Summers Still Simmering

By Katie McFadden
Labor Day may be the unofficial end of summer, but
you wouldnt know it locally.
Theres still plenty of summer
fun left.
Hurricane Hermine may
have put a damper on the holiday, but theres still another
shot to enjoy guarded beaches. Earlier this summer, the
City announced that the beach
season would be extended for
an extra week. The beaches
will be staffed with lifeguards
until Sunday, September 11.
Just be aware that guarded
beaches may be limited, as
many lifeguards have returned
to school.
The concessions are made
for summer fun and it will
continue for a few more weeks.
Caracas and Brothers at Beach
106th are open daily through
the weekend and will host
music events including Three
Sheets to the Wind starting at
6 p.m. on Friday, September 9,
a Beachfront Bugout including

several performers at 6 p.m. on

Saturday, September 10 and a
Timba Beach Party on Sunday.
The concession will also be
open every weekend through
October from noon to 9 p.m.
The Beach 97th Concession
featuring Low Tide Bar says
theyll also be open through
October, but did not respond
with a specific schedule by
press time. On Friday, September 9, Beach 97 will host a
Talent Show from 6 p.m. to 10
p.m. Show off your skills for
a chance to win cash prizes.
From 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday, groove to the tunes of
Solshyne. On Thursday, September 14, Low Tide will also
host a Crab Boil from 7 p.m. to
10 p.m. Tickets for all you can
eat crabs are available at www.
getcrabs.bpt.me ($40).
Rippers at Beach 86th also
said theyll be open occasionally throughout the month but
could not provide specifics. On
Saturday, September 10, Dred
Surfer Grill at the Beach 17th
Concession is hosting a Back 2

Campus Boardwalk Bash featuring food, drinks and a DJ to

venue. Riis Park Beach Bazaar
will still offer some food and
drink options including hot
dogs from Ed and Bevs, open
every day, plus weekend popups from Fletchers, Wildfeast
and Samesa from noon to 8
p.m. throughout September.
You can still get your frozen
fix at summer bar Connollys
for two more weekends, plus
during the week until dark.
Take advantage of the awesome
sunset views on the bay before
they move back to the beach.
Bungalow Bar is having an End
of Summer Country Night featuring Russell Dickerson at 9
p.m. on Friday, September 9, or

September 10 for a good cause,
Pouring for Parkinsons featuring live music from the RUSSO

month. On Saturday, September 17, Poseidons Parade returns and its expected to be
bigger and better. Get your nautical garb ready and register at
www.poseidonsparade.com.
The parade kicks off at noon
and goes along the boardwalk
from Beach 106th to Beach
86th. After Poseidons Parade,
check out the Honey Festival
at Beach 86th Street. From 11
a.m. to 5 p.m., you can purchase fresh honey, participate
in a tasting, see an extraction
demo, plus plenty of activities for kids. The Oyster Festival also returns on September 17 and this time it takes
place on a boat out of Thai
Rock at 3 p.m. Limited tickets
are available at Rockawayoysterfestoysteryacht.eventbrite.com.
On
Sunday,

Post-Labor Day Blazes

FDNY was hard at work
just after Labor Day when
not one, but two fires broke
out locally in the early
morning hours of Tuesday,
September 6.
Just after midnight, a call
came in regarding a highrise fire on the 5th floor of a
13-story occupied building
located at 453 Beach 40th
Street. Twenty units with
78 firefighters responded to
the scene, with the first arriving about four minutes
after the call was made. The
fire was under control by
12:35 a.m. There was one civilian who was taken to St.
Johns Episcopal Hospital
with serious, but non-life
threatening injuries due to
smoke inhalation.
The firefighters didnt have
much time to rest as at 2:55
a.m., another call came in
for a boat fire at Marina 59.
Twelve units with about 60
firefighters responded to
the call within four minutes.
Seven boats were on fire at

the marina, some which were

part of the Boatel business,
so some of the occupants
were sleeping at the time of
the blaze. Only one civilian
had a serious but non-life
threatening injury and refused medical assistance.
The fire was under control at
4:28 a.m.
Both incidents are under investigation by the Fire
Marshal.

Trees

By Lou Pastina

Ever wonder what type of

tree that is you have been admiring all these years?
Rockaway is limited in the
type of trees that grow here,
mostly because of the sand
and the wind and the salt air.
But there is enough variety
to capture the eye. I love the
spring in Rockaway because
sometime ago the city decided to plant non-fruit bearing Bradford Pear trees, they
bloom white flowers and decorate our blocks in spring.
A long time ago the city was
big on London Plane trees.
They are related to Sycamore
trees. You know them because
they have the brown and yel-

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 8, 2016

low exfoliating bark. Sometimes they have these round,
hard, ball like things that grow
on them. As kids, they were
great to throw at each other.
Since Sandy so many neighbors have invested time, effort and money to spruce up
their homes and have added
trees to beautify their yards. I
love the late blooming Crape
Myrtles that have red and pink
flowers, as do the Hydrangea trees that blossom in late
summer.
We have two types of border trees, the Leyland Cypress, which grow really tall,
and the Arbor Vitae, which
are great for creating separation. Breezy has those low lying Pine trees which seem to
have withstood the attack of
the Japanese beetles that decimated the ones in Riis Park.
Before Sandy there were a
handful of large Catalpa trees
with their very large leaves
and fruit. There used to be
one in front of the old Harbor
Light. I dont see too many
of those anymore. I am a big
fan of Birch trees, another ex-

foliating tree typically with a

brown or white bark.
What I love about trees is
that they bring color, diversity, birds, and beauty. We
need more trees in Rockaway,
but the ones we do have need
constant care and nurturing.
This was a very hot and sunny
summer, which was great, but
trees suffer under those conditions. So if you see a tree in
need, give it a hug.
What are your favorite
trees? What is the most unusual tree that you know in
Rockaway?
(Editors Note: The Lazer
didnt kill himself with this effort. He sent this from parts unknown while on vacation. Were
guessing he spent some time
with Barbara Walters. What
kind of tree are you, Lou?)

This September 11th is the 15th
anniversary of that most horrific
day. It was said then and should
be said forever: Never forget.
Never forget the lives that were
lost; never forget the heroism of
so many; never forget that we are
one nation, indivisible. And may
we never forget to stand up and
defeat those who seek to terrorize
and do us harm. Never, ever, ever
forget.
*****
On Sunday, September 11th
there will be ceremonies at Tribute
Park. See more on Page 18.
*****
Sometimes we forget to
send praise to the good (often
anonymous) citizens among us.
We know a man cleans up the bus
stop at Beach 169th rather than
waiting for DOT or the National
Park Service and a fireman
on Beach 116th is often seen

sweeping the street well beyond

the firehouse. We know theres
a one-woman army picking up
trash on the beach in the 80s just
about every morning. Kudos for
their efforts!
*****
And kudos to the many locals
who do unofficial lifeguarding
(life saving). There are many
instances where locals rush
in to save people even when
lifeguards are on duty.
*****
Knock on wood. We dont want
to tempt fate. But what hurricane? Hermine was a gift. Some
people were calling it The Perfect
Storm. Or Best Hurricane Ever.
The weather was beautiful, no
lines at the concessions, beaches
were wide open, except to
swimmers.

at 16-22 Channel Road in Broad

at the meeting.

*****
The beaches will be open this
weekend, the season extended
by the City an extra weekend.
Because many lifeguards are back
at school or no longer available
the open beaches will be limited,
however.

Cops and PEP officers were
out in droves on Sunday telling
surfers they were not allowed
in the water. Many went in
anyway. Or were already in the
water when law enforcement
showed up. Some surfers got
summonses and will have to go to
court. Surfers live for such days
and should be free to ride the
waves. Common sense should
guide surfers about whether they
are experienced enough to go
out in big surf. We cant police
everything! And safety is too
often a cop out. You want people
to be safe? Outlaw cars. Order
people to stay inside all the time.
Enough with the nanny crap.

Fifteen years later, but never forgotten. Its been so long
that children who werent
even born when the planes
hit the World Trade Center,
will now be learning about
what happened that day in
history class. Brian Flanigan of Breezy Point wants to
ensure that todays children
and future generations understand what happened on
September 11, 2001 and to
continue to honor the lives
of those who were lost, especially the many locals. Hes
starting a new tradition to
keep their memory alive. The
First Annual Breezy Point Remembrance Race is Saturday,
September 10.
Flanigans best friend was
Pete Mulligan. Mulligan,
along with Mike Andrews,
Charlie Heeran, Chris Grady
and Matt Burke all worked
for the same desk with Cantor
Fitzgerald in the World Trade
Center. Flanigan also once
taught at a school in Broad
Channel along with firefighter Richie Allen. They were
just a few of the more than
3,000 people that were killed
in the terrorist attacks 15
years ago. For the small communities of Breezy Point and
Rockaway, the loss of life was
tremendous. For those who
lived it, its impossible to forget, but Flanigan hopes that

new generations also come to

understand what happened
that day and will continue to
honor those who died. To do
that, hes bringing families
together for a new memorial event in Breezy Point. As
a runner himself, who ran
the NYC Marathon in 2011,
Flanigan thought it would be
a nice idea to hold a memorial race between the Roxbury
and Breezy Point 9/11 Memorials.
Breezy Points First Annual 9/11 Memorial Race is a
5K family-fun run will start
at 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 10. There will be 18
trophies given for the top
runners in different age categories, but those who want to
walk the route are also welcome. Online registration is

also options to just participate in the after-party from

Alan Zwirn Is Running For Assembly

By Dan Guarino

Alan Zwirn is trying something

new. And hes jumping in with
two feet.
Zwirn wants to help the neighborhood and area he loves. He
figured the best way to make a
difference was to get elected to
public office and thats why hes
campaigning to become 23rd
District NY State Assemblyman,
the position Assemblyman Phil
Goldfeder will soon be vacating.
The district covers Rockaway,
Broad Channel, Howard Beach,
Hamilton Beach and Ozone Park.
Election Day is November 8.
Id like the opportunity to
work with the people here, he
told the Rockaway Times, to
help them move forward toward
their personal and community
goals.
The backgrounds of the residents here might be diverse, but
so many are so similar, all having
so much in common.
He describes them as family
oriented, sharing the common
threads of dreams, hopes, aspira-

tions and realities to better their

lives, and the lives of their children.
Zwirn knows that firsthand,
having raised two children in
Rockaway and lived here for 25
years. Hes had a career teaching
music in public schools, and at
Brooklyn College and the College

of Staten Island. Hes been the

athletic director for a Brooklyn
sports club, and a Mentor with
LIUs NYC Teaching Fellows. I
also served as an elected UFT
Chapter Leader for five years.
As for politics, Zwirn said, Ive
been a member of the Rockaway
Republican Club since 2008. I

was elected club President in

April, 2013.
He has been involved in the
community as well. I was a
member of the Board of Directors at West End Temple for seven
years. Ive been the line producer/stage manager for the annual Little North Pole December
street performances since 2007.
And I am an active member of
the Graybeards.
If elected, there are a number
of changes hed like to see. Expanding transportation options
is one of them. This, Zwirn said,
is key to the growth of the local
economy, and the convenience
for residents.
The promised return of the
Rockaway Ferry is a starting
point. But this should come with
schedule changes, with more
trains to Rockaway, on the A
train.
He also favors the QueensRail
plan that would provide a shorter ride to midtown Manhattan.
And the city should reconsider

the Select Bus Service (SBS) plans
being formulated, which will take
away driving lanes along sections
of both Cross Bay Boulevard and
Woodhaven Boulevard, and remove several left turnson an already overcrowded street.
Additionally, the concept of
bus riders waiting on the narrow
islands between the service lane
and the main thoroughfare worries me.
Another major challenge is safer streets and better policing.
If he is successful in his quest
he feels there are issues he can
directly address as a State Assemblyman.
State taxes and business regulations are among those. Id like to
work to lower both personal and
business taxes, as well as cutting
regulations that hamper business
growth, consistently diminishing
the opportunity for more jobs
across the state.
Zwirn said his experience in education, having taught students
in grades ranging from kindergarten to graduate school, should
qualify him for a seat on the State

Education Committee. There is a
lot to be done to improve educational services to all students.
He would also like to see legislation to end what he calls the
the culture of corruption in
Albany. I have a 5-point plan I
would submit as a starting point
to create such legislation.
Closer to home, Zwirn says,
if you own a store or shop,
youd like improved services
from local and state government. And fewer knit-picking
regulations that suppress business yet create revenues for the
government through assessed
violations.
The upgrades of a more visible police presence, more effective sanitation pick-up, improved public transportation,
and better parking options for
shoppers, would help shopkeepers and local residents immensely.
Why does Alan Zwirn want to
run for Assembly?
Working together with community groups and other elected officials, I believe many of
these changes and improvements
can be accomplished.

Mystery On The Beach

John Reinhardt wants a mystery solved. What is this thing

that washed up on the beach at
131st street Sunday morning?
Some have suggested Chupacabra, the beast of legend.
Guesses have included whale,
dolphin, bird, and dinosaur.
One person claimed it was a
skate and that they had spot-

ted it before decomposition

set in. We think that sounds
plausible but so do a few other
possibilities. Feel free to weigh
in with your expertise (thanks

DIABETES
By Peter Galvin, MD

Diabetes is associated with

multiple complications including retinopathy, as one
of my previous articles discussed. The retina is located on
the back of the eye globe and
it is where the rods and cones
are located. A healthy retina
is essential for good vision. In
diabetic retinopathy small retinal hemorrhages occur which
interfere with the retinas ability to convert light images to
nerve impulses, which go to
the brain and are interpreted
to create vision. Good diabetic
control can lessen the chances of developing retinopathy

(but cannot totally eliminate

the possibility). Poor diabetic
control can almost ensure the
development of retinopathy.
Obesity, as measured by BMI,
is associated with a higher risk
of developing diabetes as well
as it is associated with poor
diabetic control. But obesity
has never been firmly linked to
a higher risk of a diabetic developing diabetic retinopathy
(DR).
There are racial and ethnic differences in the consequences of diabetes. Several
studies have found that Asian
individuals have a higher risk
of developing hypertension,
diabetes and heart disease

than Europeans at the same

BMI. Recently, the Wisconsin
School of Medicine published
a study, done in Singapore,
which looked at the relationship between obesity and the
development of DR in Asians
with Type II diabetes. They
also looked at body fat distribution using the waist/hip
ratio (WHR). What they found
was rather surprising.
The results indicated that
obesity, as measured by BMI,
did not in and of itself correlate with an increased incidence of DR. However those
with abdominal obesity as
measured by a higher WHR
did have an increased incidence of DR. In other words
where the excess body fat was
located was a stronger risk
factor than just a higher BMI.
This makes sense as abdominal obesity is associated with
systemic inflammation, dysfunction of the cells that line
the blood vessels and thrombosis (development of blood
clots). To put it more simply
diabetics who were shaped
like an apple fared worse than

Page 13
diabetics shaped like a pear
(my wording, not the studys).
The authors of the study
suggested that more research
was needed but it is becoming increasingly obvious that
measuring obesity by BMI
alone is insufficient to truly
assess the risk of developing
obesity-related diseases and
disease complications. Measuring where the excess fat is
located using a tool like WHR
appears to provide a better assessment of risk factors.
At any rate if you are overweight the fact that you are
shaped like an apple or pear
doesnt lessen the importance of weight loss. If you
are overweight, losing weight
is probably the single most
important thing you can do
to improve your health. If
you are overweight, talk to
your doctor and a dietician
to come up with a weight
loss plan (a combination of
diet and exercise) that makes
sense for you.

Towings Just Wrong

Dear Editor:
I am writing in response to
the High Tide item about the
cars being towed at the Stop
and Shop parking lot. It is very
understandable if they tow the
cars of people who park and go
to the beach all day but to tow
the cars of people who go to the
post office is really lousy.
I wonder how many of those
people were out running errands and after going to the
post office were going to shop at
Stop and Shop or go to Ciros for
a slice or maybe hit the liquor
store for a bottle of wine.

How many moms and dads

park there and then take their
kids to Mrs. Elaine's School of
Dance? (What a great program!)
or the karate school only to walk
back across Beach Channel
Drive to food shop or buy the
kids pizza? I know I do it all the
time.
I tried calling the number
in last weeks paper (800) 7677772) but it was taking too long
to get through and I have more
errands to run. Thanks for your
time.

Army Corps Plan

Questioned
Dear Editor:
I am writing to respond to the
article about the Army Corps
plan on erosion management.
While I agree with the dune
and jetty system plan and have
been a longtime advocate for
it, the placement of the twelve
new rock jetties is where I
strongly disagree. If the twelve
new jetties are placed every
quarter mile they can stretch
all the way to the existing jet-

The Rockaway Times

ty at Beach 149th street, not to

Beach 121st street where it is
currently proposed.
By ending the new jetties
there and not Beach 149th
Street, it will leave the thinnest
part of the beach, from Beach
136th Street to Beach 146th
Street, exposed to the eastern
fetch, furthering loss of beach
and extensive dune damage.
Go look at the west side of the
jetty at Beach 90th compared
to the east side. Then check out
the lack of beach from Beach
136th to Beach 146th Streets
compared to the width of the
beach downtown, the beach
widens even more with jetties.
If the jetties are placed where
I propose, erosion would cease
up until Beach 149th and the
beach will fill-in, eliminating
the need to dredge. Let the Feds
deal with the west side, Bay 1.
If you cant see how wide the
beach is with jetties compared
to the one without, you are either blind, stupid or the 1 percenter who gets the contract
to dredge the beach every four
years. Dredging only increases
erosion. It increases the slope

of the beach and forces the

waves to break on shore, not
on the sand bar, augmenting
the erosion process. Jetties will
halt that. Otherwise the taxpayers will be forced again to underwrite the boondoggle that
is dredging. The only thing you
can compare this with is giving
some crony a government contract to dig holes and fill them
back up. Only they fill the hole
and let mother nature do the
rest. That is insane. Complete
the jetty system to Beach 149th
and send the dredge company
packing.
As for the Parks Department,
why was there no thought of
a shower and foot rinse on
every block from Beach 126th
to 149th? Talk about a gaping
blind spot. Also, why not remove the old wooden jetties
too? They are dangerous and
have injured people in the
past, and the metal poles put
up to warn people about the
wooden hazards can break
and impale unwitting bathers. Both need to go. The

James OBrien
(The Army Corp response:
The groins are only to mitigate
the erosion hot spots that are
identified in the computer erosion modeling. The groins do
not continue into the 140's because they are considered not
necessary or useful).
Dear Editor:
A question, why are they
stopping the jetties at Beach
122nd? Anyone know? Well,
I went to three presentations.
I asked "Why are you stopping at Beach 122nd?" I got
shrugged shoulders until the
last one. I was basically told
it a cost benefit situation. I
asked why they would stop on
what is one of the narrowest
parts of the peninsula? I asked if
they ever looked at the east side
then the west side of a "groin"?
Everyone knows you get a
buildup of sand on the east side
and a loss of sand on the west.
At the final meeting the gentleman finally acknowledged
that this would be the case. This
aligns perfectly with the fact
that the boardwalk elevation
at this area goes down. It was
supposed to be the same height
to the end at Beach 126th. So to
summarize, less sand and lower boardwalk equals a funnel
effect in this area. I know I'm
just a nay-sayer. We'll take what
we can get !

Zwirn Gets A Vote

Dear Editor:
After almost 50 years as a registered Democrat I'm voting for
Alan Zwirn for Assembly.
We have a Democratic candidate who has the backing of the
powerful Democratic machine.
She has been placed in this position by the political establishment. She may be a very nice
person, but if she wins, her first

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 8, 2016

obligation will be to the political powers of Queens County,
and in Albany, not our community. She will be beholden
to vote on important issues in
Albany as she is told to vote.
We cant go back to that type of
representation!
We know very well that, with
few exceptions, if an NYC Democrat wins a primary election
by one vote they are in for life.
Alan Zwirn's opponent, Stacey, did not even win a primary. She was handpicked by
the Bosses, one of them her
mother. She is not in the candidates position from outstanding accomplishments
made on her own, but from
bloodlines.
On the other hand, Alan
Zwirn, has a lifetime of work
in a difficult profession: a
teacher in the NYC Public
School system. He was not
appointed or anointed to run
for this important position by
anyone. Alan made the decision himself, and then with
the help of neighbors and
friends who know and respect him, got the backing of
the party, and went through
the difficult petition process.
He is working with no financial support other than from
local people who think well
of him. This is truly a grassroots movement. The people
working with him are not professional politicians. They are
people like you and me who
want an independent leader
who's primary obligation is to
the voters, not party bosses. I
am sure that Alan's election
will send a clear message to
all our elected officials that
this community wants results,
and we want someone who
will represent us, not their party's Bosses.

Ticket to Success
By Mike Scala

Last year, I did some law

work in Washington, DC. As a
ten-hour total daily commute
is not my idea of a good time,
I ended up renting a place in
College Park, Maryland. My
greatest escape from the long
hours in the office was the
convenient ride on the Metro. When I boarded the train,
it felt like the Long Island Rail
Road. By the time I arrived in
the city, I was, for all intents
and purposes, on the subway
-- without having to transfer.
Here in New York, we can
learn from Washington. That
is not a sentence that often appears in print (a Google search
produced no results), and perhaps for good reason. But when
it comes to transportation, it

holds true.
While it might not be feasible
to combine the railroad with
the subway at this time, we can
and should do all we can to
lower costs. The Queens Public Transit Committee fights
tirelessly for the QueensRail, a
name we created to rebrand the
former Rockaway Beach Line
more inclusively. The main
complaint about the LIRR is
its expensive fare, which helps
explain why the subway option
gained so much traction: if our
goal is to bring people together,
let's do it with the system most
can access.
There's another idea worth
supporting, and one that can
become a reality sooner. The
Permanent Citizens Advisory Committee (PCAC) to the
MTA has proposed the Free-

that includes a subway or bus
transfer, at a fare discounted
significantly from what such
trips cost now. In some cases,
the savings would approach
fifty percent. After the concept
was presented and discussed,
the Queens Public Transit
Committee voted for it unanimously.
Most compelling about the
Freedom Ticket plan is the fact
that many LIRR seats are empty, even during peak hours.
According to the PCAC's findings, twenty-three percent of
seats are unused in the morning and twenty-six percent
are vacant during the evening
between Jamaica and Penn
Station. Between Jamaica and
Atlantic Terminal those numbers rise to forty-nine and six-

ty percent, respectively. This

means more passengers can
be aboard without using additional resources. For the MTA,
it presents an opportunity to
convert unoccupied seats into
revenue.
In Rockaway, the Freedom
Ticket can provide another
practical method of traveling
to the city. In my conversations
with its architects, who mentioned they wanted to roll this
out in so-called transportation
deserts, I urged them not to be
fooled by the water on three
sides. When it comes to Rockaway's mass transit status, the
only thing missing is a cactus.
With programs like this, and
the new ferry and the eventual QueensRail, however, that is
beginning to turn around.
The infrastructure to improve our mass transit is already in place. It's now a matter of making smart decisions
to make it all work together.
Mike Scala is the First Vice
President of the Queens Public Transit Committee and cochair of the Rockaway Ferry
Committee.

Turkey Cutlets with Black Bean

Sauce and Tomato Sauce
By Sharon Feldman

Courtesy of my friend Gradita

Teahan who got this recipe from
her friend when they worked in
the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City.
Serves: 6
This is a lively pairing of pancooked slices of turkey breast
and black beans charged up with
tomatoes, chili powder and coriander. Rice, speckled with kernels of corn would be a natural
accompaniment. For dessert,
serve fresh berries topped with a
pure ripe mango or papaya and a
sprinkling of cinnamon.
2-1/2 tablespoons olive oil
**6 thin slices uncooked turkey
breast (about 1-1/4 pounds)
Salt and pepper to taste
1 onion, chopped
2 garlic cloves, shopped
green bell pepper, cored, seeded
2 teaspoons chili powder

1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

1 cup canned black beans, drained
1 cup chopped canned plum tomatoes, with their juice
cup chopped coriander (cilantro) (optional)
In a skillet, heat the oil and then
lightly brown the turkey slices on
both sides; remove turkey to a warm
plate and season with salt and pepper. Stir in the onion and garlic, and
slowly for 3-4 minutes; add the bell
pepper and chili powder, and cook

Thank you to everyone who

came to Beach Yoga on Beach
108th Street all summer long.
You are my light and inspiration. Thank you to all who support Ocean Bliss Yoga Studio,
it is an honor to serve you. I
am grateful to have your presence and constant support
on and off the mat. Our community is blessed to have this
special bond. Thank you for
everything you have taught me
and continue to teach me. It is

a humbling experience.
To be a teacher, you must be
a student for life. You are always learning from your colleagues, students, friends and
family. Everyday experiences
teach you to be who you are,
good or bad; you will rise to the
occasion and work from your
heart. It is through my life experiences that I have learned
to be authentic. Listening and
speaking from the heart is how
I choose to live. We have one
life to live in my humble opinion. I am not coming back after

for this life. This blessing, this

time to be with one another,
brothers, sisters, friends, etc.,
giving thanks for this bright,
brilliant day. There is a call for
something higher than ourselves. It is powerful and I am
happy to share these messages
every day with my students.
Well as much as I would like
to think life is so good, I am often reminded of suffering. Its
not always so warm and fuzzy.
There are really hard times for
some people and they dont
always wake up feeling joy. I
dont know the cure but I do
know if you can think of something to be grateful for it will
ease your pain. Invite a mantra into your life, such as, I am
thankful for today, may I be
happy, may I be healthy and
may I be enlightened. Repeat
the mantra over and over. It
will manifest and become you.
Or simply say thank you.
May you live your life with
a forgiving heart, may you be
kind, compassionate and generous in spirit. Thank you to all
who journey with me on this
path called life.

I die. This is it. No regrets, no

looking back, just do the right
thing.
When I teach yoga on the
beach to 100 or more students
for the Parks Department, I am
always humbled. I am grateful and respectful to everyone
who is in front of me. There
are so many students, from all
walks of life and my only regret is I cannot speak to each
and every one of you. But I
am aware of your strong presence. We are one, we have so
many names but we somehow
come together with one breath
and many good intentions.
Thank you for teaching me to
be aware of the beauty around
and within us. We witnessed
rainbows, dolphins and beautiful sunrises. I am blessed to
teach in the Rockaways. It has
been my hometown for the
past 35 years. My heart and
soul are here and I have the utmost respect for everyone.
There are many books in my
library, one of my favorite new
ones is Prayers of Honoring
by Pixie Lighthouse. On any
given page there is a Thank You

Convert
A Closet

By Artie Wallace

Here is a great DIYer project for back to school time. If

youre lucky enough to have
the extra closet space, why not
convert a closet into a desk/
work station. There are a lot of
ways to do this. We will cover
a few.
1- First thing is to empty the
closet and paint it.
2- Now plan your desk. You
can make a desk top by buying a prefab countertop and
building supports into the
closet walls, or you can make
your desktop out of finished/
sanded wood.
3- Storage: The most versatile way to add storage is using
rolling file cabinets. You can
also use old wall cabinets from
a kitchen or even build shelves
and use baskets as drawers.

4- Shelves: Most closets

have an 8 height. You should
take advantage of that space.
Shelves for books or miscellaneous items is a great idea.
Wall cabinets from a kitchen
work great for closed in storage.
5- Power: Most closets dont
have electric outlets in them,

you can easily add outlets by

running a power strip into the
closet.
6- Lighting: It is important to add proper lighting.
A desk light works. For better lighting get under cabinet lights and install them
above the desk area on the
bottom shelf or cabinet. Be
sure to mount the light as far
out from the wall as you can
to give maximum lighting on
your desk.
7- Air: If youre going to put
a computer or laptop on the
desk, remember they can overheat. Adding a small desk fan
to circulate the air can make all
the difference.
8- Finishing: Whether you
used wood or cabinets for
your storage, you can paint
it. By painting it a different
color than your closet walls
they will add a feel of depth to
your converted closet. Staining wood can also add a very
nice effect.

Mosquito Calls
Are Up

Mosquitos. Ugh. The irritating

creatures have plagued the peninsula for years and this season
theres a heightened concern because the Zika virus is primarily
transmitted by mosquitoes.
According to a report in AMNew York 311 has been flooded
with calls regarding mosquito control and the bulk of those calls have
come from Arverne. The calls are
no surprise to City Councilman
Donovan Richards who said, We
have the bay and the ocean, so
were right in between both. For
every day people who want to sit
in their backyard or just walk to
school or walk to work ... you are
eaten alive out there.
Last week , the Mayor said almost 500 cases of Zika have been
diagnosed in the City so far and has
called for the Federal government
to make emergency funding available to adequately fight the disease.
Richards continues to encourage residents to call 311 so the
City and the Health Department
If there is a project you would remain aware that mosquitos

The Rockaway Times

A few weeks ago in this

column I mentioned that I
learned that one of our four
cats, Nibbles (who was introduced to our home last
year by our oldest daughter, Amy, who promised at
the time that she was only
"babysitting" the feline for
two or three days until her
friend returned home from
a trip) was pregnant. Up until that time I thought the cat
was simply obese as she had
been devouring her food not
unlike participants in the
July 4th hot dog eating contest at Nathan's in Coney Island. Once I knew "Nibbles"
was a mother to be, I made
an appointment to have her
examined by the vet over
at the Animal Hospital of
the Rockaways on Saturday
morning, August 20 at 10:30
a.m. As far as Grace and the
girls were concerned, Dad
was just being a "good guy,"
taking the soon to be mommy cat to the doctor to make
sure everything was okay. In
fact, the only reason I wanted the cat examined at the
vet was to have an ultrasound done so I would know
well in advance of their
births just how many kittens
I would have to quickly arrange adoptions for!
The Friday before the vet's
appointment I sat both girls
down and laid down the law!
Once born, none of the kittens
were to be given names because I did not want anyone
becoming too attached to any

Cat Scratch Fever

of them. Additionally, they
were both to immediately
start discussing the possibility of adoption with all of their
friends, co-workers, neighbors and even strangers, because eight cats in the house
is simply too much and I did
not want to become known as
the "old geezer cat person" of
West 12th Road.
They
say
"timing
is
everything" and whoever
"they" are - they are right!
The following morning I was
up early to make sure I had
everything in place to transport Nibbles to the vet but
around 6 a.m. I heard a yowl
coming from the first floor
bathroom. Upon investigation I found Nibbles lying in
the shower delivering the first
of her litter. I quickly cleaned
up the shower area and
placed a clean set of towels
on the floor along with food
and water and set up a temporary litter box for the new
mom. Not knowing what to
do next I simply sat down on
the toilet seat and waited until about 8:45 a.m. when she
dropped a second kitten. At
9 a.m. I called the vets office
and explained that I would
have to cancel my pending
10:30 a.m. appointment as
nature had already taken its
course regarding Nibbles
pregnancy. In hindsight I
must have sounded like an
expectant father because
the staff laughingly assured
me everything would be fine
and urged me to calm down
and let "mommy do all the
work." Armed with that bit
of sage medical advice I sat
back down on the toilet and
supervised (okay, simply
watched) the birthing process until 11:15 a.m. when
yet another kitten made its
way into this world and the
4th, and thankfully final, kitten was born at noon.
Today, almost two weeks
later, the first floor bathroom
is still off limits and our zoo
population is now at eight
cats, one dog who thinks he
is human, two turtles (one of
whom thinks it is her mission

in life to separate my fingers

from my hand), one bearded
dragon with a back problem
and one elderly guinea pig
with cataracts. (Is "guinea"
pig an ethnic slur?) Lest I
forget, there are also three
white rats that have been
missing in action for over a
year now. God knows where
they are! In addition, we
have the cremated remains
of two dogs, two cats and
a rabbit sitting upstairs on
the fireplace. I keep telling
Grace when I move on all I
want is a simple cremation
and then pack me in with
our recently departed pit
bull!
By the way, if any of the
readers of this column out
there (or any members of
your lovely, caring, animal
friendly families) would care
to adopt any of our recent
flurry of kittens...or a dog...
or a couple of turtles...or a
lizard...or how about a long

Page 31

in the tooth guinea pig with

bad eyesight, let me know because they are going fast and
we do deliver! Keep in mind
that should the three white
rats ever surface, they are fair
game for relocation also.
Who do I think I am kidding? Truth be told, they are
not going fast, in fact they are
not going at all! The bad news
is that when I mention this to
anyone they simply stare incredulously at me as if I am
off my "meds" and then laugh
and walk away quickly! The
good news is that the staff at
the Animal Hospital of the
Rockaways tells me they may
name a treatment room after
me.
Gotta go, I have to conduct
a Google search on feline
chastity belts and I also know
it's gonna be happy hour
somewhere real soon!
Broad Channel, why would
anyone want to live anywhere
else?

Parks to the Rescue

Parks worker George Kinley with Brian Walters.

A Parks Department employee

went out of his way to help someone last week. On Friday, September 2, Brian Walters reached
out to Parks worker George Kinley
after his sons Kindle e-reader fell
through the cracks of the boardwalk steps by Caracas on Beach
106th Street. The device was inaccessible, so Walters stopped Kinley who was riding by on his quad
and asked if he could do anything
to help his distraught child. Ivy
Sirota Farrell, who witnessed the
incident, said, I did not expect
much. As the general opinion is
not a fond one of Parks personnel
due to personal experience and

witnessed improprieties. Gregory Kinley, was about to change

mine.
Farrell says that instead of
brushing the incident off, Kinley stayed and helped solve the
issue. Gregory took the time
to help resolve the dilemma of
my friend. He didnt have to. He
could have just said, Theres
nothing I can do and went on his
way. He chose to stay. He chose
to help. His kindness, patience
and resourcefulness resulted in
the Kindle being recovered. Happy son, grateful and very relieved
father, Farrell said. Way to go,
George!

Ferries, Questions And Answers

By Dan Guarino

Ahoy! The Rockaway Ferry is on

the horizon and getting closer.
According to the NYC Economic Development Corporation, Beginning in 2017, Citywide Ferry Service will provide a
new, affordable way to travel between waterfront communities
throughout New York City.
The City is investing $55 million in infrastructure upgrades,
and $30 million in operating support over the next six years. The
first phase launches in 2017 with
routes to Astoria, South Brooklyn,
and Rockaway. The Rockaway
ferry will run from Wall Street/
Pier 11 to Brooklyn Army Terminal to Beach 108th Street and
back every day.
But before it pulls into port
here, some people have questions. One of them is ferry advocate Laura Deckelman. Recently
she put those queries directly to
the EDC. Heres what she had to
ask and they had to say.
Do you have a schedule for the
preparation of the Beach 108th

Street Ferry landing, she asked,

in terms of cleanup, walkways,
etc. in preparation for the installation of the floating ferry dock
structure?
EDC answered, Ferry landing
work at the site is expected to
commence by winter 2016/2017.
EDC will coordinate with additional Department of Parks and
Recreation and Department of
Traffic projects in the area.
They also noted that construction of needed floating ferry
docks is under way at Staten Islands Mays Shipyard and expected to be installed as early as winter 2016/2017.
The vessels (themselves) are
being constructed by multiple
shipyards in the Gulf region to
ensure they are delivered on time
for the launch of each route. Construction is proceeding on schedule, EDC added. What about the
shuttle buses to and from the ferry? Has any consideration been
given to the requests to expand
the planned shuttle bus service
so as to include greater parts of
Rockaway than the original plan

calls for, Deckelman asked? And

would this include a second
shuttle bus on both the east and
west ends to better cover those
areas?
EDC said, We are working on
finalizing the routes based on
much of the feedback received
from elected officials and the
community. We hope to share the
finalized route information with
the community by late summer/
early fall 2016.
What about scheduling morning ferries earlier for the weekday
commute?
At this time, earlier ferry service is not contemplated. However, once service launches, we
will be monitoring ridership demands on the new ferry routes.
Deckelman also asked if the company contracted to run provide
citywide ferry service, Hornblower Cruises, is ready to meet with
the Rockaway community.
Hornblower and EDC will be
conducting outreach by borough
with the following stakeholders: elected officials, community
boards, and civic groups. Each

stakeholder group will be contacted and briefed in the aforementioned order.

As it is, EDC says they are planning launching Rockaway service
by summer 2017. Just to clarify, Deckelman asked EDC about
that. You said that the service
would commence "by summer
2017." We were/are counting on
ferry service in Rockaway starting (by) June 2017. So we hope
that by summer 2017 you don't
mean anytime between June 21
and September 21.
We understand that it is important to restore ferry service in
the Rockaways as quickly as possible. The Mayor has committed
to having three new ferry routesRockaway, South Brooklyn, and
Astoria-plus the existing East River
Ferry route, launched by summer
2017. We are on track to ensuring
the launch of all (three) new ferry
routes by summer 2017. As we get
closer to launch we will be sure to
provide details on the specific start
date for the Rockaway.
And that, so far, is the latest
news from all the ships at sea.

NOTICE OF PUBLIC SCOPING

THE OFFICE OF THE DEPUTY MAYOR FOR HOUSING AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
DRAFT SCOPE OF WORK FOR AN ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT STATEMENT (EIS)
DOWNTOWN FAR ROCKAWAY REDEVELOPMENT PROJECT
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN THAT a public scoping meeting will be held as
detailed below for the Downtown Far Rockaway Redevelopment Project. The
purpose of the scoping meeting is to provide the public with the opportunity to
comment on the Draft Scope of Work proposed to be used to develop an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the proposed Downtown Far Rockaway
Redevelopment Project.
A public scoping meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday, September 20,
2016 at 6:30 pm and will be held at St Johns Episcopal Hospital, Boces Conference Room, 510 Beach 20th Street, Far Rockaway, NY 11691. Interpretation
services can be accommodated upon request by calling or emailing the contact
below at least 1 week prior to the hearing.
Comments on the Draft Scope of Work are invited and may be presented at
the public scoping meeting and/or may be submitted in writing until 5:00 P.M. on
Monday, October 3, 2016 to the project contact below.
Directing that an Environmental Impact Statement be prepared, the Environmental Assessment Statement, Positive Declaration, and Draft Scope of Work
were issued by the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Housing and Economic Development on August 19, 2016, and are available for review from the contact person
listed below and on the websites of the Mayors Office of Sustainability and the
New York City Economic Development Corporation: www.nyc.gov/oec and www.
nycedc.com, respectively.
The City of New York, acting through the New York City Economic Development Corporation (EDC), is proposing a series of land use actions and other
discretionary actions (collectively the Proposed Actions) to implement recommendations of a comprehensive plan to redevelop and revitalize an approximately 25-block area of the Downtown Far Rockaway neighborhood of Queens, Community District 14. The affected area is generally bounded by Cornaga Avenue to
the south; Beach 22nd Street, Beach Channel Drive and Redfern Avenue to the
west and northwest; Gateway Boulevard to the southeast; and Central Avenue
and Hassock Street to the east and northeast.
Within this area, the Proposed Actions are anticipated to facilitate construction of new residential, commercial, community facility, and publically-accessible
open space. The reasonable worst case development scenario (RWCDS) for the
Proposed Actions is comprised of new floor area on the proposed Downtown
Far Rockaway Urban Renewal Area, two Disposition Sites, and 17 Projected Development Sites, which are all expected to be developed by the analysis year
of 2032. The development of these sites is expected to result in an incremental increase of approximately 3,027 dwelling units [total residential floor area of
3,048,459 gross square feet (gsf)]; 152,935 gsf of commercial (retail) space; up
to 86,947 gsf of community facility space; and new public plaza space on Mott
Avenue between Central Avenue and Redfern Avenue (the Proposed Project).
The RWCDS also identifies 9 potential development sites which are considered
possible but less likely to be developed by the analysis year of 2032.
The Proposed Project would require multiple City approvals. Some of these
approvals are discretionary actions requiring review under the New York State
Environmental Quality Review Act (SEQRA) and City Environmental Quality Review (CEQR). The Office of the Deputy Mayor for Housing and Economic Development will be the lead agency for CEQR. It is currently anticipated that the
Proposed Project would require the following approvals:
1) Zoning map amendments to change existing R5, R5/C1-2, R5/C2-2, C4-2,
C8-1 and M1-1 districts to R5, R5/C2-4, R6, R6/C2-4, C4-2 and C4-4 districts
within the Rezoning Area. All of the existing C1-2 and C2-2 commercial overlays within the Rezoning Area would be replaced or removed;
2) Zoning text amendments to the New York City Zoning Resolution (ZR) would:
a. Establish the Special Downtown Far Rockaway District within the Rezoning Area
to modify underlying zoning to require active ground floors where commercial
uses are allowed, adjust maximum permitted base and building heights to reflect
Downtown Far Rockaways existing built scale, and to adjust accessory off-street
parking requirements to reflect the areas higher auto ownership rates;
b. Establish the Special District as a Mandatory Inclusionary Housing Area
(MIHA) in Appendix F of the Zoning Resolution;

c. Establish a City Planning Commission Special Permit for Transient Hotels within the Special District in order to ensure area residential goals are achieved
and new transient hotels fit within the context of Downtown Far Rockaways
neighborhood character and would minimize vehicular traffic and congestion;
3) Disposition of two city-owned properties (Block 15534, Lot 70 and Block 15705,
Lots 59 and 69), which requires approval through the Citys Uniform Land Use
Review Procedure (ULURP) pursuant to New York City Charter Section 197 (c)
and approval pursuant to New York City Charter Section 384(b)(4);
4) Acquisition of real property to facilitate implementation of the Proposed Project.
The City of New York may acquire certain property through negotiated acquisition or through eminent domain. Any property acquired through eminent domain
would be done in compliance with the provisions of the New York State Eminent
Domain Procedure Law and the New York City Administrative Code; and
5) Establish the Downtown Far Rockaway Urban Renewal Area (DFRURA). The
City, acting through the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and
Development (HPD), proposes the establishment of an Urban Renewal Area
(URA) for Downtown Far Rockaway. Establishing the URA would provide the City
with authority to dispose of City-owned property within DFRURA for redevelopment in accordance with the Downtown Far Rockaway Urban Renewal Plan.
In addition, the Proposed Project requires the approval from the MTA Board of
Directors authorizing the surrender of the MTAs leasehold interest in Block
15705, Lot 69. The two Disposition Sites currently under DOT/MTA and
DSNY jurisdiction (Block 15705, Lots 59 and 69, and Block 15534, Lot 70,
respectively) would be disposed to a private developer for redevelopment
via a competitive Request for Proposal process by EDC and HPD.
Finally, a number of Projected and Potential Development Sites within the
Rezoning Area and a portion of the URA are built within mapped street widening lines. Future development on these sites assumes that property owners would
follow a series of administrative actions to comply with General City Law Section
(GCL) 35 provisions, whereby the owners would submit an application for a GCL
35 waiver at the New York City Board of Standards and Appeals (BSA). Following
this submission, the BSA would submit the application to DOT for review and
approval.
Written comments on the Draft Scope of Work will be accepted until 5:00
P.M. on Monday, October 3, 2016.
Copies of the Positive Declaration and Draft Scope of Work for the project
may be obtained by any member of the public from the lead agency contact listed below. These documents are also available on the websites of the Mayors

Life With Our

Artistic Child
By Kami-Leigh Agard

Yes, I consider my daughter, artistic, remodeling the

label, autistic.
Eight years ago, my beautiful daughter was born.
After much fanfare, with
me screaming like a banshee
in the back seat of the car, my
mum singing at the top of her
lungs, we arrived at South
Nassau Community hospital.
God certainly knows what
one can bear, because only
after a record-breaking onehour labor, my little girl
popped out like a fighter,
red-faced, fists swinging,
hollering like Muhammed Ali
when he knocked out George
Foreman.
As I had a difficult pregnancy and was on on bed rest, I
only got six-weeks maternity
leave, and had to report back
to work in the stressful fashion industry. My daughter
stayed at home with her dad.
I would come from work,
spinning like a top. Rushing
to make her food, cook dinner for us, clean-up and retire for the night, exhausted.
Weekends were the same.
Cleaning, running errands
and trying to squeeze in a bit
of family time.
The question that really
eluded me was, Am I giving
my daughter enough of my
attention? I just did not feel
as though there were enough
hours in the day.
She met all her initial
milestones. She sat up at
three months, crawled at
six months and was walking
like a ballerina on her toes
at 12 months. Thank God, I
thought.
However at 18 months, my
mother-in-law revealed to us
that she suspected that our
daughter had some autistic

characteristics. I remember
feeling livid. Like, how dare
you put that label on my
daughter? To be honest, I had
no idea what she was talking
about. Autism? What is that?
Anyway, to prove her
wrong, I contacted the NYS
Health Departments Early Intervention Program to
have my daughter screened. I
painfully remember when the
bevy of psychologists came to
our home to test her, she did
not respond as was expected. After each evaluation, I
cried. I thought they were all
so rough with her. So what if
she is not making eye contact?
So what if she is not stacking
the blocks, instead choosing
to throw them over her shoulder? So what if she walks on
her toes? After several evaluations, she was diagnosed with
Pervasive Development Disorder, not otherwise specified
(PDD-NOS).
I felt the gamut of emotions:
bewilderment, hurt, anger,
resentment, sorrow, indignation. Blaming myself, her dad,
his family, my family, the doctors, my boss, everyone, even
God! Then disbelief. These
people are wrong. My daughter is strong and healthy. At
eighteen months, she was already built like a brick house.
Picture Simone Biles powerful legs, arms and core. When
we took my daughter to the
doctor, it would take me, two
nurses and the doctor to hold
her down for examination.
And trust me, she fought us all
like Muhammed Ali himself!
Fast-forward to the present,
she is in a NYC Board of Education District 75 school for
children with special-needs.
She receives speech, occupational and physical therapies.

She is non-verbal, (as of now),

walks on her toes and does
some peculiar self-stimulating actions. However, I see
tremendous improvements.
I want this column to first
and foremost, be a platform
for Rockaway families and
friends of children with artism to share our frustrations, joys and heartaches of
parenting our special children. Secondly, to explore
what services are available
locally to boost our children
to be the best they can be.
Thirdly, to explore many issues that elude us as caregiv-

Page 37
ers: medication, vaccines,
diet, potty training, behavior
management, financial planning for their future, and of
course, keeping our sanity.
Also, I would like to give
the general public an opportunity to learn about autism.
For example, no, autism is
not contagious. Yes, my child
is throwing a tantrum in the
supermarket, not because of
bad parenting, but because
thats her way of communicating.
Please join me in this journey as I share funny anecdotes, frustrations and all the
fruitful possibilities for our
artistic children. As most
parents of artistic children
would share, they are indeed
exhausting, but such a joy.
This is why when asked, I tell
people that my daughter is
Artistic, as opposed to autistic. She is beautiful, gifted
and a savant in her own right.
Our challenge as caregivers
is to find the hook that will
engage them to have happy,
productive and fulfilling lives.
Please tune in

The Pipeline:
Surfing Hermine Or Trying:
MAYOR IS A KOOK
By Katie McFadden

Surfs up, but off limits! With

Hurricane Hermine churning
off the coast, the waves over
the past week were what every
surfer waits for all year. Yet in
anticipation of the storm that
never made landfall, Mayor Bill de Blasio put a leash
on surfers when he made the
premature decision to close
the beaches to everyone, from
Sunday to at least Wednesday
of this past week.
Some surfers ignored the
requests of Parks Department
employees and police, taking
advantage of the storm surf
regardless. Some were hit with
fines and others simply avoided Rockaway altogether and
went to Long Island beaches.
Overall, most felt the nanny
state restrictions were ridiculous and they hope that it
doesnt set a precedent for future storms.
These are the primo conditions that we live for, Elliot
Chaffer said. As surfers, we
wait for months for waves like
the ones from Hermine, Ryan
Norton said. We surf these
waves, and bigger, all winter
long and no one bats an eye.
We surf at our own risk, so its
weird when all of a sudden
were told we cant surf, just
because its in season, a surfer who chose to remain anonymous said.
Some admitted that the
waves were not for the inexperienced. The regulars didnt
let the restrictions stop them.
I go to the beach when there
are waves. I listen to Surfline,
not de Blasio, Andrew Hughes
said. Some noted that the
rules being enforced were at
the discretion of the enforcers,
with police being more lenient
and Parks Enforcement being
stricter. Some took the warnings and went in regardless. I
couldnt believe I was stopped

by the NYPD and told not to go

in. I looked at them like they
had three heads and proceeded to go in the water. It was
just too damn good out there,
Norton said, adding that he
was never fined, but knows
others that were. According
to the New York Post, several
surfers received summonses
of $80 for failing to comply.
Others heard that fines would
be $250, but were actually $25.
Others said the threat of fines
actually made surf sessions
more dangerous. "Every time
a cop came toward me, I'd run
back in the water. It made for
a longer session than I thought
I could handle. At one point I
got so tired it felt dangerous to
not come in, but I didn't know
if the tickets were $5 or $500,"
Brian Wengrofsky said. But for
some, this weeks waves were
priceless. I would have paid
$250 for those waves without
hesitation, J Scott Klossner
said.
Not wanting to be babysat,
some surfers chose to avoid
Rockaway altogether, which
was noticeable by less crowded concessions and local businesses. A surfer who chose to
remain anonymous said making the call to close the beach-

es a few days in advance, was

the wrong one, as it kept peo-

ple from coming to the neighborhood, despite the beautiful

weather. She chose to leave
town for the weekend. We
went and surfed and spent our
money in Long Beach instead
of being treated like criminals in our own front yard,
she said. This should have
been a big weekend for local
businesses, a moment where
Rockaway shined, and instead,
it was an embarrassment with
the city declaring no surfing on
a weekend when you want to
go surfing most. This was the
equivalent of two feet of fresh
powder in Vermont and being
told, no skiing. She added that
she hopes closing the beaches
to surfers doesnt become the
norm.

Oysters On
Way To Bay
Mayor Bill de Blasio and the
Department of Environmental
Protection (DEP), in partnership with the Billion Oyster
Project, announced that a project is underway that will see
the installation of 50,000 oysters in Jamaica Bay the largest single installation of breeding oysters in New York City.
The New York/New Jersey
Harbor was once blanketed by
oysters, but due to over harvesting, dredging and pollution, they became functionally
extinct decades ago. Oysters
are widely recognized as a key
component of a healthy marine ecosystem as they filter
pollutants from the water, help
to protect wetlands and shoreline from erosion and storm
surge, and provide habitat for
communities of fish and other
aquatic organisms. Once the
oyster installation is complete,
water quality in the vicinity of

anticipated improvements in

The Billion Oyster Project
and students from the Urban

School will assist with the installation and monitoring of
the oyster beds.
Dan Mundy of the Jamaica
Bay Ecowatchers said, "The
restoration of oysters back into
the waters of Jamaica Bay is
one of the key remaining goals
to fully restore this great and
unique ecosystem. This vital
species naturally filters the waters of the Bay while providing
unique habitat for fish. DEP is
to be commended for taking
the leading role on this critical
effort. This project will see the
first major initiative to bring
back this keystone species to
Jamaica Bay where they once
flourished!

From NYC Council Member

Eric Ulrich's office: Plans are
underway for a street co-naming ceremony in honor of Justin Zemser.
As you probably remember,
Justin was one of those special
Rockaway kids who always
gave back to his community,
acting as a shining example
of what "good kids" are like.
Justin's accomplishments led
to a commission at the United States Naval Academy. He
was in his second year at the
Academy when he tragically

lost his life in an accident.

The ceremony is tentatively
scheduled for late morning on
Friday, October 14, 2016, at
the corner of Seaside Avenue
and Beach Channel Drive, in
front of the Beach Channel
High School Campus. The
timing of the ceremony was
set to allow for participation
by the students at Channel
View High School, Justin's
alma mater.
More details to follow as we
get closer to the date of the
ceremony.

Back in the day, Rockaways

Irishtown was growing by leaps
and bounds! There were numerous watering holes throughout the
famous Seaside/Irishtown section
of the Rockaway Peninsula. The
original bounds of Old Irishtown
were Beach 101st street on the east
and Beach 108th street on the west.
Those of us who remember, know

that these boundaries stretched like

a rubber band, Aye!
Today we see this old photograph of Cooneys Inn, located on
Rockaway Beach Boulevard and
Beach 104th Street.
Marked as taken in 1915, this
photo looks as if the gang is outside and singing, Hail Hailthe
gangs all here! The sign states that
Schaefers Lager Beer is on tap and it
was brewed in Brooklyn. The Boulevard is at the left side of the photo.

Woerners World
Q & A WITH ROCKAWAY RAY
In the June of 2015, Poly
Prep football standout and
Rockaway native Ray Marten
committed to Boston College on a full athletic scholarship. Woerners World got the
chance to catch up with Ray in
advance of his first collegiate
game, played this past Saturday against Georgia Tech at
Dublin, Irelands Aviva Stadium.
Woerners
World:
First
things first. How was your
summer?
Ray Marten: I got to campus
in late June and enrolled in two
summer classes. My schedule
pretty much through July was
just working out and focusing on the academics. It was a
lot to take in classroom-wise
because I was taking two 15week courses that were being
condensed into 5 weeks. It was
definitely a good opportunity
for me to get adjusted to the
school prior to training camp.

WW: How was camp?

RM: Camp started at the
beginning of August. Every
day we got a little bit better
and grew as a group. It was
definitely tough because the
schedule was so demanding. I
am playing tight end (his high
school position). The word
I would use to describe it is
grind. Every day you have
tasks that you have to approach one at a time and just
grind through.
WW: I know you have only
been in the BC environment
for just over two months
now, but what difference are
you seeing between the high
school and college game at
this point?
RM: College follows a military-type schedule it is a
full schedule every day. I have
somewhere to be at basically
all times. Classes, meetings,
learning the playbook, practice, lifting, and most impor-

tantly, study hall, fill up the

entire day. The college game is
so specific its all about technique and getting everything
right on every play. In high
school, you can get by just using size and strength college
is not the same. There are also
so many more plays and audibles we need to be aware of.
WW: Many college athletes
access their choice of school
on this basis of it being a fit;
do you feel that BC has been a
good fit so far?
RM: Boston College has
been a perfect fit. I am not sure
there is a more genuine coaching and support staff in the
country. They truly care about
the players as individuals. The
football program recruits high
character guys who I am able
to relate to because they come
from similar backgrounds,
which makes me feel even
more comfortable.
WW: Every BCS football
team goes into Week 1 wanting to win a National Championship. Realistically, what
is the outlook for this years
Eagles?
RM: Late last season, the
team kind of fell into a ditch,
so our first priority is to dig
ourselves out of that and
start fresh. We need to look at
everything as taking it gameby-game, snap-by-snap. Georgia Tech is all we are focused
on right now, and when this
game is over, we will move
on to the next opponent.. Our
goal by the end of the season
is to get to a bowl game.

WW: What events led to your

success in ultimately becoming a Division 1 athlete?
RM: It all started with Hurricanes football. Steve Orr and
my coaches in that program
did a great job teaching the
game. The idea of being able
to play for the Hurricanes
with all of my friends got me
to love football. That continued at Poly where they gave
me so many great opportunities. All of the coaches there
did so much for me as well and
had me on a college schedule
at a young age.
WW: Athletes who venture
off the Peninsula to cultivate
their pursuits sometimes lose
a connection with Rockaway
as time goes on. Do you feel
that is hard to maintain this
connection with home?
RM: Absolutely not. There
are fourteen people from
Rockaway here in Ireland to
support me at my first game
and countless others who have
reached out through text and
social media to wish me luck. I
am a part of a new, special circle here at BC but it is amazing
to be able to stay in close touch
with my family and everyone
back home.
Boston College fell to Georgia Tech in their season opener across the pond 17-14. They
will be featured in nationally
televised games on September
17th (ESPNU 3:30 p.m.), October 7th (ESPN 7:30 p.m.),
and November 11th (ESPN2
7:30 p.m.).

Pretty Epic Stuff!

Its certainly been a long time
since I can remember two separate hurricane events in the space
of one week.
Last week we started off with
Hurricane Gaston waves and
ended the week with Hurricane Hermine bringing on an
onslaught of intense energy
kicking up waves well past the
double-overhead
category.

Interesting, too, was how much

more intense it was in Rockaway
compared to Long Beach, where
they face more south. At any
rate, surfers all over Long Island
got what they needed, despite
the knee-jerk stupidity of our
Mayor calling for the beaches to
be closed to try to prevent surfing. While things are seriously
worse all over the world, its a
very sad situation when you feel
like youre living in police state
and making a free form life style
of surfing a crime.

party, featuring the award

Hell or High Water, plus face
painting and bouncy rides
for kids, will take place at
the Breezy Point Ball Field.
The race is open to anyone,
but non-shareholders are
encouraged to get a parking
pass from a shareholder in
advance to park in the private community. There will
also be a shuttle service at
8:45 a.m. and 9 a.m. from
the ball field and the stores
in Breezy to the race start
in Roxbury. Non-runners
are also welcome to line up
along the main road to cheer
on those who are running.
Although its been 15 years,
the timing felt right for a new
tradition. We wanted to do
something for the 15th anniversary because it will be
more meaningful to people
in the community. We had a
big turnout for a Mass for the
10th anniversary, but as time

goes on, the turnout starts

to dwindle each year. We
thought the 15th anniversary
would be a good opportunity
to bring back peoples attention to it and I thought more
and more and realized that
the new generation of kids in
Breezy werent around when
this happened. With so many
people from Breezy, Roxbury
and Rockaway affected by
9/11, I felt it was imperative
that kids not only learn about
this in school, but that they
understand the personal impact it had on our community, Flanigan said.
Flanigan was one of many
on the original 9/11 Memorial Committee, which
came together to raise funds
to build the memorials in
Roxbury and Breezy Point.
Through Family Fun Days,
money continued to be raised
for the upkeep of these beautiful tributes. After we built
up some funding for the upkeep, we stepped back a little
bit because we didnt want to
keep asking people for donations. Life went on and Sandy

hit and that money diminished over time, but these

memorials are always going
to be there and theyre always
going to require repairs to
keep them looking beautiful,
he said. Saturdays run will
not only raise awareness of
9/11, but will also serve as a
fundraiser for Breezys 9/11
Memorial Fund, reserved for
the maintenance of the Roxbury and Breezy Point memorials. Seventy-five percent of the proceeds will go
towards the 9/11 Memorial
Fund, while 25 percent will
go toward another important
cause, ALS ONE. John Kelly,
another one of the founding
members of the 9/11 Memorial Committee, was diagnosed with ALS about a year
ago. I felt it was fitting to
give back to him for what he
did for the organization and
help him by supporting an
organization thats working
to find a cure for ALS, Flanigan said.
Flanigan is hoping for 300
to 400 people to participate
in this years race and hopes

it will continue to grow

each year so different organizations can benefit. In
the years to come, wed love
to give that 25 percent to
something like the Wounded Warriors or local volunteer fire departments or put
it toward school scholarships. If this turns out to be
something huge, we could
help two to three organizations each year, Flanigan
said. However he says the
race is not about the money. The real drive here is
to educate younger generations from the community
about the impacts of 9/11
on the community and the
people that were lost from
our community. We always
hear the slogan, gone, but
never forgotten. After 15
years, I want to make sure
those words stick and that
these people arent forgotten and we continue to keep
their memory alive.
