First Grade Virginia Standards of Learning 1. Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) Grade One History and Social Science Standards of Learning (SOL) for Virginia Public Schools Geography 1.4: The student will develop map skills by: a) Recognizing basic map symbols, including references to land, water, cities, and roads; b) Using cardinal directions on maps; c) Identifying the shapes of the United States and Virginia on maps and globes; d) Locating Washington, D.C., the capital of the United States, and Richmond, the capital of Virginia, on a United States map.
Integration of Global Education
Students will understand that people come from all over the world have come to live in Virginia. Students will become aware of the fact that people move to Virginia for different reasons. Students will recognize that people can live in Virginia, and yet maintain connections to their home country. Students will recognize similarities/differences between their home country and the U.S.A. Specific Lesson Plan Modifications for Global Competencies Students will locate the country their family comes from on a globe and world map. Students will listen to presentations from students family members about the country their family comes from. Students will participate in shared mapping activity to locate the countries that students families come from. Informal Outcome Assessments Students will be able to identify their home country on a world map and globe, along with the U.S.A. and Virginia. Students will be able to describe orally and in writing ways their home country is similar to the U.S.A., and ways it is different. 2. Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) Grace One History and Social Science Standards of Learning (SOL) for Virginia Public Schools Geography 1.10: The student will apply the traits of a good citizen by a) Focusing on fair play, exhibiting good sportsmanship, helping others, and treating others with respect; b) Recognizing the purpose of rules and practicing self-control; c) Working hard in school; d) Taking responsibility for ones own actions; e) Valuing honesty and truthfulness in oneself and others; f) Participating in classroom decision-making through voting.
Integration of Global Education
Students will understand that they are members not only of their school and local communities, but also the global community. Students will understand that citizens participate and make positive contributions in their school, local, and global communities. Specific Lesson Plan Modifications for Global Competencies Students will view photographs/videos showing activities they may see globally/in their local community/in their classroom in order to elicit conversations about honesty, obeying rules, taking turns, etc. Students will discuss what responsible citizens could do, and identify the appropriate trait. Students will listen to stories about children and cultures that highlight global opportunities. Students will view a video, Amanda Belzowski: 10-year-old Lemonade Stand Titan for a Cause Dear to Her Heart (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXjDW-JQ3Yc) and discuss the action Amanda took. Students will brainstorm ideas for ways to become involved either in their school, local community, and/or globally. Informal Outcome Assessments Students will be able to describe how they can be a responsible citizen of their classroom, their community, and the world. Students will model actions of responsible citizens. Students will write/illustrate why they should be global citizens.
