Determining the Solubility of an

Unknown
Salt at Various Temperatures

Purpose
The purpose of the experiment is to determine the solubility of
unknown salt in water at various temperatures and observe the temperature
and solubility relationship by plotting the data.

Result
Concentration of saturated solution = (Experimental mass of salt grams) x
100
(Experimental Volume of water in mL)
Solubility, grams of salt per 100 mL of water = (3.04 g) x 100
(3.00 mL)
= 101.3 g/ml

Result shows the relationship between temperature and solubility of

salt when dissolved in the water. The solubility of given salt is 101.3g/100ml
and saturation temperature is 53C. By increasing the water in the test tube
from 3.0 milliliter (ml) to 6.0 milliliters (ml) the temperature of saturated
solution decreased from 53C to 25C. Our final result show the solubility is
directly proportional to the temperature which means that if you have a high
amount of salt in your water, it can a long time or require a higher
temperature to dissolve the salt vice versa. The solubility of salt decreased
from 101.3g/ml to 50.6g/ml.

Discussion
The solubility of a given solute is defined as an amount of solute that
will dissolve in solution at given temperature. For aqueous solutions,
solubility is typically reported in units of grams of salt per 100 mL of water (g
salt/100 mL H2O).
There are number of observation made while performing the
experiment. The crystals were completely dissolved at 79C during first trial.
The temperature of the beaker is 15C more than of salt solution. Stirring
was carried while heating the solution to ensure that all the salt has been
dissolved in the water and also during the cooling of solution in order to note
any formation of crystals. Due to unavailability of stirring rod thermometer

was used for stirring. While stirring the solution some of the crystal formed
and attached with thermometer. The solution was cooled by the Ice water
when volume was 5.0 mL. The most significant one is that they are some
crystal seen on the top end of the test tube which caused error in our
readings.
Our final Result is affected by various error mainly due to crystals that
were not dissolved in the solution as they were sticking with the test tube
and as well as thermometer. While measuring the salt solution the weight
balance reading was fluctuating. While using the ice water the crystals
formation was sudden due to rapid decrease of temperature.

Conclusion
There are three main factors that control the solubility of the solute
and they are temperature, nature of solute or solvent and pressure. In this
experiment we observed that the solubility of given solute decreases with
decrease in temperature. We also know that the temperature at which you
heat the salt solution makes a difference when youre trying to find the
solubility of any kind of salt because any some phase the solution will
become super saturated.
