YEAR-END HOLIDAYS
IN BANDUNG
Bandung is one of the popular tourist
destinations in Indonesia as the city is not only
known for its cool climate, culinary delights,
and plenty of tourism objects, but has also
been dubbed as a shopping paradise thanks to
the fashion factory outlets scattered in various
parts of the provincial capital city of West Java.

ir pollution has increasingly

become a serious threat to the
people particularly residents
in big cities where the number
of automotive vehicles has
kept on increasing, forcing authorities
to expand roads at the expense of
green space or access for bikers and
pedestrians. According to the statistics,
3 million tons of carbon dioxide is being
emitted annually around the world,
which has contributed to the increasingly
serious global warming risk.
Against this background, a Car Free
Day (CFD) global campaign was launched
which spread out to Indonesia including
Bandung.
The CFD program in the provincial
capital of West Java started on April 20,
2008 when a Dago Walking Day event
organized by Republic of Entertainment
to commemorate the Earth Day was held,
banning cars from entering the road
along the Dago area until Taman
Ganesha Park. Since then, the
event has been held annually.
During the third year, the Bandung
mayoralty administration officiated
the Dago Car Free Day to become a
weekly event, held every Sunday
from 6-10 a.m, affecting the main
road from Simpang Dago area to
the Cikapayang Park area.
The residents of Bandung
responded positively to the
program as many took the
opportunity to bike in the car-

free roads, stroll, and held various other

activities such as theatrical show, musical
performance, etc.
Community groups also take
advantage of the CFD for them to hold
regular gathering. Dog or reptile lovers
often showcase their pets in the CFD area.
The presence of food and drink stalls
on the sides of the roads has added to the
attraction of the CFD program in Bandung
not only for local residents but also
visitors. The CFD event could become
an alternative choice for families to hang
out on Sunday. In addition to its healthy
effect, there are also a variety of delicious
foods that can be enjoyed, said Anto, a
local resident, who often come to the CBD
area with his wife and children.
Amid the growing popularity, the CFD
program in Bandung has been expanded
to other parts of the city including the
roads along the Merdeka and Buahbatu
streets. EB

Cheap FO,
good price for quality
By Mudasir

heap Factory Outlet (FO) is a

new alternative for visitors
in Bandung to find the most
complete and newest fashion
products. Located on Jalan Ir.
H. Djuanda or Dago Street No. 111, the
fashion store offers various clothes for
kids, youngsters and adults. Aside from
having a spacious store area, Cheap FO
also has a vast parking lot.
Cheap FO was opened on
November 1, 2013. Previously, it was
called Gossip. Guests will not get
bored coming to the store because we
change the items sold there with the
new ones every month, George Martin,
Operational Manager of Kagum Fashion
Group, which owns the store.
The outlet offers latest fashion
products of best import quality at
affordable prices, according to him.
Cheap FO looks distinctive compared
other stores in the area thanks to the use of
zebra, the black and white stripe animal, as
its brand icon. If you come to the area where
the store is located, you will get attracted by
the view of the billboard carrying the name
of the store in bright yellow and the zebra
icon. People will immediately get interested
to see what is inside the store. The location
is easy to access using privately-owned cars

and angkot (minibus).

Cheap FO is a good shopping
destination for families as it offers
various types of products for kids and
their parents. Items for kids include
T-shirts, dresses, cardigans, blouses and
accessories such as wristwatch, umbrellas,
hats, hairclips etc. Items for women
include formal and non-formal dresses of
the latest fashion trend and accessories
such as necklaces, bracelets, wristwatch,
eyeglass frames and handbags. Cheap FO
also offers products for men, including
formal and non-formal dresses, shoes and
various types of accessories.
Almost all fashion products including
its accessories are available here. For
instance, we have formal and non-formal
dresses for men and women including
their accessories. In a nutshell, we have all
items that you need, George said.
According to him, 80 percent of the
items offered at Cheap FO are imported
ones and the rest are locally made
products. The stores costumers are
Bandung residents or tourists from Jakarta
and neighboring countries.
The reason we established this
store is to create a place where people
can buy quality products at affordable
prices, he said. EB

Mr. Bean Riau,

unique and funny T-shirts
By Mudasir

verybody knows Mr. Bean. The British

comedian has entertained people around
the world with his comedy TV series. The
Kagum Fashion group uses his name for one
of its fashion store or factory outlet (FO) in
Bandung. There are several stores carries the name of
the famous actor, including Mr. Bean Riau located on
Jalan Martadinata Street No. 57.
The FO, which was established on March 16, 2012,
has always attracted people of various age groups,
including youths, adults and kids. All of them are
curious to know what is offered inside the store.
Mr. Bean Riau offers various types of T-shirts, shirts,
pants, trousers, jackets and accessories such as hats,
eyeglass frames and dolls.
The products offered at Mr. Bean Riau are suitable
for people of all ages. Different from other fashion
stores owned by the Kagum group, which mainly
features imported products, Mr. Bean Riau makes
local products --- affordable but good quality local
products -- as its main merchandise.
Products at Mr. Bean Riau carries brands such as
Bandung Pisan, Life is Good, Paris Van Java, Match
Point and KPK. There are around 150,000 product

items offered by the store, including various local,

export quality T-shirts and jerseys, with prices
starting from Rp 60,000 apiece. The store is not
spacious enough but you must feel comfortable
and entertained inside thanks to the friendliness of
the stores servants and the funny and fashionable
pictures featured on the T-shirts and jerseys.
Mr. Bean is a store with a funny concept, which
makes people curious. Mr. Bean is an iconic comedian
who is known worldwide. Our target markets are
those among kids, youths and parents. The T-shirts
that we sell are only those of export quality, George
Martin, Kagum Fashions operational manager, said.
There are several Mr. Bean outlets in Bandung,
which are among others located on Jalan Cihampelas
Street No. 162, Jalan Ir. H. Djuanda or Dago Street No.
152, inside the Golden Flower Hotel on Jalan Asia
Afrika Street No.15-17, and inside Ginno Feruci Hotel
on Jalan Kebon Jati Street No. 71-75.
Of all the brands offered at Mr. Bean, one of the
most famous is Bandung Pisan, because the T-shirts
or jerseys of the brand feature unique, creative and
funny texts. Many tourists buy them due to the funny
texts, Martin said. EB

f you love nightlife, one of the options is going a comfortable

place where you can enjoy the drinks as well as the music.
Revel Lounge and Bar in North Bandung, located on Jalan
Setiabudhi Street No. 64 is one of the bars in Bandung that
provide such ambience. Its concept is lounge and bar. It has
a lounge-style interior but offers a music club sensation.
Revels patrons are mostly young people aged above 18 years
of middle and upper class, according to Tria Y Pratama, the general
manager of Revel.
One of our advantages is the beverages. Our beverages are
cheaper compared those offered in other clubs. We also offer
beverages which we concoct ourselves, such as cocktail, which
many of our customers like very much, she said.
Aside from the cheap drinks, guests can also groove on the
music and lighting system. Entry is free.

One of the favorite drinks here is the cocktail.

We plan to introduce several unique cocktails,
only available at Revel, concocted by our own
bartenders. Besides, we also offer international
cocktails, such as Litchi Martini, Long Island,
Illusion, which are all the favorites of our guests
because our prices are lower compared to others.
They say Wed better drink here because the
prices are low, Tria said.
Revel opens everyday from 10 PM to 4 AM.
It has a program called Revel University which
provides a 30 percent discount to university
students who bring their student cards. The type
of music played in the bar is varied. On Mondays,
Tuesdays, and Wednesdays, guests are entertained
with music played by different deejays each
day. On Thursdays, it has programs called I Love
Revel or Ladys Night, during which guests are
entertained by Bandungs local deejays. Different
from the other days, on Fridays and Saturdays, the
bar has special events.
On Fridays, we present second-line national
deejays and on Saturdays, national or international
deejays, she said.

Guests may also enjoy bottle juggling attractions

performed by the bartenders while they are
concocting drinks
Aside from cocktails, Revel also offers a variety
of other beverages such as Jack Daniels, Red Label,
Martel and varies types of wine and beers, including
red beer. The prices of cocktails are between Rp
75,000 and Rp 150,000 a glass
During the weekdays, the bar attracts between
150 to 300 guests per day, while during the
weekends, the number of guests may increase to
between 400 and 500 people. The bar is able to
accommodate more than 500 people.
Close to Revel, there is also Platinum Lounge
and Resto which is under the same management.
Platinum opens from 4 PM to 10 PM. Drinks and
foods offered in Platinum are basically similar to
the ones offered in Revel. Platinum however has a
different concept. It targets customers aged above
30 years or young executives. The music types
played in Platinum include disco and full jazz.
Platinum has a capacity of 200 people.
So its up to you! If you come to the area, you
may choose Revel or Platinum. EB

s the year draws to an end,

many people, not only
from Jakarta, but also from
Malaysia and Singapore,
are expected to spend
their year-end holidays in
Bandung. For the fashion
enthusiasts, this time of the year would be
particularly special as the malls and fashion
factory outlets are providing huge year-end
discount, and the hotels are also coming up
with various New Years Eve theme parties
aimed at making your year-end visit a
memorable one.
Indeed, Head of the West Java Chapter
of the Indonesian Hotels and Restaurants
Association (PHRI) Herman Muchtar said that
some hotel rooms in Bandung have been

6 EXPLORE BANDUNG - DECEMBER 2013

booked for the year-end holidays, confirming

that occupancy rate this month is expected
to be higher than in the normal months.
Herman, however, said that occupancy
rate this time around is expected to top
at only around 70 percent, lower than the
80-90 percent enjoyed during the same
period of the previous years as the growth
in the number of hotel rooms outpaces the
increase in the number of visitors.
If you plan to spend these unforgettable
holidays in Bandung, you may not want to
miss some of the extraordinary programs
in hotels, shopping malls, fashion factory
outlets, cafes, restaurants, and tourist
attractions as reported by Explore Bandung
in its current main story.
Happy reading and have a nice holiday.

As the year-end approaches, Bandung, known
as a shopping paradise in Indonesia, is gearing up to welcome shopping enthusiasts from
Jakarta and other cities as well as overseas as
malls and factory outlets present Christmas

By Mudasir

ecember is a busy month,

said Marketing and
Communications Manager
of Bandung Indah Plaza
(BIP) and Istana Plaza (IP)
malls, Tubagus Feisal.
The market segment
of IP is dominated by those who celebrate
Christmas, so we have to prepare several
programs for December, he added. IP has
decided to use characters from children
TV series called Shaun the Sheep as the
main theme for the programs at the mall
this year. Who doesnt know Shaun the
Sheep?
Tubagus said that IP will bring in the
characters of the Shaun the Sheep TV
series in a program called meet and greet
Shaun the Sheep at the mall, which is
located on Jalan Pasir Kaliki Street.
He explained that IPs main focus
now is on sale program to cater to
the various needs of its customers to

10 EXPLORE BANDUNG - DECEMBER 2013

celebrate Christmas and New Years

Eve. It so happens that we have quite a
complete supply of goods (for Christmas
celebration) from general things to
specific ones such as CD, cassette, and
Christmas decorations, Tubagus said.
The idea is to make IP as the main
shopping place for the people in Bandung
to look for things required to celebrate
Christmas, he said. The mall started the
Christmas promo program on November
29, and would end on December 29. The
program includes price discount and
various gifts for customers. Customers
will not only get discount, but also gifts
from our tenants and the IP management.
Tubagus said that various forms of gifts
will be given to customers depending
on the size of transaction. There are
merchandise gifts with the Shaun the
Sheep character. There will also be
Christmas doll gift for customers making
minimum transaction of Rp 500,000.

Tenants at IP are providing price

discount of up to 70 percent for fashion
products, and during certain occasion
such as late night sale in the weekend,
shoppers will be entitled to another 20
percent discount. The peak of the promo
program at IP was scheduled for a night
sale on December 7.
Its quite early in the month. But
according to Tubagus, based on
experiences in the previous years,
Christmas shoppers usually make their
shopping early in the month as they
would focus on the Christmas celebration
and New Years Eve later in the month.
Their shopping activities will peak in the
second week (of December) as in the third
and fourth week, they will focus on the
family affairs and religious (activities),
Tubagus said. Its quite a different
character with Idul Fitri shoppers as
shopping activity tend to peak as the Idul
Fitri celebration gets closer.
Aside from being a center for fashion
products, the IP mall, which has 200
tenants, also provides F&B products,
accessories, and health and beauty
services as well as entertainment facilities
including playing arena for children.
There are four peak sales seasons for
shopping malls in Bandung including start
of the school year, Chinese New year, Idul
Fitri and Christmas.
The busiest period for IP, however, is
during Christmas season, when the mall
holds regular events for children such as
magic show, and late night sale program
for the parents.
IPs target is to increase the sales at
each shop. The first thing is to bring in
the traffic, the right crowd, Tubagus said.
Meanwhile, BIP mall, which is located
on Jalan Merdeka Street, is not too
aggressive in capitalizing the Christmas
season. The mall does not have late night
sale program as shopping activities at the
mall during the season are not as brisk as
during the Idul Fitri season, Tubagus said.
Aside from malls, another alternative

apparel products in Bandung is the
fashion outlets (or better known here as

provide Christmas and year-end sale
programs.
Several FOs including Kampung Kaos,
Residence Factory Outlet, Outlet Rumah
ABG, Cat Woman, Aladin, Superman, Korek
Api, Mr Bean, Iron Man, KPK and Rambo
plan to launch a so-called Midnight Sale
Red Hot program from December 21-24,
starting 9 p.m. till midnight.
Meanwhile, the Anthropology Factory
Outlet plans to launch December Surprise
program, providing 20 percent discount on
all items without minimum transaction for
those celebrating their birthdays during
the month.
For those making transaction of at
least Rp 250,000 will be entitled to
a lucky dip in the form of shopping
voucher/discount.
Those are just a few of the promo/
sale programs being prepared by malls
and FOs in Bandung ahead of the yearend holidays. For sure, there plenty of
other year-end shopping prepared by the
shopping outlets in the shopping capital
of Bandung, not only popular in the
country but also in neighboring Malaysia
and Singapore. Happy shopping. EB

orn in Malang, a town in East Java on Feb. 6, 1971, Riyadi Fajar Basuki started his
career in the hotel industry from a very humble position: a waiter. Now, he is the
general manger of four-star Aston Cirebon Hotel and Convention Center, one of the
biggest hotels in the city.
The man who is affectionately called Fajar, was never reluctant to learn. When he
started his career in the hotel business in 1991 he understood that he should start with a small
step in order to achieve a big thing.
I was optimistic that a small step can lead to a big achievement, he recalled.
After serving as a waiter in a small hotel in . (dimana) for one year, he moved to a
bigger hotel, namely a four-star hotel in Indonesia of an international chain (dimana?), where
he served as a Room Service Waiter. Impressed by his performance and hard work, the
management of the international hotel chain promoted him to be a Lobby Lounge Captain in
Charge in one of its hotels overseas. To pursue on his career, he then moved from one hotel
to another in various places (dimana saja) and took various positions in the process before
assuming the top position at Aston Cirebon Hotel and Convention Center.
If you work in the hotel industry, we shall move a lot. But, you shall have a lot of experiences

Although Fajar is now holding a well-established position in the hotel industry, he is still

I usually play with my

band at New Years Eve. Many
people prefer gathering
at home to celebrate New
Years Eve. But, usually, Jalan
Dago Street is usually packed
with people celebrating New
Years Eve. Many people also go
to Lembang for dinners at caf etc to
celebrate the night together with family members.
If I am not scheduled to perform during the
night, I and my family will hold a barbequing party
at home.
As far as I know, the Kebon Seni Tamansari art
center usually has a special program to celebrate
New Years Eve. This year, the art center will present
traditional dances such as Ronggeng Gunung.

GAMES

By Mudasir

raditional games for children

are disappearing in big cities
across Indonesia as a result of
the influx of modern games.
Fortunately, in Bandung,
there are people who, concerned
with the situation, are committed to
preserving the traditional games of
West Java. They set up an organization
called Komunitas Hong with
Mohammad Zaini Alif as the founder.
He and his friends are trying to revive
the old children games after making a
research of the games.
As a result of their hard work,
the games are getting popular in
Bandung and have even become
tourist attractions. Many foreign
tourists are keen to see and even
take part in the games.

The Komunitas Hong has set up a

traditional game center called Pekarang
Ulin in Dago Pakar area. The game
center has been well known across the
country and outside Indonesia.
According to Muhammad, there
are around 850 traditional games,
including 250 in West Java, which
Indonesians loved to play in the past.
Traditional games played by
Pekarangan Ulin include patikleuk/
jajangkungan (egrang), kelom batok,
rorodaan (wheel game), engklekan
(engklek/sondah), sorodot gaplok,
perepet jengkol, gatrik, panggal
(gasing), bebeletokan (bedil jeprtet
and sumpit) and others.
Aside from traditional games, we
at Pekarangan Ulin also hold workshop
on how to make kris knife out of leaves

or make wayang golek puppet out of

the midribs of cassava leaves, which
many Sundanese children used to do
in the past, he said.
The public response is quite
good, which is indicated in the fact
that many people, either domestic or
foreign tourists, come to Komunitas
Hong everyday. They come from
Europe, America, Japan, Malaysia and
Singapore, he said.
Komunitas Hong , established in
2005, located on Jalan Bukit Pakar
Utara Street No. 35, charges visitors
Rp 50,000 (weekdays) and Rp 30,000
(weekend) in entrance fee. Visitor will
receive gifts including kolecer game,
medals made by the Komunitas Hong
kids, and wayang puppets made out of
midribs or cassava leaves. EB

AM TRANS: A suite ride

By Fachry Prayasi

long bus ride may no longer

necessarily be boring and
tiresome. Technicians and
craftsmen at Bandung, West
Java-based transportation
agent firm AM Trans have converted the
interior design of its vans and buses into a
five-star hotel-style suite, equipped with
various facilities, to make passenger feel
comfortable.
Homey wooden interior and luxurious
sofas in the buses will make you feel like
being inside a five-star hotel suite. Other
standard facilities include a bathroom
with water reserves of up 300 liters, a
parlor which can function as a meeting

room, various entertainment facilities

such as TV, karaoke set, home theater, and
a massage chair, which will help eliminate
fatigue during your trip.
With a capacity to carry loads up to 17
tons, and equipped with electricity capacity
of up to 5,500 Watt and a perfectlydesigned suspension system to minimize
shocks on the road will help ensure comfy
travel with the AM Trans buses, which are
often used for distant travel across Java,
Bali, and Sumatra islands.
AM Trans offers three types of vehicles.
The silver type is a limousine-concept Elf
van. The gold type is a minibus equipped
with various facilities used for travel on

small roads impossible for large buses.

And the platinum type is a 13 passengercapacity bus equipped with bed rooms
and multimedia player.
The company plans to launch a new
type in 2014 called the titanium, a
12-meter long bus.
According to Dadi Setiadi, General
Manager of AM Trans, some clients used
the companys armada for out of town
events. In fact, some hired the vans or
buses for up to a month. Usually, they
use our buses for ease of travel and
without having to look for hotels, he
said during an interview at the companys
office in the Dago area of Bandung. EB
