I nstagram Vs. Reality

BY: Jessica Soria

f
Every time we look at

photos on Instagram of women?s makeup, we think to

ourselves, "their eyebrows are so perfect, their skin looks flawless and their
eyeliner is on point." We try so hard to achieve this look, but the outcome is
never quite the same when we take our own selfies. As a professional makeup
artist of 8 years, I am here to tell you that Instagram makeup is different from
reality makeup and here is why:

All professional makeup artist who have worked with photographers know that
lighting, photoshop and filters play a significant role in achieving a flawless
photo. Today?s women have become more infatuated with makeup and have
learned the secrets of photographers. Women now express their makeup looks
on Instagram by using these techniques.

IG: redcarpetmakeupbyjessicasoria

Lighting is the most important to capture a great photo. You'll notice

that some Instagramers take a photo in front of a window or a ring
light. This helps enhance the colors of the makeup and prevents
shadows on the face. The perfect lighting gives the appearance that
your skin is glowing and smooth. As a substitution for photoshop,
unless otherwise preferred, today?s apps help remove blemishes,
smoothes under eye bags and diminishes the appearance of
wrinkles. A few examples are available for download such as Perfect
365, You Cam Perfect, and You Makeup.

Once you achieved your perfect photo, it?s time to download your
photo to Instagram and choose a filter to enhance the final touches.
My personal favorite is the filter in Mayfair on Instagram. This filter
gives you that beautiful the sun-kissed glow!

So the next time you find yourself looking in the mirror and
comparing yourself to a photo on Instagram, remember that in
reality, the person you're looking at doesn't always look like they do
in the photo. It has been slightly enhanced for perfection. So
whether Instagram inspires you, just remember you are beautiful
the way you are with or without photo enhancements.

Those Dam n
Eyes

Q+A INTERVIEW
BY: Sarai Vela
In today?s world of ?Rock & Roll,? where many emerging musicians are trying to figure
out how to fit in, Those Damn Eyes is a band that is not afraid to experiment with their
sound (which makes them that much cooler already.) Being an up-and-coming band
in Austin, Texas (The Live Music Capital of the World), can be challenging for some,
but these guys know how to have fun with it! They take the time to explore and
support local music, find a little inspiration, and then get right back to their business.
Those Damn Eyes focuses on putting all they?ve got into their live performances,
which includes getting a little ?sexy? and ?sweaty.? (If that doesn?t sound fun, then I
don?t know what is.)
I made my way down to dirty Sixth Street to hang out and chat it up with lead
vocalist Alyssa Ehrhard and lead guitarist Daniel Corder. Not only was it the
?grooviest? conversation, but these talented Austinites proved that they know exactly
what cool music is all about. And the best part? They keep it real: expressing that ?at
the end of the day, it?s all about the love for making music.?

"EYES. THOSE DAMN EYES...WE MADE LOVE

JUST LOOKING AT THEM"
-Charles Bukowski

So w h at 's t h e st or y beh in d t h e n am e of you r ban d?

Daniel: So the name ?Those Damn Eyes? comes from a Charles Bukowski quote.
I'm not sure if it's from one of his novels or like a short story but there's a line
where he's describing a very attractive woman's eyes and he uses the phrase "those
damn eyes" and it just stuck out to us, and I thought we'd call it that.
Livin g in t h e Live M u sic Capit al of t h e Wor ld, ar e t h er e an y spot s in t ow n
w h er e you lik e t o go h an g ou t f or m u sical in spir at ion ?
Alyssa: For musical inspiration we actually met at this little wine bar called House
Wine and we would go to these open mic's like every week and just do covers and
stuff, but it quickly escalated from there. You know? That's kind of how we got
working together. So I would say that, probably, yeah. That place.
Daniel: As far as where the two of us met, it was through our friends at House
Wine. And then like outside of that, we like to go see shows on Red River. We also
like to go to the East Side. Most of our friends in Austin are singer-songwriter- like
folk players, so we're you know, we're kind of the Rock & Roll black sheep of the
group, if you will. But we like to sing all different kinds of music.

Wh o ar e you r m u sical in f lu en ces?

Daniel: So my personal musical influences in the Rock Realm are: the classic rock guys like Led
Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Those are the guys that got me into playing
guitar. As far as the instrumentation of Those Damn Eyes, it draws heavily from post-hardcore
rock. So like Pierce the Veil, Taking Back Sunday, you know, like heavier alternative bands like that.
And Paramore is another big one as well.
Alyssa: And then with me, like, I'm groovy as freak you know? But at the same time, I've got a
little bit of an attitude problem. I listen to a lot of really-really girly sh* t, like Katy Perry and Marina
and The Diamonds and I love Marina and The Diamonds! I know I'm obsessed with them right
now! It's terrible. Oh yeah, Melanie Martinez. I love? Melanie Martinez. Yeah, I listen to a lot of
like really strong female singers. And for me, the greatest part is being back to being this girly girl,
like this straight up girly girl and having these four handsome talented guys backing me up. You
know? It's AWESOME! IT'S AWESOME! I love playing with them, yeah.
I r ead you gu ys w er e w or k in g w it h M at t Novesk ey (bassist f or Blu e Oct ober .) How did t h at
collabor at ion h appen ?
Daniel: So I met Matt Noveskey through another local band called "Swimming with Bears" and
"Swimming with Bears" was recording their first album with Matt and the guys in the band invited
me to come hang out during the recording session. So I sort of sat in the shadows and just
watched and added my two cents when I could. And I just gradually developed a relationship with
Matt Noveskey and ended up doing some work with him. So we've cut a number of songs, about
13 songs total. We haven't released anything yet but we will.

?...AT THE END OF THE DAY, IT'S ALL

ABOUT THE LOVE FOR MAKING MUSIC..."

You descr ibe you r sou n d w it h w or ds lik e: " Sexy " an d " Sw eat y " ?
Alyssa: Oh, that was Daniel's idea! I think it's just because I'm, like when we get off the
stage, I'm all like you know, I've got this outfit on and I'm all like sexed up, pretty much and
it's awesome! I get to have this alter-ego that comes out but you know it?s like, "Whoa where
did that come from?! It was there the whole time!? And then he's usually really sweaty, he's
usually really dripping. The guys are always dripping in sweat afterwards. Not just Daniel, but
like all the guys.
Ar e you in t h e pr ocess of r ecor din g an albu m ?
Daniel: It will be a debut-release. We recorded an album's worth of material over the last
year but haven't released it yet and then we are currently working on three new songs. We
are essentially lining our pockets with marketing and promotional ammunition. We have a
new music video that's going to come out with one of these songs and we were planning on
releasing it in the right way with the PR Company and just having more impactful release
material.
Wh at ar e som e goals you w an t t o accom plish f or t h e ban d t h is year ?
Alyssa: Honestly, I would just like to kind of be that one that's like, you know, shouting out
for the girls. I love guys, obviously, I'm around them all the time, but a lot of the time, I feel
outnumbered. There are not as many girls, I think, in the music industry as there are guys
and so I'm kind of just like pushing for the girl?s team.
Daniel: I think our goals as a unit this year, is to release our new material, create
wide-spread awareness of the band. We want to focus on playing shows outside of Austin;
playing shows with bands that are similar to us, like you know, like their rock style is similar
to Those Damn Eyes. We want to go on tour; we want to play shows that will just create more
awareness of the band.

What

is the importance of a healthy lifestyle? I'm sure everyone has their

own views and opinions about this. So I'm going to break mine down for you a bit.
This lifestyle, can be caused by learning new information about your body,
maybe you have just discovered that you neglected it so much, you now have
diabetes. Maybe you have learned that you are now allergic to certain foods, or even
just other allergies. The human body can be affected by the littlest things. We
however live such busy lifestyles we never take time to listen to what is going on.
We all want the easy fix, but have you ever sat back and wondered what the
?quick fix ? side effects could be doing to you? What if you could start to change your
issues by yourself, with a little knowledge and understanding? I have had a lot of
clients and personal experiences with learning the ins and outs of what may work
and may not work.

First off I recommend that everyone takes a multivitamin. I will be honest my 5 year
old takes one. You may be asking well why? Multivitamins plug the holes in our
immune systems and help with anything we may be lacking in vitamin intake. Much
like when you have a leak, it doesn?t always mean that the whole structure is broken,
but that there is a small hole that needs something to fill the gap. Same concept as
your body, even children have holes no matter how healthy and active they may be.
Each day you are presented with different stress? and different opportunities for
activity , whether that be mental or physical and even emotional. Taking a
multivitamin will help you everyday to handle all the things that are thrown your
way, overtime you will feel more energized and see that you may not get sick as
often.

M ost

people say that they don?t

have time to do meal prep or

workout, or even take time to take
care of themselves. Now I'll be
honest here, that is an excuse. If
you can make enough time to go
out on a Friday or Saturday night
and grab a drink with your friends
or co workers, you have enough
time in your schedule to take care
of your health and well being.
While I would never tell someone
what to do with their own time, I
will absolutely challenge and try to
understand their mindset as to why
they can't "make it happen? , or
they are ?too busy? .
It comes down to what is most important to you. Everyone comes around at
their own time, sometimes it may be later than needed , or sometimes it may be
perfect timing. Lets be real for a second, who doesn?t want to look good in a
swim suit, or in the privacy of their own bedroom? I'm sure not one person who
disagree with me. That doesn?t mean you need to look like a super model or
even a lifter, it means looking and feeling the best you can by being the
healthiest you that you have ever been.
How can you make it fun? How can you make it easy? How can you make
time?
All the questions I'm sure you are asking.
St ep 1: ask yourself what is it you want to achieve by having a fitness goal?
St ep 2: ask yourself is this a realistic goal?
St ep 3: can you do this on your own ? or do you think you need the help of
someone in the industry ?
St ep 4: when will you start your journey to the goal you have just set?
St ep 5: if you answered these questions , I have to say congrats!!! You now
realize you have something to work and work for , and you may have not even
known it.
Here's my recommendations for you to start you on your journey?s. Keep
a log of what you are eating daily for a week and don?t lie about it because it only
hurts you not anyone else. Start drinking more water daily, dehydration is
usually a huge factor in health issues. Do not be afraid to ask for help or advice
when it comes to your health. Lastly, get started, you will be surprised how easy
it will become once you start.

"What more can I say about this excellent production? The cast ? right down to
the bit players ? is uniformly top-drawer. Phillips? tortured performance is
Oscar-worthy. The cinematography by Philip... Roy is lush and elegant, and the
soundtrack by Douglas Edward appropriately moody and mournful. Sanitarium
is a film that deserves more attention that it?s been getting. It may well be the
