COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is a foundation for high school mathematics courses. It is a bridge from the concrete to the abstract study of
mathematics. It is a study of the language, concepts, and techniques of Algebra that will prepare students to approach and
solve problems following a logical succession of steps. Skills taught in the course lay groundwork for upper level math and
science courses and have practical uses.

REQUIRED MATERIALS
**All required materials must be brought to each and every class.**
All students will be required to have a separate notebook with at least 100 pages for Algebra 1 class notes.
Students will also be required to keep a separate Algebra 1 section in a binder for additional class handouts that do
not go into the notebook.
Scientific calculators are requiredthey will NOT be provided in the classroom and cellphones are NOT a
replacement. The TI-30X IIS is strongly recommended.

EXPECTATIONS
To ensure an equitable learning environment:
Be on timebe in your seat when the bell rings and working on the daily warm-up problem(s).
Be preparedhave all materials ready by the start of the class, including your notebook, sharpened pencils,
homework that is due, and any handouts/supplies that will be used during the period.

Be focusedkeep cell phones and music playing devices properly put away during class.

CALCULATOR POLICY
A scientific calculator is required for this class and it is expected that students bring their own calculators each day.
Calculators will not be allowed to be shared between students on tests or quizzes. In addition, cell phones and iPods are not
alternatives to calculators and will not be allowed to be used in the classroom. Any violations on a test or quiz will result in
a0 for cheating.
ABSENCES & TARDINESS
Students will have TWO school days for each excused absence to make up any homework, tests or quizzes that were assigned
during the absence(s). Previously assigned work that was due the date of an absence is due immediately upon return
additional time will result in a late penalty of 33% (see Grading Policy). It is the students responsibility to determine the
assignment(s) missed and to complete it on time, as well as get caught up on any missed notes. A student is considered tardy
to class if he/she is not in the room when the tardy bell rings and does not have a pass excusing the tardy.

GRADING POLICY

Your final grade in this class is a measure of student understanding of the following state standards:
A.APR.1; A.CED.1-4; A.REI.1, 3-7, 10-12; A.SSE.1-3; F.BF.1; F.IF.1-2, 4, 6-8; F.LE.1-2; N.Q.1-3; N.RN.1-2; S.ID.1-3, 5-9

Assignments Each assignment is due the following day, unless otherwise specified. Assignments are graded primarily on
effort and completeness of work. The maximum score late work may receive is 67% (2/3rds the original amount of total

points), and late work is only accepted until the end of the unit.
Formative Assessments This category includes class activities, exit slips, projects, and quizzes (no retakes). These
assessments allow for increased communication between the student and the teacher to evaluate how well the student is
learning before the summative assessment. Quizzes will be given weekly.
Summative Assessments Tests at the end of each unit of study will be graded problem by problem. Partial credit is awarded
to incorrect answers when work is shown and most of the process is correct. Retake tests are allowed (once per test) and
must be made up before or after school, before the following unit is completed. Students must request and fill out a Request
to Retest reflection form in which they schedule two meeting dates with the teacher (once to reflect upon and discuss the test,
and another to retake it). Both the students and a parents signature are required on this form. Ms. Stroh will always take the
higher of the two test scores.
Final At the end of each semester a final test will be given that includes all topics covered during the semester.

Online Gradebook:
Students and parents can expect an assignment to be entered into the online gradebook within one week of the assigned due
date. Homework grades are entered at the end of each unit.
AVAILABILITY
Feel free to stop by Ms. Strohs classroom before or after school to get additional help or to say hi and chat. To ensure that
Ms. Stroh is in the room when you stop by, you may want to pre-arrange a meeting time. In addition, Ms. Stroh will hold
Tutorial Tuesdays most weeks immediately following the end of 7th period for any students who want additional help or need
to make up tests or quizzes. Students who have a D or F in the class are strongly encouraged to attend Tutorial Tuesdays, or
come another day before or after school if unable to attend.
