Dear Room 7 Parents and Guardians,

September 2016

Welcome to Grade 3! My name is Mrs. Lori Short and I am thrilled to be your

childs teacher this school year. This is my second year teaching at Coventry Hills
and my 13th year teaching in the Calgary Board of Education. In my years of
teaching, I have taught kindergarten, as well as grade one, two and three.
I hope to bring lots of enthusiasm and fun to our classroom this year through
engaging and authentic tasks. I am passionate about engaging students in
meaningful assignments throughout the vast curriculum. I encourage students to
build a strong community, work well with others but also have the opportunity to
function in smaller groups or individually as so fits their learning style. I am
aware of the importance of having solid routines and expectations and build this
into our classroom culture everyday. Grade 3 is filled with lots of interesting and
engaging curriculum that allows students to explore and expand their learning.
Please see the curriculum at a glance chart for grade three.

Communication: I strongly believe that open communication between home and
school is essential for your childs success. Our classroom blog is the best way for
you to stay up to date on daily activities and classroom information. Email is the
best way for you to contact me with questions, concerns or information regarding
your child. My email is lmshort@cbe.ab.ca Any forms or notes will be sent home
in the yellow folder. Please check your childs backpack daily and return yellow
folders each day.
Homework/Home Reading: Students are expected to read 20 minutes or more
each night. In grade 3 we do not have a home reading program where students
select school levelled books and bring them home weekly. Students are expected
to choose books that they are interested in either from the school library or
their bookshelves at home for home reading. We are looking into an online reading
program called RAZ kids. Once this is solidified, more information will be come
home.
Homework may be sent home if it is not completed in class. Homework is a way for
children to learn organizational skills and to continue to develop responsibility and
accountability in order to ensure that they are keeping up with their studies.
Thank you for helping support your childs learning at home!
Reading: This is expected nightly for 20 minutes or more. I strongly encourage
you to sit with your child and listen to them read as well as ask them questions to
ensure understanding. Remember that reading isnt just books your child can
read fiction and non-fiction, chapter books, magazines, grocery lists, newspapers,
e-books, and even recipes!!

Spelling: I will not be assigning spelling for a weekly homework program this year
nor will there be weekly spelling tests. I will be incorporating spelling into our
daily Word Work in the classroom. The word lists that we will be working on will
be uploaded to the blog where you can access them and work at home with your
child if you wish.
Math Facts: Your child should get into the habit of practicing addition, subtraction and
multiplication math facts regularly. Grade three students are expected to add and
subtract up to 1000 and multiply and divide up to 25.
Shoes: Please ensure that your child has a pair of outdoor shoes as well as indoor
shoes. Your child will be going outside for gym throughout the year and will need
to have appropriate footwear (and clothing) for all weather conditions. Please
label shoes, backpacks, clothing, lunch kits etc.
Scholastic Book Orders: These will be made available to those who wish to order
them. I typically send them home every other month. You can now order on line.
Just go to scholastic.ca and search Coventry Hills School and Lori Short to place
your order. Once you have done your order online, please send in your order form
to me. More information will be coming to you about on-line ordering.
If you want to pay by cheque, please do not send cash, make your cheque out
to Scholastic Canada Ltd.
Classroom Supplies:
All classroom supplies have been purchased for your child by the school. They do
not need to bring in pencils, erasers, pencil boxes etc. If you child has a special
tool they would like to use and bring for home, please put their name on it and
understand they are bringing it at their own risk.
I look forward to working with your child and yourselves this year. If you have
any questions or concerns, please contact me at the school (403-777-6025) or
email me (lmshort@cbe.ab.ca)
