EDITOR'S NOTE
WE ARE WHAT WE
REPEATEDLY DO. EXCELLENCE
THEN IS NOT AN ACT,
IT IS A HABIT.
WILL DURANT

I HAVE ALWAYS LOVED this

quote and though I thought
Aristotle was the one behind
the words, it turns out, author Will Durant penned this
wonderful phrase in his book explaining what he believed
Aristotle was trying to get across. As a journalist, I felt it my
duty to clear the air regarding who wrote this quote in case
you, too, attributed it to Aristotle. Now, let's move on as to
why this quote is so perfect for this issue ...
I chose it because I feel like all of the kids featured in
our Max Results section have worked diligently to make
excellence a habit. They practice hard, eat right, fuel up
with important supplements from Max Muscle to help their
bodies recover and get stronger, and they sacrifice much
to be the best at their sports. They are inspiring individuals,
some even as young as 9 and 11, and it's awesome to read
about their goals, what they feel it means to be a champion,
and much more. Turn to page 32 and start reading about
these incredible kids who we are honored to feature in
our Youth Issue. For those who aren't making excellence a
repeated habit, take those words to heart and go for it!
In our health section (pgs. 16-19), we have some important
articles on concussion and football and whether or not your
child should play, plus we have information on e-cigarettes
and the dangers posed to your children should they take up
the habit, as well as how to know if your child is addicted to
technology and social media and what to do about it.
In our fitness section (pgs. 24-29), find nine important tips
every teen athlete should know and a mentally fit article on
how to deal with bullying (and how not to be one!).
In our nutrition section (pgs. 46-52), there is some great
information directed at teens to help them make smart food
choices for themselves. From breakfast, lunch and snacks,
the author explains good choices vs. bad ones and how
to know the difference. Another important article is on five
foods your child should be eating for optimal health. Plus,
the author provides a list of foods to eat to boost probiotics
in your body, which science is showing leads to healthier
gut function and ultimately better brain power. If you're
looking for a fun recipe to try as a family, look no further
than the one on page 48 that features "Zoodles!"
We hope you enjoy our special Youth Issue. Even if you
don't have kids yourself, this information is good for all of us!
Until next time,

JOE'S CORNER

HEY JOE,
what are
antioxidants &
free radicals?

BEFORE WE BEGIN discussing

antioxidants, you must first
understand free radicals. Free
radicals are the natural enemy of
antioxidants and are by-products
of us living. Our bodies produce
them when our cells use oxygen.
So the very essence of life, oxygen,
eventually causes cell damage!
Free radicals move around in our
bodies as unstable molecules looking
for a way to stabilize. To do this,
they have to borrow an electron
from a stable molecule. The trouble
begins here as that destroys the
stable molecule, and damages our
system. The result of this can be
minor to severe. The breakdown of
healthy cells is believed to be the root
of many diseases, and, of course,
premature aging. Enter, antioxidants,
the superhero in the fight against
those nasty scavenger free radicals!
The word antioxidant sounds
intimidating. When I ask friends
and coworkers to describe what an
antioxidant is, they all fall a little
short in their description. But, they all
know antioxidants are good for you
and keep you healthy. The following
is a brief and accurate description so
when I ask you what an antioxidant
is, I will get a good answer.
Antioxidant is the collective name
for the vitamins, minerals, carotenoids,
and polyphenols that protect the
body from harmful free radicals. They
encompass vitamins, minerals, and a
host of nutrients. Many of you have
heard me refer to the process of aging
as the equivalency of rusting. Oxygen
causes metal to oxidize or rust. We
must treat it to protect against it or
12

metal can have a very short lifespan.

Think of a metal bike chain. If you
keep it well lubricated and dont let it
get rusty, it will last years longer! Our
bodies are no different. Our bodies
need antioxidants because they naturally destroy free radicals. So, in
essence, antioxidants help us preserve
healthy cells and can lead to a longer,
healthier life.
Your grandmother knew that fruits,
vegetables, and legumes were just
naturally good for you. But what she
did not know was exactly why. And
now in this multimedia era, there
really is no excuse for all of us not
to be somewhat educated on this
important subject.
The next question you are probably

SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER 2016

Joe Wells is the founder and CEO of

Max Muscle. He shares important tips for

every month. Read past columns on
MaxSportsandFitness.com.

asking yourself is, OK, what foods

contain these amazing nutrients?
The quick and simple answer takes
us right back to eating a healthy diet
that contains at least five servings of
fruits and vegetables a day. Not only
are you getting a powerful boost of
antioxidants to protect your health
when you eat this way, but youre
benefiting your health with fiber and
other nutrients that your body needs.
But if you want to kick up the dose
and have a little extra insurance
that you have plenty of troops in
your war against free radicals, then
here are some tips on maximizing
your antioxidant levels. Brightly
colored fruits and vegetables contain
vitamin A and carotenoids, two
valuable antioxidants. Vitamin C is
found in abundance in citrus fruits,
broccoli, green peppers, strawberries,
tomatoes, and green leafy vegetables.
Green leafy vegetables along with
whole grains, nuts, seeds, vegetable,
and liver oil contain the antioxidant
vitamin E.
Blueberries are one of my favorite
fruits; theyre packed with antioxidants and are low in calories! I
drink two shakes a day with one cup of
frozen wild blueberries in each shake.
Here is my recipe: 12 oz of water
or light cranberry juice, one cup wild
blueberries, 1 oz of Max Vit-Acell,
and one scoop of MaxPro All Natural
Vanilla protein; mix it all up in a
blender and enjoy! Stop by your local
Max Muscle Nutrition store and ask
one of our Certified Fitness Nutrition
Coaches for more information on
healthy Max Muscle shakes. MS&F

SCIENCE ALERT - NEW GROUND-BREAKING STUDY!

GROUND-BREAKING STUDY REVEALS

MaxxTOR is a scientific breakthrough developed by

y
Dr. Phillip Harvey and the Max Muscle product development
team, that has been clinically proven to increase muscle
mass, increase strength and decrease body fat!

SHOCKING RESULTS
IN ONLY 8 WEEKS!

A recent double-blind study on MaxxTOR conducted by

Dr. Guillermo Escalante at the California State University in
San Bernardino and published in the prestigious Journal of
the International Society of Sports Nutrition, showed a significant increase in lean body mass and upper and lower body
strength as well as a significant reduction in body fat in only
8 weeks. The ground breaking study validates the safety and
science behind this incredible product and the results it
produces on size, strength and fat loss for both men and
women when combined with resistance training.
The key ingredient in MaxxTOR is Mediator Phosphatidic Acid (PA), clinically proven to be one of the most powerful
natural molecular activators of protein synthesis by activating
the mammalian target of rapamysin (mTOR) signaling
pathway. Now over 11 published research studies documenting that oral PA supplementation activates mTOR
signaling that is induced by mechanical muscle activation
(e.g., weightlifting). This key ingredient combined with the
other synergistic ingredients in the MaxxTOR formula,
makes MaxxTOR a truly unique and innovative product
proven to get your results in only 8 weeks.
MaxxTOR is exclusively available at Max Muscle stores nationwide. Find the store nearest you at

and life satisfaction, occur much
more rapidly as soon as 24
months than do the physical
health benefits, which may not be
realized until decades later.

BE PLAYING
FOOTBALL?
The Dangers of
CONCUSSION
IS IT WORTH
THE RISK?
BY LINDA HEPLER, BSN, RN

ACCORDING TO a recent Harris

Poll, football continues its long
reign as Americas most popular
sport. From pre-game tailgating to
the actual event, where any team
can win any week, to post-game
celebration parties, and of course,
the Super Bowl one of the mostwatched television programs in the
country whats not to love?
Yet despite its popularity, there is
increasing concern and controversy
about the long-term safety of playing
16

football, which has resulted in many

parents deciding not to allow their
kids to participate in the game. In
fact, a recent Bloomberg Politics poll
found that half of all Americans say
they wouldnt want their child to play
football.
The biggest concern? Head injury.
According to HealthResearchFunding.
org, concussion rates for children under
age 19 who play tackle football have
doubled over the last decade, most
occurring during practices. Concussions
can occur with a blow to the head
through helmet to helmet contact,

SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER 2016

and if undiagnosed and left untreated

can lead to permanent brain damage.
What is more, subconcussive hits,
or repeated blows to the head that
dont result in concussions can, over
a long period of time, have long term
health effects, too primarily chronic
traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a
progressive degenerative disease
of the brain found in athletes (and
others) with a history of repetitive brain
trauma.
CTE caused by repetitive blows
to the head as a result of playing
football was brought to light in 2002

by Bennet Omalu, a Nigerian-American

physician and forensic pathologist, who
discovered the condition during an
autopsy of former Pittsburgh Steelers
player Mike Webster. This finding,
as well as his subsequent reports of
CTE in other deceased NFL players,
eventually led to the book and later the
2015 film, Concussion.
It also spurred increasing concern
about whether children should be
playing football at all. If you were
to ask Omalu, the answer would be
no. In a 2015 The New York Times
editorial piece he wrote: If a child who
plays football is subjected to advanced
radiological and neurocognitive studies
during the season and several months
after the season, there can be evidence
of brain damage at the cellular level
of brain functioning, even if there
were no documented concussions
or reported symptoms. If that child
continues to play over many seasons,
these cellular injuries accumulate to
cause irreversible brain damage, which
we know now by the name chronic
traumatic encephalopathy
But many sports medicine physicians,
like Kristin Ernest, MD, who practices
at Texas Childrens Hospital the
Woodlands, are less adamant about
banning youth tackle football. There
is no conclusive evidence that shows
us children shouldnt play football, she
claimed. But they should be taught
proper technique, and they should have
proper fitting equipment.
Jonathan Minor, MD, a pediatric
sports medicine specialist on the
concussion management team at
CHOC hospital in California, agreed
that we dont know whether theres
a cumulative effect of head injury in
football beginning in childhood. But
he does believe that such injuries
may be prevented by introducing kids
first to non-impact football, allowing
them to develop skills before playing
the contact game. He also advocates
core strengthening exercises as a part
of football practice. There is some
research showing that core and neck
strengthening can help to prevent
traumatic brain injury during football,
he said.
And the American Academy of
Pediatrics (AAP), while endorsing
efforts to limit contact practices in
youth football, recently refused to
support those calling for an outright
ban on tackling in football for athletes

below age 18, saying that it is unwilling

to recommend such a fundamental
change in the way the game is played.
The bottom line is that its up to
parents to decide whether the risks
of youth tackle football outweigh the
recreational benefit. Some things to
consider for kids who do play football:

ages/grades are covered and whether

the law pertains to public and private
schools and athletic leagues. Worse
yet, almost all lack consequences for
schools or leagues that dont comply
with the law. Find your state laws on
USAFootball.com and make sure they
are being followed.

1. Learn the youth concussion

laws in your state. While all states
now have laws designed to reduce risk
of concussion and other head injuries
in youth football, not all state laws
are equal, according to USA Football.
Fewer than half contain all of the key
principles, such as limits on full contact
practice, mandatory education about
concussion symptoms for coaches,
removal of a player from the game if a
head injury is suspected, and written
medical clearance for return to play.
Only a handful of laws specify which

2. Make sure your child is

being taught heads up tackle
technique, advised Dr. Ernest. This
USA-designed program utilizes five
fundamentals through a series of drills
to reinforce proper tackling mechanics
and teaches players to focus on
reducing helmet contact. Research
presented at the American Academy
of Pediatrics recent meeting in
Washington D.C. showed that limits on
full-contact practice as well as teaching
Heads Up tackling are working to
reduce concussion risk in youth football.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT CONCUSSIONS

WHAT IT IS: According to sports medicine physician Kristin Ernest, MD, a

concussion is any force transmitted to the brain itself. While it generally occurs
with a blow to the head, any injury that causes the brain to shift rapidly within
the skull (such as a whiplash injury) can cause a concussion.
SYMPTOMS OF CONCUSSION: While symptoms can vary from child to child, said Dr.
Ernest, some of the most common are headache, nausea, dizziness, irritability or
crying, trouble concentrating, and sleep disturbance (sleeping more or less than
usual).
HOW ITS DIAGNOSED: A concussion will not show up on imaging tests, such as
MRI, said Dr. Ernest. It is diagnosed through medical evaluation of symptoms
and often, neurocognitive testing.
HOW CONCUSSIONS ARE TREATED: Concussions are treated with both physical
and cognitive rest, according to Dr. Ernest. This includes rest from all athletic
activities, as well as from homework and screen time. In general, recovery takes
about 7-10 days, longer for younger children and for those with a history of
migraine or ADHD.
SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER 2016 WWW.MAXSPORTSANDFITNESS.COM 17

3. Consider a baseline
neurocognitive test, such as
ImPACT testing, for your child prior
to the football season, even if its not
required by your childs coach, said
Dr. Minor. A neurocognitive test is a
computer-based 20-30 minute test that
measures brain functions like visual
and verbal memory and reaction time,
he explained. Its very helpful to do at
the beginning of the season and then
repeat if there are signs of concussion.
It can help, along with medical
evaluation, to make a diagnosis.

4. Make sure your child is

fitted properly with protective
equipment and wears it all the time.
5. Know the symptoms of
concussion and make sure your
child knows them, too. He should
know that its important to report any
of these symptoms to the coach and
to you and that he should be removed
from the practice or game immediately.
A child who is suspected to have a
concussion should see a licensed health
professional as soon as possible.

6. Follow the doctors orders

exactly if your child has a
concussion, said Dr. Ernest. Failure
to follow orders for physical and
cognitive rest can prolong recovery.
And know that those who have a first
concussion are 3-6 times more likely
to suffer another concussion than an
athlete who has not had a concussion.
So returning to play before the brain
has fully healed can put your athlete at
higher risk for complications if a second
concussion is sustained. MS&F

CAN KIDS BE ADDICTED TO TECHNOLOGY?

SCHOOL IS OVER, parents home from work, and another

evening begins. But instead of lively discussion or board games
between family members, all heads are bent over devices,
intent upon video games, Netflix, and Facebook. Even the
toddler is playing on an iPad.
Welcome to the new
age of technology.
Over the past decade,
our lifestyles have
changed drastically,
with media use
pervasive among
all ages, especially
teens. This constant
connectedness is
an adaptation to our
society of rapidly
evolving social norms,
and is generally
healthy enough for
teens as long as
theres a balance
bike rides, ball games,
other hobbies and
interests besides screen time. But overuse of technology can
become problematic for some, said Lisa Strohman, JD, PhD,
author of Raising Kids in a Technology Addicted World and
founder of the Technology Wellness Center. Not only can it
interfere with school performance, physical fitness, and sleep,
it can actually damage the brain. If youre spending more
than four hours at a time using technology without challenging
yourself in other ways, parts of your brain can atrophy, she
explained.
How can you tell if theres a problem with technology abuse?
It isnt simply the amount of time spent in front of one screen or
another, said Rose Ann Rook, a clinical addictions specialist at
Timberline Knolls Residential Treatment Center in Illinois. After
all, kids use computers and other technology in school and to do
homework. Instead it is the importance that it begins to take on
in life. Technology abuse is considered a process addiction, or
a type of acting out behavior other than substance abuse, said
Rook. But it is much like a substance use disorder, she added.
You get the same kind of high, a loss of control, an obsession

about it your mind is on it all of the time. You continue using it

despite negative consequences.
Negative consequences go far beyond choosing not to study for
a test and failing it the next day because you were too busy playing
Bandland 2. One of the biggest problems, according to Dr. Strohman,
is that kids use
apps, especially
anonymous
apps like After
School, YikYak,
and Whisper to
avoid the prying
eyes of parents
and other adults
as they express
themselves
freely without
consequences.
Unfortunately,
along with
complaints
about classes
and parents
and info on the
latest movie are a flood of comments posted on these sites about
peoples physical appearance, especially weight. Even comments
encouraging other users to harm themselves. Kids can easily fall
prey to cyberbullying, said Dr. Strohman, who claims that as many
as 85 percent of kids in this country are bullied online, with very few
of them talking to parents about it. And cyberbullying can lead to
anxiety, depression, other addictions, and even suicide, she added.
But as much as we might like to go back to a simpler time before
smart phones and iPads, it just isnt possible, said Chris Rothey,
Executive Chairman at Net Nanny, maker of parental control software.
We cant go back; this is the world we live in, he explained. But
parents have to be the parents in this digital world. They have to
set down rules, to establish boundaries on technology usage time
limits, and allowable applications. And they have to model good
behavior themselves.
One good place to read the latest research about problematic
technology use and also to learn about finding balance and dealing
with devices, said Rothey, is CommonSenseMedia.org. You can also

E-CIGARETTES:
THE NEW
NICOTINE FIX?
DAVID CALHOUN

INGRI DEGROOTE
THE GOOD NEWS? Cigarette smoking has
declined among middle school and high
school students in recent years, according
to the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention. But a growing number of
teens (16 percent of high schoolers and
5.3 percent of middle schoolers) are using
electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes), which
deliver the addictive substance nicotine
via vapor sans tobacco burning. And
that is bad news, according to Hansa
Bhargava, MD, pediatrician and WebMD
Medical Editor. Although e-cigarettes may
be considered safer by some because
they are tobacco free, said Dr. Bhargava,
they still have many harmful ingredients.
This includes the addictive substance
nicotine. Nicotine addiction can have
bad effects on brain development, and
addiction can last a lifetime.
E-cigarettes, developed in China in
2003, hit the shores of America in 2007,
marketed as an alternative means to
smoking. The battery-powered vaporizers
have since gained traction as smokers
explore various smoking cessation
tools. But at present, theres not enough
scientific evidence to conclude whether
e-cigarettes are a safe and effective way
to quit smoking. In fact, the U.S. Preventive
Services Task Force recently concluded
that there is insufficient evidence to
recommend electronic nicotine delivery
systems for tobacco cessation.
While some, including Danelle Fisher,
MD, chair of the pediatric department at
Providence Saint Johns Health Center
in Santa Monica, California, maintain that
e-cigarettes are potentially helpful for
smoking cessation, most teens taking
up the habit have never even smoked a
regular cigarette. Instead, theyre lured

to vaping by advertising tactics similar

to those used years ago by the tobacco
industry with the suggestion that using
the product will surely make you cool,
attractive, and independent. In addition,
E-cigarette manufacturers market the
product toward teens as a way to get
nicotine in a less harmful way, said Dr.
Fisher.
Add in those teen-friendly flavors, such
as Candy Apple, Bubble Gum, Cherry
Cola, Marshmallow, SMores, Chocolate,
Watermelon, and Taffy, and youve got a
recipe for nicotine addiction.
What the manufacturers dont tell you
about are the other harmful ingredients.
One very concerning substance found
in e-cigarettes is an ingredient used in
anti-freeze, said Dr. Bhargava. Also
some e-cigarettes contain formaldehyde,
another known carcinogen.
And those yummy flavors? One of
the flavoring chemicals, according to Dr.
Bhargava, is diacetyl, which can cause
serious lung disease.
Earlier this spring, a new federal rule
banned the sale of e-cigarettes to those
under 18; also requiring package warning
labels, and making all products subject
to Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
approval. Potentially, the FDA could
regulate the use of kid-friendly flavoring.
But underage kids have always found
ways to get cigarettes and alcohol,
and e-cigs are no exception. Which is
why Dr. Bhargava, a parent of two preteens, suggests that parents strongly
discourage the use of e-cigarettes. Your
kids safety begins at home, she said. As
a parent, have that conversation about
not using e-cigarettes with your teens.

FOREVER YOUNG

Passing

WISDOM

A handful of 50+ individuals share

their best tips for the best life you can
have! BY BECKY PETERSON

YOUTH. WHAT AN INTERESTING

WORD! When I started looking for
the definition of youth I was pleasantly
surprised it could also be attached to
one chronologically challenged like
myself, describing the attitude and zeal
with which one acts, a.k.a. Forever
Young.
I discovered youth is considered
between the time puberty takes place
and the end of adolescence. Psychology
Today said, Adolescence can last
into the mid 20s and that ones
thoughts, ideals and concepts develop
at this period in life greatly influencing
ones future life, playing a major role in
character and personality formation.
Its at this juncture, I feel we need to
share with our youth about life, health,
and the important role of fitness in our/
their lives!
With this in mind, I struck out and
asked several people aged 50 or older
this question: If you could share
something youve learned over the years
with the youth of today, what would it
20 WWW.MAXMUSCLE.COM

be, and why? I talked to people where

I work out, at the store, my friends, and
frankly anyone I encountered between
the ages of 50 and 90! Yup, 90!
My first response to the question
came from Dan, 55, who said, Be less
concerned with what people who have
no consequence in your life think about
you. Trust in yourself! Be happy and
grateful for the things and people you
have in life and less about what you
dont have. Why? Time is too precious
to waste on worrying about rude people
and things that dont matter. Be happy
with yourself!
Judy, 70, said, Be tolerant of others
and the way they choose to live their
life. If youre not, it can make you a
nasty-crusty unhappy person, one thats
difficult to be around.
Russ, 60, said, Be honest with
yourself and others! Honesty is really
the best policy. Lies only create stress
and distrust wherever you go. Sooner
or later your dishonesty will catch up to
you!

SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER 2016

Vesta, 90, said, Oh dear, stay active!

Dont ever quit moving! Its just awful
trying to get back in the swing of things
again! Walk, swim, jump rope! Just get
off the couch and be active!
A small group of men and women
ages ranging from 45-89 doing water
aerobics took a moment to answer my
question. Their collective advice was to,
unplug, people! The group had been
at their Friday breakfast hang time
sitting outside in the sun, watching the
passersby when, this sweet little thing
was walking along texting and she ran
right into a bike rack! (She survived,
they assured me.)
Last and most exciting, Rob, 85,
who just got off his blood pressure
medication (woo-hoo!) said, Diet!
You are what you eat! Garbage in,
garbage youll be and you'll be fighting
a losing battle with your health all your
life. Its never too soon to commit to
eating healthy and leading an active, fit
lifestyle.

9 TRAINING TIPS
PHOTOS BY JAMESPATRICK.COM

BY CARL GALLOWAY, MA, CSCS

for Teen Athletes

AFTER SPENDING some time

working as a high school sports

performance coach, Ive realized
that there are some principles
that govern athletic performance.
Some of these seem like common
sense, but what Ive learned these
days is that common sense is
actually somewhat uncommon.
These nine principles form the
baseline of what I wish every high
school athlete knew.

1. MORE ISNT ALWAYS BETTER.

Just like anything, too much of a good

thing becomes a problem. Lifting
weights and training in general is no
24 WWW.MAXMUSCLE.COM

different. Too many young athletes

assume that if they get stronger lifting
three or four days a week, lifting 5
or 6 days a week should make them
the Incredible Hulk by spring football.
The problem is that everything is good
until increasing amounts dont add
results and anything more than that
actually becomes detrimental.
Heres an example. Have a spoonful
of your favorite ice cream and try to
tell me that you dont want more.
Now, try eating two containers of your
favorite ice cream and see how you
feel after that. See the difference?
Somewhere in between those two
extremes lies the perfect amount.
Its different for everything, but for

SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER 2016

teenage athletes it sits somewhere

around three to four lifting sessions
per week.

2. MASTER THE TECHNIQUE.

Plain and simple, lifting weights with

bad technique is an injury waiting
to happen. On top of this, doing
exercises incorrectly wont even
improve your performance because
youll be abusing your muscles and
building bad movement patterns.
Focus on your technique first, then
accomplish the exercise at the right
speed, and then worry about adding
weight to the bar. Most athletes do
this in reverse order. Be the smart one
and keep yourself healthy.

3. YOU CANT OUT-TRAIN A BAD

DIET. No matter how hard you train,

youll never be able to counteract the

effects of a poor diet. The food you
eat provides the fuel that your body
needs to sustain you through those
grueling workouts and to recover from
them when its over. So, not only does
a bad diet prevent you from growing
new muscle after an intense workout,
but it prevents you from even having
the energy to make it through it. So,
instead of walking off the court and
stuffing your face with whatever you
can get from the nearest drive-thru,
make an effort to eat a meal high
in protein, vegetables, and complex
carbohydrates like chicken, steamed
vegetables, and brown rice.

4. FOCUS ON RECOVERY.

Night-time is when your body

produces all the hormones that allow
your muscles to grow and for you to
neurologically engrave all the new
motor patterns that you developed
at practice, like hitting a ball to the
opposite field or learning how to cross
a ball with your left foot at soccer
practice. The problem is that when
you dont get enough sleep to recover
from training, youll go in to the next
day still fatigued from the previous
workout. Do this enough times and
youll be over trained and at risk for an
injury. Instead, aim for eight hours of
sleep every night to be at your best.

7. YOU HAVE TO MOVE WELL TO

PLAY WELL. Remember that you

have to make plays if you want to

contribute to your teams success.
This means that all the strength in
the world wont help if you move like
youre running through quicksand.
Incorporate some mobility work into
every single one of your workouts to
make you more like a leopard and
less like a sloth. Also, it may not be a
bad idea to leave the weights alone
every once and a while and work
through some body-weight/calisthenic
exercise circuits. Theyre a great
change of pace to the typical routine,
and, best of all, theyll help you move
well, which should give you more
opportunities to play well.

8. EVERYONE HAS BAD DAYS

Understand that the path to

achievement isnt a smooth one.
There will be setbacks along the way.
Injuries, slumps, and training days

where you just feel zapped are just

a few of the things that threaten to
take the wind out of your sails. But as
Oliver Goldsmith said, Our greatest
glory is not in never falling but in
rising every time we fall. When those
days come, and believe me they will,
remember that the victory belongs to
those who refuse to quit.

9. CONSISTENCY WINS

Be consistent. Missing one training

day turns in to two days and before
you know it youve missed a week. Fix
this by putting on your hard hat every
day and going to work. This doesnt
mean that youre lifting weights from
sun up to sun down, rather youre
looking for some way to improve every
day. Theres an old saying among
lifters, He who trains the longest,
gets the strongest. Dont neglect
the advantage you give yourself by
consistently showing up and going to
work. MS&F

5. BEGIN WITH THE END IN THE

MIND. Nobody starts building a

skyscraper without deciding how many

floors its going to have and no one
starts a trip without deciding where
he or she is going. By the same token,
you shouldnt start down the path of
self-improvement without deciding
what you want to look or play like
when its all said and done. Start
with a mental image of your finished
product and let that be the target that
you work towards.

6. BE A GOOD TEAMMATE. Nobody

gets there on their own. That was

true before you and it still will be long
after youve hung up your cleats. Build
relationships with those committed
to working just as hard as you while
holding each other accountable to the
goals that youve set for yourselves
and your team. If everyone works,
everyone wins.

OUR GREATEST GLORY IS NOT

IN NEVER FALLING BUT IN RISING
EVERY TIME WE FALL. Oliver Goldsmith

HOW TO DEAL
WITH BULLYING
BY ROCHELLE MARAPAO

UNLESS YOUVE directly

experienced bullying, you may
not realize just how devastating
it can be, especially to a child
or teenager. Besides causing
deep hurt, bullying can leave
anyone feeling frightened, angry,
depressed, and totally undermined.
Bullying should never be tolerated,
and whether youre the one being
bullied, or youre a teacher or
parent who thinks a child is being
bullied or engaged in bullying
behavior, there are steps you can
take to deal with the problem.
According to a study done by
the National Center for Educational
Statistics in 2015, one out of every
four students report being bullied

during the school year; 64 percent of

children being bullied did not report it,
and only 36 percent did.
Bullies tend to pick on people who
are different or dont fit in with the
mainstream. It may be because of
how a person dresses, acts, or their
race, religion, or sexual orientation. It
may simply be that a person is new to
the school or neighborhood and hasnt
made friends yet.

WHAT IS BULLYING?

In recent years, the stories of bullying

amongst children and teens have
flooded our media outlets. But what
exactly is it?
Bullying is repeated aggressive
behavior that can be physical, verbal,
or relational. Boys frequently bully

Types of Bullying

using physical threats and actions,

while girls are more likely to engage
in verbal or relationship bullying. But,
the results are similar:
You are made to feel hurt, angry,
afraid, helpless, isolated, ashamed,
and even guilty that the bullying is
somehow your fault. You may even
feel suicidal.
Your physical health is likely to
suffer, and you are at a greater risk
of developing mental health problems
such as depression, anxiety, low selfesteem, or adult onset PTSD (posttraumatic stress disorder).
Youre likely to miss, skip, or drop
out of school to avoid being bullied.
The most damaging aspect of
bullying is its repetition. Bullies are
often relentless bullying over and
over for long periods of time. The
victim may live in constant fear of
where and when the bully will strike
next, what theyll do, and how far
theyll go.

SIGNS YOUR CHILD

IS BEING BULLIED

There are many warning signs that

may indicate that someone is affected
by bullying. Recognizing the signs
are an important first step in taking
action against bullying because not all
children who are bullied ask for help,
says Kahanaaloha Kuikahi-Duncan,
Clinical Psychology, PhD.
Some of the warning signs include:
Changes or problems in appetite and
sleep
Not wanting to go to school
Avoiding social situations
Isolating themselves when in
public (i.e., walking around school by
themselves, sitting in places where
others are unable to find them)
Frequent complaints of headaches,
stomach aches, or feeling sick
A display of overly anxious or
saddened feelings that can increase on
Sunday evenings

UNDERSTANDING
WHY KIDS BULLY

There are five main reasons why

kids bully others and it usually stems
from their own insecurities, says
Dr. Kuikahi-Duncan. Kids will bully
because theyre jealous, to make
themselves popular, to look tough or
feel powerful because theyre being
bullied themselves and/or to escape
their own problems. As parents, its

important to recognize where this
negative behavior is coming from and
how you can help if your child is being
targeted.
Bullying is often a learned behavior
where the bully can learn aggressive
behavior from their experiences at
home. For example, as a parent, you
may be setting a bad example for your
kids by displaying bullying behavior
such as:
Abusing your childs sports coach or
members of the opposing team
Swearing at other drivers on the
road
Humiliating a waitress, shop
assistant, or cab driver who makes a
mistake
Talking negatively about other
students, parents, or teachers so that
your child thinks its acceptable to use
verbal abuse to intimidate others
Some other factors to consider
are that bullying thrives in schools
where faculty and staff dont address

it, where there is no policy against it,

and where there is little supervision
of students, especially during lunch,
bathroom breaks, and recess, says
Dr. Kuikahi-Duncan. Models of
bullying behavior are quite prevalent
throughout our society, especially
in television, movies, and video
games. And, when children are
aggregated together, they associate
with others who are similar to them
or have qualities or characteristics
that, in some way, support their own
behaviors.

IS YOUR CHILD A BULLY?

It can come as a shock to a parent

to learn that their child is a bully and
the profile for bullies is diverse. Many
children who bully others witness
bullying behavior at home, while
some have been victims of bullying
themselves, and others come from
homes where bullying has never been
practiced.

WHAT
TO DO
If You Are Being Bullied:

Dont Blame Yourself. Its not your fault. No matter what someone
says or does, you should not be ashamed of who you are or what you
feel.
Be Proud of Who You Are. Despite what a bully says, there are
many wonderful things about you. Keep those in mind instead of the
messages you hear from bullies.
Get Help. Talk to a parent, teacher, counselor, or other trusted adult.
Seeing a counselor doesnt mean there is something wrong with you.
Learn to Deal With Stress. Finding ways to relieve stress can
make you more resilient so you wont feel overwhelmed by bullying.
Exercise, meditation, positive self-talk, and breathing exercises are all
good ways to manage the stress from bullying.

If Your Child is a Bully:

Here are some warning signs that

your child may be a bully:
Frequently becomes violent with
others
Gets into physical or verbal fights
with others
Gets sent to the principals office or
detention frequently
Has extra money or new belongings
that cannot be explained
Is quick to blame others
Will not accept responsibility for his
or her actions
Has friends who bully others
Needs to win or be the best at
everything

WHAT WE CAN DO
TO BATTLE BULLYING

I encourage parents to spend more

quality time with your children to get
to know them and help them build
strong and appropriate social skills.
Its important to help them manage
and cope with emotions and different

Learn About Your Childs Life. If your behavior at home isnt

negatively influencing your child, its possible his or her friends/peers are
encouraging the bullying behavior.
Educate Your Child About Bullying. Your child may have difficulty
reading social signs or may not understand how hurtful and damaging
their behavior can be. Foster empathy and awareness by encouraging
your child to look at their actions from the victims perspective. Remind
your child that bullying can have legal consequences.
Set Limits With Technology. Let your child know youll be
monitoring his/her use of computers, emails, text messaging, and social
media. Limit the amount of time they spend playing video games and
watching television.
Manage Stress. Teach your child positive ways to manage stress.
Your childs bullying may be an attempt at relieving stress. Or your own
stress, anxiety, or worry may be creating an unstable home environment.
Exercise, spending time in nature, or playing with a pet are great ways for
both kids and adults to let off steam and relieve stress.
Establish Consistent Rules of Behavior. Make sure your child
understands your rules and the punishment for breaking them. Children
may not think they need discipline, but a lack of boundaries sends a
signal that the child is unworthy or the parents time, care, and attention.
experiences they are going through.
Its also a good idea for parents to
monitor their childrens social media
accounts, says Dr. Kuikahi-Duncan.
If your child is being bullied, he
or she should be encouraged to
report the bullying immediately to
an adult and refrain from being a
bully bystander giving bullying an
audience.
As bullying is being given more
attention in the media and becoming
more common among our youth,
bullying awareness should be given
more attention. Parents and teachers
can engage in anti-bullying tactics

and have open discussions with

the youth. If bullying behavior is
witnessed, adults should intervene
immediately and provide alternative
positive ways of behaving. Teaching
youth skills of conflict resolution,
problem solving, listening, empathy,
assertion, and negotiation can be
helpful, says Dr. Kuikahi-Duncan.
As a society, we need to be better
at helping our youth understand and
accept others who may be different.
We need to combat the power
imbalance that exists in bullying with
the ability to accept, love, and respect
every person we meet. MS&F

MAX FITSPIRATION

Tawny Clark
STORY & PHOTO BY JAMES PATRICK

IN 2010, at the age of 34, Tawny Clark was in the

best shape and health of her life after doing her first
fitness competition. However, she continued to hide
an eating disorder she had since childhood from
those around her. I never let anyone actually see
me binging, Tawny said. It was embarrassing and
shameful. I just always made a point to do it when I
knew no one would be home. She would go as far
as hiding empty food wrappers at the bottom of
the trash so there would be no visible evidence.
To others, Tawny kept up a healthy and fitnessoriented faade. I had physically accomplished
a number of activities throughout my life,
including running two marathons, completing a
Tough Mudder, a triathlon, and even stepping
on the competitive bikini stage, she said.
Regardless of this, she said, I still had not
conquered my innermost demons.
After her competition, Tawny decided to seek help and
recover from her eating disorder. I wanted to get off the
hamster wheel once and for all, she said.
Tawny read a book by Dr. Judith Beck on diet solutions
and discovered that the author lived in the same city. After
a consultation, the doctor referred Tawny to a behavioral
cognitive therapist to start treatment.
Six years later and Tawny remains focused on her goal
of recovering. She receives guidance from healthcare
professionals, support from her family and friends, and
is consistent to a macronutrient meal plan. Her goal is to
inspire and motivate others to realize that eating disorders
can be put to rest, and that a balanced life of fitness and
well-being can be achieved. MS&F

He is my No. 1 support system in life.
Hes never missed a game even if that

BY JACKIE CLASSEN

MEET MATT MIKESELL, 26, of

Denton, TX, a self-proclaimed
fitness fanatic who is not only
passionate about living a fit and
healthy lifestyle himself, but has
also dedicated his life to a career
helping other athletes achieve their
competitive dreams.

Matt is currently in a doctorate

program earning a PhD in Counseling
Psychology with an emphasis in
Sports Psychology and he specializes
in helping athletes of all levels learn
to mentally train to be the best
athlete and person they can be. His
take-home message to his athletes is
simple: you give power to what you
focus on, good or bad. In other words,
if you focus on negative thoughts, you
will naturally achieve negative results,
but if you learn to focus on positive
thought processes, you can learn to
mentally train your brain.
In his work with high level
collegiate athletes who are focused on
transitioning into professional athletic
careers, Matt's goal is to help them
learn to master having positive mental
conversations with themselves. Matt
focuses his training on the mental
component of athletics, which he calls
getting in the mental weight room.
According to Matt, In the
mental weight room, we focus on
things that will help them, not hurt
them. For many athletes, the hard
mental training involves developing
confidence. It is natural to have
negative thoughts, especially when
things dont go according to the plan.
The challenge is what are you going
to do about it.
40 WWW.MAXMUSCLE.COM

A collegiate two-sport athlete

himself, Matt knows first-hand the
importance of physical training and
how to achieve muscle memory,
but what he helps athletes learn to
understand is how to take a naturally
occurring thought and consciously
make a decision as to what to do
with that thought. What happens to
an athlete when things dont go well
on the field? How do you take that

SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER 2016

fumble and the negative thoughts

that come from it and turn it around?
Matt understands that there are
many different ways to address these
naturally occurring thoughts, but the
key is to decide what you are going to
do with it and then follow through.
Originally from Wisconsin, Matt
moved to Colorado to earn a Master's
in Sports and Performance Psychology
from the University of Denver. In

Denver, he worked with middle and

high school athletes involved in school
and competitive sports. It was in
Denver also that he discovered Max
Muscle when he started researching
supplement stores while he
transitioned from a collegiate athlete
to a lifetime health enthusiast.
Matt knew that this new phase of
his life would be different. In the past,
he had coaches planning his workouts;
the when, where, and what of his
training. As a busy graduate student,
he had to find new motivation to
ensure he continued to consistently
work out and make time for healthy
choices.
At Mile High Max Muscle, Matt
encountered a staff of highly trained
individuals who were first interested
in getting to know him and his goals
before making recommendations for
supplement products that would help
him achieve these fitness goals. He
found the experience very refreshing.
Matt was initially looking for a
quality protein to take post workout
for the times his schedule prevented
him from eating optimally. MaxPro
(chocolate) has become his go-to
protein and he has now added FBX
2.0 as his pre-workout and ARM for

his top quality recovery choice so he

can go strong in the gym the next day.
Currently, Matt is focusing on building
lean muscle and since incorporating
Max Muscle products into his training
routine, he has seen great results,
going from 180 pounds to 195-200
pounds with a much leaner, muscular
look in just 18 months.
Why does Matt choose Max
Muscle for his go-to source of quality
supplements? For me, Max Muscle
is different and unique because the
staff knows the products, they use the
products, they know the customers,
and they care about you as a person
beyond a client," he said. "I think
the reason the products are the best
is because I have seen the results.
Scientific results can say everything
about a product, but at the end of
the day, it is about the results and I
have seen the results.
This fitness fanatic says it best:
Ever since that first stop inside a
store, I have been impressed with
everything Max Muscle the products,
the results, the magazine, and the
authentic conversation I am able to
have with workers while in the store.
Consequently, I have been advertising
the brand to everyone I see. MS&F

MATTS TIPS FOR

THE MENTAL
WEIGHT
ROOM

1. You can do a workout and get

nothing out of it or you can do a
workout and get everything from
it. If I am squatting and I am zoning
out, I will get one result but if I
am really focusing on the muscles
engaged, I could get much better
results. Stay focused and stay
present.

JOLYNN REDDON

BRIAN FURER

AMANDA FREESEMAN

DAWN THOMAS

TONI WARRICK

2. Try something different! Sometimes people get in the gym and have to get this
angry face on and feel they have to grind through it mentality ... but if I am spending
an hour and half of my day grinding through it, I am not enjoying the experience. If
you hate what you are doing then find something you do like. Have fun. Be active.
3. Find ways to be confident in the gym or find something you enjoy and can be
confident in and do it. Remember that everyone has to start somewhere and that is
OK. There can only be one strongest or skinniest person in the gym and it doesnt
mean everyone else doesnt matter. Everyone else has the same right to be there.
Everyone is worthy of being in the gym. Always remember, your self worth does not
come from how much you can lift or how fast you can run.

SCIENCE ALERT - THE SECRET BEHIND PRE-WORKOUTS

The truth that most supplement companies dont want you to know is too many stimulant based ingredients actually counteract the
effectiveness of what a pre-workout is supposed to do. Too many stimulants or the incorrect doses can act to prevent blood flow which
in turn limits your pump, strength, endurance and power. This can dehydrate you during your workout which negatively affects your
ability to properly recover afterwards not to mention the inability to focus properly.
An effective pre-workout should:

Deliver a natural clean energy boost with no

Delay muscle onset fatigue

SCIENCE ALERT - THE SECRET BEHIND GH & IGF-1 SUPPORT

Growth Hormone (GH) is an anabolic protein hormone secreted by the pituitary gland in the brain and
is responsible for the overall growth of the body (e.g., muscles and bones), fat breakdown, other metabolic effects and maintaining the immune system. After the age of 20 years, GH levels declines progressively and have been linked to many age-related changes including decreases in lean body mass,
increases in abdominal body fat and thinning of the skin. GH stimulates the release of the hormone
IGF-1 by the liver. The secreted IGF-1 then travels to tissues and is the key player in muscle growth.
GHTX is a scientifically-based formula to provide the body with precursors to support healthy levels of
Growth Hormone (GH) and Insulin-Like Growth Factor-1 (IGF-1) along with neuromuscular optimization
and cognitive enhancement. Mediated by GH and IGF-1 enhancement.

MAX NUTRITION

Whatcha
Eatin?
Teens: Understand the value of proper
nutrition, plus learn how to make smart
breakfast, lunch, and snacking choices.

BY ALISSA CARPIO

YOURE FORWARD-THINKING
and a go-getter, but you still
want to have fun. So eating
to stay fit means learning to
make smart choices with whats
available at school, as well as
planning ahead with some quick
and easy take-along snack and
meal options.
Your school cafeteria will probably
offer several meal options that you
can select in advance. Often, healthier
choices are marked to help you with
selections including fresh fruit and
vegetables, lean protein, and whole
grains. But that doesnt mean you
always have to select that food. By
learning the different types of foods
and how they work in your body,
you can choose the best foods at the
right time based on your lifestyle and
preferences.
46 WWW.MAXMUSCLE.COM

GET YOUR MACROS

First, you should know that a

truly balanced meal contains all
three macronutrients: a protein,
carbohydrate, and fat. All foods
provide energy from calories, which
help you function both physically
and mentally. Some nutrients are
denser in calories, like fat, so smaller
amounts will provide a greater source
of energy.
Protein is found mostly in animalbased foods, although nuts, beans,
and a few vegetables contain small
amounts of protein. Protein is
necessary to build and tone lean
muscle and for healthy skin, hair, and
nails. Any kind of meat, fish, eggs, or
dairy is filled with protein.
Carbohydrates provide energy to
your body, but are used up pretty
quickly, too. Carbohydrates include all
fruits and vegetables, and most shelfstable foods found in your pantry,
such as breads and cereals, rice,

SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER 2016

pasta, potatoes, crackers, and snack

foods. Carbs are probably the most
readily available food source and are
the easiest to store, pack, and take on
the go. But, they can be dangerous
too, as many contain lots of added
sugars, processed ingredients, and
salt. Carbs from whole food produce
is always the best choice, so breads,
cereals, pastas, and snack items
should be portion controlled for the
health and fitness-savvy teen by using
pre-packaged snack packs or small
bowls or baggies.
Dietary fats are an excellent source
of energy for both physical and mental
activities and should not be feared.
Fats dont cause the body to gain
fat; a surplus of calories and excess
sugars convert into stored body fat.
Fats are necessary for proper brain
and bodily functions, and give you
shiny and healthy looking hair, skin,
and nails. Fats in meals help you feel
fuller and more satisfied, so you dont

have to eat as often or ever feel as

though you are dieting.

BREAKFAST

So, youve got the basic knowledge.

Now youre ready to make smart, fit
choices! From the following school
menu* breakfast option, what do you
think would be the right items from
each group that will make a healthy,
balanced breakfast?
Choice of One
Breakfast Chicken on Croissant
Mini Pancake/Waffles
Pop Tarts
Cereal
Choice of Two
Fruit Juice
Fruit Cup
The following milk choices are
also available:
Low Fat White
Nonfat White
Nonfat Chocolate
Nonfat Strawberry
Answer: The healthiest breakfast
would be the Breakfast Chicken on
Croissant because it contains a quality
protein (chicken) and minimal added
sugars. All other choices have excess
sugar, empty calories, and negligible
protein. Out of the two fruit choices
and milk options, the best selection
would be a fruit cup and low fat white
milk. Fruit juice is high in empty,
processed sugars. Low fat white milk
is a better choice over nonfat milk
because it provides necessary fats in
small amounts. Both chocolate and
strawberry milk contain high amounts
of added sugars.
If you choose to eat breakfast at
home instead of at school, be sure
your meal contains protein and is
lower in sugar, otherwise youll feel
tired and sluggish as soon as you
begin your school day. Excellent
breakfast proteins include eggs,
yogurt with fruit, shake or smoothie
made with yogurt or protein powder,
cottage cheese with fruit, or a chicken
or egg breakfast burrito with shredded
cheese and salsa. If youre really
rushed, grab a fruit and nut bar or
granola bar (carbohydrates and fat
from nuts, fruit, and grains) with a
piece of string cheese and glass of low
fat milk (protein).

SCHOOL LUNCH

By mid-day, youve been hard at work

learning about the latest trigonometry
equation, biology concept, or checking
up on what your friends have been up
to on social media! In short, youre
hungry! But before you go and grab
that slice of pizza or ice cream bar,
fuel up with something healthy to give
you longer lasting energy.
What would you pick? Lets look at
a school lunch menu* and see what
choices there are
Choice of One
Primo Pizza with Buffalo Chicken
Chicken Nuggets and Roll
Fresh Olive Garden-style salad with
garlic breadstick
Yogurt and Granola
PB & J Sandwich

But, it contains no real protein source.

Plus, salad dressings often have as
much or more calories as junk food
choices. Chicken Nuggets would be a
good protein source, but the roll will
add processed carbohydrates. Yogurt
and granola are a healthy source of
protein and grains but also contain
added sugar. Still, any of these three
would be a balanced option. From the
choice of sides, cole slaw or glazed
carrot coins would contain less added
sugars and excess fats. Bushs Cajun
Beans contain a lot of added sugars.
Fried foods, such as shoestring fries,
contain excess processed fats. When
it comes to fruit and veggies, fresh is
always best because it cannot contain
any added sugars or preservatives.
Again, low fat milk is superior to
nonfat, chocolate, or strawberry milk.

PACKED LUNCH

Choice of Two
Shoestring Fries
Fresh Cole Slaw
Bushs Cajun Beans
Glazed Carrot Coins

If you prefer to pack, here are some

great bag-lunch options:

Choice of Two
Chilled Peaches
Fresh Fruit or Frozen Fruit
Answer: From the main lunch menu,
it may seem like the Olive Gardenstyle salad is the obvious best choice.

Lunch 1
Chicken or turkey sandwich with
lettuce, mayo or ranch and tomato
slices
Baby carrots and hummus or cottage
cheese
Handful of mixed nuts or trail mix
Lunch 2
Tuna wrap with mayo on whole
wheat or flatbread with lettuce
Fresh fruit salad or cup of grape
tomatoes
Small container Greek yogurt or
piece of string cheese
Apple with peanut/almond butter

AFTER-SCHOOL
SNACKING + ACTIVITY

Smarter Snacking
or Low-fat Popcorn
Plain
or popped cracker chips
Baked
crackers
Wheat
rice cakes
Flavored
Dark
chocolate
Frozen fruit bar
No sugar added ice cream or
frozen yogurt
Turkey, Beef, or Ostrich Jerky

*Virginia Beach City Public Schools breakfast and lunch menu for high school students.

When you get home from school and

youre tired and ready to relax, your
first thought might be to scour the
kitchen for a treat and plop down on
the sofa with your cell phone. But,
mindless eating is the most common
way of overeating. If you want a treat,
choose a pre-packaged option or
pour out a serving into a small bowl.
That way, you wont risk mindlessly
overeating. Keep yourself busy so you
dont have the urge to snack out of
boredom. After school is a great time
to get some exercise by going for a
walk or bike ride, grabbing a quick
workout, and/or playing or practicing
a sport. MS&F

pesto over cooked zoodle noodles, add

5 Must-Eat Foods for Kids

VARIETY OF FOODS BOOST HEALTH
COMING UP with healthy meals
for your kids doesnt have to
be a huge chore. Kids need a
variety of foods from the major
food groups fruits and veggies,
healthy protein, and whole
grains with smaller servings of
heart-healthy oils and dairy. Try
these must-eat foods to fuel up
your little ones with the major
macronutrients while delivering
a healthy dose of vitamins and
minerals.
Beef
Protein is vital to good nutrition,

containing amino acids the body

needs to build healthy skin, strong
bones and muscles, as well as to
transport other nutrients that our
bodies demand. Serving your kids lean
cuts of beef is a great way to deliver
protein to their diets. The National
Academies of Sciences recommends
that kids ages 4-18 get 10-30 percent
of their daily calories from protein.
In addition to protein, a study
of children and teens in
the U.S. has shown
that kids
depend on
lean beef to
obtain key
vitamins

BY KAREN MORSE, MPH

such as B12, B3, and B6 as well

as minerals such as iron and zinc.
Grass-fed beef is said to contain more
vitamin E, carotenoids like lutein
and beta-carotene, and omega-3
fatty acids than beef that has been
conventionally raised.

health of our guts in about 24 hours.
Try offering your little ones some of
these kid-friendly probiotic foods.
Blueberries: Kids love blueberries, and
these anthocyanin-rich berries dont
disappoint in the nutrient department.
Studies have found that blueberries
boost immunity and help maintain a
good balance of bacteria in the gut.
Kefir: Kefir is a fermented milk drink
that is easy to digest even for those
who are lactose intolerant. Its loaded
with probiotics, helping to keep your
childs digestive system running
smoothly. Some kids may not care for
the tangy taste of kefir. If this is the
case, whip up a smoothie with his or
her favorite fruits for a tasty treat.
Tempeh: Tempeh is a soy-based food
similar to tofu that is said to originate
from Indonesia. It is high in protein,
calcium, and fiber and is an excellent
probiotic food. Try serving your kids a
tempeh burger for an interesting twist
on lunch or cut into cubes and add to
your next stir fry.

Whole-Wheat Bread
While adults may be tempted to cut
out carbs to sculpt a lean physique, its
important to note that carbs are the
most important source of energy. As
you well know, not all carbs are created
equal. Offer your kids whole-wheat
bread and other whole grain goodies
like whole wheat pasta and brown rice
for more fiber and less sugar.
Whole wheat bread is a great source
of dietary fiber, which helps keeps
blood sugar levels stable and helps
lower cholesterol. The majority of
parents probably dont think about
high cholesterol as a problem for kids,
but you might be surprised at these
statistics. A 2014 study of more than
12,000 kids ages 9 to 11 found that
about one third of the kids had high
cholesterol and not all of the kids
were considered overweight or obese.
Whole wheat-containing foods are
also a good source of manganese,
a trace mineral that is important in
controlling blood sugar as well as
maintaining skin health.

Green Leafy Vegetables

Got a kid who loves broccoli? Youre in
luck! Getting kids to eat their veggies
is not always an easy task. Kids need
vegetables of all colors to meet their
daily vitamin and nutrient needs.
Green leafy vegetables are loaded with
nutrients such as vitamin A, vitamin
C, potassium, iron, vitamin K, and
calcium to name a few.

SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER 2016

If your child is a picky eater, try

experimenting with different veggies
until you find ones that he or she likes.
Ideas include spinach, kale, bok choy,
Brussels sprouts, and green beans. It
might also help if you let your child
pick out his or her own vegetables
when you are shopping together.
One sneaky solution is to add
greens such as spinach to homemade
juices or smoothies. Adding citrus and
other fruits make the greens taste less
bitter. Your child may enjoy this even
more if they consider it a special treat.

Strawberries
Like vegetables, your child needs to
consume a diet rich in fruits of all
colors. Deeply-colored fruits such
as strawberries are bursting with
antioxidants. One cup of strawberries
only contains seven grams of sugar
and delivers more than 100 percent of
your daily dose of vitamin C.
In addition to vitamin C,
strawberries also provide calcium for
bone growth and phosphorous for
bone development. Strawberries are a
good source of folate, which is needed
to maintain healthy red blood cells
so kids have the energy they need
to play and stay active. Folate is also
important in brain development.
Yogurt
According to nutrition experts at the
Harvard School of Public Health, kids
need a small serving of dairy in their
daily diets to help them meet their
calcium and vitamin D needs.
Plain yogurt is a great option for
your kids you can add your own
fresh fruit when serving as a snack to
cut down on the added sugar found in
fruit-containing yogurt varieties.
Meeting daily protein needs for kids
is tough. Just one 8-ounce serving
of yogurt contains the same amount
of protein as an egg and is usually a
much more appealing option. Blend up
yogurt with fresh fruit and fill popsicle
molds in advance for a super easy
afternoon snack or dessert. MS&F

ULTRA PREMIUM MULTI SOURCE PROTEIN!

SCIENCE ALERT - THE SECRET BEHIND POSITIVE NITROGEN BALANCE

Single source proteins are quickly absorbed into the bloodstream,

and provide only a short period of what is referred to as positive
nitrogen balance. This is the optimal state for muscle growth and
recovery. Even the highest quality whey isolate only maintains
positive nitrogen balance for a little over an hour. This can be
beneficial in some cases like immediately before or after a workout
but is not the most effective way to build lean muscle over time.
Multi-source protein blends have been clinically proven to be
superior to single source proteins because they elevate and maintain positive nitrogen balance for a much longer period of time
which equates to more lean muscle growth and better recovery.
maxpro Elite, is the ultimate multi-source protein, containing the
ideal ratio of the highest quality protein sources proven to provide
optimal muscle protein synthesis, promoting greater nitrogen
retention and superior results.

OPTIMIZE
YOUR

TRAINING
BY MATT COOPER, CFNC

ARE YOU EXERCISING to get in better shape? If

so, you are dedicating precious time to the gym or
some type of fitness program to get your results,
right? Heres the deal: if youre not fueling yourself
properly, you could be wasting your time to a certain
degree. You might feel exercising is sufficient
and it is a key component of health, for sure but
exercise without the proper nutrients is like running
your car on empty. How? Your body simply isnt
going to function properly, let alone all that well,if
youre not treating it right. In this case, that means
providing it with the correct nutrients during and
after a workout to optimize your training efforts.

Why should you care? This means

getting the results you want to
achieve, be it peak health, fat
loss, muscle gains, energy, athletic
performance, vitality, anti-aging, and
more! Getting the right nutrients
means starting with a proper
foundation a healthy diet provides.
But its imperative to ensure youre
supplementing properly as well. Max
Muscle Nutrition recommends the
combination of ARM and Pro BCAA
to get this fuel and optimize your
training!

PRO BCAAS

Taking amino acids during (or pre or

post-workout) training sessions is akin

(leucine, valine, and isoleucine) are

known to be highly concentrated in
muscles (35 percent) and have been
shown to serve as important fuel
sources for skeletal muscles during
periods of high-intensity exercise.
Users enjoy reduced recovery
windows, meaning it takes less time
for them to recoup and decreased
training-induced soreness.
One such customer is former
professional basketball player,
Gabriele Brusamarello, of Petaluma,
CA, who shops at Max Muscle North

for recovery and muscle growth, he
says. Or especially if I train fasted
to act as a muscle sparing tool. Its a

ARM

Max Muscles Anabolic Recovery

Matrix, better known as ARM, is
the perfect post-workout drink. The
elite product engineers that head
Max Muscle Nutritions Research and
Development Team went to work
in order to create a most favorable
blend of vital nutrients needed in
the post-workout/anabolic window,
a phrase coined for the time (often
cited as immediately post exercise,
all the way to an hour after) right
after your training session. They then
worked to consolidate these nutrients
into one convenient, powerful
product, and it has been a popular
staple of Max Muscles product line
ever since.
The science of recovery shows that
there are three critical requirements
for optimal muscle recovery and
repair following an intense exercise
session. First, is the replacement
of fluids and electrolytes. Second,
is the rapid replenishment of
muscle glycogen, and third is the
replacement of amino acids to
support the muscle
rebuilding process
and minimize muscle
protein breakdown.
ARM assists in
supplying key
ingredients that
support all three
critical requirements.
To support protein
synthesis and
nitrogen retention,
each serving of ARM
delivers 28 grams (56

percent Daily Value) of the highest

quality blend of whey protein isolate
(WPI) and whey protein concentrate
(WPC) available. To support glycogen
stores, ARM provides the ideal forms
and amounts of carbohydrates
to pack glycogen in muscles for
maximum recovery. ARM also supplies
proper electrolytes, additional amino
acids, and even creatine to boot.
Nick Harrison, a natural
bodybuilder, trainer, nutrition coach,
and franchisee of Max Muscle
Nutrition Pleasanton, recommends
ARM to his clients. Most people hit a
protein shake after they train and call
it good, says Harrison. ARM is truly
a complete post-workout product.
It really brings the body back to life
after training.
ARM was not just made with the
athlete in mind. In fact, it is an alllevels recovery supplement for both
men and women. Anyone seeking
optimal recovery from their workouts
should be using the ARM. ARM
contains several vital ingredients for
the bodys post-workout window and
these ingredients can be expensive
to buy separately. Even if you are
just taking a few of the products
separately, ARM immediately becomes
the most cost-effective solution for
your post-workout needs!
Return on investment is the right
way to view your time spent in the
gym. Ensure youre not spinning your
wheels and wasting valuable time by
properly resting and fueling your body
with the vital nutrients it needs. By
incorporating Pro BCAA and ARM, you
are priming yourself with key recovery
agents and factors for muscle growth!

Alleviate ExerciseInduced Central Fatigue

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of the combined
supplementation of BCAA, arginine, and citrulline on central fatigue in well-trained
taekwondo athletes after three simulated matches. Researchers from the Chinese
Culture University and National Taiwan University of Sport, Taiwan conducted a
double-blind randomized cross-over design involving 12 male Taekwondo athletes.
Each match contained three 2-minute rounds of high-intensity intermittent
exercise. At the end of the second match, either a BCAA, arginine, and citrulline
supplementation was consumed or the placebo. A validated taekwondo-specific
reaction test battery was used to measure the cognitive performance after each
match. Results showed significantly better performance and reduced fatigue
during the supplementation period. Researchers concluded that the combined
supplementation could alleviate the exercise-induced central fatigue in elite
athletes. (Chen IF, et al. J Int Soc Sports Nutr. 2016 Jul 13;13:28). MMSN Featured

Nitric Oxide Benefits

The present study conducted at Baylor

University in Waco, Texas set out to determine
the effectiveness of L-citrulline and Setria
glutathione (GSH) on markers indicative
of nitric oxide (NO) synthesis in humans.
Resistance-trained males were randomly
assigned to orally ingest either placebo or
L-citrulline (2 g/day)+ Setria GSH (200 mg/
day) for seven days, and then perform a
resistance exercise session involving three
sets of 10 reps max involving the elbow
flexors. Researchers found plasma guanosine
monophosphate (GMP), an intermediate that
promotes vasodilation, was increased. Plasma
nitrate and nitrite levels for L-citrulline+GSH
were significantly greater at 30 minutes
post exercise when compared to placebo.
Researchers concluded combining L-citrulline
with Setria glutathione augments increases in
nitrite and NO levels and extends vasodilation
in resistance exercise conditions. (McKinley-

Carbs = Good for Cyclists!

Researchers at the University of Vienna, Austria conducted a systematic

review and meta-analysis including MEDLINE, EMBASE, and the Cochrane
Collaboration. Sixteen of the 24 randomized controlled trials met the
objectives and were included in the systematic review. Researchers found
that carbohydrate supplementation was associated with significant benefits
in groups performing cycling time trials as compared to controls when
ingested carbohydrate concentrations of carbohydrates were between 6
and 8 percent. Likewise, mean power output was significantly increased
in cycling time, trial time groups measuring power output. Researchers
concluded a potential ergogenic benefit of carbohydrate supplementation,
especially in a concentration range between 6 and 8 percent when
exercising longer than 90minutes. (Pochmuller M, et al. J Int Soc Sports
Nutr. 2016 Jul 11;13:27). MMSN Featured Product: CarboMax

WHAT I LEARNED FROM BATTLING

EATING DISORDERS

EVERY DAY we are bombarded with pictures of people we

often perceive as perfect. And, we are constantly solicited

with fast, weight-loss remedies that will supposedly get us
our dream body, but can actually lead to various types of
disorders. After five-plus years of battling several eating
disorders, I committed to change, and here is what I can
tell you about my successful recovery:

3. Strong is beautiful! I encourage taking part in a

strength-training program. Becoming physically strong can
literally change who you are mentally and give you the
confidence you need to overcome many struggles. Committing
to fitness has vastly improved my life as I found my calling
as a personal trainer and fitness model. I was recently given
the opportunity to be a sponsored Team Max athlete and live
my dream of inspiring others to become better versions of
themselves.

2. Food is not the enemy! When food is abused and bad

habits are adopted, it turns into a vicious cycle, leading
to serious health issues. The proper nutritional regimen
nourishes our bodies and minds and provides the energy we
need to function at our best. Educating yourself on how to
consume goal specific portions and healthy alternatives will
get you on the track to success.

1. Dont get fixated on body image! Body dissatisfaction

is an epidemic in our image-obsessed culture. This can really
affect your attitude toward life and overrun you with negative
thoughts and feelings. You can harm relationships and miss
out on opportunities by wasting a lot of time and energy
obsessing over flaws. Learn to love yourself and embrace the
challenge of becoming a better version of yourself.

4. Patience is key! In this day and age, we want everything

NOW. But taking shortcuts with your health will only do you
harm. Its not a matter of changing your life all at once, its
about making better choices one day at a time. I coach my
clients to set three- to six-month goals. Starting out this
may seem long, but when making a life change, its just
a small part of your journey! Mistakes will happen along
the way; learn from them as you keep pushing forward.
The take-away: Unrealistic timelines and taking
shortcuts will leave you mentally and physically
drained. You will be right back where
you started, confused about how to

SCIENCE ALERT - THE SECRET BEHIND BCAA RATIOS

Branched-Chain Amino Acids or BCAAs have become all the craze for athletes looking to
improve performance but why are there so many different ratios? A common question asked is what
is the best ratio to be used in a BCAA blend? Is it 2:1:1, 5:1:1, 8:1:1 or 10:1:1?
The optimal ratio of the BCAA is 2:1:1 and the primary reason is that this is the ratio that naturally
occurs in foods, the ratio found in muscle tissue and the ratio supported by the majority of published
scientific studies on the benefits of BCAA supplementation for muscle growth, energy and fat loss.
The proper 2:1:1 represents the ratio of leucine:valine:isoleucine. Higher amounts of leucine in a
BCAA formula has not been shown in scientific studies to be any more beneficial than in the 2:1:1
ratio. In fact, higher leucine content may actually be detrimental in outcompeting valine and isoleucine
for absorption, assimilation into muscle tissues and function. Valine helps
p blunt fatigue
g during
g exercise
and isoleucine may provide benefits in
promoting fat burning during exercise.
SCIENTIFICALLY PROVEN
So why then do you see so many BCAA
blends on the market with modified ratios of
the BCAAs? The answer is simple it costs
less to make so they make more PROFIT off
of you!

2:1:1 RATIO!

Available in 8 MOUTHWATERING FLAVORS!

The bottom line is to stay with the natural

balance of the BCAA in the 2:1:1 ratio, the
optimal ratio that is supported by published
science for all types of exercise, muscle
growth, recovery and even fat loss. There are
no proven additional benefits of higher ratios
of leucine in addition to wasting money and
sabotaging the benefits.
