The definition of idiom The devil is the detail: When people say that the devil in the detail, they mean that small
things in plans and schemes that are often overlooked can cause serious problems later on. It also refers to a catch
or mysterious element hidden in the details, and derives from the earlier phrase "God is in the detail" expressing
the idea that whatever one does should be done thoroughly, i.e. details are important.

1. About the Course

1.1 Short description of the course
In this course you learn how to develop concepts into designs. You learn the basics of materials and
manufacturing. You will understand how a certain choice of material can influence the design and
manufacturing process and vice versa. The focus in this course will be on the most common materials
and manufacturing processes illustrated by hands-on examples. After this course you are able to choose
a fitting material and manufacturing process for your designs based on criteria such as function, form,
costs, sustainability and quality.
In the final stages of design project 1, you need to evaluate your products feasibility and determine its
components, features and details. One of the essential steps of this process, is selecting materials and
deciding on the possible production processes. Materials and manufacturing course provides the basic
knowledge for material and process selection. In design project 2, you will continue more on this topic.

1.2 Place in the program

Materials & Manufacturing is supporting Design Project 1,2 and 3. By introducing you to the basic
materials and manufacturing processes you will be able to make grounded decisions in your design
project. In all design projects you will apply the theory and experience its applications.

1.3 Competences and learning goals

Competences

Discover knowledge by investigating and experimenting

Integrate human, market, technological, and context values during the design process
Consider desirability, viability, and feasibility while designing and engineering

Learning goals

Be skilled in materialization and production of designs

Fundamental knowledge on Methods and Tools
Analytical reasoning and Problem solving
System thinking
External, Societal and Environmental context
Designing outcomes

2016-2017 Materials and Manufacturing

Reference books

Materials and design by Mike Ashby and Kara Johnson

Process- 50 product designs from concept to manufacture by Jennifer Hudson
Materials and sustainable development by Michael F. Ashby
Sustainable materials, processes and production by Rob Thompson
Manufacturing and Design by Erik Tempelman

3.2 Type of education

This course is structured in form of presentations, preparation with online materials, workshops and
lectures. The focus of the course is to introduce different families of materials & manufacturing
processes and support students to be able to apply their knowledge into their design practice.

3.3 Classes and assignments

Classes are not mandatory to attend. The class assignments are mandatory and submitted directly at the
end of the class. The absentees need to do the class assignments on their own and submit asap.

4. Tests and grading

4.1 Type of tests
You will be graded* based on three elements
70%

M&M main assignment

30%

M&M for DP1 (submission of whole DP1 report)

0%

Class assignments

*Grading criteria for Main assignment is discussed in week3 class and for M&M for DP1 is discussed in
week7 class.

4.2 M&M main assignment

One need to extensively write about materials and manufacturing of existing five products of their
choice. The template and details are provided on BB in week 2. If the product is complex, then the
student can choose two of its biggest parts.

4.3 Class assignments

The submission of class assignments is mandatory to pass the subject. There is no grade attached to it.
The only condition is that they need to be accepted by the tutor. The students need to resubmit by
working on the comments given by the tutor. The information could be seen every week on the BB.

4.4 M&M for DP1

You are asked to compose a material and manufacturing report because it is crucial to learn how to
apply your knowledge in your design practice. You will apply your knowledge to select the proper
material and manufacturing process for the product which you are developing in Design Project 1.
You will explain in details:

the requirements and the criteria of material selection

the process and the logic of your material/manufacturing method selection
complete manufacturing process of your product

You will send your complete DP1 report in pdf format on Thursday, November 4, 2016.
If you are not taking Design Project 1, please inform the course coordinator to receive your assignment.

4.5 Conditions for grading

Your M&M main assignment and report will be evaluated only if you have successfully submitted your
class assignments.

4.6 Re-sit
If your grade is below 5.5 it means that you do not pass the course. During week 10 of the next module
there is a chance to re-sit and submit the assignment.
