Unit 1 Image Analysis:

Name: Elle Smith

Period: 6
Answer the following questions for each document.

Document A
1. Describe what is being shown in the document (people, objects, etc.):
In this document, there are four figures: three circles and one rectangle. On each of these
shapes, there is an outline drawing of a human head.
2. Does what is being shown appear to be recently created or older? (Provide
evidence to support your claim)
It appears to be recently created because of the precision of the lines and the similarity of all
four heads, even when they are distorted due to the two-dimensional drawing of a threedimensional object.
3. What action(s) are taking place in the document?
A human head is drawn onto four different forms of map projections, so the head becomes
distorted because it is being shown on a two-dimensional plane.
4. Does this document appear to be related more to humans or the physical world?
Why?
This document appears to be more related to humans because its purpose is to help humans
understand the imprecision of two-dimensional maps.
5. Why do you think this document was created (What is the main idea)?
This document was created to show the flaws in map projections. The creator used a human
head rather than a world map because the distortion becomes much more obvious. Everyone
knows what a human head looks like, while not everyone knows exactly what all of the
continents look like, so there is a better understanding of the way map projections work.

Document B
1. Describe what is being shown in the document (people, objects, etc.):
This document shows four satellites in space with arrows pointing to a spot in Western Europe.
2. Does what is being shown appear to be recently created or older? (Provide
evidence to support your claim)
The image appears to be recently created because man-made satellites are a relatively recent
invention.
3. What action(s) are taking place in the document?
The satellites are sending information to a receiver of some sort. They might be GPS satellites,
in which case they would be sending information, such as time and location, to determine the
position of the receiver relative to other places on Earth.
4. Does this document appear to be related more to humans or the physical world?
Why?
This document appears to be more related to humans, because humans are the only recipients
of information from satellites.
5. Why do you think this document was created (What is the main idea)?
This document was created to show that multiple satellites can send information to a specific
location, where the data is received and used.
