where she taught for two years. She pursued an advanced
degree and received her master’s in anthropology from the
University of Pennsylvania.
One of Sister Nancy’s favorite titles for Mary is Mater
Dolorosa (Mother of Sorrows). Sister Nancy has known
tragedy in her own family. Her niece, Aimee Willard, was
brutally murdered on June 20, 1996. Like Mater Dolorosa,
she has stood by her sister, Gail Willard, throughout the
ordeal of her daughter’s death and the murder trial of the
man guilty of the crime. Sister Nancy has taught classes on
the church’s moral teaching on the death penalty, and she
has lived that teaching in a way most people will never be
called upon to do, standing firmly and publicly against the
death penalty upon the 1998 conviction of the murderer of
her niece.
Her own struggle with cancer began in October of 1999.
She was not declared cancer free until November of 2007
(although she still receives preventive chemotherapy for
the disease). Throughout the duration of her illness, she
had often said, “I treat my cancer as if it is a chronic disease
that I must live with.” She was undaunted and arranged the
management and treatment of her illness so that it would
have the least possible impact on her teaching schedule.
One year that she had lost all her hair due to chemothera-
py, her students joined her in wearing hats and scarves as
testimony to traveling her journey with her. She has also
stated that she is alive today because of “prayer and poison”
(the poison being the ravages of her chemotherapy).
According to colleagues and former students, “Sister Nancy
