Purpose and Background

All professionals including engineers require
continuous updating of knowledge, state of the art
skills and improvement in professional competency
and exposure. Pakistan Engineering Council with its
objective of introducing and ensuring Continuing
Professional Development amongst its growing
community of professional engineers, regularly
conducts short courses in addition to many other
academic and professional activities.
This course is designed to introduce and train the
Engineers about the current coal combustion
technologies to combat the present scenario of
energy shortage in the country. The course contents
will include introduction to Clean Coal Combustion
Technologies, Emission Reduction and Circulating
Fluidized Bed Combustors design, operation and
maintenance.

Profile of Resource Persons:

Prof. Dr. Ahmad Hussain has done B.E Mechanical
Engineering from NEDUET, Karachi. MS in Power Plant
Engineering from PIEAS and Ph.D in Thermofluids from
University Technology Malaysia. He has 25 years of
experience of working at various technical and
managerial posts in National and International
Organizations..The title of his Ph.D thesis is
Hydrodynamic and Thermo gravimetric Studies of Palm
Shell Waste and Coal Blends in a Circulating Fluidized
Bed Riser. He had designed and fabricated an number of
test rigs and did a number of experiments on that rig for
low grade coal combustion and gasification. Dr. Ahmad
had also done CFD modelling using ANSYS FLUENT
software for combustion of coal and solid waste. His
work is focused on utilization of fluidized technology for
combustion of biomass waste and low grade coals for
energy production. This is also a good area for utilization
of renewable sources like biomass wastes for power
generation.Worked as consultant for NFC Institute of
Engineering & Technology, Multan as Coal Consultant for
their 20 Million Rupees project on establishing the Coal
Research Lab and demonstrating the combustion and
gasification of Pakistani coals. I worked as consultant
from 2008-2010. During my consultation, a state of the
art fully functional Coal Research Lab was developed. In
addition to that I designed and fabricated the first
circulating fluidized bed combustion test rig. On that test
rig, combustion of a number of Pakistani coals has been
performed. Recently the rig has been used to evaluate
the Combustion Performance of Low Grade Duki Coal
from Balochistan. The work was presented at UKPakistan Coal Conference organized by University of
Leeds, UK. This experience is very useful in burning
Thar coal once it is available in sufficient quantity. A
number of local and international publications weremade
to highlight the potential of utilization of coal in Pakistan.
