QUESTION 1 [16 MARKS]


The cylindrical plate weighs 18.4 kN and is suspended by three cables AD, BD and
CD from point D as shown in Figure 1. The tension forces in the three cables are
given as FA, FB and FC.
a) Draw the free body diagram.

The compound beam AC in Figure 2 is made out of two pieces AB and CB and
connected by a pin at point B. The compound beam is fixed at the wall at point A
while it is supported by a rocker at point C.

point A and B. The coefficient of friction between the disk and the inclined surface
are s = 0.6 and k = 0.5.
