1 Scope
This procedure describes the method for Magnetic Particle Examination of ferromagnetic
castings with yoke magnetization in accordance with NEN-EN 1369. Welds shall be tested
in accordance with QC-C-040. (MT on welds acc. ASME V)
This wet method can be used for either intermediate- or final examination.
The extent and time of examination are detailed in the Project Quality Plan and/or
Inspection & Test Plan.

2 Equipment and Consumables

2.1 Equipment
The equipment to be used shall be an AC yoke magnet with a lifting power of at least 45 N
at the maximal pole-spacing used during inspection. Verification of conformance to lifting
power requirements shall be performed at the start of each shift prior to testing.

2.2 Detecting media

2.3 Wet particle method

Wet magnetic ink, test medium MR Chemie.
type MR76S, color black, maximum surface temperature 57C, or equivalent.
As recommended by the manufacturer, the concentration shall fall within the range 1,2 to
2,4 ml per 100 ml oil.
or
Wet magnetic ink, test medium Magnaflux.
type 14HF, UV, maximum surface temperature 57C, or equivalent.
As recommended by the manufacturer, the particle concentration shall fall within the
range 0,1- to 0, 5 ml per 100 ml oil.
The concentration of the ink is checked and recorded before initial use of a batch.

2.4 Contrast Aid Paint

A quick drying contrast paint shall only be used for examination with the color contrast.
The examination surface shall be coated with a thin layer of white nonmagnetic
temporarily coating, to create a better contrast; procedure qualification test shall be
carried out.

3 Personnel
All personnel performing Magnetic Particle Examination shall be qualified and certified
according to EN 473/PCN or EN 473 / SNT-TC-1A, level II or level III.
Note:
Personnel qualified and certified according to EN 473 / SNT-TC-1A level I, are permitted
to performing Magnetic Particle Examination, only under supervision of level II or level III
qualified personnel. Interpretations and evaluation of indications shall be performed by
qualified/certified NDE personnel with the status of level II of III in this method.

4 Surface preperation
The surface to be examined and all adjacent areas within 25 mm of the area of interest
shall be dry and free of dirt, oil, grease, loose oxide or scale, visual defects, or any other
foreign matter that could interfere with the examination.
Light dressing is permitted where this is necessary to aid interpretation of MPE
indications.

5 Time of inspection
Final examination shall be carried out after Heat treatment and final machining, unless
stated otherwise in the ITP.

6 Examination
Examination shall be performed by the continuous method, that is: the magnetizing
current remains on while the examination medium is being applied and the surface
inspected while excessive examination medium flows off and the magnetizing current
remains on.
At least two separate examinations shall be performed on each area. During the second
examination, the lines of magnetic flux shall be approximately perpendicular to those used
during the first examination, with a maximum deviation of 30.
All examination shall be conducted with at least 10% overlap to assure 100% coverage at
the required sensitivity.
A Dr. Berthold indicator or Burmah Castrol flux indicator shall be used to verify the
adequacy and direction of the magnetizing field.
For the color contrast method the area under inspection shall be evenly illuminated at a
level of not less than 1000 lx.
If lamps are used they should not beamed directly into the eyes of the inspector.

6.1 Specific instructions for the Ultraviolet method

Light as mentioned below shall be measured prior to testing with a Levy Hill MkVI
combined UV Radiometer and White Light Photometer, or equivalent. This meter will be
yearly calibrated according ISO 3059 for UV Radiometer and White Light according
BS667. Calibration will be done, yearly by a certified third party and recorded.
Background light: During fluorescent the background light intensity shall be below 20 lux
in the darkened area.
Before inspection and/or evaluation the inspector shall take sufficient time for his eyes to
adjust to the different circumstances concerning light strength.
Ultraviolet Light: The area under inspections shall be evenly illuminated at a level not less
than 1000 W/cm. Prior to each shift the black light will be measured and recorded. If UV
lamps are used they should not beam directly into the eyes of the inspector. The operator
shall wear safety glasses to protect his eyes from UV radiation.

7 Evaluation
7.1 Definitions

Linear indications are those indications in which the length is more than three
times the width. We call these indications LM. (L for linear, M for magnetic)

Rounded indications are indications that are circular or elliptical shape, where the
length is equal to or less than three times its width. We call these indications SM.
(S for surface, M for magnetic)

Intermittent and aligned indications shall be treated as linear indications.

Non-relevant indications may be due to spurious effects, such as magnetic

writing, changes in section, or the boundary between materials of different
magnetic properties.

Non relevant indications may mask relevant indications. Where this is suspected,
the surface subject to inspection will be dressed or an alternative inspection
method shall be used (i.e. liquid Penetrant inspection).

7.2 Remedial grinding

Suspect areas or areas with unacceptable indications may be slightly grind, within the
specification limits of profile and thickness and shall be re-examined.
Areas, which require welding in order to be made visually acceptable after removal of
flaws, shall be reported as unacceptable.

9 Acceptance Criteria
9.1 Severity levels
9.1.1 General
The severity levels are defined depending on the types of indications.

9.2 Non-Linear indications

For the non linear indications, the severity levels (see table 2) are defined by:
The length (largest dimension) L1 of the smallest indication to be taken into
account;
If applicable, the maximum total surface area of the indications in a given surface
(the frame 105 x 148mm corresponds to the ISO format A6);
The maximum length L2 of the indications.

9.3 Linear and aligned indications

9.3.1 General
For the linear and aligned indications the severity levels (see table 3) are defined by:
The length (largest dimension) L1 of the smallest indication taken into account;
The maximum length L2 of the linear and aligned indications;
The sum of the lengths of the linear and aligned indications exceeding the length
L1 in the frame of 105 x 148mm.

9.3.2 Section thickness type

Three section thickness types are specified (see table 3)
a. t < 16mm;
b. 16mm < t < 50mm;
c. t > 50mm
where t is the section thickness.

9.3.3 Selection of severity level

The severity levels shall be selected from tables 2 and/or 3 in conjunction with, if
necessary, the reference figures as given in attachments A and B. The reference figures
are drawn to a scale of 1:1 and are examples.
Table 2 and attachment A correspondents to non-linear indications (isolated) (SM).
Table 3 and attachment B correspondents to linear (LM) indications and aligned (AM)
indications1.
The choice of the reference figure depends on the section thickness.
1

It should be noted that several equivalent severity levels defined by table 3 are represented by the same
reference figure as shown in table 4. In certain cases, the equivalence of the figure is only approximate because
of slight differences in the parameters in table 3. In such cases the equivalences are indicated by 1) in table 4.

9.3.4 Designation of several severity levels

The requirements in the order or in the specifications shall conform to the terminology
used in this standard.
Examples of correct terminology are given below:

non-linear indications, level 2 : SM 2

linear and aligned indications, level 5 : LM 5c/AM 5c

Note: c in LM 5c means: the section thickness type t is greater then 50mm.

9.4 Classification of the indications and interpretation of the results

9.4.1 Classification of the indications using table 2 and 3

9.4.1.1 General
In order to classify a discontinuity, it is necessary to place a 105mm x 148mm frame in the
most unfavorable location, i.e. showing the greatest severity of discontinuities.

9.4.1.2 Nonlinearindications
Only those indications with a length greater than L1 shall be taken into account.
The sum of the surface areas of these indications shall be calculates2.
The length of these indications shall be measured.
The level of the (SM) indications shall be established using table 2.

9.4.1.3 Linearandalignedindications
The length L of the isolated indications greater than the minimum length taken into
account, defined by the required severity level, shall be measured. The sum of the
indications included in the 105mm x 148mm frame shall be calculated.
The section thickness t at the inspection location shall be measured.
The level of the LM an AM indications shall be established using table 3.
The lengths of the linear and aligned indications greater than the minimum length shall be
compared to the cumulative length specified in table 3.

9.4.1.4 Classificationoftheindicationsusingthereferencefigures
The severity level 5 correspondents to the largest indications. The severity level 001
correspondents to the smallest indications.
Normally, only the reference figures for the severity level 1,2,3,4 and 5 are used.
The reference figures equating to the non-linear as well as linear and aligned indications
(see table 2 & 3) are shown in annex B and C.
An actual figure and a reference figure are equivalent when the same total surface of
indications (non-linear) and/or the same length of linear or aligned indications of similar
appearance have been detected. The maximum permissible discontinuities may appear
simultaneously on the area of 105mm x 148mm.

9.4.1.5 Interpretationofresults
The casting shall be considered as conforming with this standard when the observed
severity level is equal to or better than that specified in the order. If for any indication type,
the observed severity level is worse than that specified in the order, the casting shall be
considered not to conform with this standard.
Note:

Non-linear as well as linear and aligned indications can appear simultaneously on the same part of the
casting.

If the casting surface is smaller in area then the reference surface area, the surface of the indications should be
proportionally reduced.
