How to Succeed in Fifth (its as easy as ABC!):


Always practice, persist, and never give up.
Be positive have a growth mindset: We will work harder to get smarter!
Continue to build your stamina to learn and improve ALL THE TIME.
1. Homework Policy
Daily assignments (Mon-Thurs)
45 minutes to 1 hour
20 minutes of reading (Reading Log)
Reading Log: Students should read for 20 minutes
and record their summary in their Reading Log.
Please sign for verification. Logs are collected
every 2 weeks.
Weekly Report: Weekly Reports reflect the grades
of the previous week. It is sent home on Monday.
Please review with your child, sign, and return by
Wednesday.

o On-going assessments: teacher-prepared quizzes
and tests, projects, presentations
o Periodic Assessments: DIBELS & DAZE (reading
fluency and comprehension), SBAC Interim

6. How to help at home:
Read 20- 30 minutes every night. Read aloud to
your child or have your child read out loud to you
to practice their fluency. Check your childs
comprehension by having him/her retell what
he/she just read and/or ask questions.
FLUENCY words per minute benchmarks: 110 Fall,
127 Winter, 139 Spring
MULTIPLICATION TABLES and MENTAL MATH.
Encourage your child to practice their multiplication
tables and mental math facts everyday. Quiz them
and/or make flashcards with them. Fifth graders
need to know this in order to succeed in 6th grade.
Lexia: Please ensure your child goes on LEXIA at
least 20-30 minutes a day if below grade-level for
reading.

Core Literature: Students will be reading a
variety of literature and informational text.
Novel studies, literature circles, and text
analysis strategies will be covered.
WRITING

be using The Writing Process from choosing
and developing our seed idea, to drafting,
revising, editing, and eventually publishing our
