built. It is to America that Israel shall be
gathered. It is to America that the ten tribes shall return. As the Lord says in
Moses 7:62:
and righteousness and truth will I cause to sweep the earth as with a
flood, to gather out mine elect from the four quarters of the earth, unto
a place which I shall prepare, an Holy City, that my people may gird up
their loins, and be looking forth for the time of my coming; for there
shall be my tabernacle, and it shall be called Zion, a New Jerusalem.
The parallels and differences between JS Matthew and D&C 45.
Though there are many parallels between these two sources, there is one grand and
paramount difference. Simply put, it is this. JS Matthew gives us a description of
the events leading up to the Second Coming which conclude with the destruction
of the Gentiles and the Lords first appearance when he comes as a thief in the
night to Adam-Ondi-Ahman. The evidences supporting this view have been
stated above.
On the other hand, D&C 45 concludes with the Lords appearance to the Jews at
the Battle of Armageddon. Of this there can be no doubt. Understanding how JS
Matthew and D&C 45 differ is a grand key and leads to a correct interpretation of
events soon to occur.
Two shall be in the field, the one shall be taken, and the other left
In this chapter, it has been proposed that JS Matthew has to do with the abomination of desolation being poured out upon the Gentiles and the Lords first millennial appearance at Adam-Ondi-Ahman. Before closing this chapter we shall address a passage that at first glance would appear to disagree with this interpretation. In JS Matt: 44-45 we read:
44 Then shall be fulfilled that which is written, that in the last days, two
shall be in the field, the one shall be taken, and the other left;
45 Two shall be grinding at the mill, the one shall be taken, and the
other left;
This is an often misunderstood passage and understandably so. The thought conveyed here is so close the to D&C 88:96, And the saints that are upon the earth,
who are alive, shall be quickened and be caught up to meet him that it is easy to
get the wrong idea. In the 17th chapter of JST Luke, we find a clarification of the
2011, Frank M. Keele. All rights reserved.

A Year With No Rainbow

Page 97

Lords true meaning. We read:

JST Luke 17:34-37
34 I tell you, in that night there shall be two in one bed; the one shall be taken, and
the other shall be left. Two shall be grinding together; the one shall be taken, and
the other left.
35 Two shall be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left.
36 And they answered and said unto him, Where, Lord, shall they be taken?
37 And he said unto them, Wheresoever the body is gathered; or, in other words,
whithersoever the saints are gathered, thither will the eagles be gathered together;
or, thither will the remainder be gathered together.
38 This he spake, signifying the gathering of his saints; and of angels descending
and gathering the remainder unto them; the one from the bed, the other from the
grinding, and the other from the field, whithersoever he listeth.
This interpretation from the JST makes it perfectly clear that JS Matt:44-45 has
reference to be gathered to whithersoever the saints are gathered rather then being quickened and be caught up to meet him when he comes in his glory.

Chapter 16
The Half Hour of Silence
There is a great variance of opinion as to what the half hour of silence is, how long
it is and just when it occurs. The most difficult question to answer is what it is.
That is a question we shall not attempt to answer since we have no scriptural or
prophetic statements to guide us. Making an incorrect assumption or guess could
lead us further astray than just admitting that we dont have any sure answers.
We have only two scriptural sources to guide us in our understanding of the half
hour of silence. They are, Revelation 8:1 and D&C 88:95. The good news is that
these two passages do help us answer three critical questions.
1- When does it start?
2- When does it end?
3- How long is it?
When does it start?
We get the answer to our first question in Rev. 8:1:
1 And when he had opened the seventh seal, there was silence in
heaven about the space of half an hour.
If the millennium or seventh thousand years begins with the Lords appearance at
Adam-Ondi-Ahman as we have proposed then we can use Adam-Ondi-Ahmn as
the starting point of the half hour of silence.
When does it end?
For the answer to our second question, when does it end? We go to D&C 88:95 2011, Frank M. Keele. All rights reserved.

A Year With No Rainbow

Page 99

98:
95 And there shall be silence in heaven for the space of half an hour;
and immediately after shall the curtain of heaven be unfolded, as a
scroll is unfolded after it is rolled up, and the face of the Lord shall be
unveiled;
96 And the saints that are upon the earth, who are alive, shall be quickened and be caught up to meet him.
97 And they who have slept in their graves shall come forth, for their
graves shall be opened; and they also shall be caught up to meet him in
the midst of the pillar of heaven
98 They are Christ's, the first fruits, they who shall descend with him
first, and they who are on the earth and in their graves, who are first
caught up to meet him; and all this by the voice of the sounding of the
trump of the angel of God.
In these verses we find out what happens immediately after the half hour silence. It is what we would call the Lords coming in his glory. This is his fourth
appearance as we have charted it in other chapters. In this passage we learn that
immediately following the half hour silence:
1- the curtain of heaven be unfolded, as a scroll is unfolded after it is rolled up
2- the face of the Lord shall be unveiled
3- the saints that are upon the earth, who are alive, shall be quickened and be
caught up to meet him
4- they who have slept in their graves shall come forth, for their graves shall be
opened
Obviously, the half hour silence ends when the Lord comes in his glory.
How long is the half hour of silence?
Now to answer the third question. How long is the half hour of silence? Since the
half hour of silence spans the period of time from the Lords first millennial appearance at Adam-Ondi-Ahman to his final appearance when he come in his
glory, it cannot be a mere thirty minutes of earth time. This conclusion is consistent with what we are told in the two passages quoted above. In both cases we are
told that this silence is in heaven and therefore according to the Lords time. Of
the half hour silence, Elder Bruce R. McConkie has said:
If it is to be reckoned on the basis of "the Lord's time" of 1000 years to
a day, the duration would be some 21 of our years. (Doctrinal New

Testament Commentary, 3 vols., 3: 499.)

So we could chart it like this:
Adam-Ondi-Ahman
The New Jerusalem
To the Jews
In his glory
| 21 Years |
How is the half hour of silence divided up?
Now lets look at an event that may tell us even more about this 21 years. In Ezekiel chapter 39 we are told that after the battle of Armageddon the Jews will spend
seven months burying their dead and seven years burning leftover fuel. We read:
1 Therefore, thou son of man, prophesy against Gog, and say, Thus
saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince
of Meshech and Tubal:
2 And I will turn thee back, and leave but the sixth part of thee, and will
cause thee to come up from the north parts, and will bring thee upon the
mountains of Israel:
3 And I will smite thy bow out of thy left hand, and will cause thine
arrows to fall out of thy right hand.
4 Thou shalt fall upon the mountains of Israel, thou, and all thy bands,
and the people that is with thee: I will give thee unto the ravenous birds
of every sort, and to the beasts of the field to be devoured.
5 Thou shalt fall upon the open field: for I have spoken it, saith the
Lord GOD.
6 And I will send a fire on Magog, and among them that dwell carelessly in the isles: and they shall know that I am the LORD.
7 So will I make my holy name known in the midst of my people Israel;
and I will not let them pollute my holy name any more: and the heathen
shall know that I am the LORD, the Holy One in Israel.
8 Behold, it is come, and it is done, saith the Lord GOD; this is the
day whereof I have spoken.
9 And they that dwell in the cities of Israel shall go forth, and shall set
on fire and burn the weapons, both the shields and the bucklers, the
bows and the arrows, and the handstaves, and the spears, and they shall
burn them with fire seven years:
10 So that they shall take no wood out of the field, neither cut down
any out of the forests; for they shall burn the weapons with fire: and
they shall spoil those that spoiled them, and rob those that robbed them,
saith the Lord GOD.
11 And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will give unto Gog a

place there of graves in Israel, the valley of the passengers on the east
of the sea: and it shall stop the noses of the passengers: and there shall
they bury Gog and all his multitude: and they shall call it The valley of
Hamon-gog.
12 And seven months shall the house of Israel be burying of them, that
they may cleanse the land.
This certainly doesnt sound like seven years of terrestrial living does it? We also
know that after the Lord comes to the Jews at the battle of Armageddon, the gospel will be dispensed to the heathen nations and that will take some time as well.
So were going to propose that the Lord wont come in his glory until after this
time is fulfilled. Adding this information to our chart, it now looks like this:
Adam-Ondi-Ahman
The New Jerusalem
To the Jews
In his glory
|| 7 Years |
| 21 Years |
Now, we have the 21 years divided into two segments, one fourteen years long
and one seven years long. If we want our chart to be complete, we are going to
have to come up with one more number. There appears to be an obvious choice
here, the number 7. Can we come up with any good reason for using the number 7,
other than the fact that it makes our chart symmetrical and that 21 is divisible by
7?
There may not be any scriptural justification like we had for the last 7 years but
keep in mind that we get the 21 year concept from the book of Revelation, a book
of 7s. John gives us a book with seven seals, seven angels, seven vials, seven
heads, seven mountains, seven plagues, seven kings, seven days, seven trumpets,
seven horns, seven eyes, seven spirits, seven thunders, seven golden candlesticks,
seven stars, seven Spirits of God, seven lumps of fire burning etc. The number 7
also represents wholeness, completeness and perfection. There doesnt appear to
be another number as prominent or as likely to be correct, so we use 7 to complete
our chart.
The half hour silence is actually a transition period. During this time the kingdoms
of this world will be transformed into the kingdom or our Lord, starting with
America. Once all kingdoms have come under his rule and the covenants made
with mortal man are complete, the Lord will transform the earth and its inhabitants into a terrestrial condition. We read of this transition in D&D 77:12:
We are to understand that as God made the world in six days, and on the seventh
day he finished his work, and sanctified it, and also formed man out of the dust of

the earth, even so, in the beginning of the seventh thousand years will the Lord
God sanctify the earth, and complete the salvation of man, and judge all things,
and shall redeem all things, except that which he hath not put into his power, when
he shall have sealed all things, unto the end of all things; and the sounding of the
trumpets of the seven angels are the preparing and finishing of his work, in the
beginning of the seventh thousand yearsthe preparing of the way before the time
of his coming.

Addendum
It is mid November (2012) as I write these words. We have just passed through
another presidential election cycle and Mr. Obama has prevailed. He is to serve a
second term, something that I had not considered previous to last spring, who
knew?
I have pondered much, as to how these most recent developments might relate to
Daniel and Johns prophecy of the 42 months and have determined to share my
thoughts here, as an addendum to this book.
It is quite obvious at this point that the 42-month count down did not start in the
fall of 2008. That is now water under the bridge. However, I am unable to shake
the feeling that this president will go on to fulfill Daniels prophecy.
Daniels vision of events that lead to the Lords first millennial appearance,
here in America!
We know that Daniels prophecy portrays events that occur in America. Daniel
tells us: And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom,
which shall never be destroyed. That latter day kingdom was established here in
America. He further states: I beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the Ancient of days did sit, again, an event that will take place in America.
Daniel tells us of a fourth beast (Roman Empire) with ten horns (Nations of
Europe) and that from among these ten hornsthere came upanother little
horn or a new nation. It was America that sprang from the nations of Europe and
it was America that would go on to subdue three kings (England, France and
Spain) in order to become an independent nation.
An attack on the constitution.
Daniels telling words, prophecy of conditions and events here in America, just
prior to the Lords Second Coming. Of the little horn, Daniel says: And he
shall speak great wordsand think to change times and laws.
What is our president known for if it isnt speaking great words? What is the
mantra of the president and the progressive movement? In a word, change! And
what do they want to change most? The law upon which this nation was founded,
they want to do away with our constitutional form of government because it would

Page 105

limit their power. We see our freedoms being infringed upon almost every day.
Czars are appointed, travelers are restricted and subject to ludicrous invasions of
personal privacy. Businesses and industries are regulated out of existence or taken
over by the government. Religious freedom is under attack. Our bill of rights has
been abridged, and our personal liberties continue to dwindle at an ever-increasing
pace. Our pleadings for a return to our founding principles, are ignored by those in
power. Yes, Daniel saw our day and used some pretty apt words to describe it!
Our constitution has been under attack for many decades but under the current administration the changes are breathtaking. Were looking less and less like a republic and more and more like and oligarchy every day.
Consider Jacobs words as he quotes the Lord in second Nephi, chapter ten:
11 And this land shall be a land of liberty unto the Gentiles, and there shall be no
kings upon the land, who shall raise up unto the Gentiles
14 For he that raiseth up a king against me shall perish, for I, the Lord, the king of
heaven, will be their king, and I will be a light unto them forever, that hear my
words.
The Lord foresaw that some among the Gentiles would seek to destroy liberty,
trample the constitution and attempt to set up an oligarchy. He also said, he that
raiseth up a king against me shall perish. So we have the Lords word for it that
the king men, oligarchs, call them what you may, will not succeed. They shall
perish! And then the Lord tells us what will follow, I, the Lord, the king of
heaven, will be their king. We have essentially the same narrative here in second
Nephi that we get form Daniel. That is, when powers that be (little horn, king
men, etc.) attempt to overthrow the constitutional law of the land, the Lord will
throw them down and commence to establishment of his own millennial kingdom.
Ezra Taft Benson described this same situation in these terms, if the
gentiles on this land reject the word of God and conspire to overthrow liberty and
the Constitution, then their doom is fixed, and they ". . . shall be cut off from
among my people who are of the covenant"The Lord has declared that before
the second coming of Christ it will be necessary to ". . . destroy the secret works of
darkness, . . ." in order to preserve the land of Zionthe Americas. (2 Nephi
10:11-16.)
Given the tenuous nature of our present situation, its hard to see how the destruction of the little horn, (Perishing of the king men in Book of Mormon terms)
followed by the Lords appearance at Adam-Ondi-Ahman can be far off. After all,
the Lord is bound by his word and he has said, there shall be no kings upon the

land, who shall raise up unto the Gentiles.

Are we in the 42-month countdown?
Now for the most important question, are we in the 42 month countdown? Well,
that depends. If Mr. Obama is the fulfillment of Daniels prophecy and if we could
count on constitutional term limits applying, then it follows that we are. On the
other hand, if the oligarchs were to ignore the constitution and push for a third
term or something to that effect, we could be four or more years away. Time will
tell.
One thing is certain. Gods word cannot be void, so we will most certainly see
Daniels prophecy of the 42 months fulfilled before Christ comes. This prophecy
is one of the best and most precise indicators of the Second Coming that we have
in all of scripture. As such, it behooves us to understand Daniels prophecy, keep
our eyes and our hearts open, and make sure that we have oil in our lamps.
