Special Products
1. Product of a monomial and a binomial
a ( c +d )=ac+ ad

Example:
3x(x + 4) = 3x . x + 3x . 4
= 3x 1 + 1 + 12x
= 3x 2 + 12x
RULES:
1) Monomial is outside the parenthesis (bracket).
2) Binomial is inside the parenthesis.
3) Use a distributive property to open the parenthesis.
4) Distributive property ---> Multiply each term of the parenthesis
by the monomial keeping the addition or subtraction sign same.

2. Sum and Difference of Two Similar Binomials

2
2
(a+b)( ab)=a b
Example:
x 2
2 2
( 2x ) ( 2+ x ) =
4x

RULES:

1. The first term squared.

2. The second term will always be negative, and square
like in the first term.

3. Square of a Binomial
(a+ b)2 =a2 +2 ab+b 2
(ab)2=a 22 ab+b2

Example:
y3 2
x 2 2 +2 ( x 2 )( y 3 ) +
x 2 y 3 2=

x 42 x 3 y 3 + y 6

RULES:
1. Square of the first term.
2. Twice the product of the first &last terms.
3. Square of the last term.

4. Product of Dissimilar Binomials: FOIL METHOD

( a+b )( c+ d ) =ac +ad +bc +bd
Example:
( 7 x3 ) ( 2 x +4 )=14 x2 +22 x12

RULES:
1. Multiply the First terms in each bracket.
2. Multiply Outer terms and Inner terms.
3. Multiply the Last terms in each bracket.
5. Cube of a Binomial

(a+ b)3 =a3 +3 a2 b+3 a b 2+ b3

3

(ab) =a 3 a b+3 a b b
Example:
5 3
5 2
2 m2 33 (2 m2 )
2 m 25 3 =

8 m660 m4 +150 m 2125

RULES:
1. Cube of the first term.
2. Thrice the product of the square of the first term &
the second term.
3. Thrice the product of the first term & the square of
the second term.
4. Cube of the last term.

6. Square of a Trinomial
2

a+b +c =a +b + c +2 ab+ 2bc +2 ac

Example:
z 2+2 ( 3 x )(2 y ) +2 ( 3 x )(2 y )+2(2 y )( z)
2 y 2 +
3 x 2+
3 x+ 2 y + z 2=

9 x 2+ 4 y 2 + z 212 y +6 xz 4 yz

Twice the product of the first & the second terms.
Twice the product of the first & the last terms
Twice the product of the second & the last terms.

Multiplication of Polynomials
Example:

( 3 x 4 ) ( 4 x2 ) =( 34 ) ( x 4 x 2 )
12 x 6
