OBJECTIVE:
OutdoorEducationusesthenaturalenvironmenttohelpparticipantslearnexperientially,and
directexperienceisthefoundationforthelessonsinthisclass.Studentswillexploretheir
relationshiptonatureandtheimapctthattheyhaveontheirnaturalworld.Thiscoursewillfocus
onplacebasededucation,inquirybasedlearningandexperienceasalearningtool.
EXPECTATIONS:
Studentsareexpectedtoparticipatefullyandberespectfulatalltimesduringthis
course.Wewillbedoingmanyactivitiesthatrequireresponsibility,careandattention.
Studentswillneedtohaveapositivebehaviorandacademicrecordthroughouttheterm
inordertoattendthepossibleyearendoutdoortrip.
PartofOutdoorEducationislearninganappreciationforownershipandimpact.Student
enrolledinthisclasswillberesponsiblefortheimpactoftheiractionsonthelearningof
theirclassmatesandthemselves.Thereforestudentsareexpectedto:
Bepreparedforclass.Thismeansinsideandoutside!
Studentsaretobedressedappropriatelyforclass.Therefore,inwintermonths
studentswillberequiredtohaveahat,mittensorgloves,bootsandawinterjacket.
Snowpantswillbeanassetandwillberequiredonsomedays.Studentsshouldhave
alloftheseitemswiththemwhenwinterconditionsrequirethemthroughoutthe
semester.Studentswithoutproperclothingmaynotbeabletoparticipateinthe
assignedactivitiesthusaffectinghisorhermark.

Participation:OutdoorEducationisaHANDSONCOURSE.Assessmentwill
comelargelyfromparticipation,handsonactivities,groupworkandpersonal
involvement.Studentsshouldhaveapositiveoutlookaboutparticipation.
Studentswhodonotliketheoutdoorswillfindthisaspectchallengingasmost
dayswewillaimtobeoutside.
ActivitiesinthecourseARENOTOPTIONAL.Ifforanyreasonyoucannot
participatefully,pleasearrangetomeetwithyourinstructorinadvancetodiscuss
possiblesolutions.Adenialtoparticipatewillresultinapoorassessment.
Neartheendofthecourse,wewillbetakinganoutdoortripawayfromschool
(locationanddatesTBD).Thiswillbeatanextracostforstudentsduetothenature
ofthetrip.Itwillnotbeunreasonable,butpleaseknowthatwewillsupplementthe
tripwithcoursefees,fundraisingandothermethodsaswell.Pleasebeadvisedthat
thisisanOPTIONALtripandnotrequiredforalloutdooredstudentstoattend.This
tripisforstudentswhoareingoodstandingwiththeirinstructorsandadministration.
Nostudentwillbeinvitedtoattendthisexcursioniftheyarebehindincoursework
foranyclassoradministrationadvisesusnottoallowthemtojoin.
