About the Book
Troilus and Cressida re-tells the epic story of The Iliad but with an altered focus.
The tale of these lovers (and Pandarus) was told earlier by both Homer and Geoffrey Chaucer. In Shakespeare, however, the epic proportions are reduced to the quotidian details of human passion, including quarrels and misunderstandings which reduce the protagonists to a pitying level, including calculation and manipulation
(Mowat, xv). The result has been called satire; unfortunately, it is satire without bite or humor.
About the Author
Donald J. Richardson is still trying to teach English Composition at Phoenix College.
Prologue
The Winter’s Tale
ACT I
SCENE I. Troy. Before Priam’s palace.
Enter TROILUS armed, and PANDARUS
TROILUS
21 Still have I tarried.
PANDARUS
22 Ay, to the leavening; but here’s yet in the word
23 hereafter
the kneading, the making of the cake, the
24 heating of the oven and the baking; nay, you must
25 stay the cooling too, or you may chance to burn your lips.
PANDARUS
62 I speak no more than truth.
TROILUS
71 What, art thou angry, Pandarus? what, with me?
TROILUS
76 Say I she is not fair?
TROILUS
81 Pandarus—
PANDARUS
82 Not I.
TROILUS
83 Sweet Pandarus—
PANDARUS
84 Pray you, speak no more to me: I will leave all as I
85 found it, and there an end.
