You are a manager responsible for introducing new employees in your organization to
their teammates. Having recently accepted a promotion, you have decided to write a
three-page memo for the new manager who will replace you. The new manager is an
accountant with limited background in group formation and communication.
In this memo, draw upon the workplace experience of your Learning Team members by
using real-life examples to help you complete the following:
Describe the five stages of group development briefly and explain how relationships form
in groups. Describe the role of group communication in this process.
Analyze barriers that may exist in group communications.
You are a junior accountant at a small accounting firm. A partner of the firm has asked
you to communicate the new SAS 112 (Statement of Accounting Standards)rules
auditors have to followregulation to certain groups and how this change would affect
them. He has asked you to create and submit a package of materials that includes the
following components:
Write a brief, one- to two-page internal memo for other accountants at the firm.
Write a one-page memo to key clients with limited accounting backgrounds.
Create a brief, five- to six-slide Microsoft PowerPoint presentation with speaker notes
for the bookkeepers of the firms clients.
Write a one- to two-page memo to your supervisor in the conclusion to your report,
describing the challenges of communicating accounting changes effectively with
different groups that would be affected by that change. What problems may occur from
poor communication?

The company with which you are currently employed is experiencing a financial crisis.
The chief financial officer (CFO) has suddenly resigned and no one is discussing the
reasons why. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is investigating your
companys accounting practices and from the documents they have requested the issue
seems to concern revenue recognition. Rumors are beginning to circulate that suggest
inappropriate behavior on the part of your company. The organization is a publicly
traded company and, as such, the company is required to issue a public notice
concerning the sudden vacancy of the CFO. As a certified public accountant (CPA) on
the team drafting the notice, you are involved in communicating the current situation to
the general public.
Write a press release. You may conduct research to find examples of public notices of
this same nature. Use the examples to determine how you will format your press release.
Write an accompanying internal memo no more than two pages in length to your
manager that includes the following:
Outline what your company is legally required to do.
Explain the value of the public communication in this situation.
Examine the balance between calming external stakeholders and the ethical
considerations of providing all the information that is required by the SEC.
How the perception of the press release will affect public opinion
