INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY IN


BUSINESS
BTT 10I/20I COURSE OUTLINE 2016-2017

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course introduces students to the use of information and communication technology in the business
environment. Students will build a foundation of digital literacy skills necessary for success in a
technologically driven society. Students will develop word processing, spreadsheet, database, desktop
publishing, presentation software, and website design skills. Throughout the course, there is an emphasis
on digital literacy, effective electronic research and communication skills, and current issues related to the
impact of information and communication technology.

Unit Title and Essential Learning Requirements


1. Digital Literacy (25 hours)

Demonstrate an understanding of the terminology associated with information and


communication technology;
Demonstrate an understanding of the computer workstation environment;
Manage electronic files and folders;
Apply effective techniques when conducting electronic research.

2. Productivity Software (45 hours)

Produce documents that meet basic business standards and formats


Use word processing, spreadsheet and data base software to manage information and perform
a variety of tasks;

3. Design Software (28 hours)

Use presentation software to create and deliver effective presentations;


Use desktop publishing software to create publications;

4. Business Communication (ongoing)

Demonstrate an understanding of the characteristics of effective business documents and


communications;
Maintain a portfolio of exemplary work that illustrates skills in information and communication
technology; including the ability to create effective business communications.

5. Ethics and Issues in Information and Communication Technology (12 hours)

Demonstrates an understanding of legal, social, and ethical issues relating to information and
communication technology;
Analyse privacy and security issues relating to information and communication technology;

ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION:


To be successful in this course you must be able to achieve all of the Essential Learning requirements as
stated in the above table. Within each unit, the teacher will communicate further details of the
requirements. Evidence of Learning will be assessed through a variety of methods:

COURSE FEE:
Students will be assigned print copies for this course; any additional print copies may be purchased at a
modest cost.

PROCEDURES:
1. Extra Help - If you are having difficulties with the assignments, seek help early either during lunch or make
alternate arrangements with me. Missed assessments are to be made up during designated lunch periods.
2. Attendance - Attendance in class is an important part of learning and success. When you are absent, a
parent/guardian must call the schools attendance line on the date of absence. You are responsible for
getting caught up whenever you are away.
For short-term absences (sports, clubs, illness, field trips, appointments, etc.) students are expected
to obtain notes and handouts from a classmate or me.
For extended absences (family vacations, school trips, surgeries, etc.) students are expected to make
arrangements prior to being away. Missed assessment deadlines during this time must be
completed within the first five days back at school.
3. Late and Missing Assignments - All of the Essential Learning requirements communicated by the
teacher must be completed in order to earn this credit. This means you cannot miss or skip any opportunity
to demonstrate your learning as described in the Assessment and Evaluation section of this course outline.
It is also critically important for students to develop good personal management and planning skills. These
skills will be reflected in the Learning Skills area of the report card. The six Learning Skills are:

4. Cheating and Plagiarism - It is necessary for students to do their own best work. Most assessments
for this class will be done within the classroom, observed by a teacher, and this helps to minimize cheating
and plagiarism. In the event that cheating or plagiarism occurs, the following consequences may be
implemented, in consultation with administration:
o The student may be required to redo all or part of the assignment or assessment.
o The student may be required to complete an alternate assignment or assessment.

The students work may be treated as a missed assignment which may result in missing some
aspects of the Essential Learning requirements which may result in not earning this credit.
There may also be other consequences that are determined to be appropriate (e.g. detention, suspension,
etc.) as per the schools Progressive Discipline Process. Parents/guardians will be informed about the
infraction and the consequences. Please refer to your student handbook for more details.
