IntroductiontotheWings

Prakriti:

Prakritiisaninitiativewhosepurposeisdevelopingasocietywhichbelievesinsustainable
developmentandlivinginharmonywithothercreatureswesharethisearthwith.Thiswingbelieves
inthecollectiveresponsibilityanddutyofallindividualsandorganizations,irrespectiveofclasses,
towardsconservationofnaturalresourcesandbiodiversity.

Pragati:

Pragatiisasocialinnovationwingthatworksontheprinciplesofservingthesociety.Oursocietyis
facingvariouseconomic,environmentalandsocialproblems.Thewingbelievesthatinnovationsare
thekeytotackletheseproblemstoimproveourcommunities.Basedonthesebeliefs,thewingshall
workoncreating,developingandimplementingpracticesaswellasprovidinginnovativesolutionsto
someofthecommonproblemsthatexistnow.

semakesureyouhavestayfromaroundMay15toJuly7,2016beforefillingupthe

1)Reducingair-bornediseasesincommunity:

ProjectMentor:ProfessorSachidanandTripathi(EEMdepartment)

UsinguniquedatafromtheAerosolMassSpectrometer,whichisonlypresentinourlaboratoriesin
allofIndia,weshalltrytodevelopasophisticatedcodeforreal-timesourceidentificationfor
commonair-pollutants.Oncedoneitcanbeavaluabletoolforairqualitymanagers.

Theprojectshallworktolinksanitationpracticestoairpollutionandhealthbyperformingadvanced
airsamplingofbbi-aerosolsandlookingintotheirdiseasecausingpotentials.Theprojectshallstudy
thedirectandindirecteffectsofsuchpollutants.

ProjectMentor:

ProfessorAbhasSingh(CEdepartment)

Thisprojectshallstartbyimplementingwasteseparationideasinthecampus,bychangingthe
structureofwastedisposalmethodswecurrentlyuse.Thisshallincludeaninvestigativereportabout
thecurrentwastedisposaltechniquesinIITKanpur,andraisemoneyforchangingtheprocedure.

Asecondpartoftheprojectshalllookintotheefficientuseofthesegregatedwaste,andthe
possibilityofreusingthedifferentkindsofwasteinthecampusfordifferentprojects.Solutionsfor
biodegradablewasteaddressalcanbeimplemented,andthosefornon-biodegradablewastecanbe
studied.

Anotherpartoftheprojectshallworkonthemeanstoreducethewasteinthecampus,andthe
mannerinwhichIITKanpurcanmoveclosertoazerowastecampus,eitherinisolation,orwithhelp
fromthenearbycommunities.

3)ElectricityConsumption

ProjectMentor:ProfessorSandeepAnand(EEdepartment)

Thisprojectshalllookintotheavailablealternativestoelectricityconsumptiondevicesandthe
presentstateofelectricconsumptioninthecampus.Thisshallbeacompletestudyofthevarious
regionsofthecampus.Amaximumof3peopleshallbeshortlistedforthisproject.

Thisprojectshalllookintotheefficientuseoftheexistingresourceswehaveincampus.Thisshall
lookintothesolarenergyconsumptionofthecampus,andintowayswecanimplementnewdesigns
foreffectiveenergyusage.

Theprojectshallalsolookintotheeffectivemeasurementoftheelectricunit,andpresentittothe
campuspopulationinamannerthattheycanunderstand.Itshalllookintothecurrentpartsofthe
electricbillandthewaythesearemeasured,andfindbettermethodsifpossible.Amaximumoftwo
peopleshallbeshort-listedforthisproject.

AnothersectionunderthisprojectshalllookintotheenergycrisisofNorthIndiabylookingatthe
energyconsumptionandproductioninKanpur.Theprojectisbasicallyinvestigative,andshalltryto
lookintothelossesofelectricitydistributionsectorsinthecity,theirstakeholders,theviewsofthe
peoplealongtheseissues,andthesocio-politicalfactorswhichguidethisproblem.Asignificantpart
oftheprojectshallalsoincludeidentifyingtheroleofIITKanpurinaddressingthisproblemthatthe
cityfaces.Thisprojectshallhaveamaximumofathreemembers.

4)RainwaterHarvestinginIITKanpur:

Thisprojectshallincludeasurveyofthecommonrainwaterharvestingprocessesthatareemployed
indifferentplacesinourcountry,andhowourHallsandcommonareascaneffectivelyharvest
rainwaterthismonsoon.

Apartoftheprojectshallconcerndesigningefficientsystemsforharvestingrainwaterinthecampus
andunderstandingthestructureoftheabioticenvironmentofKanpurforefficientrechargeof
primarywatersources.

5)IrrigationandHorticulture
ProjectMentor:ProfessorIshanSharma(MEdepartment)

Irrigationinfarmlandsisanationwideproblem.ThecostforirrigationthroughGovernmentprovided
meansisless,andyetprivatelyfundedirrigationisacommonproblemforfarmersinthefaceof
waterscarcity.

Theprojectshalllookintowaterconsumptioninirrigationandhorticultureprojectsinandaround
thecampusandidentifythevariousproblemsassociatedwithsuchpractices.Findingbettermeansof
irrigationpracticeswillbethefinalgoalofthisproject.

6)CampusAesthetics
Thisisaprojectwhereweshallsimultaneouslyworkonconvergingtwointerestingfieldsofstudy-
campusaestheticswithcampusutility.Theprojectshallinvolveintroducingobjectsofutilityin
campusunderthecurrentstructureinthemostvisually-pleasingwaypossible,inthemost
cost-efficientwaypossibleandintheleasttime.

Tobeginwith,weshallidentifythevariousproblemsfacedbysectionsofthecommunityalloverthe
campus,andtryandimplementsomesolutionsinthisregard.Thesolutionspresentedmustbeviable
andeffective,bothpracticallyandfinancially.

Thisprojectdemandscreativityandinterestinlearningmoreabouttheneedsofdifferentpartsofthe
campuscommunity.Afewthingsdefinitelyworthmentioninginyourvisionfortheprojectwouldbe
thechangesyouwouldliketoseewithinIITKwalls.

7)WaterscarcityinBundelkhand

ProjectMentor:ProfessorShivamTripathi(CEdepartment)

ThisprojectshallinvolvefrequenttripsthroughoutsummerstoHamirpurareaofBundelkhandto
understandtheproblemofwaterscarcitythereinthecontextofthegeographyandthechemistryof
theland,aswellasthesocialandpoliticalimpactthatarecausingalarge-scalemigrationoutofthat
place.

Thisshallbeanon-siteprojectandshallinvolveaprojected5-memberteam,whichshallbe
responsiblefordesigningcatchment-correctionmechanismsforthevillagesfacingrainwater
retentionissues.Aninitialtaskherewouldbetotakeeffectivesurveys,whichshallsoonbefollowed
byimplementationoftheprojectideas.

Thisprojecthasbeenextendedtoincludedesignsofacarrierforwaterbarrelsoverlongdistances.
Suchadesignisalreadyinplacebuttherearecertainissueswithitsuseintheterrainwefacein
Hamirpur.Thispartoftheprojecthasnovolunteerrestrictions,andgroupsarewelcomedforthe
implementationoftheidea.

Anotherinterestingextensionoftheprojectincludesidentifyingpotentialreforestationtechniques,
andusingsolardistillationofsoilmoisturetogrowseedlingsindrought-affectedareas.

ThetargettimeistillJulythisyearbecausetheteamalreadyworkingontheprojectistargetingthis
yearsmonsoons.CivilEngineeringcandidatesarepreferable,thoughpeoplefromalldepartmentscan
apply.ThisprojectshallencompassalotofdepthintoruralIndiansocietyinanenvironmental,social,
economic,politicalandnaturalcrisis.
