been a family favourite for over 30 years. I will certainly be making it shortly it

Autumn, a season of change in the natural world, begins in September: the season of
'mists and mellow fruitfulness'. It is also the season of Harvest and Harvest Festivals
and the challenge of

a new school term: new beginnings are exciting, full of promise

but can be a bit daunting too! Warm and sunny weather at this time is often called an
'Indian Summer.'
This summer, particularly the month of August, had been amazing - not weather-wise but
certainly for sporting achievements. As I write this, our brilliant Team GB has won more
medals than ever before in the Olympic Games and we are second in the medals table,
leading everyone except the USA, a remarkable achievement for our small island and a
great source of inspiration.
Hundreds of millions of pounds have been invested in resourcing and training our
Olympians, ensuring that our athletes have the best training facilities, are able to attract
the best coaches in the world and have the best physical and psychological support to
assist optimum performance. And it has paid off.
Commitment, resourcing, dedication, courage, determination, single-mindedness, sacrifice
- all these qualities play a part in the make-up of a sporting hero. How would it be if we
could apply the same criteria to our own 'normal' lives? Just imagine what we could
achieve if we were as single-minded and dedicated as an Olympic athlete? We all have
the potential to be champions.
But of course it is very difficult, nay impossible, to stay focused at such a peak for very
long without living in a very particular, disciplined way with exceptional support, where we
are permitted to put our own training needs before everything else and this is very hard
for ordinary people to do.
We are all heroes in the eyes of God. Christians are asked to try and live lives worthy of
Jesus Christ, our perfect role model, and to always think of the needs of others before our
own: to love our neighbour as ourselves. This is hugely challenging task in a world
dominated by material priorities and personal gain; putting our own spiritual needs high on
the agenda is a problematic to start with, without adding in the needs of others. Without
the resourcing of God's help actively at work in our lives, we don't stand a chance of
achieving anything very much spiritually, let alone a gold medal. But Christians are not in it
for personal gain, just that our lives may reflect the glory of God.
Why don't you come and join us in our churches there are ten to choose from in our
group with a variety of different services and see if our worship 'speaks' to you,
especially if you feel there is something you are missing in your life. It may just make all
the difference to your future performance.

Grimston Eye
Oh what a Sunday (19th June)! Many thanks to the Coe family for hosting such a
great day! So much happening in such a small area, with many exhibits and stalls
both under cover and in the open. I wonder how many people said "I remember that
or those" as they looked at old petrol pumps and the many different old makes of
petrol cans. I noticed fathers pushing the junior family members on the swings, then
taking them for some duck fishing or having a go at tombola which was busy as
usual. There were plenty of 'filling stations' for cakes, drinks etc, and, of course,
strawberries and cream. I saw that sitting on a tractor still gives the younger
generation a feel good factor, and it was great to see again so many different old
makes on show. Many people had much enjoyed the old tractors' procession round
the village in the morning, and then the afternoon display which included an old
traction engine. How farm machinery has changed over the years! ( Now Mr Coe is
able to sit in the warm using his finger to control the latest computer combine while he
watches television!!)
Good to see the grass verges being cut again - back to routine thanks to the Parish
Council making regular payments to see it is done.
What a surprise to see Lynn Road being resurfaced two hours after we had received
the notice informing us it was to be done the next day! I wonder how long it will last? I
don't think the 20 mph restriction was observed by every driver!
Advertising a function certainly pays as at least seventy people came to the
strawberry tea at the Methodist chapel. (Thanks to all who displayed the posters.)
Brightly coloured bunting was hanging on the railings outside and round the walls
inside. The long table down the centre of the hall was covered with plates of
sandwiches, savouries and cakes - such temptation for any weight-watchers! The
chapel was soon full and the FLUKES (The Fenland Ukulele Group) were ready
to play. They played music from the sixties and had many people there enjoying
singing and moving to the much loved sounds. The refreshments were then
served, followed by a trolley carrying bowls of strawberries and cream. It was a
very enjoyable afternoon, and thanks were given to all the helpers in the kitchen
who did a mammoth job keeping us all happy. I do hope we can look forward to
another event next year!

OWLS
Owls is a monthly small group meet up for a
yone who can spare the time for a chat over lunch at a local restaurant. We have
been to quite a number of places now, but there are still lots waiting to be tried.!
Next dates are September 21 at the Bank House Hotel, Kings Lynn
Staithe;..October 19 th at Rathskeller on South Quay; and November23 at The
Ostrich Castle Acre. All are midday.
If you need transport , or intend coming for the first time, could you let me know
on 01485 609217, or email us on goughpj@btinternet.com...txt 07766432418.
Looking forward to meeting you all then.

Register of Electors
This year's annual registration exercise will be taking place from August onwards
with publication of a revised Register of Electors following on 1st December.
The first part of the registration process is the issue of a Household Enquiry Form.
This will be pre-printed with the names of anyone currently registered and a reply
is needed regardless of whether or not any changes need to be made. Anyone
whose name does not appear on the form and is aged 16 or over needs to be
added and anyone no longer there deleted. The form will not itself register
anyone new to an address; instead they will be sent an individual registration
form.
The Electoral Registration Officer would very much appreciate householders' cooperation in returning the Household Enquiry Form as quickly as possible. A
prompt response to any individual registration forms issued would also be helpful.
Online registration is now available at www.gov.uk/registertovote and only takes
a few minutes. If anything is unclear, householders or individuals can contact the
Electoral Helpline on 01553 616773.

Congham Fete 2016

Overcast skies and humid conditions on the day of this year's World Snailracing
Championship at Congham were not favourable for record breaking times. The
winner, Herbie 2, who came with his trainer Colin Voss from Histon in Cambridge,
finished the final race in 3mins 25 secs. The weather was perfect for racegoers
and others enjoying the Fete and it looked like a record attendance.
There are so many to thank for their support - the Scouts who did a sterling job in
marshalling the carparking, all the stallholders and those who helped set up and
clear away on the day, everyone who very generously donated prizes, books,
cakes, bottles etc. Special mention to the band, Freewheelers, aka Drierad, and
our sponsors, IBA Insurance Services Limited, Anthony Skerry of Stebbings Car
Centre, Chris and Linda Spragg of Leziate Drove Motors, Congham Hall Hotel
and Brandon Hire.
Also thanks to our chosen charities this year, Little Discoverers and West Norfolk
Befriending, who organised the facepainting and other attractions while raising
some funds for their own causes.
Thank you also to everyone who came along on the day to join in the fun. We
raised a fantastic sum of 3,200 for the upkeep of St Andrew's Church, Congham.
Make sure you book the date for next year - Saturday 15th July 2017!

This year is a special year for Methodists at Pott Row. It is 140 years since the
chapel was opened. The foundation stone was laid on 29th May 1876 and the
chapel was opened for worship on 25th September 1876.
We hope you enjoyed the Flower Festival at Pott Row on 12-14th August. Thanks
to all the flower arrangers - you made it such a special place with all the beautiful
arrangements. We raised 312 for the upkeep of the church. Thank you again.
And thanks to the GAP for the Songs of Praise.

Pott Row Methodist Flower Show

This year Pott Row Methodists have held a Flower Festival to celebrate the Chapel's
140th anniversary. Visitors were able to admire many beautiful floral displays (which
also showed how blessed we are to have such gifted members who use their various
skills to such good effect!) One member made a decorative string of bunting to hang
over the stage area with the words POTT ROW CHAPEL 140TH ANNIVERSARY.
Tables and chairs were set in the centre of the chapel so that visitors were also able to
enjoy hot and cold drinks along with home made cakes.
There were albums with pictures and writings recording many events over the past
years, and we were able to see some interesting alterations that have been made such as the original pews which were gradually phased out and replaced with chairs,
the present ones being much more comfortable!
The three day event finished with Gap members leading a special Songs of Praise
service ending with a pertinent anecdote and prayer from Stephen Watts, the Chapel
Now we look forward to the next 140 years!
Note from Jenny Baker
The success was made possible by all the flower arrangers who made such a
marvellous display.A big thank you to everyone who made cakes, gave raffle
prizes and all who helped in any way. It was good to see so many visitors who
made this weekend such a happy occasion.
Again lots of thanks to everyone.

GRIMSTON MEDICAL CENTRE

01485 600341
GASTROENTERITIS
Diarrhoea and vomiting are often caused by viruses. Vomiting
usually settles within 24-48 hours, and diarrhoea may persist for a
few days after the vomiting has settled. Provided that the patient is
able to drink to replace the fluid lost in diarrhoea/vomit, there is
usually no need to seek medical attention.
Try to ensure a normal fluid intake by drinking plenty. If you are
vomiting, drink small amounts frequently. There is no need to starve.
In babies, milk feeds may be stopped for up to 24 hours, but should
then be restarted at full strength. Breast feeding should continue.
When to see the doctor

If a child who is ill refuses to drink

If diarrhoea persists for more than one week
If diarrhoea recurs on restarting milk feeds
If a child with diarrhoea or vomiting has a temperature for more
than 24 hours
If you think that you (or your child) are seriously unwell

Sick notes for minor illnesses

Doctors do not issue sick notes for illnesses that last up to one
week. You should ask your employer for a Self-Certificate form,
which your employer is legally obliged to accept.

Grimston and District WI.

Our speaker in April brought a load of hats for us to try on. She hires them out for
weddings and special occasions and she has the knack of matching just the right
style and colour for her clients. The competition was something to wear on your
head and it was won by Chris Williams, second Cynthia Jackson and third, Kay
Shambrook. Our May meeting included puddings and savouries. There were
plenty to try and enjoy. There was not much left at the end of the evening! In
June we tried yoga exercises for hands and shoulders with Jean Clarke. She got
us all waving our arms about and exercising madly and she was very entertaining.
The competition was for something to help you relax and it was won by Mary
Lupton, second Kay Shambrook and third, Pat Watts. Next month is our summer
party and we are all hoping for a fine evening as it is held in our president's
garden 6.30 pm. All are welcome.

Pott Row Two Day Art Show

All 17 of us took part in the first Pott Row Village Art Group two day show on
Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th June held in Grimston Village Hall. The paintings
on display ranged from colourfull chickens to a railway station now long gone and
wildlife of all kinds and even to a windy cyclist!
After 15 very happy years meeting together and having our annual show at Pott
Row Methodist Chapel, we moved last month to our new home in the village hall.
It will now be possible to expand the group and three visitors to the show have
shown an interest in joining and are coming to try us out!
There were a good number of pictures to study and to complete the visit, time for
tea and home made cake and a good chat. Many of the paintings on display will
now be hanging in their new homes after being purchased at the show. We would
like to thank all our visitors for their support and hope to see you all again next

A plea to all dog owners.

We are a retired couple who enjoy our home and garden and we do not
have a dog. Unfortunately, the peace that we so treasure is spoilt on a
daily basis, from early morning to evening, by the barking of dogs. It
seems t hat some people allow their dogs to bark and bark, without any
thought for their neighbours at all. We would ask them, please, can you
keep your dogs under control and try to understand that, while we realise
that you love your dogs, it would be wonderful for the rest of us if we didn't
have to listen to them incessantly.
Thank you

GREENFINGERS July & August

In July members enjoyed two outings. Barnsdale Gardens consist of an 8 acre
site with 38 individual gardens, the creation of the late Geoff Hamilton for BBC's
Gardeners' World. Geoff appreciated that the majority of his viewers were on a
restricted budget. The gardens continue to inspire an amazing range of ideas
which could be applied to an average sized garden.
The weather forecast was most unpromising for our evening visit to Holme Hale
Hall, but it stayed dry and we were able to enjoy this beautiful garden. Set out in
a series of spaces, one moved from wild flower meadows through long borders,
sweeping lawns, vegetable and cutting gardens to an area rejuvenated in 2015
from an original design by Arne Maynard, a Chelsea Gold Medal winner. The
evening was rounded off with delicious cakes and welcome cups of tea. The club
is very grateful to Jenny Lyne for organising both these visits.
Huge congratulations are due to Cynthia and Neville Jackson who masterminded
the club's entry in the Sandringham Flower Show's competition for gardening
clubs. Their interpretation of A Garden Fit for a Queen was awarded a Large
Gold Medal and the EDP Best in Show Trophy. Greenfingers have taken part in
this prestigious show since 2006 and are proud to have a tally of eight Gold
Medals and of winning the trophy five times.
Our August meeting saw the welcome return of Trevor Harrison from Creake
Plant Centre, who talked about gardening on sandy soil. As always, his talk was
illustrated with a wide range of plants which tolerate and even thrive in these
difficult conditions. The mantra of right plant, right place was clearly the
solution to any difficulties we have hitherto encountered. These quality plants
were available for sale after the talk and many members will be making the drive
up to South Creake a must do in the weeks to come.
Plant of the Month winners were:
1st Brian Woollatt, 2nd Neville Jackson, 3rd Sabina Root.
Members are now preparing for the Annual Horticultural Show on September 3rd .
All residents of the four villages are invited to take part and support us as we raise
money for Blood Bikes.

POTT ROW BOWLS CLUB

Are you bored at home?
Come and join our indoor Carpet Bowls Club.
You're never too old or too young to start, even if you have never played before,
you will be most welcome.
The members are very friendly and enjoy our social afternoon.

at Grimston Village Hall. Charge for each session is 1.

Thornhill Singers in Concert.

In 1981, a group of friends got together at Thornhill Farm, North Elmham, to sing
for fun. Some thirty five years later they are still at it. They are highly acclaimed
throughout East Anglia and have sung at several country houses including
Felbrigg, Oxburgh Hall, Blickling, Audley End and Houghton Hall.
They have a wide repertoire which includes early sacred music, madrigals and
folk songs. Their leader is Chris Brown who is also accompanist and Assistant
Conductor of King's Lynn Festival Chorus.
Now they are coming to Grimston with a concert in St. Botolph's Church on
Saturday evening, September 10th commencing at 7.00pm. Tickets are 10 on the
door, members 9, including refreshments. Proceeds are in aid of Friends of St.
Botolph's.
With the wonderful acoustics of the building and such high quality performers, it
promises to be a magical evening. All are welcome.

Request regarding Bonfires

This is a plea to persistent bonfire lighters in the Church Close & Station Road
area of Roydon. These occur on a regular basis and on days when we have all
our doors & windows open as well as washing out on the line & the smell
penetrates throughout . & is difficult to disperse. They also effect asthma
sufferers particularly when they continue to smoulder all night long. It would be
very much appreciated by the affected villagers if these were curtailed so they do
not cause offence. Thank you.

The Last Word

Many of our well known sayings seem so apt these days. How about taking a
sledge hammer to crack a nut? Now at the end of my allotment there is a vast
walnut tree, and well, a hammer does come in useful when the fruit is ready! If I
think about it too long the squirrels will have grabbed the lot and buried them for
winter food. But it is worth giving some thought to the saying for indeed if you give
the nut too great a blow all you have will only be fit to toss into a walnut cake!
Take the report about travel insurance companies who these days on receiving a
claim, know full well that the special pleading is made up in an attempt to receive
more payment than the policy warrants. We just ignore the white lies and pay
what is the claimant's due, says the company. This is shocking when you
remember that we are challenged in the good book not to bear false witness
against your neighbour. To imply that everyone files a claim with the same level
of deception by condoning the practice of some is a bit heavy handed.
But to lift the discussion to a higher level we see that this traditional wisdom has
more about it than first thought. A common fear today is extremism. We all believe
we know where that comes from by the mention of the word jihadist. But let us not
tar every form of such unbalance with the same brush. And worse, take up the
proverbial hammer to provide the remedy, only ending up doing more damage.
The recent judgement of the Supreme Court on the proposed Named Person
measure passed by the Scottish Government is a case in point. This was the
decision to provide for every child in Scotland a social worker, teacher or the like
to be named as someone who would ensure that the child was not being
radicalised by the views of his/her parents' views. In spite of a large outcry that
this would take away the right of privacy from the family, and pose a threat to
freedom of speech, the measure was passed. Thanks to the patient and careful
action in bringing a case to the Supreme Court by charities such as the Christian
Institute, the justices agreed that the Scottish government had overstepped the
mark and the outcome would be greater damage than the danger suspected in
some homes across the country.
Nor did the justices mince their words in handing down their judgement. To quote
them, The first thing a totalitarian regime tries to do is to get at the children, to
distance them from the subversive, varied influences of their families, and
indoctrinate them in their rulers' view of the world. Within limits families must be
left to bring up their children in their own way. The Scottish Government has no
right of appeal and will have to put away their sledgehammer and think again.
