Dance Class Description:

Welcome to Dance! Dance at MS137 focuses on using your creativity as well as studying different dance
techniques, cultures/history of dance, and what it means to be a performer. As a dance student, you will be
introduced to different styles and techniques (including but not limited to jazz, modern, ballet, social dances, and
various cultural forms) and mind-body practices (such as conditioning and Yoga). Through various techniques
and styles, we learn about the diversity and creativity of one another through improvisation and choreography.
The MS 137 dance student is recognized as a dance artist who engages in the art form through seeing, rehearsing,
creating, performing, and discussing, as well as a dance critic, historian, and social activist through critiquing,
reading, writing, researching, and presenting their findings.

Performances:
Performances are a huge part of our end of 1st (January) and 2nd semesters (June). It takes a great deal of preparation and
hard work to become performance ready. It is a privilege and opportunity earned by students who can follow the class
expectations.

What happens if Im pulled from the performance (not including medical excuse)?
In the event that you are pulled from the performance, a research project will be assigned to you in place of performance.
While the rest of the class rehearses and prepares, you would work on completing a dance research project. The grade
you earn on this project would take the place of the grade you would have earned on the performance. However, the
maximum grade you would earn for the end of the year would be a 70% (C), depending on the work handed in. This
restriction has been put in place because the project can not make up for the amount of actual dancing you would miss
during class. The amount of work in writing the paper does not equal the same amount of mental and physical work the
student who are performing are required to complete.
**If you have a medical excuse from a performance, you will be also be required to complete a research project. You will
be able to receive full credit, although a DOCTORS NOTE MUST BE PRESENTED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.
