55th TFL Sugar Fiesta

Sanjay Goundar

THE 55th edition of the Telecom Fiji

Limited sponsored Sugar Festival
will once create a hive of activities
in Lautoka from September 10.
Churchill Park carnival grounds
will again be the venue of this one of
the most looked forward carnival.
However, keeping in mind the
massive
destruction
Tropical
Cyclone Winston caused to most
parts of the western division, the
Sugar Festival Association has
cancelled charity fundraising this

year.
According
to
Association
President Bijesh Chand because
none of the beauty contestants
will be involved in the charity
fundraising drive there will be no
Miss Charity Queen this year.
However, Chand informed that
with Miss Sugar 2016, the Miss
Personality Crown winner this year
will be additionally rewarded with a
return trip to either Australia or New
Zealand.
So whoever wins the Miss
Personality crown this year will be

very fortunate to get a overseas trip

together with Miss Sugar.
Whatever money the sponsors
of the contestants will provide will
be used to cater for their costumes
and other expenses during the
weeklong festival.
Along with cancelling the
charity fundraising we are not
having our annual festival magazine
and lottery ticket fundraising this
year.
Our association is very mindful
of the hardship still faced by many
of our citizens including the business
sector since TC Winston struck the

country.
Chand, however, pointed out that
there will be no shortfall in creating
a spectacular festive atmosphere in
the city.
He revealed that the flea market
will be much bigger with more
stalls during the festival this year
providing more buying opportunity
for the public.
Meanwhile, nine beautiful girls
will battle in out for the Miss Sugar
and Miss Personality crown this
year and Miss Sugar 2016 will later
represent the city in the Miss Fiji
Pageant.

Cubs Challenged at National Camboree

Zareena Bi

MORE than 500 Cubs from schools all around

the country at the 9th Fiji National Camboree
were challenged to follow the footsteps of
the Sevens Rugby Olympic heroes to become
successful in life.
The challenge was thrown to them by the
President of the Republic of Fiji and Chief
Scout, Major General (retired) Joji Konrote at
the opening of the National Camboree together
with the marking of the 100th Anniversary of
Cub Scouting in the World on August 15 at
Drasa Primary School in Lautoka.
Our Sevens Rugby Olympic heroes have
proven to our beloved nation and particularly to
young boys like you that, there is no substitute
to hard work as the key to success.
This is the challenge I want to leave with
you our cubs and all youths of Fiji. If you
remain focused and persevere in what you want
to achieve in life, nothing becomes impossible.
You are Fijis future and you can continue to
demonstrate to the world that Fiji can be as
good as any other country in the world.
The President also encouraged the Cubs to
continue to learn and improve their skills and
performance for their transition into becoming
Scouts, Scout Masters and Leaders of the
Movement tomorrow.
To you our young Cubs of the Movement,
you will find that life can be a very different
experience because within the Organization

be part of and work together successfully as a

These are traits and qualities which
will undoubtedly assist you as you mature

He added that Camborees are wonderful

LAUTOKAS Churchill Park will remain
closed for public for the rest of this year.
This means that the scheduled Court Inter
District Soccer Tournament and Chow Games
will not be held in Lautoka this year.
LCC Chief Executive Officer Jone
Nakauvadra has confirmed that it will now take
another six to seven months before Churchill

Park will finally open for the public.

Its unfortunate and we apologize to
members of the public who were looking
forward to major sporting events in Lautoka
later this year.
As planned we will not be able to get the
ground ready by October or even December
this year, he revealed.
Nakauvadra informed that the delay is
due to the decision undertaken by the council

upon consultation with the Ministry of Local
Government to construct a new 1000 seating
capacity concrete pavilion.
He stressed that to properly cater for the
crowd during major tournaments Churchill
Park needs proper seating facilities.
We have erected the embankment in place
of pavilion C but that is not enough compared
to the enhanced standard of Churchill Park.
The 400 metre synthetic track has already

been installed which now gives Churchill Park

a completely new look.
The council will be spending around
$6million to $7million to construct a brand
new concrete stadium in the next 6-7 months.
He revealed that that the new stadium will
be constructed beside the current main concrete
pavilion towards the back gate of Churchill
Park.

areas that need the assistance.
For those communities that have not

The Need for Parental Involvement in Childrens

Education in Fiji

Ravinesh Prasad

Lecturer in Education
School of Education
College of Humanities and Education
Fiji National University

YOUR child goes off to school every day,

and you probably see your primary role in
this routine as getting your child to school
well groomed, well fed, and on time. If youre
leaving education up to the school, then, youre
overlooking the most important role you can
play! Your involvement in the childs school
experience could mean the difference between
success and failure for the child. Most children
have two main educators in their lives their
parents and teachers. Parents are the prime
educators until the child attends an early years
setting or starts school and they remain a major
influence on their childrens learning throughout
school and beyond. The school and parents both
have crucial roles to play. There is no universal
agreement on what parental involvement is, it
can take many forms; from involvement at the
school (as a governor, helping in the classroom
or during lunch breaks) through to reading to
the child at home, teaching songs or nursery
rhymes and assisting with homework.
Whether it is attending a school concert,
scouts or guides camping, cheering on a school
team, or participating in community events
and meetings planned by the school, parent
involvement in school activities can foster a
sense of togetherness within the school. It can
build stronger relationships between teachers
and parents, and provide an opportunity for
parents to connect with and support each
other. School-based activities may not have
a direct impact on studentachievement, but
they can be a fun and engaging way to build
a stronger school community. When you can,
take advantage of the opportunity to participate
in school events to show your support for your
childrens school.
Why is parental involvement important?
According to Flouri, E. (2006), parental
involvement with children from an early age
has been found to equate with better outcomes
(particularly in terms of cognitive development).
What parents do is more important than who
they are for childrens early development i.e.
home learning activities undertaken by parents
is more important for childrens intellectual and
social development than parental occupation,
education or income.
The impact of family learning on childrens
achievement

The benefit of learning across the family is

now well documented. Family learning broadly
refers to approaches which engage parents and
children jointly in learning. This can include
family literacy, numeracy programmes to
improve the basic skills of parents and the early
literacy of children which may include joint
parent/child sessions to support early reading
skills.

The five key things that parents can do to help

ensure their childrens success are outlined as
follows:
1. Busy, busy? Its okayhome is the best
place for you to make a difference
Sit with your child while he or she does
homework. Just your physical presence helps
the child fight restlessness and concentrateswell.
Being able to discuss the work with the parent
makes homework less frustrating when the
child is doing something challenging and even
more exciting when your child is working on
something interesting. Let the child see you
reading, and read to young children whenever
possible. This one activity can be essential to
your childs academic success. Achievement in
all subjects improves with good reading skills.
Talk about school
It sounds simple, but its an important part
of getting involved with your childs education.
Find out what subjects he/she likes or dislikes.
Find out whats difficult in class, and talk
about ways to make school easier and more
interesting. Ask them to bring home school
bulletins. Reading pamphlets, newsletters, and
flyers not only keeps you up to date on school
events, it gives you a chance to discusswith
your child about what goes on at school. Talk
with your children about whats happening at
school activities, programs and what they are

learning. Surprisingly, this has a greater impact

on academic achievement than monitoring
homework, being at home after school for
your kids, limiting the time they are allowed to
watch TV or go out during the week.
Use your telephone
A lot of parents are simply too busy to
participate in school activities as much as they
would like. If youre one of these busy parents,
dont forget that a call to a teacher or Head
Teacher goes a long way in demonstrating your
concern about your childs school experience.
School staff will take notice of your interest.
2. Have high expectations
Let your children know that you think
it is important that they do well in school.
High parental expectations have the greatest
impact on student achievement. When parents
consistently express belief in their childrens
potential and tell their kids that they expect
them to succeed academically, students do
better.
3. Help them develop a positive attitude
towards learning and good work habits
Research shows that the greatest influence
you can have on your kids chances for success
in school lie in how you influence their attitudes,
their sense of personal competence, and their
work habits, including persistence, seeking
help, and planning. So rather than trying to
directly teach your children, the focus should
be on helping them handle distractions and
crises of confidence.Praise them for effort and
persistence and demonstrate a positive attitude
about school as a whole. Bit by bit, these are the
attributes that will build solid foundations for
ongoing success.
4. Parental involvement in homework and

CITY STAR - THE COMMUNITY NEWSPAPER FROM LAUTOKA

reading
How often a parent helps with homework
is strongly tied to the school year of the
child; parents of younger children help more
frequently than those in later school years.
Research shows that pupils tend to hold positive
views about homework, seeing it as important
in helping them to do well at school.
Read together (in any language)
Reading is one of the foundations of all
education, and you can make a big difference
by reading and talking about books and stories
with your children. Reading with children is
the best way to turn them on to reading. But
this doesnt mean that you should be forcing
them to sound out words. Instead of focusing
on teaching your children the mechanics of
reading, teach them to love reading. Make
reading fun and enjoyable!
5. If youre a parent with a little more time to
spare
Help the school make good decisions.
Dont forget organizations like the PTA and
PTO are there to provide you with decisionmaking power. Such groups give you a chance
to discover how school administrators view the
goals of the school and to express your view
of what the schools goals should be. One of
the best ways for you to affect your childs
education is by helping to determine school
policies.
To sum-up, when schools engage families
in ways that improve learning and support
parent involvement at home and school,
students make greater gains. When schools
build partnerships with families that respond to
parent concerns, honor their contributions, and
share decision-making responsibilities, they are
able to sustain connections that are aimed at
improving student achievement.

ECE a cornerstone to
success
citystarnews@kaiviti.com

Zareena Bi

EARLY Childhood Education (ECE) is

a cornerstone to the success of the Fijian
Education system and I am profoundly ecstatic
that we are all collaborating to reminisce on our
accomplishments and echo greater awareness
and development of this important sector.
These sentiments were echoed by the
Minister for Education, Heritage and Arts Dr.
Mahendra Reddy at the launch of this years
Early Childhood Education Week which was
celebrated from August 1-5.
Our Prime Minister, Hon. Bainimarama,
has stated long back that the nature of future
Fiji will be determined by how we nurture and
educate our children now.
Hon. Prime Minister is determined to
deliver a knowledge based society where people
having knowledge of all factors of production
and aspects of life in the society will rise above
variables of ethnicity, religion, class systems
and make decisions based on logic, reasoning
and analytical skills.
The Minister informed that the Ministry of
Education over the last two years has invested
ceaselessly to bringing about the highest levels
of quality to all aspects of the Fijian Education
Sector.
He added that as such the theme for this
years Early Childhood Education Week which

is Investing in Early Childhood Development

and Care for Quality Primary Education, is
aptly chosen as it also reflects the Ministrys
action plan to venture robustly towards quality.
Quality output at the national level requires
quality inputs, quality service delivery and
for this, we need a mindset pegged firmly on
quality always thinking big.
Through the Free Education initiative, we
are now equipping all ECE centers to have the
best facilities available for the children.
Meanwhile, all ECE Centers and schools
were requested to organize class based and
school based activities on the theme and
ensuring parental involvement with suggested
activities like an organized march for the
opening or closing, art and craft, sports,
gardening, character parades and other such
interesting actions.
During the week it was common to see
parents and children dressed in same colors
on respective days and enjoying the activities
together. Schools also invited groups form
organizations like the fire department, the
police dog unit team and road safety officers
to enhance the knowledge of the students and
parents.

President remembers past heroes

Maika Kasami

FIJI had erupted in joy when a man with

one leg vaunted over a pole at the London
Paralympics and won Gold. And in doing so,
not only lifted our spirits but showed every
Fijian that disability is no barrier to achieving
your dreams.
Four years on, that man is now the Assistant
Minister for Youth and Sports the honorable
Iliesa Delana.
President of the Republic of Fiji, His
Excellency Major General (Retd) Jioji Konrote
in his address to honor the Fiji 7s team gold
medal win in Brazil said the nation have had

many homecomings over the years with some

being somber, as when our fallen in the various
theatres of battle or peacekeeping have been
borne home to be laid to rest in the nation they
loved.
And some have been very joyful, as when
our sporting heroes have returned having
excelled in international competition. And in
doing so, have fired the spirits and imaginations
of every Fijian.
Major General Konrote also recalled the
1997 and 2005 sevens world cups wins led by
the world sevens maestro Waisale Serevi as
memorable moments that have been etched into
the sporting history.

But now Fiji as a nation has returned home

from the summer Olympic Games with the
highest accolades.
And this time we have been showered
with Gold as our Rugby Sevens team brings
home the first medals that Fiji has ever won at a
summer Olympics. You have brought us honour
and more global attention than at any other time
in our history.
Apart from the $30,000 each presented by
the State, coach Ben Ryan was honored with
the highest award to a non-Fijian, the highest
award in our system of honors, the Companion
of the Order of Fiji while the players were
pinned with the second highest award Officer

of the Order of Fiji.

His Excellency reminded the players that
the achievement cannot be a one of and we
cannot afford to be complacent.
To avoid it need proper leadership, we
need discipline and we need consistency. We
should invest as much as we can in training the
young players who will form the nucleus of our
future campaigns in international competition.
The Rugby Sevens is our Game. So let us bring
together the Government and private sector to
start planning for our next assault as soon as
these celebrations end.

WE will have a fight on our hands when we

medal win in Tokyo, Japan 2020.
These were the words of His Excellency
Major General (Retd) Jioji Konrote during
the official address during the celebrations at
the ANZ Stadium in Suva.
And be rest assured that we will have

a real fight on our hands to retain our crown

as World Champions, if we are to win Gold
again at the next Olympics in Tokyo, Japan, in
four years time.
To avoid this being a one-off, we
cannot afford to be complacent. We need, if
anything, to work even harder. Above all, we
need proper leadership, we need discipline
and we need consistency, President Konrote
said.

He said we should invest as much as we

can in training the young players who will
form the nucleus of our future campaigns in
international competition. The Rugby Sevens
is our Game.
Meanwhile, the victorious members of the
Fiji 7s team received $30,000 each
President Konrote said Fiji may not be
wealthier compared to other nations but we
were able to afford.

It may not be what wealthier nations are

able to afford. But it is a substantial sum in
Fijian terms. And it is a symbolic gesture that
we understand will be accompanied by further
contributions from the private sector.
So let us bring together the Government
and private sector to start planning for our next

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama told

the people of the north that the gold medal

win in Rio is a milestone achievement in the
development of our nation.
Bainimarama said it is a great day to also
celebrate the achievement of the players who
have links to Vanua Levu.
Fiji 7s captain Osea Kolinisau apologised
on behalf of the players who could not be part
of the celebration.
He said some players are finalising their
contracts while others will be returning to their
clubs soon.
Kolinisau in address said he was happy
when he was informed that there was also
going to be a Special Fiji 7s Gold medal win

He was happy about traveling to the north
because of his maternal links to Macuata.

WE are finally showing the promise as a nation
that most of us of a certain age always knew
was there. But which we were squandering by
not being able to work together as a team.
Those were the words Prime Minister
Voreqe Bainimarama in his official address
during the Olympic gold medal victory national
celebrations at the ANZ Stadium in Suva.
Bainimarama revealed telling young
people in Nadi a day earlier that, You are all

very lucky not only to see Fiji win Gold at the

Olympics but to be living in a golden age, 46
years after Independence.
He said like a rugby side that just cant get
its act together, Fiji kept dropping the ball.
Just as an opportunity presented itself, just
when we were starting to play as a team to build
our nation, we blew it. Arguments, Conflict,
Coups. Our differences rising to the surface
when the things that bound us together were far
more important.
And like a rugby side that languishes

at the bottom of the points table because of
indiscipline, we failed to reach our full potential.
It wasnt as if we didnt have good players.
We did. But some people simply werent
team players. They were more concerned with
individual performance. Grabbing the ball for
themselves, not passing it to others so that we
could put points on the board for the whole
team and storm to victory together.
Bainimarama said, We have put those
years behind us. Team Fiji is finally getting
its act together. On the rugby field and as a

nation. And that is why today is cause for real

celebration.
Because it is as much a celebration of our
recent success as a nation as it is about our
success in Rio. Finally, every player is getting
their fair share of the ball. The chance to score
for themselves and the team.
We are all Fijians. Everyone belongs.
Everyone is part of Team Fiji. And the benefits
of teamwork are finally coming our way as a
nation.

THE tough training the players endured in preparation for the RioOlympics Sevens tournament had set the platform for what was to be
expected at the Deodoro Stadium.
Celebrity Fiji 7s coach Benjamin Christian Ryan, while delivering
his address during the celebrations in Suva, revealed that players like
Emosi Mulevoro, Sevuloni Mocenacagi, Aliferet Veitokani, Nemani
Nagusa, Isake Katonibau, Pio Tuwai, Josua Vici and even Jarred
Hayne provided the stiffest of tests for the 13-players who were later
selected to represent the country in Brazil.
Ryan made this comment after seeing former national reps
including Nasoni Roko showing their support for the team on the road
side while the team was on its way from Nausori Airport to the Grand
Pacific Hotel in Suva.
Likewise, if it wasnt for those players who missed out, we
wouldnt have won the gold medal because the seventeen matches
we had at Uprising Beach Resort were all bone on bone, full on, was
harder than any Olympic game we played. And that was the major
difference on why the team achieved its goal in the last few weeks.
The English man said the 12-players will not only become role models
but they will need to set good example to other Fijians who will get
inspired by their achievement.
When you have an Olympic gold medal put across you, its just
not a one off thing. Its a responsibility. When we went across to Rio
we had no gold medals on this Island. But now we have 12. With
12, comes twelve-role models, 12-people that can help set a legacy,
12-people who can help to inspire the youth of Fiji, 12-people who can
tell you all that anything is possible with hard work, with ability and
team work and the boys have the real chance to do all those things.
With that gold medal, they have that responsibility that has been
given to them to add value, to inspire, not just in sports but in every area
of life where Fijians can stand tall. And today isnt about a celebration
for the Fiji 7s team; its about being a proud Fijian, by supporting the
team, being the eighth man, its shows that a small Island can do huge
things, Ryan added.
He also had a few words for the Fijiana side who he said have set
the standard for women in sports in Fiji.
Our netballers had always been outstanding and now we have the
Fijiana side that finished eighth at the Olympics and that it could be
their story in 2020 in Japan.

Legendary sports broadcaster Keith Quinn did not mince his words

Im talking about Jasa Veremalua (2), Semi Kunatani (3) and

in crucial matches like this, Quinn remarked 55seconds into the first
half when captain Osea Kolinisau stretched his arm to touchdown for
the opening try in the corner despite the tackle by his opposite Tom
Mitchell.
When they get the ball they make those hard hits in the middle,
give it out to the flying backs or even score themselves.
Quinn added when Vatemo Ravouvou scored the fifth try for Fiji
to impose a commanding 29-0 lead at the breather, What the Fijians
are doing to rugby in the Olympics is just wonderful to behold. We are
seeing sevens at its very best. They are doing it against an accomplished
team (GB) who fully merits to be in the gold medal match. But this is
fantastic example of what sevens rugby is supposed to be.
In the final itself, seven different players scored a try each for the
43-7 win. This included Kolinisau, Jerry Tuwai, Veremalua, Nakarawa,
Ravouvou, Tuisova and replacement Viliame Mata.

MAIKA KASAMI

NATIONAL team golfer Olaf Allen Junior took out the 80th Tiffanys of Canada Lautoka Open Golf Championship
after beating fellow national reps Anuresh Chandra and Asish Kumar to claim top honours.
Allen recorded 105 to win by a single shot.
The Suva based Allen had first tasted success back in 2002.
For the records on the honours board, this was his second LGC Open title.
Top favourites in Roneel Prakash, Zabir Ali and defending champion James Krishna all failed to match Allen.
Allen said he was proud to win again at the Golf Link course after as many years.
For me this course, fairways and greens was the best ever and Im happy to take the title away from Lautoka.
The young Rizwan Hussein won the B-grade with sponsor Mahendra Gopal claiming the C-grade title.
Chairman of Trustees Raymond Singh heaped praises on Gopal and his family for providing such a lucrative sponsorship
with over 50-major prizes together with the sponsors T-shirts and lunch.

Waqa, who is a caddy at the Fiji Golf Club scored even par 103 in
the top flight.
The 24-year old who is unemployed and earns money from
carrying golf bags at the Vatuwaqa Course; beat an elite field which
included national rep Roneel Prakash, Asish Kumar, Olaf Allen Junior

The 24-year-old won by seven strokes from Kumar.
Being level with Prakash on 71 after 18 holes, Waqa fired his game up
in the finishing nine holes.
Waqa said he lost to Allen Jr at the Fiji Amateur Championship

Fiji a place to invest

AUGUST

THE gold medal win in Rio has promised more

investment in Fiji.
Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama in
his address to the nation to commemorate the
Olympic win by our Fiji 7s team will see more
jobs being created and more potential markets
for Fijian Made products and services.
He said the possibilities for growth - for
improving our standard of living were already
healthy.
But thanks to this team and its achievement,
they have now been taken to another level. So
Team Fiji is starting to play as it should give
everyone on a level playing field a go. And as
we score more points for our nation, we are
determined to continue to leave no-one behind.
We are taking the marginalized, the elderly,
the sick and the disabled with us. Doing more
to protect the most vulnerable members of our
society, including our women and children.
Because like the members of a rugby team, we
need to look out for each other, care for each
other, Bainimarama said.
He added that before the victory in Rio, Fiji
was already in the throes of the longest running
period of economic growth in our history
seven straight years of expansion.
We were already attracting record numbers
of international visitors, record investment,
and more engagement with the world than ever
before.
And here in Fiji, we were already
beginning to use our increasing prosperity to
improve the lives of those among us who are
less fortunate.

The first social security pensions to ever

be paid in Fiji. The really exciting thing about
this victory in Rio is that we have suddenly
been given a huge boost. A much greater

international profile. More people around the

world coming to appreciate the Fijian story.
More people looking at Fiji as a place to visit.
