EVART Sandy Szeliga of the

Evart Area Historical Society
and Mark Wilson, Evarts director of the public works department presented a slide show to
the council members regarding
the benefits of listing Forest Hill
Cemetery on the National Register of Historic Sites.
Szeliga told the members of
the council the listing would
make it possible to apply for additional grants for maintenance
and preservation of the cemetery, the purchase of preservation and repair supplies and
training for preserving historical sites.
Szeliga explained the process
for doing some of preservation
work. Foundations need to be
repaired before stones are reset
properly with the use of a setting compound.
Some grave stones present
a danger to cemetery visitors
because they are in danger of
falling, Szeliga said. The council
granted permission for Szeliga
and Wilson to start the process
to list the cemetery.
Also at Tuesdays meeting,
city manager Zack Szakacs told
the council members Wolverine

In other action, the council

formal action on the Hemlock

Mayor Casey Keysor, B.J. Foster

Evart drive-in finishing 50th year in business

EVART Mid morning

on Labor Day. Outside, an
even flow of traffic motors
by the restaurant on U.S.
10, Evarts main thoroughfare. Inside the headquarters of Mishlers Drive-In,
a crew of prep cooks busily
prepare for the day ahead.
Soon a handful of customers, precursors of the
crowds to come, begin
trickling in. The brace of
waiting carhops spring
into action.
At Mishlers, things are
done the old-fashioned way.
Carhops offer menus, take
orders and deliver food
to automobiles on trays
that perch on half-rolleddown windows. Between
customers, they sweep the
pavement,wipe the tables
and keep salsa and Ranch
Dressing containers filled.
Hamburgers, chili dogs,
fried mushrooms, chicken
dinners and other foods
arrive on the trays. So
do mugs of root beer and
other beverages. Although
to-go cups are available,

at Mishlers, a person who
wants to finish his soft
drink there can drink from
a real mug.
Yes, theres a lot of history at the old root beer
stand. Opening in 1953,
the business soon became
an A&W restaurant.
After changing hands at

least twice, the parents of

the current owner, Steve
Mishler, took control in
1966. The owners soon gave
up their franchise.
Corporate owners began
pressuring franchisees to
make expensive changes
to their buildings. I knew
Dad wasnt going to do

that, the younger Mishler

said. So the business continued on without the franchise name.
Outwardly, little
changed. A paint job gave
the building a different
color. New mugs replaced
the ones with the A&W
logo on them.

The important elements

remained the same. The
Mishlers still made their
own root beer at the site.
A customer could still pull
up and order a cold mug
of root beer and a juicy
burger without turning off
the ballgame or the music
on the radio. Carhops still

greeted customers with a

friendly smile. Satisfied
customers still lefttips on
their food trays. A tap on
the car horn or a car engine firing up still alerted
the carhops to come collect
a tray.

What WAS it?

You know the rule: no

wearing of white after Labor Day.
So: fold em or hang em
up to get those clothes out
of your summer fashion
options.
Hanging is the clue to
the identity of the object
in our latest photograph.
The plastic is just flexible
enough to clip over the top
edge of your laundry room
or bedroom door (the bottom right of our picture;
the flat one inch rectangle
rides atop the door itself
and is clipped into place
with the angled back
piece). Once positioned
there, the ski-like shape
provides the zone for hangers. The up-turned end of

the ski, is a simple clothes

hook. The small cross bars
on the ski are to keep the
hangers from bumping up
too closely to one another
(providing for air circulation if you are hanging
damp clothes directly from
the wash). The large curving bar that ultimately
slopes down to rest on
the ski, is the manufacturers idea of how to keep
the hangers from jumping
off when the door in use is
opened or closed.
Dont have enough closet
space? Need a hook in the
bathroom for bathrobes?
Or need to air dry some
laundry or snow-covered
jackets before hanging
them into the closet? That
is where this over-the-door
hanger comes into play.

Drive in serves homemade root beer

Continued from page 1
One day, of course, the
elder Mishlers decided to
retire. Steve and his wife,
Deb, decided to take over
the business. That was in
1990. Steve dropped out of
college just a semester shy
of a degree in business
administration. He never
looked back.
Steve and Deb made a few
changes. They expanded
their assortment of menu
items. They added more
picnic tables for those who
wanted to dine outside
their cars. (The business
has no inside dining area.)
And they knew they had a
winning formula. Customers kept coming back.
The drive-in, in fact,
became known far outside
Osceola Countys U.S. 10
corridor. Steve has heard
reports of people far from
the area knowing of the
restaurant. Ask him the
reason for the outsized
reputation of his business
and hell venture a couple
of guesses. People like the
homemade root beer, of
course. And they like the
pizza burgers. Steve has
heard from a lot of people
that pizza burgers are a
rarity. And theres the carhops, of course. They give
the business its friendly
face.
A big factor, though, may

Difficult

Frank Young told the Ludington Record Appeal, I

immediately looked at my
watch and saw that it was a
quarter after four oclock.
I felt that something serious must be the matter
or Capt. Kilty would not
have roused us. I dressed
hastily and went down the
after stairway to the car
deck. At that time the water was washing up on the
car deck as far as the foot
of the stairs. I went and
got my boys together and
sent them down to assist in
shoving cars overboard.
Sept. 15, 1910
With great effort and difficulty, the crew dropped
nine cars off the stern,
which fell with great force
on the rail deck. By driving
another car the other, oneby-one they were dumped
into the lake. The vessel
was relieved and the stern
rose several feet. This only
bought a little time before
the water filled to even
higher levels.
At first alarm the captain ordered all hands
and passengers to don life
preservers, and the captain
also put on an air jacket in
which his recovered body
was later found.
The captain called purser
and wireless operator, Sczepanek, to send out a call
for assistance. The captain
felt the ship would make
it safely to Milwaukee, but
thought it would be safer
to have another ship standing by.
Operator Bryant was
on duty at the Ludington
station when the Number
18 appeal came in with the
distress signal, C.Q.D.
in Morse code. At first it
was thought to be fake, but
as it was repeated, it was
realized the big ferry was
in peril.
For over two hours the
station kept getting Sczepaneks appeal. He kept
calm, except the exclamation, Help for Gods sake!
as the end drew near. Bryant grew pale when in the
midst of a sentence, the
ticking ceased. He was first
to know that the ship sank
at 7:30 a.m. on the dot.
After the call for help
was made, the Ludington
station sent out the Pere
Marquette No. 17, operated
by Captain Russell, for the
rescue mission.
The rescue boat followed
closely along the sinking
ship and took swift action
when distress signals appeared. A life boat was
lowered from No.17 with
Joseph Peterson and Jacob
Jacobson, and two others to assist No. 18, but
barely had the rescue boat
touched the water before a
big wave crashed against
the ships side. Peterson

HERSEY Everything
else was getting blessed,
Dave Fowler said. He decided it was about time to
bless the things that protect people every day. Last
year, he set aside a day to
ask for a blessing for guns.
Now he will ramrod the
second annual Blessing of
the Guns this weekend.
The idea had a long genesis.
A former law enforcement officer, Fowler has
carried a gun for 40 years.
During that time, he often
prayed before going into
tense situations.
I believe in the power
of prayer, he said. So he
would pray, Please, God,
if I have to be involved in
a shooting, help me be the
best shot and the fastest.
More importantly, please
bless my guns and me so I
dont have to get involved
in a gunfight.
He eventually retired
from his law enforcement
career. Now he runs Fowlers Home on the Range, a
business offering firearms
training courses. Besides
the gun training, his business features shooting
ranges open to the public
and to law enforcement
personnel.
