6 KEY THEMES
Dear Colleague,
I trust you have heard and are aware of the innovation
wave hitting Asia. Just earlier this year, the Prime Minister
of Singapore announced a S$19 billion plan to support
Singapores R&D efforts over the next five years with the
aim of transforming Singapore into a vibrant R&D hub that
thrives on innovation and enterprise.
The budget committed towards the Research Innovation
Enterprise 2020 Plan (RIE2020) is an 18 per cent jump
from RIE2015s S$16.1 billion and is the biggest budget to
date. That means we are venturing into areas of research
innovation that we have yet to explore and it is only through
translating research into solutions that we are able to
achieve breakthroughs in the field.

Patents are seldom used as a source of information by
non-technical people, even if they offer information that can
be observed from a market perspective. Thus, explaining
how patents can be exploited with this aim, the workshop
focuses on the information that can be extracted from
patents and the implications and insight that they provide
about the competitive environment, if read with a strategic
eye. Recognising future technological trends and monitoring
competitors' activities is indispensable for maintaining
competitiveness in today's business.
