It is important for us to learn to forgive and forget. With close reference to the text, explain
how this is portrayed by one of the characters in the novel.
The novel I have studied is Captain Nobody by Dean Pitchford. After reading the novel,
it is important for us to forgive and forget. This is portrayed in the novel by one of the
characters, Chris Newman.
Chris Newman forgives the real person who causes him to fall into his coma. It starts
with the incident from the Big Game, which later on people refer it as the Big Tackle. The
Big Game involves teams form Fillmore High School and Merrimac High. When the Big
Tackle happens, it is their second consecutive finals and it has always sided Ferrets the
Fillmore ever since. In the final minute of the Big Game, the situation is getting tensed as
Fillmore High School is falling behind to Merrimac High. Chris shows high determination
when he decides to go for a personal touchdown at the opponents defensive end. He manages
to bring the well-deserved victory for his team but unfortunately, he falls into a coma as there
are clashes of helmets during the Big Tackle.
That has caused mixed reactions from the locals as some of them start to blame Reggie
Ratner, the Merrimac High player for the incident. It has not got any better for him as some
students form Fillmore High Schools start to pay revenge to him, although it is not clear that
Reggie is guilty for the Big Tackle. His reputation has been tarnished and his family is not
living peacefully as they need to face the public humiliation towards them. At the end of the
day, it is learnt that it was not Reggie who caused Chris to be knocked out and revealed as it
is actually Darryl Peeps who clashes his helmet against Chris during the final moment of the
Big Game. Chris also makes it clear that such thing happens in sports and sometimes they are
unavoidable.
This clearly shows that when we learn to forgive and forget, we will also be able to
maintain harmonious relationship amongst us and we could also avoid more severe incident
from happening. Just like in the case of the Big Tackle, who knows if the truth is not
revealed, the initial assumption of Reggie committing suicide will turn into harsh reality.
