Procedure for Fire Water

Max. Demand Calculation

Doc. No.: PCD-SF192

1. Preface
The present document is intended to outline the procedure to prepare of
calculation note for Max. Water Demand.
2. Applicable Documents
The following documents have to be obtained by the Project Lead
Engineer and referred to by the Engineer, prior to prepare the hydraulic
calculation:

Design Basis

Project references

Piping drawing.

3. Definitions
Project lead engineer is the lead engineer directly responsible for the
performance of activities of the project, set forth by the project manager
and/or head of the department.
Engineer is the engineer responsible to calculate under the direct
supervision of the project lead engineer.
4. Overview
For calculation of fire water network is need to determine of worst case,
which use most of demand in network.
Therefore all of equipment, buildings and other fire water consumer
must be listed.
5. General Requirements
For which are listed in item No. 2 shall be available.
The project Lead Engineer is responsible to obtain and ensure that the
Engineer uses the latest revision/edition of the mentioned documents.

After preparing this document by engineer, the project lead engineer is

responsible to thoroughly check and confirm it and maintained document
has to be final approved by project manager and/or head of department.
6. Procedure
6.1. General

The aims of document is to determine the water demand for network

calculation fire protection facilities shall be designed by considering as
single major fire philosophy in ordinary hazard complex and two major
fire philosophy in high hazard complexes, as follows:
a) Design major fire philosophy means that the fire protection facilities
shall be designed to combat a single major fire occurred in the complex
at any place in a single area. All the facilities shall be adequate.
b) Two major fire philosophy means that the fire protection facilities shall
be designed to combat two major fires occurred simultaneously, at two
places anywhere in the complex. All the facilities shall be adequate.
It is clear, when the network be work well at worst case, it will be work
in other cases simply too.
Therefore, this calculation is used to fined the required consumption and
then the most demand.
6.2. Codes and Standard

The calculation has been conducted generally in accordance with the

lastest edition of codes and standards by national fire protection
association (NFPA)
6.3. Fire Water Requirement

Two of the largest flow rates calculated for different section as shown
below in the case of two major fire philosophy in high hazard complex,
and on e largest flow rate for single major fire philosophy in ordinary
hazard complex.

6.3.1. Fire water requirement in largest tank farm of the complex

shall be calculated
a) Water requirement for cooling of tanks, maximum three tanks other
than under fire, shall be considered.
b) Water flow calculated for applying foam on a single largest tank under
fire shall be considered.
c) Fire water flow rate for supplementary stream shall be based on using
4 single hydrant outlet and 1 monitor.
Total water requirement shall be (a) + (b) + (c).
6.3.2. Fire water requirement for tank farm area of the pressurized
storage vessels
a) Water requirement for cooling of the pressurized storage vessels.
b) Water requirement for supplementary hose shall be calculated based
on Clause
6.3.1 (c) above.
Total water requirement = (a) + (b).
6.3.3. Water requirement in process units
a) Water requirement of spray system in unit.
b) Water requirement for minimum 2 monitor + 2 single outlet hydrants
at a time.
c) Supplementary water requirement as per Clause 6.3.1. (c) above.
d) Bigger units may be divided in deferent segments to reduce the
quantity of water for fire breaking and proper safety distances.
Total water requirement (a) + (b) or (b) or (d), whichever is more.
Similarly for other segments like buildings, loading and unloading areas,
the water requirement shall be calculated
Maximum water requirement shall be calculated, based on above
parameters and considered as maximum design flow.
