How often a parent helps with homework
is strongly tied to the school year of the
child; parents of younger children help more
frequently than those in later school years.
Research shows that pupils tend to hold positive
views about homework, seeing it as important
in helping them to do well at school.
Read together (in any language)
Reading is one of the foundations of all
education, and you can make a big difference
by reading and talking about books and stories
with your children. Reading with children is
the best way to turn them on to reading. But
this doesnt mean that you should be forcing
them to sound out words. Instead of focusing
on teaching your children the mechanics of
reading, teach them to love reading. Make
reading fun and enjoyable!
5. If youre a parent with a little more time to

Help the school make good decisions.
Dont forget organizations like the PTA and
PTO are there to provide you with decisionmaking power. Such groups give you a chance
to discover how school administrators view the
goals of the school and to express your view
of what the schools goals should be. One of
the best ways for you to affect your childs
education is by helping to determine school
policies.
To sum-up, when schools engage families
in ways that improve learning and support
parent involvement at home and school,
students make greater gains. When schools
build partnerships with families that respond to
parent concerns, honor their contributions, and
share decision-making responsibilities, they are
able to sustain connections that are aimed at
improving student achievement.

PEOPLE of the North were not left out as they

celebration after the success in Nadi and Suva.
People from all walks of life braved the long

During the celebrations in Suva, Fiji Rugby

THE tough training the players endured in preparation for the RioOlympics Sevens tournament had set the platform for what was to be
expected at the Deodoro Stadium.
Celebrity Fiji 7s coach Benjamin Christian Ryan, while delivering
his address during the celebrations in Suva, revealed that players like
Emosi Mulevoro, Sevuloni Mocenacagi, Aliferet Veitokani, Nemani
Nagusa, Isake Katonibau, Pio Tuwai, Josua Vici and even Jarred
Hayne provided the stiffest of tests for the 13-players who were later
selected to represent the country in Brazil.
Ryan made this comment after seeing former national reps
including Nasoni Roko showing their support for the team on the road
side while the team was on its way from Nausori Airport to the Grand
Pacific Hotel in Suva.
Likewise, if it wasnt for those players who missed out, we
wouldnt have won the gold medal because the seventeen matches
we had at Uprising Beach Resort were all bone on bone, full on, was
harder than any Olympic game we played. And that was the major
difference on why the team achieved its goal in the last few weeks.
The English man said the 12-players will not only become role models
but they will need to set good example to other Fijians who will get
inspired by their achievement.
When you have an Olympic gold medal put across you, its just
not a one off thing. Its a responsibility. When we went across to Rio
we had no gold medals on this Island. But now we have 12. With
12, comes twelve-role models, 12-people that can help set a legacy,
12-people who can help to inspire the youth of Fiji, 12-people who can
tell you all that anything is possible with hard work, with ability and
team work and the boys have the real chance to do all those things.
With that gold medal, they have that responsibility that has been
given to them to add value, to inspire, not just in sports but in every area
of life where Fijians can stand tall. And today isnt about a celebration
for the Fiji 7s team; its about being a proud Fijian, by supporting the
team, being the eighth man, its shows that a small Island can do huge
things, Ryan added.
He also had a few words for the Fijiana side who he said have set
the standard for women in sports in Fiji.
Our netballers had always been outstanding and now we have the
Fijiana side that finished eighth at the Olympics and that it could be
their story in 2020 in Japan.

THE huge men in the low numbers made the difference for the Fiji
7s team during the Olympic Games 7s tournament at the Deodoro
Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Legendary sports broadcaster Keith Quinn did not mince his words
when he described jersey numbers 2, 3 and 5 as the game beakers for
the Ben Ryan coached side in the final against Great Britian.
Im talking about Jasa Veremalua (2), Semi Kunatani (3) and
Leone Nakarawa (5), the forwards, who came make such a difference
in crucial matches like this, Quinn remarked 55seconds into the first
half when captain Osea Kolinisau stretched his arm to touchdown for
the opening try in the corner despite the tackle by his opposite Tom
Mitchell.
When they get the ball they make those hard hits in the middle,
give it out to the flying backs or even score themselves.
Quinn added when Vatemo Ravouvou scored the fifth try for Fiji
to impose a commanding 29-0 lead at the breather, What the Fijians
are doing to rugby in the Olympics is just wonderful to behold. We are
seeing sevens at its very best. They are doing it against an accomplished
team (GB) who fully merits to be in the gold medal match. But this is
fantastic example of what sevens rugby is supposed to be.
In the final itself, seven different players scored a try each for the
43-7 win. This included Kolinisau, Jerry Tuwai, Veremalua, Nakarawa,
Ravouvou, Tuisova and replacement Viliame Mata.
