Project Description

Our project is based on a case happened back in 1998 at the North Kowloon magistracy.
A male hawker set himself on fire in the magistracy after he was convicted of illegal hawking.
He then died two days later at the hospital. It was a shocking news in Hong Kong and we were
able to discover many Chinese news articles regarding this case. Even though this building has
been revitalized, there is still a sense of mystery behind this building that we find intriguing to
rediscover in a visual form.

We want to recreate a scene of a male hawker setting himself on fire. We will surround
the figure with caution tape to create a scene of inspection. The walls of the room will be
covered with Chinese calligraphy. Hand-written Chinese calligraphy on rice paper will create a
mysterious ambience, unfolding a narrative of this event. The case reported only in Chinese will
create a sense of further mystery to non-Chinese speaker.

Site Description

We are planning to use either room 406 or room 407, with all the chairs and tables
removed. As these two rooms are more of a square form and the rooms are quite big, therefore,
the audience will have enough space to explore around the room and walk around the dead
body in the center so that they can look at it in all different angles.

Backup

For the backup, we are considering to this area where it is located located on the first
floor of staircase 3. Similar layout, but layout for Chinese calligraphy will be changed.

Budget

Newspapers----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------No cost
Plaster-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------$30/1kg
Chinese Paper-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------$30/1 roll
Chinese Brushes------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------$5/pcs
Chinese Ink-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------$21/180ml

Glow in dark paint---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------$30/1bottle

*For newspaper, we will be using old newspaper.

Installation process

We will create a base to place a figure made out of plaster and burned newspaper, then
surround the dead body figure with caution sign tape.

Walls of the room will be covered with handwritten Chinese calligraphy, the Chinese
calligraphy would be written on the Chinese paper with ink, and the content of the calligraphy
will be articles about the case where the man set himself on fire. We will then put up the
calligraphy with poles as support.
