PRESS RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE September 9, 2016 Each year on September 17, Constitution

Day is celebrated to commemorate the signing of the United States Constitution in 1787.

In 2004,

Congress mandated that all federally funded educational institutions provide educational programming

on the history of the Constitution on that day.

On an annual basis, the Judiciary of Guam participates in celebrating Constitution Day by

engaging in educational outreach, sending its judicial officers, attorneys, and other members of the

Guam Bar Association into our community to teach a lesson on the Constitution to hundreds of students

in the island’s middle and high schools.

This year, the Judiciary is expanding its Constitution Day outreach by making it a weeklong

event.

All three branches of government will declare September 12 17, 2016 as Constitution Week

and September 17, 2016 as Constitution Day.

A Legislative Resolution signing will take place on

Monday, September 12 at 3:00 p.m. in the Justice Monessa G. Lujan Appellate Courtroom.

A

Governor’s Proclamation will take place on Tuesday, September 13 at 10:00 a.m. in the Governor’s

Conference Room. Throughout the week, students in the island’s schools will be engaged in a lesson on

the Bill of Rights. They will have an opportunity to reflect on the U.S. Constitution and the importance

of efforts that each of us, as citizens, make in preserving the ideals embodied in it.

In support of its

efforts to increase public understanding of the rule of law, the Judiciary of Guam is a regular provider of

law-related education to the island’s youth.
