SHORT COURSES IN ECOTOXICOLOGY

& PESTICIDE RISK ASSESSMENT

n increasing number of chemical substances are being

released into our environment. Developing countries
are particularly affected with high contamination, but often
have inadequate control mechanisms and insufficient
resources for risk assessment. Eco.Trac offers a variety
of topics dealing with the environment, human health and
chemicals. The courses are always interactive and are built
on case studies in Africa to provide the participants with
hands on examples.
Eco.Trac in collaboration with the Institute of Continuing
Education of the Open University of Tanzania is organizing
three short courses as follows:

1. Aquatic Ecotoxicology

This course will provide students with a theoretical and

applied approach to the science of ecotoxicology. Topics
to be covered are: routes of exposure and mechanisms
of action of major pollutants, methods for testing and
measuring ecotoxicity and linkages between effects at
different levels of biological organization and emerging
areas of ecotoxicology (pesticides, pharmaceuticals,
nanoparticle), including in-depth case studies and
biomonitoring approaches.

2. Pesticide Risk Assessment

This course gives an overview of ecotoxicological risk

assessment with a focus on pesticide risk assessment
according to European Legislation in aquatic ecosystems.
The course is divided into four modules, which are the back
bones of the risk assessment process, namely; Problem
Formulation, Exposure Assessment, Effect Assessment
and Probability Assessment.

researchers, scientists, academics, students and any

interested part from universities, Government, Industries,
NGOs and the general public.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of these courses, participants are expected to
be able to:
Comprehend the principles of ecotoxicology and
the relation between exposure and toxicity levels
of chemical substances.
Formulate the problem and identify different instruments to conduct simple characterization of exposure and effects of pesticides.
Develop skills in the design, implementation and
interpretation of studies to measure the impact of
chemicals in the environment.
Added Advantage
Participants may be linked to researchers in Germany for
future research collaborations.
About the Course Facilitator
The Course will be facilitated by Dr. Silke Bollmohr.
Dr. Bollmohr has 15 years experience in pesticide risk
assessment. Since she worked for government and
academia in South Africa, for consulting in Germany and
for NGOs in Italy and Germany, she can reflect the different
interests and point of views from all different sectors
involved in risk assessment. She has developed protocols
for pesticide risk assessment in several countries and has
served as an ecotoxicologist on different projects in the
DRC, Zambia, Kenya, Tanzania and Sudan.
