QURAN TAFSIR NOTES-MARYAM INSTITUTE

The Surah tells us about the story of Sayyidina Maryam alahis salam. Sayyidina Maryam
alahis salam was the respected and beloved mother of Sayyidina Essa alahis salam.
Who was Sayyidina Zakariyya alahis salam and how come his name is mentioned at the
very beginning of this Surah? He was one of the prophet of Allah talah.
The father of Sayyidina Maryam alahis salam was Sayyidina Imran alahis salam. It is
mentioned in the Quran that When the mother of Sayyidina Maryam alahis salam was
expecting her, her mother made dua or a pledge to Allah talah that, Ya Allah whoever I gave
birth to I intend to devote that child in your path..i.e. I want this child to serve deen and to
serve you. When Sayyidina Maryam alahis salam was born her mother was perplexed that
how can she donate a girl child in the path of Allah talah. Allah talah chose for her to deliver
a daughter as Sayyidina Maryam alahis salam. Sayyidina Maryam alahis salams mother
devoted her to the service of deen and dedicated her to the BAITUL MUQADDUS,
JERUSALEM.
When Sayyidina Maryam alahis salam was born, a lot were drawn amongst the people of
BAITUL MUQADDUS who really wanted to be her caretaker. One of the people whose chits
were drawn was Sayyidina Zakariya alahis salam and thereafter he took charge of Sayyidina

Maryam alahis salams upbringing in BAITUL MUQADDUS Jerusalem.

Ayah 1.
Kaf, Ha, Ya, 'Ayn, Sad. are Huruf-e-Muqattaat. The Muqattat (Arabic:
urf muqaat "disjoined letters" or "disconnected letters- the meanings of which is
Only known to Allah talah.
Ibn Abbas said, The scholars are unable to grasp its meanings.
Ash-Shabi said, It is the secret of Allah, so dont seek it. [1]
Ayah 2-3.

Sayyidina Zakariya alahis salam made dua to Allah talah in his low and humble voice for a
dutiful and a righteous child. According to the scholars- we should try to call out Allah talah
humbly and from the depth of our heart-then inshaAllah our dua will get accepted by Allah
talah.
Lessons for us: the etiquette of making dua. We should learn to confess our weaknesses and
our state in front of our Lord, the way Sayyidina Zakariya alahis salam called on to his Lordis mentioned in ayah 4. He said, "My Lord, indeed my bones have weakened, and my head
has filled with white, and never have I been in my supplication to You, my Lord, unhappy.
[19:4]
And indeed, I fear the successors after me, and my wife has been barren, so give me from
Yourself an heir 19:5 this teaches us the power of having tawaqul (reliance) in Allah talah.

Sayyidina Zakariya alahis salam had firm belief that his dua can only be accepted if Allah
talah wills his dua to get accepted. The end result of all the means we use to benefit ourselves
in this duniya rest one and only with Allah talah. Sayyidina Zakariya alahis salam wished for
a child so that his generation get an heir and so that his new born child could take forward the
mission of prophet hood.
It comes in hadith: the scholars are the inheritors of the prophets.
Who will inherit me and inherit from the family of Jacob. And make him, my Lord, pleasing
[to You]." [19:6] Sayyidina Zakariya alahis salam made dua for a righteous child who is
pleasing to Allah talah.
