Unit 1
CLO: Students will be able to ____________ several ways for writing a ratios. Learn methods for
solving proportions and solve problems by writing and solving proportions.
Opening Exercise
1. You know that a watermelon weights 10 lb on earth and 1.66 lb on the moon. You also know
that a flower weights 5 lb on earth and 0.83 lb on the moon. How can you use these ratios to
figure out the following:
a. An object weighs 30 pounds on Earth. How much will it weigh on the Moon?
Explain.
b. An object weights 30 pounds on the Moon. How much will it weigh on Earth?
Explain.

Mr. Pullutasig
A proportion is an equation stating that two ratios are equal. Here are some true proportions using
the integers 3, 5, 9, and 15.
9 3 15 3 15 9

=
15 5 9 9 5 3
You can check that the proportions are true by finding the decimal equivalent of each side. The
proportion
3 5
=
15 9 is not true; 0.2 is not equal to 0.5
R 1
=
16 4 you
can replace the variable R with any number, but only one number, 4, will make the proportion true.
Step 1:
Step 2:
Step 3:
M 56

*You can check that the solution is correct by replacing M with 8 and making sure the resulting
proportion is true.

2. When a problem involves a ratio or percent, you can sometimes solve it by setting up and solving
a proportion. Raj answered 75% of the questions on the algebra midterm correctly. If he got 27
correct answers, how many questions were on the test?
