Dear Parents,

This will be the last parent bulletin for the school year. It was due to go out on Friday but as this is the last
week of school it seemed appropriate for it to go out this week.

It has been a privilege to serve the ISM community for the past three years. My wife and family have grown
to love the Philippines and my two boys grades 4 and 6, are already making plans to graduate from ISM!
Speaking of graduation, last Friday we graduated 167 senior students in our FAT. It was a moving, at times
humorous, but entirely appropriate ceremony, which honored the hard work and diligence of the Class of
2010. We had a number of engaging speakers, including the Class President, Raheem Abid, ISM
Superintendent, Mr. David Toze, former President of the Philippines Fidel V. Ramos and the faculty
speaker, Mr. David Birchenall. I have included a copy of my closing remarks, so you can perhaps gain a
sense of the personality of the Class of 2010 and of the occasion itself. If you ever get the chance to attend
ISM’s HS Graduation I urge you to attend. It is a very special event and I believe the students really feel
that their HS career is celebrated in style.

I wish to congratulate all seniors and their families on an excellent year. I know that they have been well
prepared for university and armed with their ISM Diplomas they are ready to tackle the next important
stage in their lives. Good luck and always keep in touch with ISM.

Mr. Mike Dickinson, the High School Assistant Principal and I, are both eagerly looking forward to School
Year 2010-2011. We plan to continue with many of the plans that were started this year, including;
• Further curricula alignment through the Understanding by Design(UbD) process
• A HS focus on looking for great learning and great teaching.
• Refinements and enhancements to our online delivery of learning materials and general
information.

Please be reminded that school will finish at 12:00pm on Thursday June 3. Printed HS report cards are
available for collection on Tuesday, June 8, though they will be available on Power School from Friday,
June 4.

School year 2010-2011 will commence on Thursday August 5, 2010.

I would like to wish everyone a safe and relaxing vacation.

Kind regards,

William R. S. Brown Michael Dickinson

A MESSAGE FROM THE OPERATIONS AND SECURITY DEPARTMENT
I. IDs for the New School Year
Parent IDs
Current parent IDs will continue to be valid for the new school year 2010-2011.
Parents who require replacement school IDs due to loss or damage can acquire these from the Security Office upon
payment of Php100.00 to the Cashier.

Student IDs
All students will be issued with new ID cards at the beginning of the new school year. This year there will be no need for
returning students to visit the Security Office as we will be utilizing the photographs taken for the yearbooks.

School Passes
School passes issued to parent’s employees and representatives need to be replaced for next school year. As of August
31, 2010 the burgundy bordered passes will be invalid.

The security office is now accepting applications for new school passes, however the cards will not be available for
collection before July 1, 2010.

Each family will be given two free school passes. Additional school passes may be obtained after paying a processing fee
of Php100.00 each to the Cashier’s Office.

2, Car Stickers for the New School Year

The car stickers for school year 2010/2011 will be available from the security office beginning July 1, 2010.
For vehicles already displaying an existing sticker, parents should submit a completed renewal form with a copy of a
current LTO official receipt. For new vehicles, parents are reminded that a copy of the vehicle’s certificate of
registration and a current official receipt need to be submitted with the application. Applications for vehicles registered
with companies or other institutions should be supported by a letter of assignment.

Each ISM family will be issued one vehicle sticker free of charge. Any additional stickers will be issued following payment
of P100 to the cashier’s office.
I would like to thank all members of the ISM community for their cooperation across this school year in helping us
maintain ISM as a safe and secure environment for our children.

Dear ISM Community,

The end of the school year is fast approaching, and I would like to keep everyone abreast of the changes that will take
place in the canteen for school year 2010-2011.

After a lengthy bidding process of the canteen concessionaires that was vetted by a canteen committee comprising
students, parents, faculty and administrators, it was determined that the four current back concessionaires (Allegro,
Piadina, Deli-France and Red Kimono) would continue to provide their services. It was also felt that Urban Chef, which
services the main canteen, would also continue but with only half of their present space.

At the beginning of the school year, feedback from students, faculty and staff about the current canteen services, indicated
a strong interest in having more vegetarian/healthy options. After careful consideration, we have offered a canteen contract
to Yogi Chef, which will offer a range of vegetarian and vegan alternatives thus providing options to canteen users that have
never been available in the past. Yogi Chef will be located in the section of the cafeteria that currently houses the pasta bar,
sandwich bar and fruit smoothie area. For those parents with ES children, they will have the option to select Yogi Chef as
the lunch provider for their children but at this time it will be pre-packed food rather than a buffet set-up. Please note that
lunch sign-ups start at the end of July.

One other change in Elementary food services is that, due to low numbers, the student morning snack service for children
will no longer be available. This means that parents who want their children to have a morning snack will need to pack this
for them on a daily basis.

For any future concerns regarding the canteen services please email me directly at mapuam@ismanila.org.

Thank You
Michelle Mapua
HR Director

Graduation Speech Class of 2010
By William Brown
High School Graduation May 28,2010

Former President Ramos, Mrs. Ramos, Members of the Board of Trustees, Mr. Toze, ISM Administration,
Faculty, Parents, Friends, and Class of 2010.

Congratulations! You’ve made it! You have in your possession a well deserved HS diploma. Today you
have received some excellent advice from our engaging speakers. I urge you to take heed of these
messages as you embark on new and exciting opportunities that lie before you.

For the last two years I have asked the graduating class a simple question. Two years ago, it was Can
you cook? Last year it was What do the letters ISM stand for? So, here is my question to you, the Class
of 2010! Do you KISS?
No, I am not prying into your private life; rather it is about using and applying the design principle
Keep it Short and Simple, or some may say, it is Keep it Simple Stupid, but that is certainly not
relevant amongst this talented class! The KISS principle that I am referring to states that simplicity
should be a key goal in design, and that unnecessary complexity should be avoided. Let’s think about
this beyond design for a moment. What effort does it take to do simple things, like a smile, being
polite, saying hello, and what are the potential rewards for such simplicity?

Simple ways of doing things can be very affective. Let’s take Carolyn Davidson, a graphic design
student at Portland State University, in 1971. Carolyn, working at a rate of $2/hour, presented a
number of simple design options to Phil Knight of a company called Blue Ribbon Sports. They were
looking for creative design ideas for a new brand line. Davidson submitted a total bill of $35 for her
work. The company ultimately selected the design now known globally as the Nike Swoosh. Apparently
in 1983, some 12 years later, Knight looked up Davidson and gave her a diamond Swoosh ring and an
envelope filled with Nike stock to express his gratitude.

I like this story for lots of reasons. To me it speaks of understated creative genius, but also of the
inherently human conditions of loyalty, respect and of being apart of something great.

I believe these qualities can be applied to the Class of 2010. In so many ways you have been an
incredibly creative class. You have raised thousands of pesos in limited days to support Typhoon Ondoy
victims. You have danced, sung, acted, written, researched and performed throughout your time in
High School. We have had impersonations from Rahim and others, renditions of ISM Idol, and many
humorous grade level assemblies.

You have however, also been very supportive, respectful and tolerant of each other. As a class you
have been very true to our school values of Integrity, Service and Merit, particularly emphasizing the
student wide goal of being Responsible, Caring and Ethical contributors. Under your watch, and guided
by Ms Gillman, you have moved from Go Green at club status, to Eco Council at a school wide level,
with local and international service partners, such as our waste management partner PCF.

Today, actually right now, the piece about being a part of something great should really sink in. This is
the very last time you will all be together. In fact I know of one graduate who leaves Manila at 11pm
tonight! I ask you to celebrate your graduation in grand style, but please remember your journey,
remember your friends, remember those who have moved on, like Natalie, and one day after you have
become successful as I know you will, just like Mr. Knight from Nike, come back and pay us a visit
(maybe even drop a donation in the ISM Filipino Scholar fund)!

Prominent writer, Theodore Geisel, or otherwise known to us as Dr. Seuss, wrote this, “Oh! The places
you’ll go! You’ll be on your way up! You’ll be seeing the great sights! You’ll join the high fliers who
soar to high heights.”

In this vein I am pleased that this years Graduation Committee has chosen cranes to adorn the FAT.
Many of you will know that according to Japanese tradition, the crane is said to live for one thousand
years, and if one folds one thousand origami cranes, one's wish for good health will be granted. More
recently, folding one thousand cranes has come to embody a wish and prayer for peace, especially
since the death of Sadako Sasaki, a Japanese girl who survived the Hiroshima atomic bomb blast at age
two, only to die at age 12 of radiation-induced leukemia, while she was diligently folding cranes as her
prayer for peace.

Inspired by Sadako's example, Japanese school children and later children of the world, perhaps
through Eleanor Coerr’s children’s book Sadako and the thousand paper cranes, have established a
tradition and movement of folding one thousand paper cranes of peace.

I was lucky enough to meet Eleanor Coerr as a visiting author in Beijing in the early 1990’s. This
particular image of international peace has stuck with me ever since, an image that was the product of
my international education. Today I would like to pass it on, to you, the class of 2010.

I encourage you to live the KISS design principles and apply Leonardo Da Vinci’s maxim, “Simplicity is
the ultimate sophistication.” Combine it with the creativity of the Nike Swoosh. Add your loyalty as a
class, and under the banner of peace, from one thousand paper cranes, I suspect you will, as Dr Suess,
put it “join the high fliers who soar to high heights”.

You have met, and in most cases exceeded, the ISM graduation requirements and today we applaud you
in your collective endeavor.

Class of 2010, please rise. To symbolize the conferring of your ISM diploma and that you have
individually challenged yourself to meet and fulfill all of ISM’s graduation requirements, I ask you with
your left hand to move the tassel on your mortarboard from your right to your left.

Ladies and Gentlemen I give you the Class of 2010!
