Around Hicksville

Hix Friends and former studentsTime to gauge interest.

Thinking about another tee shirt sale ...benefit of the Terry Farrell Fire Fighters Fund hereafter referred
to as the TFFFF. As some of you know, over the last two years, the sale has raised over $8000 for the
Fund. There are other styles and garments, no thongs though, as much as Mark Robinson has begged for
them. Ladies cuts and hoodies and also the option of the "Hick Guy" logo. If there is enough interest
evidenced by people "liking" this post I will start convincing Wendy that having a couple hundred tee
shirts strewn around the living room is a good idea for a good causeWalter Relling 1977

I grew up in Hicksville , NY. We lived on a street during a time when everyone

treated each other like Family. We went outside first thing in the morning to play, we got dirty and didn't
go home until suppertime and you better not be late. We ate whatever my Mother cooked. There were no
questions or negotiations. We looked forward to the ice cream man. We played "Spud", " "Red Light,
Green Light", "Hide and Seek" "tag", baseball", "red rover" "football" "Stoop ball" and "Manhunt".
There were no bottled waters, we drank from the water hose. We played in sprinklers, walked or rode
our bikes to the neighborhood field and the village for pizza, or anywhere else. If you wanted to get a
hold of your friends, you called them from a landline or pay phone, or went to their house and knocked
on the door. "Play Dates" didn't exist. We weren't afraid of anything. If you fell down you'd better suck it
up 'cause you couldn't run in and out of the house for a scratch or any other reason or you would have to
stay in. If someone had a fight, that's what it was.... A fight that started and ended right there. The next
day it was over. At night we caught lightning bugs and when the street lights came on we were reminded
to get our butts home before our Mom or Dad had to holler for us to come in for the night. School was
mandatory. We watched our mouths around our elders because we knew If you DISRESPECTED any
grown up you were gonna get corrected BIG TIME! I wouldn't change a thing. Re-post with your
block if you're proud that you came from a close knit community and will never forget where you
came from! I lived on Ohio StreetSandy Brindisi 1966

John Hattenback (1956) mentioned a piano player Buzzy

Moore who played at Jabby's in Hicksville. Buzzy was my father and lived in Amityville. I can't
remember him driving anything but a Cadillac convertible throughout his life. Thought I would share
some Buzzy photos. He played the xylophone, saxophone, guitar, ukulele, flute, clarinet, drums and the
piano. His love was the piano which he played from 4 years of age until he passed away in the 80s

listed with an email (email address deleted for privacy) If you want to use only one email address, let us
know so our records can be adjusted. I'm assuming you are married and would like to know your maiden

Hi BobI am the Hicksville alumnus of 1969. Several days ago I awoke inspired to research the
potential of my 50th reunion being planned, and discovered HixReunion.com, and HixNews.com. While
surfing your site I came across People Looking for People, and noticed that a past alumnus familiar to
me was attempting to make contact with my ex-sister-in-law (sister of my ex-wife). That ex-sister-inlaw, Carol Catanese, had succumbed to cancer last June (my ex-wife is Barbara Catanese 1971). So, I
initiated the attempt to add a comment about her death, and then enroll in your web site. I use Windows
10, and have set up accounts for both myself and my new bride, Diane, who grew up in Schenectady,
NY. She uses Gmail as her email server. I use Outlook. During both requests to HixNews your
application defaulted to Dianes Gmail account with no ability to modify that error. I have no idea why.
Diane uses Firefox to access mail, and I use MSOffice Outlook (though I do have the Webmail site
opened on Firefox for back-up). So, yes I would like to enroll with my email address: (email address
deleted for privacy). My birthday is December 17, 1950. Thanks!...Gene Timpano 1969

Flashback
My mom. Her name was Dorothy, Dotty, Dot. She had blonde hair and brown eyes with gold flecks in
them. She had a beautiful singing voice. She liked to dance. She taught me how to do the Lindy (she
always led) and how to walk with good posture (she put a book on my head). She loved to tap dance. We
used to play craps on the kitchen floor, throwing the dice against the wall C'mon 7 or 11! Momma
needs a new pair of shoes! She wrote awesome poetry "I was sitting in the garden, it was nearing
eventide, when I saw a flimsy bubble, and I thought Id hop a ride". She cried at church, especially when
Mr. Gaggin sang Oh Holy Night. She cried when she listened to opera too (her favorite was Madame
Butterfly). She wasnt a particularly good cook (tuna fish and Spanish rice?) but she made awesome pot
roast with buttery noodles and bread crumbs. And her SOS butter cookies at Christmas were to die for.
She was a really good typist in her day. She taught me how to type using a piece of cardboard with the
keyboard drawn on it. She was good at spelling and vocabulary, and always scored 100 on It Pays to
Increase your Word Power in the Readers Digest. On the rare occasion when she and Dad went to the

movies, she bought a box of Jordan Almonds, and saved some for us. When Dad gave her the big red
satin Valentines heart filled with candy, she always shared. She was religious, but rarely went to church.
When the Jehovahs Witnesses came around, she would invite them in to talk about the Bible. She loved
people and taught us how to be nice if you have nothing nice to say, dont say anything at all. She had
a great laugh. She could run REALLY fast and hurdle fences (which was scary when we were
misbehaving). She loved dogs. She especially loved babies, and could always calm them down. She
loved my Dad. She loved us. She died of a heart attack 39 years ago today. I still miss herJanine Way

In The News

I'm not the most emotional person in the Hirsch household. However, today
is different. Having grown up in Nassau I didn't know what to make of Commack when we moved
into Country Woods about 30 years ago. People around here couldn't even agree on how to pronounce
the hamlets name!
Oh what a place it's turned out to be! If you have children, you want them to grow up here!! From the
moment our son and daughter entered school here they were embraced by teachers, coaches, and
administrators who cared...really cared. We instantly became part of a community of parents who
cared about each other's children.
What a ride we've had. What an education our kids received. With a daughter, now an RN and a son a
surgeon, we make room for the next generation at 31 Fleetwood. The list is much too long but special
thanks to Mary Jo Masciello for what she does for our children. To the Curley's for being special
neighbors and their daughters for being our kids first babysitters and early role models. To the
Masciello, Pfaeffle, O'Conner, Karch, Ragusin, Gironda, Hoenigman, Davis, families to name just a
few, your friendship has made this journey so special. We wish you all great health and happiness.

Dear HixNews

Seth Carlin was one of my best friends in Junior and Senior High School at Hicksville. We both
studied piano with Morton Estrin, Seth with much more success. We both went off to Harvard together
after graduation from HHS, and then Seth went to France to study piano, and then to Julliard. He and his
wife Maryse would go to France for the summers.
In Early August I learned that Seth had died in France. He had died on July 28th after being in a coma
and on life support since the previous Saturday from a swimming accident.
Seth was sweet and kind, and a good friend all these years. We would get together frequently, whenever
he came to the SF Bay area.
Seth was a musician, performer, teacher, mentor, and friend, husband, and father. He was a Mozart
expert, playing Mozart on one of those old wooden-framed Forte Pianos of Mozarts time that he would
have to tune and slightly detune himself before every concert. He could make Mozart sing romantically
like no one else.
I watched him play cadenzas, different cadenzas each time, just to keep the conductor on his toes,
guessing when he should bring the orchestra back in. Seth had a great sense of humor.
Seth and his ready laugh will be sorely missed. Ill post memorial arrangements and any formal obituary
here when I obtain the information.

Kim Allen 1962

Obituary for Seth Carlinan internationally renowned pianist who taught at Washington
University in St. Louis for 37 years, died Thursday, July 28, 2016, following a swimming accident in
France. He was 71.
A prize winner at the International Busoni Competition in Bolzano, Italy, Carlin earned rave reviews for
his performance on both the modern piano and its 18th-century predecessor, the fortepiano. The New
York Times praised his interpretations of Mozart as sparklingly transparent while his performance of
the complete cycle of Schubert fortepiano sonatas was broadcast nationally by National Public Radio.
Seth has been for many years the public face of the music department, said Todd Decker, chair of
music in Arts & Sciences. His regular solo recitals and concert collaborations with top musicians in the
region, many from the St. Louis Symphony, brought enthusiastic audiences for classical music to
campus. Seths versatility as a keyboardist his equal comfort playing historical and modern pianos
made Washington University a special place for piano and chamber music.
The joy he found in making music and collaborating with others, whether other professionals or his
own accomplished students, was evident in every performance, Decker added. As a teacher and
colleague, Seth was unfailingly kind and generous to others. His musicianship and friendship will be
deeply missed.
A native of East Orange, N.J., Carlin began playing piano at age 6 and made his public debut three years
later on New York public radio station WNYC. As a Harvard undergraduate, Carlin initially majored in
physics but took a three-year leave to study at the Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris. There, he worked
with pianist Jules Gentil, won a scholarship from the French government, earned his Licence de Concert
and met his future wife, fellow pianist Maryse Carlin.
Returning to Harvard, Carlin switched his major to music, graduating in 1969. The following year he
earned a masters in piano from The Juilliard School, then taught at Hiram College in Ohio and Phillips
Exeter Academy in New Hampshire before joining Washington University as director of the piano
program in 1979.
Carlin is survived by Maryse and by their two children, Tova of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Daniel (AB 04) of
Berkeley, Calif.; as well as by his brother, Elliot, and sister-in-law, Marianne Carlin of Brooklyn;
stepmother Mariann Carlin, of Walnut Creek, Calif.; stepsisters Sue Oliker of Danville, Calif., and
Andrea Szentirmai, of Walnut Creek; and by a large extended family.

(2) individuals; Linda DeJohn and Lorraine Turrisi. To date, I have received a response regarding only
one (1) of the named individuals. As such, since it has been quite a while the names have been on the

list. Thanks so much and enjoy the rest of your summerJean Pius-Mucchiari 1965

Linda and Lorraine are also being looked for by other people, so those inquiries will remain active.
Would you care to share the information you have received so I can pass it along to the other interested
party?

was shared to me in confidence. I hope you understand. Thanking you againJean

"American Pie" was the name of the plane that Buddy Holly went down in.
*I have listened to the words to American Pie for many years and I thought I understood
everything that was being sung. However, when the words are put together with pictures

and film clips the song takes on a new meaning. It took a lot of thought to produce this. Sure
brings back lots of memories. It makes the lyrics really come alive!! This is very well done.
