Which system of government do you prefer, a dictatorship or a democracy?

Give
specific reasons in support of your answer.

Good governance is a challenge. Different systems have their own merits and demerits.
However, out of dictatorship and democracy, I would go for the latter as it makes both the
rulers and the ruled accountable for their actions.
Notwithstanding various flaws inherent in a dictatorial regime, there are occasions when
a good decision can be taken without much trouble. For example, in India, we find slum
clusters with almost every good colony. Most of these clusters are dens of crime. In a
democratic set up, if the authorities want to remove such slums, there is a lot of
resistance. Politicians exploit the situation to make a political point out of it. A dictator,
on the other hand, can erase such dwellings easily and there will hardly be any
opposition.
On the contrary, in a democracy, a ruler can not take a decision, which may run counter to
the welfare of the people. A democrat has to ensure the betterment of the masses like
providing education, social justice and health facilities. He can not deny his subjects an
option like studying political science, which a dictator like the Shah of Iran did during his
days in power. In democracies people are equal before the eyes of law. If a president or a
prime minister is guilty of committing murder, he will be punished for his crime like
anybody else.
In view of the above virtues, I would prefer a democracy than a dictatorship as it respects
human values, treats people fairly and offers better opportunities to lead a happy and
peaceful life.
