of Aggregates
EXPERIMENT NO.
NAME OF THE EXPERIMENT: STRIPPING TEST OF AGGREGATES ON
BITUMINOUS MIX
AIM OF THE EXPERIMENT:
aggregates
TEST DESCRIPTION:
This test covers the static immersion method for determining stripping
value of aggregates used in road construction. Here the stripping value is
measured by visual inspection. In this test, about 200g of aggregates
passing 20 mm sieve and retained on 12.5 mm sieve are taken and about 5
% by weight of the aggregate bitumen is taken. The bitumen and aggregate
is preheated separately. Then they are mixed thoroughly and the mixture is
transferred to a beaker and allowed to cool to room temperature for 2
hours. It is then kept in water bath at a temperature of 40 0C for 24 hours.
Afterwards, the beaker is taken out and allowed to cool at room
temperature. The extent of the stripping is estimated by visual examination
when the mixture is immersed in water.

Materials:
Take 200 g of aggregate passing through 20 mm sieve & retained on 12.5 mm sieve &
heat it up to 150C.
Take 5% of weight (10 g) of bitumen & heat it up to 160C.
Mix aggregate & bitumen thoroughly to coat aggregate surfaces completely with
bitumen.
Transfer mixture to beaker of capacity 500 ml & allow it to cool for 2 hrs. at room
temperature.
Fill beaker with distilled water to immerse aggregate- bitumen mix.
Cover the beaker & keep in water bath at temperature of 40C for 24 hrs. Take care that
PRECAUTIONS:
Use hand gloves while removing containers from oven after switching
off the oven.
Use safety shoes & aprons at the time of test.
Thoroughly clean & dry the container before testing.
