Wow!!! What a great start to the year!!

Thank you so much in advance for
sending your ESL students to class on
time. We truly appreciated how
effortless and smooth last years
transitions to class occurred, and look
forward to another great year. This
year we have 76 ESL students and
counting within the building. 43 are
transitional students, which means they
achieved the qualifying score to exit the
program. This does not mean they
cannot be serviced if you feel as if there
is a concern. Please partner with us, if
ever there is a concern. We also have
03 Non-English Language Background
students, with 11second languages
spoken throughout the school including
African, Arab, Fulani, Hindi, Khmer,
Mandarin, Spanish, Vietnamese, and
Wolof.

THE LOREM IPSUMS

FALL 2016

Correct Terminology
In the beginning students identified as ESL
(English as a Second Language), most recently
ELL (English Language Learner), are now
identified as EL (English Learner). The actual
course is still referred to as ESL.

Should I send work with my EL?

No, you do not need to send any work with your EL
student during their regularly scheduled time. The ESL
teachers will plan lessons that are grade and language
appropriate. Many of our groups have students from
various classes. Therefore it would be impossible to work
solely on one assignment with one student. We will
include several skills in our lessons that reinforce
classroom activities as well as focus on their WIDA

What if I see an area of need?

If you feel that a child needs help with a particular skill,
please reach out to us for some suggestions and/or
strategies. We will also be more than happy to address
the concern in our weekly lesson plans.

Resources
Stop our ESL classroom. We have loads of resources
that can be use such as: Bilingual (Spanish/ English) or
picture dictionaries, games, books on CD, flash cards
and more. You are welcome to borrow and return
daily.

Testing Accommodations
Please keep in mind, the general rule of thumb all
students classified as EL regardless of service time
qualify for any and ALL EL testing accommodations.
This generally includes read-a-loud for math and
science. Extended time and a quieter environment is
always beneficial. Please take advantage if you feel as
if your students will benefit!!
