Road Windmill

Abstract
The objective of the project is to design a wind turbine to recapture wind
energy from the vehicles on the road. Wind energy is considered the
fastest growing clean energy source however it is limited by variable
natural wind. Roads can provide a required considerable amount of wind
to drive a turbine due to high vehicle traffic. This energy is unused.
Extensive research on wind patterns is required to determine the average
velocity of the wind created by incoming vehicles. The wind turbines will
be placed on the medians therefore fluid flow from the both sides of the
road will be considered in the design. Ideally, the turbine can be used
globally as an unlimited power source for streetlights and other public
amenities. For this project we are looking for vertical axis wind turbine.
Problem statement
Nowadays, one of worrying issue is global warming. 96% of the causes of
global warming is carbon dioxide emissions mostly from burning fossil
fuels. Malaysia uses almost 80% of electricity generated by burning fossil
fuels and 20% in hydroelectric generation.
Objective
1) To design a windmill to be placed on the open road.
2) To create an environmental friendly product.
3) To determine the amount of electricity be generated by windmill.

Scope of study
This study will be carried out in the near highway (Federal highway, Elite,
Guthrie, Plus). To test the effectiveness of the natural power sources. To
determine the average velocity of the wind created by oncoming vehicles.
